第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
You’re never too old for a little fun. From 180-year-old gardens to a coaster that turns you upside down fourteen times, these four theme parks will bring out the kid in anyone.
Ocean Park (Hong Kong, China)
Half theme park, half animal park, Ocean Park sits on a hill beside the sea on the southern side of the island. A cable car carries visitors over the hill between the two halves, with the sea on one side and the rides on the other. Giant pandas live in the lower section, and the Halloween events here are among the most popular in Asia.
Tip: take the cable car in the morning, when the queue is short and the view is clearest.
Tivoli Gardens (Copenhagen, Denmark)
Opened in 1843, Tivoli is one of the oldest amusement parks still running in the world. Its wooden coaster, Rutschebanen, dates back to 1914, and a staff member still controls its speed by hand. The park is lit by thousands of lamps after dark, and fireworks fill the sky on Saturday nights.
Tip: a multi-ride wristband costs less than buying tickets one by one, but only if you plan to ride more than six times.
Alton Towers (Staffordshire, UK)
Built around a ruined castle, this park is famous for pushing coasters to the limit. The Smiler holds the world record for inversions (翻转)—fourteen in a single ride—while Wicker Man sends you through a burning wooden figure. Be prepared to walk: the rides are spread across a deep valley, and the paths between them are steep.
Tip: check the app for live queue times and head for the busiest ride first.
PortAventura World (Salou, Spain)
This resort is divided into six themed areas, from the Mediterranean to imperial China. Shambhala was once the tallest and fastest coaster in Europe, and Dragon Khan throws riders through eight inversions without a break. For a quieter hour, the shows in the Chinese area are worth the stop.
Tip: guests staying at a hotel inside the resort are allowed into the park an hour before everyone else.
21. In which park can visitors see giant pandas?
A. Tivoli Gardens. B. Alton Towers. C. Ocean Park. D. PortAventura World.
22. What can be learned about Rutschebanen at Tivoli Gardens?
A. It only operates on Saturday nights.
B. Its speed is still controlled by a worker.
C. It runs faster than modern steel coasters.
D. It was built in the same year as the park.
23. What do Alton Towers and PortAventura World share?
A. A cable car over the sea. B. A park opened in the 1840s.
C. A wooden coaster from 1914. D. Impressive roller coasters.

Peter Higgs, the physicist who proposed the particle (粒子) that gives matter its mass (质量), died peacefully at his home in Edinburgh on 8 April 2024. He was 94.
Acknowledged as one of the most influential theorists of his time, Higgs changed the way physicists picture the inside of an atom. The university where he taught for decades called his work the foundation on which a whole generation of research has been built. In 2013 he shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with François Englert—forty-nine years after the paper that made his name.
Higgs is best known for the idea now called the Higgs field (希格斯场): a field filling the universe, which slows particles down and, in doing so, gives them mass. When his first paper was sent to a journal in 1964, it was rejected within days, the editor seeing “no obvious point for physics”. A revised version was published later that year, but for a long time, few physicists paid it much attention; the general view then was that mass needed no explanation of this kind. But there were no errors in his mathematics, and the idea was proven correct in 2012, when two experiments at CERN, the European laboratory for particle physics, detected a particle of about 125 GeV—exactly as he had predicted.
That experience likely shaped the way he spoke to young researchers. He published very little compared with his colleagues, preferring to think alone for years rather than join a large team, and he told students that a good idea may wait half a lifetime for its test—and that they should be ready to wait.
Higgs was shy, modest and famously uninterested in fame. He was said to have never owned a mobile phone and wrote his papers by hand. When the discovery was announced in 2012, he wiped away a tear and admitted that he had never expected it to happen in his lifetime.
24. What can we learn from the second paragraph?
A. Higgs deserved credit for his great contributions.
B. Particles have less effect on matter than expected.
C. The Nobel Prize was awarded in memory of Higgs.
D. The Nobel Prize was given for work done at CERN.
25. Why did people view Higgs’s idea skeptically at first?
A. Some mistakes were found in his mathematics.
B. It went against the popular opinion at that time.
C. Mass was believed to need a special explanation.
D. The particle was detected by CERN soon afterwards.
26. What advice did Higgs often give to young researchers?
A. Rely on senior colleagues for guidance.
B. Join large teams to share the workload.
C. Be patient and ready to wait for proof.
D. Publish as often as possible to gain recognition.
27. Which can be used to describe Higgs according to the text?
A. Shy and generous. B. Modest and outgoing. C. Intelligent yet stubborn. D. Distinguished yet modest.

