When 14-year-old Tom joined the school speech club last September, his hands shook so hard he could hardly hold his notes. “I’ll never speak in front of people,” he told his mom that night, eyes filled with tears. Public speaking had always scared him—even answering questions in class made his face burn.

His club advisor, Ms. Lee, noticed his fear. “Let’s start small,” she said. She asked Tom to practice with just her first, then with three club members. Each time, she gave him specific advice: “Slow down when you talk about your hobby” or “Smile when you mention your dog.” Tom practiced every evening, recording himself and adjusting his tone.

Two months later, the club held a mini-speech contest. Tom almost backed out, but Ms. Lee handed him a note: “You’ve prepared more than anyone. Trust yourself.” When it was his turn, Tom took a deep breath and started talking about his love. At first, his voice shook, but as he described finding his first constellation (星座), he forgot to be nervous. He even answered a listener’s question clearly.

When he finished, the room cheered in applause (掌声). “I did it!” Tom said to himself. Later, Ms. Lee said, “Growth isn’t about being brave overnight—it’s about taking one small step after another.” Tom kept that in mind.
