Mary has always bcen onc of the best students in her class. She often says to
herself:"If I try a bit harder,I can improve still more."Once again,her grades top
the list when she enters high school. But then she begins to worry:"How can I keep
this up?What if I get a bad grade?What would others think?How can I look
myself in the mirror if I'm not perfect(完美的)?
Mary is an example of a top student whose outstanding performance in school
has made her a perfectionist.A perfectionist is someone who wants everything to
be perfect. They set very high goals for themselves and are often too hard on
themselves when they fall short of those goals.
A study of students from 12 to 19 years old shows that doing very well at
school is a common reason why students become perfectionists.People used to
think that perfectionism helps students get better grades. But the new study says the
opposite(相反的):doing well first makes students want to be more perfect..When
students get good grades again and again, they want to do even better. And as they
find they can reach their high goals, they set even higher goals. So good grades
push them to become perfectionists, not the other way around.
Doing well at school has many benefits. However, the new study shows that
academic success(学业成a功)may come with certain costs. Some top students
come to see their good grades as both a responsibility(责任)and a burden(负担),
They feel they must keep their "perfect"image all the time.So they are likely to
live in fear:fear of making mistakes, fear of doing badly in exams, and fear of
losing the respect of others. When this happens, they have fallen into the trap
of perfectionism
There are many top students like Mary who are used to getting the best grades.
They have the idea that their lives would be destroyed if they ever failed. So it is
very important for these students to learn not only how to get good grades, but also
how to deal with success without falling into the trap of perfectionism.
北师大实验中学2026-2027学年度第一学期期中试卷初一年级英语第10页,共15页
52.What do the words "fall short of'in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Fail to meet.
B.Hold on to
C.Refuse to raise.
D.Keep up with
53.What can we learn from the new study in the passage?
A.More criticism pushes students to reach their goals.
B.Top students benefit greatly from being perfectionists.
C.Perfectionism drives students to better their learning habits.
D.High academic achievement is likely to deepen perfectionism
54.Which of the following does the writer probably agree?
A.Making mistakes comes with certain costs.
B.Getting good grades stops students from having fun.
C.Students can actually grow from challenges in their studies
D.Students should learn to properly deal with academic success
55.What is the writer's main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To advise students against having high expectations.
B.To warn students not to be caught up in perfectionism.
C.To show the benefits perfectionism may bring to students.
D.To discuss how to keep perfect images at school all the time.

The Power of"Yet"
Most pcople have a fixcd mindsct, belicving they are cither naturally good at
something or will never be good at it.A growth mindset is different. It sees ability
as a process-"not yet"instead of"can't".
Psychologist(心理学家)Carol Dweck once gave a spcech on the power of
"yet"at Stanford University."In a high school in Chicago,if students didn't pass
tests, they got the grade 'not yet'".I thought,"Isn't that wonderful?"Because if
you fail,you're nowhere;but if you get'not yet',you're on a learning curve()
-a path into the future.
"Not yet"also helped her understand something important early in her career
(职业生涯).To find out how children deal with challenges,.she gave ten-year-olds
some problems that were difficult for them.
She was surprised to find that some of them reacted positively. They said
things like "I love a challenge!"They understood that their abilities could grow
through hard work.In other words, they had a growth mindset.
But for other children,it was tragic. From their fixed mindset, their abilities
had been tested once and for all. They felt what they could do in that moment
defined (them completely. If they couldn't do it now, they never could.
So what did those children do next?In one study, after a failure on a test, they
said they would cheat next time instead of studying more.In another study, they
looked for someone who did worse to feel better. And in many studies, they ran
from difficulty.
Fixed Mind-Set
Growth Mind-Set
Dweck also mentioned research by Moser and his
colleagues ()They measured brain activity as
children faced errors. The fixed mindset brain on the