Before 2024, there was barely a whisper about it. Now the concept of “food noise” seems to be everywhere on social media; a quick TikTok search, for instance, finds that videos related to “food noise” attracted millions of views as of this summer. Aiming at naming the experience of thinking about food, longing for food, planning our next meal and so on, “food noise” describes some of the most basic human drives: hunger, appetite, longing. But now these are being seen as problems, rather than features. We should resist this definition.
To call something noise is to go beyond describing it: It’s to prove the claim that simply loving food, letting food occupy our thoughts and responding to our hunger are problematic. However, some people don’t accept it.
The pleasure we take from food is an important human good. Food connects us to ourselves, and with each other, and there is real harm in teaching people to view the pleasure they take as a problem. Famed English food writer Nigella Lawson earlier this year wrote in a post that she “couldn’t stomach the silence of life without food noise.” One commenter responded in agreement: “I believe it is called ‘food music.’”
Some people who identify with the term “food noise” experience genuinely intense food thoughts, as well as engage in harmful behaviors such as bingeing (大吃大喝). But according to experts, these problems are often rooted in restriction. In other words, food noise is what may happen when you’re not eating enough to satisfy your appetite, often under the pressures of diet culture.
And for any of us, the joy and pleasure and comfort of food should not be discounted. We need to eat to live, of course, but it goes beyond that; to live to eat has long given many of us meaning and community as well as sustenance (营养). Food noise should not be treated as a problem. Rather, we might call it “food music,” and dance to it.
28. What does the author think of the term “food noise”?
A. It fails to reflect how social media works.
B. It accurately names a natural human drive.
C. It wrongly presents normal feelings as problems.
D. It underestimates the power of hunger and appetite.
29. Why does the author mention Nigella Lawson and her commenter?
A. To warn readers against diet culture online.
B. To show some people value the joy of food.
C. To explain why food connects people online.
D. To prove famous writers make better comments.
30. According to experts, what may be the root cause of “food noise”?
A. Bingeing on delicious food.
B. The rise of social media platforms.
C. A lack of knowledge about nutrition.
D. Eating too little, often under diet pressure.
31. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text?
A. To defend the pleasure of eating.
B. To promote a healthier diet culture.
C. To introduce a new term about eating.
D. To criticize social media trend about food.
D
Have you ever wondered how birds know when to migrate (迁徙) or how they find their way over thousands of miles? For centuries, this has remained one of nature’s greatest mysteries. Today, thanks to a technology called “telemetry (遥测技术)”, scientists are beginning to unlock the hidden secrets of bird migration.
Telemetry involves attaching small electronic tags to birds. These tags send signals to satellites or ground stations, allowing researchers to record and track the birds’ exact movements day and night. In the past, these tags were heavy and could only be used on large birds like eagles. However, with the development of technology, engineers have created “micro-tags” that weigh less than a gram. This means even small songbirds and butterflies can now be tracked without great influence on their natural behaviour.
The data collected is surprising. For example, scientists found that the Bar-tailed Godwit, a medium-sized bird, flies from Alaska to New Zealand—a distance of 11,000 kilometers—without stopping once! This journey takes about eight days. During this time, the bird does not eat, drink, or sleep. To prepare for this, the bird eats heavily before the trip, doubling its body weight.
Understanding migration is not just about satisfying curiosity. It is important for protection. By knowing exactly where birds stop to rest and feed along their routes, governments can protect these specific areas. If a key resting spot is destroyed by development, the birds might not survive their long journey.
Climate change is also affecting migration. Warmer springs mean insects hatch (孵化) earlier. If birds arrive at their destination too late, they might miss the peak food season for their babies. Telemetry helps scientists monitor these changes and predict how bird populations might be affected in the future.
32. Which can replace the underlined word “attaching” in Paragraph 2?
A. Replacing. B. Limiting. C. Sticking. D. Comparing.
33. What can we infer about the Bar-tailed Godwit from Paragraph 3?
A. It can stay awake for over a week during migration.
B. It loses much weight soon after arriving in New Zealand.
C. It looks for food nonstop on its long migratory journey.
D. It prefers to take breaks over the ocean rather than on land.
34. How might climate change affect migratory birds?
A. Their journey becomes shorter than before.
B. Their babies hatch earlier than the insects.
C. Their bodies are too heavy to fly long distances.
D. Their food supply may not match their arrival time.
35. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Mysteries of the Seasonal Weather
B. Technology Sheds Light on Bird Migration
C. Endangered Songbirds Need More Protection
D. Climate Change: A Warning for All Species

