Chinese words are not only symbols, but also a carrier of great culture. Many have directional (方向的) words in them, such as mai-dong-xi or shang-ce-suo. Today, let’s talk about these interesting words!
When going shopping, Chinese people say mai-dong-xi. It’s said that in the Tang Dynasty, there were two popular markets in Chang’an. One was called the East Market, and the other was called the West Market. When shopping, most people usually went to the East Market first, and then went to the West Market. As time went by, people developed it into a habit and they started to describe shopping as mai-dong-xi.
In Chinese, we say yi-jian-xiang-zuo when we have different opinions. Why is it not yi-jian-xiang-you? Most people today are right-handed. They will feel uncomfortable if they try to use their left hand to write or use chopsticks. This was true in old times as well. So in ancient Chinese, “left” means being different, wrong or useless, such as yi-jian-xiang-zuo, while “right” stood for higher status (地位) than “left” for a long time in ancient China.
We use shang-ce-suo to mean “going to the bathroom” and xia-chu-fang to mean “going to the kitchen”. Why? In ancient times, the layout (布局) of rooms or houses was special in a certain way. The gate of the house faced south, with the bathroom in the northeast of the house and the kitchen in the southeast.
On maps, north is usually at the top while south is at the bottom. In Chinese, we talk about “the north” as shang and “the south” as xia. So people would say they were going “up” to the bathroom and “down” to the kitchen.
5. Why do Chinese people use mai-dong-xi for shopping?
A. Tang people preferred to travel east and west.
B. East goods were much better than west goods.
C. People formed a habit of visiting both old markets.
D. People only shopped in East Market in Chang’an.
6. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A. Most ancient people were left-handed. B. Left-handed people were good at writing.
C. “Left” always meant great ideas in history. D. Ancient Chinese valued the right side more.
7. Why is it shang-ce-suo instead of xia-ce-suo?
A. Old kitchens were higher than bathrooms.
B. North stands for “shang” according to maps.
C. The bathroom lay in the southeast of houses.
D. People usually climbed stairs to the bathroom.
8. What’s the main purpose of the text?
A. To describe different ancient Chinese house layouts.
B. To explain why ancient people preferred right hands.
C. To tell the long history of Tang-Dynasty old markets.
D. To introduce culture behind Chinese directional words.
【答案】5. C 6. D 7. B 8. D
【解析】
【导语】本文主要介绍汉语中包含方位的词语(如买东西、左右、上厕所)及其背后蕴含的历史与文化原因。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第2段“When shopping, most people usually went to the East Market first, and then went to the West Market.”可推知,唐朝长安人有东市和西市两个市场,购物时通常先去东市再去西市,形成了去两个市场买东西的习惯。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第3段“‘right’ stood for higher status... than ‘left’ for a long time in ancient China.”可推知,在古代中国,“右”代表的地位比“左”高,说明古人更重视右边。
【7题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第5段“On maps, north is usually at the top... In Chinese, we talk about ‘the north’ as shang”可推知,地图上北方通常在上方,汉语中把“北”称为“上”,而厕所在东北方位,所以用“上厕所”。
【8题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第1段“Chinese words are not only symbols, but also a carrier of great culture. Many have directional... words in them”可推知,全文旨在介绍汉语方位词背后所承载的文化内涵。

Home is more than a building. It’s a collection of feelings and memories.
Last Saturday, I decided to clean the old attic (阁楼). To my surprise, behind an old chair, I found a box filled with my old toys. My old teddy bear was on the top. Its fur was untidy and one eye was missing. As I picked it up, a warm feeling washed through my heart. I remembered I spent lots of nights talking to it about my feelings and dreams when I was a little girl. It wasn’t just a toy but my first friend.
Just then, Mum came up. She found me sitting on the floor, smiling with the bear in my hands. Instead of reminding me to clean, she sat down beside me. She began to share stories from my early years—funny stories I couldn’t remember. We laughed together excitedly about the silly things I used to say and do.
With those old memories in the quiet attic, I felt a deep sense of love. This special moment is meaningful to me. It reminded me that home is where your life’s story begins and where love always stays. I didn’t just find an old toy that day. I realized the true meaning of home.
9. How did the writer feel when she picked up the teddy bear?
A. Warm. B. Happy. C. Excited. D. Surprised.
10. What does the teddy bear mean to the girl?

