For a long time, I was the kind of person who always said yes to everything. I said yes to things I wanted to do, but also often said yes to things I didn’t like. This was a people-pleasing technique. I just wanted to make people happy and thought this would show I could do it all.
I filled my schedule with everything, from helping out at my kids’ school to joining lots of activities. But then, I faced some tough challenges, like health problems and my job loss. These challenges made me see I was too busy and tired.
Suddenly, I found the beauty of having the time to choose how I wanted to spend my days. I learnt that saying no is sometimes just as good as saying yes. I realised I was putting pressure on myself to always help others, but I forgot about taking care of myself.
Now, I think more before I say yes to something. Taking a moment to pause has really brought about changes to me. It’s not about not helping my friends and family; it’s about making sure I’m OK too.
I’m teaching my kids it’s fine to say no sometimes. It’s important to help others, but we also need to look after ourselves. We can’t help anyone if we run down. Saying no is an important part of taking care of ourselves and staying healthy.

Some people have trouble with being perfect. Others always look down on themselves. Some work hard to please everyone. We all have our challenges! It’s important to find our strengths and weaknesses, and show acceptance, care and love to ourselves.
If you look down upon yourself, it is time that you tell the truth to the world, “I am beautiful! I am worthy! I am talented! I can have a life with happiness and joy!” Just keep in mind: Happiness is not dependent upon (依赖于) losing weight, or taking a wild adventure; happiness is a natural state (状态) of mind when you accept yourself!
When you accept yourself, you begin to see and experience the world in a new light. You won’t easily give up a great idea just because it seems hard to realise. Instead, you begin to see its possibility. More importantly, self-acceptance cares less about what others think, but focuses more on what you truly want!
Put self-acceptance into practice, and you will realise how strong and powerful you really are. When you’re honest with yourself, you’re also more willing to listen to useful advice. Your heart opens and you’re more willing to ask for help when you need it!

八、任务型阅读 (本大题共5小题,每小题1分,共5分)
阅读下面短文,根据短文内容完成句子。
Do you ever compare yourself to other people? We are all different in our own way. Self-acceptance (自我接纳) can help you feel happier and better about yourself.
What is self-acceptance?
Self-acceptance means learning to accept the things that make you who you are. As well as being thankful for what you’re good at, like sports or science, self-acceptance also means valuing the parts of you that don’t shine very brightly. A 12-year-old girl, Lily, says self-acceptance means “knowing your own weaknesses and strengths (强项), and accepting who you are no matter what other people say or think.”
Why is self-acceptance good for you?
When you accept who you are, you worry less about things you can’t change. The Anna Freud Centre, a charity (慈善机构) that helps young people, says everyone can feel that they have to be perfect, but that makes us forget about the little things that make us special, because we’re so busy trying to meet someone else’s standards. Learning to accept everything about yourself can also help you find what you’re really good at.
How can you accept yourself?
Start by making a list of all the things you like about yourself. Maybe you’re good at cooking. Also, try saying kind, happy things to yourself in a mirror every morning. Think up ways to treat yourself, such as taking a long bath or eating delicious ice-cream. But don’t forget it’s important to eat healthy food and get enough sleep.
61. Self-acceptance can help you ________________ about yourself.
62. Lily thinks self-acceptance is knowing both your strong and weak points, and accepting who you are no matter what ________________.
63. It makes you fail to notice the little things that make you special because you’re so busy ________________.
64. Starting by ________________ about yourself is a good way to accept yourself.
65. But remember it’s important to eat healthy food and ________________.
【答案】61. feel happier and better
62. other people say or think
63. trying to meet someone else’s standards
64. making a list of all the things you like
65. get enough sleep
【解析】
【导语】本文介绍了什么是自我接纳、自我接纳的好处以及接纳自我的可行方法,告诉我们要接纳真实的自己。

第二段“ A 12-year-old girl, Lily, says self-acceptance means ‘knowing your own weaknesses and strengths (强项), and accepting who you are no matter what other people say or think.’”说明自我接纳就是清楚自己的优缺点,无论别人怎么说、怎么想,都接纳真实的自己,故填“other people say or think”。
【63题详解】
第三段“The Anna Freud Centre, a charity (慈善机构) that helps young people, says everyone can feel that they have to be perfect, but that makes us forget about the little things that make us special, because we’re so busy trying to meet someone else’s standards.”
最后一段“Start by making a list of all the things you like about yourself.”说明接纳自己可以从列出所有你喜欢自己的地方开始,by为介词,后接动名词形式,故填“making a list of all the things you like”。

Dear Peter,
I’m glad to receive your email. You asked me how I deal with different ideas with my parents about hobbies. In fact, I once argued with my parents. Let me tell you what happened.
Last month, I wanted to spend more time on my hobby—playing basketball. But my parents thought I should spend all weekends on study. We argued about the time plan. Later I calmed down and talked with them patiently. I told them basketball made me strong and relaxed. We finally made a deal. I can play basketball for one hour each weekend after finishing my homework.

Growing up on a farm, Banting was not a clever student, but he worked hard. After entering college, he turned to medicine. When World War I came, Banting became a doctor in the army. After the war, the young Canadian returned home to work as a doctor.
Banting liked reading medical articles. After learning that a neighbour’s child died of diabetes (糖尿病), he began to follow articles about the illness.
Banting had some ideas about how to deal with the illness. In 1920, with the help of Dr Macleod at the University of Toronto, Banting got a small laboratory and an assistant named Charles Best.
Working day and night, they produced a preparation (药剂) called insulin (胰岛素). They first tested it on animals. ▲ All the animals they used in their experiments died. But they didn’t give up. After countless (无数的) tests, they finally succeeded in trying it on animals.
The first recorded human patient to receive insulin was a 14-year-old boy named Leonard. After treatment, his health improved greatly. They did it!
In 1923, Banting was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. He didn’t make money from his invention. Instead, he sold his patent (专利) for insulin to the University of Toronto for one dollar! In this way, insulin could be marketed cheaply to save thousands of lives.
Banting was a true hero.

31. According to the writer, which is a people-pleasing technique?
A. Making a promise to others. B. Helping others out of trouble.

A. We shouldn’t say yes to everyone.
B. It’s necessary to say no to anybody.
C. It’s OK to say no if we are unable to do a thing.
D. Always saying yes to others can improve relationships.
C