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Mastering Body Language: The Key to Effective Communication
We often focus on what we say when communicating with others, yet we tend to overlook the power of body language. 36
Facial expressions are the most direct form of body language. 37 Even a slight change in expression is noticed by the people around us. A warm smile can close the distance between people, while a frown may signal doubt or disagreement.
38 Gentle, steady eye contact shows sincerity and attention, and looking into someone’s eyes while listening makes them feel respected. Avoiding the other person’s gaze, by contrast, may suggest a lack of interest. Staring too aggressively, however, causes discomfort, so the right balance depends on the social situation.
Posture and gestures matter just as much. Standing straight and sitting upright show confidence and positivity, whereas crossing your arms often suggests defensiveness or coldness. 39 Open hand gestures and a relaxed body position help create a friendly atmosphere.
Finally, mastering body language takes long-term practice. 40 Because these habits are rooted in daily behaviour, we should observe and correct our improper movements day by day. Gradually, natural and appropriate body language will become second nature, and our overall communication skills will improve greatly.
A. It is not something that can be changed overnight.
B. Even the way you hold your hands sends a message.
C. They reveal our inner feelings and attitudes almost instantly.
D. Body language is far more important than the words we choose.
E. Eye contact is another important part of nonverbal communication.
F. Standing too close to others can make them feel uncomfortable.
G. Here are several aspects of body language worth paying attention to in daily life.

Recently I lost my job. I needed to find a new one. I picked up a newspaper and read the job ads. I wondered what jobs I could do. I marked the possible jobs in the paper.
I crossed out most ads. Finally, I saw one: Waitress Wanted (招聘女服务员). I sat back and smiled, wondering whether I’d have a uniform.
I dressed quickly and arrived at the restaurant. The owner asked a few short questions about my experience, then she told me I could start work in a few days. On my first day, the owner took me to a back room. She said lunchtime wouldn’t be very busy, so I could get used to the work easily. I kept myself busy. I watched other waitresses to learn how to set the tables.
Suddenly, I saw a group of men walking toward me. I felt nervous. There were ten. I watched them take their seats. Then I calmed myself down. “I can do this,” I said to myself. I picked up menus and walked to the table. My hands were shaking.
“Hi, everybody. My name is Flo. I’m new, and I’d be really thankful if you’d order the fish special.” All the men smiled, and I felt relaxed.
A man ordered several drinks before the food was ready. I noticed other waitresses carry at least three plates on one arm. It looked easy. When the food was ready, I confidently put three plates on one arm and walked out of the kitchen.
While I was putting the plates on the table, one plate lost its balance and some wet food fell directly onto one man’s arm. I quickly picked up napkins (纸巾) from the table and started to clean his sleeve (袖子).

A Discussion on Online Shopping
With the development of technology, online shopping is accepted by more and more consumers. However, problems caused by it have drawn people’s great attention.
Last Friday, our class had a heated discussion about online shopping. Some students support it. They think it is convenient because people can buy different kinds of cheaper goods without leaving home.
Others, however, are against it. They are afraid that the quality of goods cannot be guaranteed. People may be cheated and there are risks when paying online.
As far as I’m concerned, we should be careful while enjoying the convenience of shopping online. In addition, we’d better choose reliable shops before placing orders.

I shook a little and said sorry again and again. Burning with shame, I feared the customer would complain to the restaurant owner. Much to my relief, he smiled gently and told me not to blame myself. He remarked that mistakes were unavoidable for a beginner. The other men nodded, adding that it was merely a small incident. Their comforting words eased my tension. A wave of gratitude rose in my heart. Taking a deep breath, I delivered the remaining dishes with greater caution.
I would never forget the customer’s kindness. Before leaving, the man encouraged me to have faith in myself. After they left, the owner praised me for being polite when the trouble happened. This unforgettable experience greatly boosted my confidence. Afterwards, I kept practising my serving skills in my spare time. Whenever I ran into trouble at work, I would recall this precious memory. It reminded me to stay calm and treat every guest with sincerity.

M: They use AI. They send the photos to experts, and the experts tell us what to do.
W: So we don’t have to walk around the farm all day?
M: Right. Last year, the drones found a disease in the apples early, and we stopped it before it spread.
W: Do they replace us?
M: No, they help us. We still pick the apples. The drones just find problems for us.
W: I hope our village gets them too. Farming would be much easier.

M: The Red Valley is a young band from Manchester, very popular with students. Shall I play one of their songs for you?

W: Who’s playing? Can you see the full programme?
M: There’s a link here for the details. Let me click on it. Wait—Emma Ross is giving a concert at the Grand Theatre, but tickets are two hundred dollars each.
W: That’s more than I planned to spend. If you don’t want to, we can pick something else.
M: It is a bit expensive, but that’s Emma Ross. I’m not going to miss it.
