There’s an autumn day that I recall every time I find myself stuck in the busy life. Back then, as a teenager, I was caught up in the rush of school, social activities, and the pressure of upcoming college applications. It was my neighbor, Mr Jensen, who brought me back to earth.
Mr Jensen was a quiet man in his seventies who lived alone in the house next door.
Despite our age difference, we had a shared love for gardening, a hobby that formed an unlikely friendship between us.
One sunny afternoon, feeling troubled and anxious, I decided to take a break from my studies. I headed outside to my backyard garden where I began to weed (除草), my worries pouring into each pull of unwanted greenery. Mr Jensen was there as usual, looking after his roses in full flower.
Seeing my worried expression, he walked over and silently started weeding with me. After a few minutes of shared silence, he finally spoke up. “You know,” he began, “weeding a garden is a lot like going through life.” Curiously, I stopped and looked at him. He continued, “Sometimes, we focus so much on the weeds — the problems and difficulties — that we forget to enjoy the flowers.” He pointed to the beautiful roses in his garden, their lively colors shining in the afternoon sun. “Don’t forget to appreciate the roses, even as you deal with the weeds.”
That simple wisdom hit me hard. I had been so focused on my problems, on the stress of my future, that I had forgotten to enjoy my present — the friendships, the joy of learning new things, and the beauty of simply being alive.
That day, Mr Jensen taught me a life lesson that I’ve carried with me ever since. Now, whenever I find myself troubled by life’s “weeds”, I stop, take a deep breath, and remember to appreciate my “roses”.
4. How did the author first feel before gardening?
A. Stressed about daily pressures. B. Excited by college applications.
C. Content with personal hobbies. D. Annoyed at unwanted weeds.
5. What do the roses stand for in the text?
A. The old age. B. The busy lifestyle.
C. The beauty of life. D. The trouble of youths.
6. Which word best describes Mr Jensen?
A. Humorous. B. Brave. C. Energetic. D. Wise.
7. What lesson did Mr Jensen want to teach the author?
A. Be patient with challenges. B. Focus on solving problems.
C. Try hard to reach personal goals. D. Take time to relax and enjoy life.
C
We all know the power of music to make us feel better when we’re stressed. But this relaxing effect goes much deeper than our feelings: Music changes our brain, remodeling neural (神经的) pathways and changing our physical state along the way. It seems that this power is unique to music over other comforting sounds, like nature sounds, according to a new study. Music calms our heart rates, lowers our skin conductivity and gets our cortisol (皮质醇) levels — the stress hormone — in control.
“After a stressful experience, the brain can remain in a state of high alert (警惕),” says Yi Du, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing. “Nature sounds may provide a calming background, but music also takes the brain on an organized journey — tension builds; expectations develop; the tension is finally resolved.”
To find out music’s unique neural effects, Du and her workmates conducted a series of experiments. First, a group of 30 participants were asked to listen to music and another 30 to water sounds in nature before and after performing a task designed to stress them out — mental math exercises. The researchers measured the participants’ stress responses, including their heart rates and cortisol levels, before and after the test. Those who listened to music recovered more quickly from stress. In a second experiment with a different group of participants who underwent brain scanning with functional magnetic resonance imaging, or fMRI (功能性磁共振成像), the researchers found that listening to music, not nature sounds, strengthened specific neural pathways.
Du says more work is needed to fully understand how music calms a stressed brain. “We studied healthy young adults experiencing short-term stress, and these findings may not apply directly to patients,” she says. “Still, the study helps to explain earlier research that examined the connection between music and stress responses.”
8. How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A. By explaining a nature sound. B. By presenting a common sense.
C. By comparing human cortisol levels. D. By describing personal life experiences.
9. What does Du mainly stress in paragraph 2?
A. The effects of music on the brain.
B. The types of people’s mental states.
C. The differences between stress and tension.
D. The similarities between music and nature sounds.
10. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The reasons why stress influences brains.
B. The methods and results of the experiments.
C. The difficulties of measuring participants’ heart rates.
D. The strengths and weaknesses of fMRI in brain research.
11. What can we learn about the new study from the last paragraph?
A. It offers support for earlier related research.
B. Its findings have been used on patients directly.
C. It was carried out on patients with long-term stress.
D. It has fully explained how music calms stressed brains.
D
Rising sea levels are slowing the Earth’s spin (自转), lengthening the average of a day. The present speed of this increase is higher than any recorded speed over at least the past 3.6 million years.
Most people take it for granted that a single day lasts for 24 hours exactly. But in reality, the length of any given day differs for different reasons, including the moon’s gravity (引力) on the planet and atmospheric conditions. Unbelievably, climate change is expected to have more influence on day length than the moon by the end of this century, according to Benedikt Soja, a co-author of the study. “Even though the change is only milliseconds, it can cause problems in space navigation, GPS systems, etc., which require accurate information on the Earth’s spin,” Benedikt said.
Rising ocean levels and the decreasing polar ice affect the Earth’s spin. The slowdown is linked to weight shifting (转移) from the poles to the planet’s midsection. Geoscientist Kiani Shahvandi compared the effect to “a figure skater” who spins more slowly when she opens her arms, and more rapidly when she keeps her hands close to her body.
Researchers show that the speed of increase in day length is higher now than it has been for millions of years. The researchers analyzed the chemical composition of fossils (化石) to infer sea-level changes over the past 3.6 million years. Then they worked out the related changes in the length of a day. Using advanced technology to better model the physics of sea-level change, they found that, as the planet’s ice formed and melted, day length fluctuated in lockstep. But today’s speed of increase in day length is abnormal.
“Once, around 2 million years ago, the speed of change in the length of a day was nearly comparable to today’s. Yet, no time in history has had such rapid sea-level rise as the years 2000 to 2020,” Kiani said.
12. What does Benedikt think of the little change in day length?
A. It may speed up the Earth’s spin.
B. It may affect some technological areas.
C. It may lengthen days by several seconds.
D. It may have no effect on the moon by 2100.
13. Why does the author mention “a figure skater” in paragraph 3?
A. To show the source of the Earth’s spin.
B. To prove the importance of weight shifting.
C. To explain the slowdown of the Earth’s spin.
D. To compare the spin speeds of different objects.
14. What do the underlined words “fluctuated in lockstep” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Changed accordingly. B. Became normal.
C. Made little difference. D. Remained the same.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. The Earth’s Spin Rule B. Secrets to Sea Level Rise
C. The Moon Influences Day Length D. Climate Change Slows the Earth’s Spin

