The traditional Beijing yard house, or siheyuan, is a special building that has experienced the test of time since the Ming Dynasty. It’s not just a house, but a symbol of traditional Chinese family life. Its name, which means “four-sided yard”, comes from its design. The central yard of a siheyuan serves as the heart of the home, and is used for daily activities.
In a siheyuan, each side of the yard is a living area with a different purpose. The southern side is usually used for the main gate, while the eastern and western sides are guest rooms. The northern side is often the most private, used for family bedrooms or living spaces. The siheyuan’s open design is so special that it helps bring in plenty of sunlight and fresh air. This makes the house bright. The yard provides a place of relaxation from the busy streets outside.
Nowadays, the number of siheyuans in Beijing has decreased over the years. With the city’s modernization, many yard houses were demolished to make way for apartments and business buildings.
Fortunately, there are growing actions to protect siheyuans. Many yard houses have been rebuilt and turned into hotels, museums and cultural centers, allowing visitors to enjoy the beauty of siheyuans. For those lucky enough to own a siheyuan, it’s a kind of memory and pride for a changing city. When modern development is making life more convenient, there’s nothing like the sense of history and community that a siheyuan brings.
11. The name “siheyuan” comes from ________.
A. its cultural meaning B. its building style C. its family history D. its special color

C. D.
13. What does the underlined word “demolished” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

14. Why do the growing actions protect and rebuild siheyuans?
A. To make people experience the modern life.
B. To help experts explore the traditional buildings.
C. To attract visitors to feel the beauty of siheyuans.
D. To allow owners to celebrate the benefits of siheyuans.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards the siheyuan?
A. The author strongly supports its protection.
B. The author is mainly worried about its future.
C. The author doesn’t care about its changes.
D. The author is not sure about its value.

Deng Jiaxian was a Chinese physicist, known as the Father of China’s Atomic Bomb (原子弹). Born in Anhui Province, Deng attended the National Southwestern Associated University in 1941 and went to America for further study in physics. He studied a lot and got much useful knowledge.
After graduation, he didn’t accept the well-paid positions and superb research conditions provided by the American government or universities. Instead, he returned to Beijing in 1950 to work on nuclear research (核研究).
Deng faced great difficulties at that time because there was no such research information to learn from and there were few scientists. He worked with a group of recent college graduates and used abacuses (算盘) for calculation. It took about a month to finish a stage of calculation and about a year to calculate it nine times.
For about eight years, Deng worked very hard at the Gobi Desert nuclear testing site in northwest China.
In October 1964, under Deng’s leadership, China successfully tested its first atomic bomb. In June 1967, China’s first hydrogen bomb test was also carried out successfully. In 1979, a parachute (降落伞) failure happened during one experiment, which caused an atomic bomb to crash to the ground, but it did not set off. Deng knew the danger of cleaning up the crashed bomb. “You are young; you can’t go to do this,” Deng said to his colleagues (同事). So he picked up the broken pieces of the bomb himself instead of sending his team.
Deng’s wife, a doctor, learned that Deng had touched the broken pieces of the atomic bomb, and ordered him to return to Beijing for a full body check. The results showed that he had been badly hurt by deadly nuclear radiation (辐射). However, he still chose to return to the test site and continued to solve the problem himself.
In 1986, at age 62, Deng passed away because of the radiation. As a national hero, he was awarded the Two Bombs and One Satellite Merit Medal in 1999.
21. What does the underlined word “superb” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. Peaceful. B. Excellent. C. Different. D. Difficult.
22. What can we infer (推断) from the text?
A. Deng’s wife was greatly worried about Deng’s health condition.
B. Deng’s nuclear research was based on many scientists’ hard work.
C. Deng used abacuses for calculation because they made fewer mistakes.
D. Deng never took safety measures when picking up the broken pieces of the bomb.
23. What’s the correct order of the following events?
① China successfully tested its first atomic bomb.
② A parachute failure happened during one experiment.
③ China’s first hydrogen bomb test was carried out successfully.
④ Deng Jiaxian picked up the broken pieces of the bomb himself.
A. ①②③④ B. ①③②④ C. ②①③④ D. ③②①④
24. What does the author mainly want to tell us in the text?
A. The history and development of China’s nuclear program.
B. The greatest hero winning a Merit Medal in Chinese history.
C. A Chinese physicist who achieved his dream with hard work.
D. A national hero who gave his whole life to China’s nuclear program.
B 22. A 23. B 24. D

根据倒数第三段“In October 1964,...tested its first atomic bomb.”,“In June 1967, China’s first hydrogen bomb test was also carried out successfully.”,“In 1979, a parachute failure happened...”和“So he picked up the broken pieces of the bomb himself...”

开头用“Have you ever dreamed of...”
固定搭配need to do sth.
这里指代前文的The project,要修饰后面的first passengers,需要用形容词性物主代词,所以it变its。
固定结构from...to...
Is Your Brain Rotting from Too Much Screen Time?
Have you ever felt your mind go “blank” after scrolling (1) on your phone for hours? If yes, you might be experiencing something called “brain rot”!
The term “brain rot” was first used in 1854, but today it describes what happens when we spend too much time online—especially on short videos or social apps. In 2024, Collins even named it Word of the Year because so many people are talking about it.
What does brain rot feel like? You might forget why you walked into a room... or look for your phone while holding it! More seriously, it can make it harder to think clearly, solve problems, or stay calm. Your mood might swing (2) quickly from happy to upset—for no clear reason.
Good news: you don’t need medicine to fix it! Just reduce screen time. Try going offline for a few hours. Read a real book (not a 3-minute video summary!), play sports, or chat face to face with friends. These simple habits help your brain rest and recharge (3).
Think of your brain like a garden. If you water it with good habits—like sleep, reading, and real conversations—it will grow strong. And soon, flowers of creativity (4), focus, and joy will bloom inside you!
Clear Your Screen, Give Your Brain Fresh Air!

“You may change your feelings rapidly from joy to sadness without any cause.” 文中“mood might swing quickly”对应change your feelings rapidly;“for no clear reason”对应without any cause,两句表达含义一致,是同义句。