C. She enjoys doing house-cleaning every day. D. She hopes to buy more toys for her daughter.

The Three Gorges Dam (三峡大坝), lying on the Yangtze River in Hubei Province, is one of the largest and most amazing engineering projects in the world. It stands proudly between the beautiful mountains of Xiling Gorge, showing the wisdom and hard work of the Chinese people.
The Yangtze River, China’s longest river, often caused serious floods in the past, bringing disasters to millions of people. To solve this problem and create clean energy, the Chinese government decided to build a huge dam.
People began to build the Three Gorges Dam in 1994. And it took over 12 years to complete. Thousands of workers used modern machines and technology to make this dream come true. They moved mountains, changed the river’s path to build the dam, which is about 2.3 kilometres long and 185 metres high—as tall as a 60-story building!
Today, the dam plays a key role in China. It has greatly reduced flood risks, protecting cities and farmlands. The dam’s power stations produce clean electricity for millions of homes and factories, helping reduce air pollution. Its connected vessel system (船闸通航系统) helps ships pass. Ships enter a lock, and gates close. Water level inside the lock rises or falls to match the next section. When the water levels become the same, gates open, and the ship moves to the next lock.
The Three Gorges Dam is not just a dam—it’s a symbol of courage and creativity of Chinese people. Visitors from around the world come to see this modern wonder. Students learn about its scientific achievements and the spirit of teamwork behind it. The dam teaches us that with determination, humans can overcome even the most difficult challenges of nature.
13. What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Xiling Gorge. B. The Yangtze River.
C. The Three Gorges Dam. D. Hubei Province.
14. Why did the Chinese government build the Three Gorges Dam?
A. To improve river sightseeing. B. To change the river’s birthplace.
C. To build more high-rise buildings. D. To prevent floods and produce clean energy.
15. What can we infer about the dam from the text?
A. It only serves for local tourists. B. It brings several benefits to China.
C. It causes new serious river disasters. D. It is mainly made by old-fashioned tools.
16. What is the main idea of the text?
A. The long history of the Yangtze River. B. The hard life of dam-building workers.

This big change is the result of a new program at his school. Starting from last term, his school has made housework part of the students’ homework in order to improve their life skills.
At the beginning of each month, every student gets a list of housework to do every weekend. Their parents help keep an eye on their performance. They can do housework, such as cleaning out closets, washing cups and cooking food. On holidays like Mother’s Day, students are asked to prepare gifts for their mothers.
Wang Dan, 13, has learnt several life skills through the program, including cooking. “I used to be afraid of fire,” she said. But she tried to overcome (克服) her fear and complete her cooking tasks.
At the same time, she also learnt how tired her mother was after doing housework every day. On Mother’s Day, she made a cake for her mother to show her thanks. “I’ve begun to better understand my parents and want to help them more,” she said.

C
A. An old toy. B. A new friend. C. Her first friend. D. Her first gift.
11. What can we know from the mother’s action?
A. She treasures her daughter’s memories. B. She wants to keep all old things at home.
C. She enjoys doing house-cleaning every day. D. She hopes to buy more toys for her daughter.
12. What’s the best title of the text?
A. A Lost Toy Bear B. A Relaxing Saturday
C. True Meaning of Home D. Warm Memories of Mum
D
C. The working rule of the ship lock system. D. The introduction to the Three Gorges Dam.

Zhang Li, a 12-year-old boy from Sichuan, used to be lazy. He hardly did any housework. But now, things have changed. Washing dishes, cooking and making the bed... all of these have become part of his daily life.
Other schools in Sichuan are also developing programs to teach their students life skills. On 2nd May, another middle school held a life skill competition. Students had to complete many tasks, including cooking and folding clothes. They showed their skills and proved (证明) that they are growing up.
