Our school had a long, old wall around the playground. I didn't like it at all. The wall was old and ugly. There were messy graffiti (涂鸦) marks everywhere. Every time I walked past it, I felt unhappy.
One day, my friends and I made a decision. “Let's do something!” We brought buckets (水桶), brushes, soap, and water. We cleaned the wall together after school. However, the wall was too old. The marks on it were hard to clear away even though we tried many times.
We sat on the ground and thought, “How can we really make the wall better?” Then Olivia, the best artist in our class, had a great idea. “What if we make the wall beautiful by painting something new?” she said.
Our teacher loved the idea and talked to the school. Soon, the school agreed to hold a Graffiti Art Competition at school. Every class could paint one part of the school wall. Everyone was excited and our eyes lit up.
We planned what we wanted to draw carefully. On the painting day, some classes painted animals, some painted plants. The wall came alive with bright colors and pretty pictures. Laughter filled the playground.
When we finished, the wall was totally different from what it used to be. And then something wonderful happened. No one painted messy graffiti on it again. Students even stopped to enjoy the pictures. It became one popular place at school.

When reading, I can easily get lost in a book. I often feel like I’ve gone on an adventure after a few hours of reading. When I was 6, I started reading Harry Potter, which was difficult to read for a child of that age, but I loved it and kept reading it.
Thanks to early reading, I’ve never struggled (挣扎) with spelling problems, and I have a large vocabulary. Now, as a student, I have less time to read. I can only read freely during summer holidays, so I relish these moments deeply. I lose myself in the stories and forget all about my worries in reality.
______ ▲ If you are an English learner, I suggest you read the English version (版本) of books that you have often read in your first language. Reading stories is a great way to build your vocabulary and improve your English. I have read Harry Potter in my mother tongue (母
语) many times and I am really familiar with the story. So when I read its English version, I found that it was easy to follow the story even if I didn’t understand every word.
Actually, you don’t need to understand every single word. If you get the main meaning of a sentence, that’s enough. You can also guess a word’s meaning from the story. If you love reading, you can open up a whole new world of English literature.
67. Why does the writer mention the experience of reading Harr y Potter in Paragraph 1?
A. To show the writer was a smart kid
B. To show the writer’s deep love for reading
C. To show Harry Potter was very popular then
D. To show Harry Potter is the writer’s favourite book
68. What does the underlined word “relish” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Hate. B. Study. C. Enjoy. D. Forget.
69. Which of the following can be put in “▲” in Paragraph 3?
A. Reading English books is not enough.
B. It is important for us to become a fast reader.
C. Besides Harry Potter, I read other books too.
D. I’ve also learnt something useful for language learning.
70. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Improve Your Reading Speed
B. Learn a Language by Reading
C. My Early Reading Experience
D. The Time to Read Harry Potter
第二节 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,简略回答问题。
Reading an English newspaper is a good way to improve a student’s language ability. As there are many useful words in an English newspaper, it may help students increase their vocabulary as well as improve their reading skills. But do students need to look over all the content (内容) of the newspaper? Here is the proper way to read an English newspaper.
The first step is to choose a right newspaper with good language. Then turn to the front page and read the headlines (标题) to know what has happened. As the most important things are put on the front page, it’s easy to find out what you’re interested in and then turn to the page to read it completely. There is no need to go through all the articles.
Secondly, read newspapers every day. Remember words through context (上下文), in which these words may appear repeatedly. Once they appear several times, you will remember them easily. Don’t look up every unknown word in your dictionary. You can try to guess the meaning between sentences. If your guess is wrong, don’t give up. Keep reading, and you will become familiar (熟悉的) with the words after reading them several times in different texts.
Reading English newspapers makes us knowledgeable. It can not only help us know what is happening in the world but also improve our language ability.
