Fiona was a very popular girl at school. She was clever and fun, and got on well with everyone.
It was no accident that Fiona was so popular. From an early age she did her best to be kind and friendly to everyone. She invited the whole class to her birthday party, and from time to time she would give presents to everybody. She felt very lucky; no other student had so many friends at school.
But everything changed on National Friendship Day. On that day, in class everyone had to make three presents to give to their three best friends. However, when all the presents had been made and shared out among classmates, Fiona was the only one who had not received a present! She spent hours crying. How could it be possible? Everyone came and tried to console (安慰) her for a while. But each one only stayed for a short time before leaving.
When she got home that night, Fiona asked her mother where she could find true friends. “Fiona, my dear,” answered her mother. “You’re a lovely girl, but you can’t be a close friend to everybody. You cannot buy friends with a smile or a few good words.”
Hearing this, Fiona thought about her mother. Her mother was always ready to help her, and she bore all of Fiona’s dislikes and problems, and she always forgave (原谅) her, and she loved her a lot... That was what made friends! Fiona smiled from ear to ear, realizing that she already had the best friend anyone could ever want.

A video (视频) creator used AI to “resurrect (复活)” his grandmother who died many years ago. He even had a video call with “her”. As a result, some people are for (支持) this practice, while others are against it. Let’s see the ideas of two groups.
Using AI to “bring back” loved ones helps people face sadness. People who have close relationships with family members might feel really sad after losing their loved ones. This feeling affects their daily life. AI can imitate their loved ones’ voices and words to give hope to the living. During the Qingming Festival, people often talk to their dead loved ones when visiting their graves (墓). This can help with the heavy sadness people feel at that time. Similarly, talking to the AI that acts like their loved one could reduce (减少) such sadness. Technology (科技) keeps improving, so we should try new ways to “meet” those we miss.
—Group A
The resurrection (复活) of family and friends sounds great. But in truth, it’s not very good. People shouldn’t put their feelings and love for the dead onto AI — a lifeless tool. This could stop people from facing the reality (现实) of death and moving on. AI technology uses pictures and recordings to create something that looks and sounds like the person who died. But it can’t create the person’s soul (灵魂) and mind. AI can never be a real person. It may be helpful for a while, but it also causes more sadness. We should respect life and focus on every moment we have with our loved ones.
—Group B
31. What is this passage mainly about?
A. Ideas on different ways to improve AI.
B. Ideas on using AI to “bring back” loved ones.
C. Ideas on how to deal with sadness in daily life.
32. What is the Chinese meaning of the underlined word “imitate” ?
33. What does AI help with during the Qingming Festival according to the passage?
A. It helps people stay with those they miss.
B. It allows people to visit the graves of their loved ones in new ways.
C. It reduces people’s sadness over losing their loved ones.
34. What does Group B advise?
A. Treat AI as a real person.
B. Treasure moments with loved ones.
C. Use AI to remember the dead.
35. Who thinks it’s good to “resurrect” dead people with AI?
A. The writer. B. Group A. C. Group B.

Chen Hao is a 14-year-old boy from a small town. He loves science and making things with his own hands.
Chen Hao’s grandmother is over eighty. Three years ago, she fell down and hurt her leg, so she has had to stay in bed for a long time. Chen Hao noticed that it was hard for her to turn on the light or pick up the TV remote control (遥控器) by herself. “I want to make something to help her,” he said.
With the help of his science teacher and some books, Chen Hao began to design a small robot. It was not easy. He failed many times, and some people said he was too young to do such a thing. But he never gave up. It took him more than one year to make the special robot. It can turn on the lights, play music, and bring small things to the bed—all with simple voice orders.
Now Chen Hao’s grandmother can do many things without others’ help. “My grandson has given me a new life,” she said with a big smile.
Chen Hao has won a prize at the city science competition. But what makes him happiest is not the prize. “I just want to use science to help the people I love,” he said.

Last year, my family moved to a new house and it had a yard. Dad planted a thin bamboo shoot there, and I thought it was too weak to grow. I even forgot to water it for weeks.
One summer, a long drought (干旱) happened in our city. The grass turned yellow, and the flowers died. I felt sorry for the bamboo. Its dry leaves were lying everywhere on the ground. But I was busy with my English exams and had no time to take care of it. When the exams ended badly, I felt sad and I didn’t know what to do next.
One evening, I walked into the yard again. I was surprised to see the little bamboo had grown taller! Its leaves were green again, and it stood straight in the wind. Dad said bamboo has empty but strong stalks (茎). It’s soft but tough (坚韧的), so it can dig deep into the earth for water when it’s dry.
That bamboo taught me a lesson. Life has its ups and downs, just like the drought. But if we stay strong and keep trying, we can get through anything. Now, whenever I face difficulties, I think of that little bamboo-small but brave, and always growing.
➢ The writer’s family moved to a new house ____45____ a yard. The dad planted a thin bamboo shoot, and the writer thought it was so weak that it ____46____ grow.