This summer vacation, our school gave us a special summer task: taking part in a community volunteer program and handing in observation notes for teachers’ assessment (评估). I accepted the task gladly, thinking it would enrich my summer life.
Before the first activity, Mom handed me an old notebook and told me to record what I saw during volunteering. I agreed and put the notebook in my schoolbag. However, I worried that I was not good at writing and might fail to record my experiences perfectly. I found that when I shared my volunteer experiences every evening, Mom would keep a small notebook in her hand, writing something quietly, yet I never stopped to ask what she had written down. Besides, Dad would sit beside us, listening silently. He sometimes picked up his pen to revise some words, for he worked as a text editor and had formed such a habit.
At the community center, my main job was to look after old people and organize small outdoor activities. Most of my classmates treated the work lightly, checking their watches now and then, hoping to finish early. Differently, I devoted myself to the volunteer work. I helped the old carry chairs, patiently listened to their life stories, and watered the lovely flowers in the yard. Though I gained a lot of warm experiences every day, I was still worried. I had no idea how to organize my words to write a satisfying observation note.
The summer vacation passed quickly, and the volunteer program finally came to an end. As the school required, all participants had to hand in observation notes for teachers’ final assessment. Watching my classmates hand in their notebooks, I felt anxious. My notebook was still blank (空白的), for I had never found out how to record my experiences properly. Would my poor writing ruin my volunteer efforts? I began to doubt myself.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
On the first day of school, I went home anxiously with my notebook.

【答案】8. B 9. A 10. B 11. A

【答案】12. B 13. C 14. A 15. D
【解析】
【导语】本文主要介绍海平面上升减缓地球自转、延长一天时长,并说明了该现象带来的影响与相关研究发现。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Even though the change is only milliseconds, it can cause problems in space navigation, GPS systems, etc., which require accurate information on the Earth’s spin (尽管变化只有几毫秒,但它会给太空导航、全球定位系统等需要精确地球自转信息的系统带来问题。)”可知,本尼迪克特认为日长的微小变化会对一些科技领域造成影响。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“The slowdown is linked to weight shifting (转移) from the poles to the planet’s midsection. Geoscientist Kiani Shahvandi compared the effect to “a figure skater” who spins more slowly when she opens her arms, and more rapidly when she keeps her hands close to her body. (这种减速与重量从两极转移到地球中部有关。地球科学家基亚尼·沙赫万迪把这个效应比作“一名花样滑冰运动员”:她张开手臂时转得更慢,双手贴近身体时转得更快。)”可知,作者举出花样滑冰选手的例子是为了解释地球自转速度变慢的原理。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段中的“The researchers analyzed the chemical composition of fossils (化石) to infer sea-level changes over the past 3.6 million years. Then they worked out the related changes in the length of a day. Using advanced technology to better model the physics of sea-level change, they found that, as the planet’s ice formed and melted, day length fluctuated in lockstep. (研究人员分析化石的化学成分,以此推断过去360万年间的海平面变化。随后他们算出与之相关的日长变化。借助先进技术更好地模拟海平面变化的物理机制,他们发现,随着地球上冰层形成与消融,日长 fluctuated in lockstep。)”可知,冰雪的形成与消融会带动日长一同变化,因此,画线短语暗示“随之改变”。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是首段中的“Rising sea levels are slowing the Earth’s spin (自转), lengthening the average of a day. The present speed of this increase is higher than any recorded speed over at least the past 3.6 million years. (海平面上升正在减缓地球自转,拉长平均日长。目前这种增长速度至少在过去360万年里前所未有。)”可知,文章围绕气候变化引发海平面上升,进而放缓地球自转展开介绍,所以“气候变化减缓地球自转”最能概括全文核心,适合作为最佳标题。

【答案】范文
On the first day of school, I went home anxiously with my notebook. Sensing my unease, Mom asked softly, “What has troubled you these days?” I told her the whole truth in a low voice, ready for her blame. Surprisingly, she showed no anger. “The point is not perfect notes, but real growth from your experiences,” she said. Then she walked into her study and took out her thick notebook full of neat handwriting. It turned out that the warm moments I spent with the old and my small changes during volunteering were all recorded by her.
Dad looked at me and said, “Your mom has always quietly recorded your growth.” This unexpected realization brought me warm tears and deep reflection. Then I carefully sorted out Mom’s detailed records together with my recent memories bit by bit. Dad polished my notes carefully. And we finished the observation paper jointly. The next day, I handed in our work confidently and got high praise from my teachers. Looking at the two ordinary notebooks, I finally truly felt the warmest love from my parents, which had accompanied and nurtured my growth quietly all along.
