Would you like a cool in-game skin for free? Watch out! It might be a scam(诈骗).

Chinese police have uncovered many scams which target teenagers. June data showed that in shanghai, 15% of seam victims (受害者) were under 25, and the youngest was only 7.

Such scams usually rely on secrecy and fear. One typical scam offers free game skins. A group in Beijing’s Tongzhou District tricked teens into downloading programs. The software helped scammers secretly control their devices and steal money without password. Some scams are more difficult to recognize. A student once received a video call from a man in a police-like uniform with a fake (假的) case-filing notice. Frightened, the student transferred 183,000 yuan from his father’s bank account. There are also fake part-time job scams requiring teens to pay money in advance.

Wang Qi from Tongzhou police said these scams have three steps: posting fake ads online, sending links or QR codes to cheat teens into downloading risky apps, and pressuring them to keep secrets from parents before stealing money.

Here are tips to help stay safe from online scams.

For kids:

•Don’t click on unfamiliar links or scan unknown QR codes.

•Never share your screen or personal information with strangers.

•If someone asks you for money, tell your parents or teachers as soon as possible. Don’t try to deal with it alone or keep it a secret.

For parents:

•Keep payment passwords private and do not share them with your children.

•Know which games and social media platforms your children use. Check their spending often.

•Download the National Anti-Fraud Center app.