1. students in our grade are taking a P.E. test on the playground.
A. Thousands of B. Five thousands C. Five thousand of
【答案】A
B选项形式错误;C选项Five thousand of后面需要搭配the/these等限定词,本句空格后直接是students,结构不成立;A选项Thousands of用法正确。
2. —Some bamboo can grow almost one metre in one day.
—Really? It’s one of ________ plants in the world.
A. useful B. the most useful C. more useful
useful有用的,原级;the most useful最有用的,最高级;more useful更有用的,比较级。 之一”,故此处要用最高级the most useful,故选B。
3. —Last night, everyone in my class attended the concert ________ Jim.
—Oh, what a pity
A. besides B. except C. against
4. — ______ bad news!
— Yes, I feel so ______ after hearing it.
A. How; disappointed B. What a; disappointing C. What; disappointed
“...bad news!”
5. —________ do you think of the weather in Beijing and Shanghai?
—The weather in Beijing is colder than ________ in Shanghai.
A. What, that B. What, it C. How, one
【答案】A
第一空,固定句型“What do you think of...?” A项正确。
6. My dress is similar ______ yours, but it is different ______ color.
A. to, from B. to, in C. as, from
方面”,构成短语be different in…,意为“在……
7. — ________ the population of your hometown?
— About 50,000. And most of the population ________ farmers.
A. What’s; are B. What’s; is C. How many; is
【答案】A
What’s…? 此处“most of the population”指大部分人,故谓语动词用are。应填What’s;are。
8. —John, congratulations ________ winning the first prize at the school festival.
—It’s such a wonderful experience for me. Thank you for inviting me ________ the festival.
A. to; to attend B. on; attend C. on; to attend
congratulations on doing sth.意为“祝贺 (某人) 做某事”,固定短语,第一空填写on;invite sb. to do sth.
9. I wonder ________ the speech about smart learning will be held in the school this Friday.
A. that B. if C. what
that 无实义;if是否;what什么。 应填if。
10. Your lifestyle should ________ your health. Eat well and exercise more.
A. be connected with B. play a part C. live up to
【答案】A
be connected with与……有关;play a part起作用,后要加in才能接宾语;live up to不辜负。根据后句“Eat well and exercise more.” 故选A。

use sth. to do sth.
有益”;be famous for“因……出名”、be interested in“对……
be afraid to do sth.

26. Fiona tried to be kind and friendly to everyone when she was very young.
27. Besides Fiona, everyone in the class received presents on National Friendship Day.
28. Fiona had more close friends than any other student in her school.
29. Fiona’s mother advised her to stop being friendly to so many classmates.
30. Fiona finally understood the true meaning of friendship.
28. B 29. B

根据第二段中“From an early age she did her best to be kind and friendly to everyone.”
根据第三段中“Fiona was the only one who had not received a present!”
根据第二段中“no other student had so many friends at school.”及第三段中“Fiona was the only one who had not received a present!”
根据第四段中“You cannot buy friends with a smile or a few good words.”
根据最后一段中“Fiona smiled from ear to ear, realizing that she already had the best friend anyone could ever want.”
(C)
A. The writer. B. Group A. C. Group B.
B 32. A 33. C 34. B 35. B
划线词所在句子为:“AI can imitate their loved ones’ voices and words to give hope to the living.”,结合语境,AI通过技术手段去“模仿”已故亲人的声音和话语,从而给生者带来希望,因此“imitate”意为“模仿”。
在Group A的观点中,文章提到:“During the Qingming Festival, people often talk to their dead loved ones...Similarly, talking to the AI that acts like their loved one could reduce such sadness.”,说明在清明节期间,AI可以通过模拟亲人与人们对话,帮助减少人们失去亲人后的悲伤。
在Group B的观点中,文章最后建议:“We should respect life and focus on every moment we have with our loved ones.”,说明Group B建议人们应该珍惜与亲人在一起的每一个时刻。
文章第一段提到“some people are for this practice”,随后给出了Group A的观点,Group A认为用AI“复活”亲人能减少悲伤、带来希望,说明Group A认为这种做法是好的。

But he never gave up. It took him more than one year to make the special robot. It can turn on the lights, play music, and bring small things to the bed—all with simple voice orders.
Now Chen Hao’s grandmother can do many things without others’ help. “My grandson has given me a new life,” she said with a big smile.

I’m glad to receive your letter. My best friend is Tom. He is a tall boy with big eyes. He is very outgoing and friendly. We have something in common. For example, we both enjoy playing basketball on weekends. However, there are also some differences between us. He is quieter than me, while I am more active in class.
