Frances Perkins may not be a household name, but as Women’s History Month begins, the former U.S. Secretary of Labor is finally receiving the recognition she deserves. Perkins, the first woman ever to hold a U.S. Cabinet position, will be added to the Maine Women’s Hall of Fame at the University of Maine. According to the Portland Press Herald, the Hall of Fame was established in 1990 to honor women who have improved the lives of other women and made a lasting impact.
Unlike most women of her time, Perkins, born in 1880, chose to focus on her education before marriage. She studied sociology and economics at Mount Holyoke College and continued her studies at the University of Chicago, the University of Pennsylvania, and Columbia University. She then began following her passion: helping working people. She started her career at Jane Addams’ Hull House in Chicago, which provided education and recreation to help working-class families escape poverty. Later, in New York, she fought for workplace safety laws and food safety regulations. From 1929 to 1933, she headed the New York State Department of Labor under Governor Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR).
When FDR became president, he asked Perkins to be his Secretary of Labor. She turned him down at first, knowing her appointment would meet strong opposition because she was a woman and not a union insider. However, FDR persisted. He promised to support her efforts to create what would become Social Security. That promise won her over. As Secretary of Labor, she became a driving force behind laws banning child labor, setting a minimum wage, and establishing the 40-hour work week.
Perkins left the government in 1945 but continued teaching and fighting for workers’ rights until her death in 1965. She was buried in her family’s land in Newcastle. In 2024, President Joe Biden declared the site as a national monument. Today, thanks to Frances Perkins, American workers can retire with Social Security payments, receive compensation (赔偿金) if injured on the job, and earn a minimum wage. Her influence, long overlooked, is finally being honored where it belongs.
4. Why was Maine Women’s Hall of Fame set up?
A. To introduce Roosevelt’s labor policies.
B. To remember Hull House founder Addams.
C. To record events in Women’s History Month.
D. To honor women who have helped other women greatly.
5. What did Perkins do at Hull House?
A. She taught workers economics. B. She created workplace safety laws.
C. She set up the 40-hour work week. D. She helped poor working-class families.
6. What does the underlined word “persisted” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Kept on trying. B. Agreed happily.
C. Apologized again. D. Passed away suddenly.
7. What is the text mainly about?
A. The early education of Frances Perkins. B. The laws made during FDR’s presidency.
C. The major contributions of Frances Perkins. D. The story of Maine Women’s Hall of Fame.

A new study published in Health Psychology by the American Psychological Association suggests that people trying to lose weight may benefit from eating the same meals repeatedly and keeping their daily calorie (卡路里) intake steady. According to the research, adults who followed more routine eating patterns lost more weight during a 12-week behavioral weight loss program than those who ate a more varied diet.
Lead author Dr. Charlotte Hagerman from the Oregon Research Institute explained that maintaining a healthy diet in today’s food environment requires constant effort and self-control. By creating routines around eating, she said, people can reduce that burden and make healthy choices feel more automatic. Participants who were taking part in a structured weight loss program used a mobile app to track everything they ate each day and weighed themselves daily using a wireless scale.
Using these records, the researchers analyzed detailed food data from 112 overweight or obese adults. They focused on the first 12 weeks of the program, a period when participants were usually most engaged and accurate in their tracking. The team measured how “routinized” each person’s diet was in two ways. First, they looked at caloric stability — how much a person’s daily calorie intake varied from day to day and between weekdays and weekends. Second, they examined dietary repetition — how often participants recorded the same meals and snacks over time.
The results showed that those who repeated many of the same foods lost an average of 5.9% of their body weight, compared with 4.3% among those whose diets were more varied. The study also found that greater day-to-day calorie consistency (一致性) was linked to better results. For every 100-calorie increase in daily calorie fluctuation (波动), weight loss decreased by about 0.6%.
However, the researchers warn that the study only shows a correlation, not a causal relationship. Other factors like motivation (动力) or self-discipline may also play a role. Dr. Hagerman also noted that while variety within healthy food groups like fruits and vegetables is beneficial, today’s food environment makes repetitive healthy eating a more practical strategy.
8. How did the researchers collect data about the participants’ diets?
A. By weighing food at the lab. B. By asking about their eating habits.
C. By checking exercise records. D. By having them use a food-tracking app.
9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Why people need routine eating patterns. B. What made the participants lose weight.
C. How varied diets influence body weight. D. How the researchers analyzed the data.
10. What contributes to better weight loss according to the study?
A. Keeping daily calorie intake steady. B. Exercising actively every day.
C. Eating more types of healthy foods. D. Tracking weight with wireless scales.
11. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Repetitive eating directly results in weight gain.
B. The findings may not apply to every individual.
C. A varied healthy diet is not practical in modern society.
D. Motivation is the key factor leading to more weight loss.

Drunk driving is one of the leading causes of road accidents around the world. It endangers not only the driver but also passengers, pedestrians, and cyclists. To help solve this serious problem, Mitsubishi Electric has created a new AI system that can detect (检测) when a driver is drunk. If necessary, the system can send warnings or even stop the car.
The system uses several methods to check the driver’s condition. First, small cameras are placed inside the car. These cameras can watch the driver’s face and eye movements to find signs of sleepiness. They are infrared cameras, which means they work well even at night. They can also pick up physical signs of drunkenness, such as a red face. Interestingly, the cameras can even notice small changes in the driver’s pulse (脉搏) rate by analyzing these signs. Besides using cameras, the system also collects data on how the car is being driven. For example, sudden braking (刹车), speeding up without reason, or sharp steering could all be signs that the driver is drunk.
To make sure the system works correctly, Mitsubishi Electric worked with Oakland University in the United States. They tested the system using drunk driving data collected under test conditions from 100 men and women. These people were of different ages, races, and skin colors. This helped the system learn to recognize drunk driving signs in different kinds of people. The company hopes to work with car makers to further improve this system. They hope it will be ready for use as early as next year.
The global impact of drunk driving is alarming. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 1.2 million people die and up to 50 million are injured in road accidents every year. Among these, 27% of road injuries are caused by drunk driving. A 2018 study also found that about 17% of deaths in road accidents are due to drunk driving.
Because of these shocking numbers, new laws are being considered in the US and Europe. These laws would require all new cars to have technology that can prevent drunk driving. Mitsubishi’s new AI system is an important step toward that goal.
12. What can infrared cameras do at night?
A. Help drivers see road signs. B. Check the driver’s condition.
C. Take clear colorful pictures. D. Protect cars from bad weather.
13. Why were 100 different people chosen to test the system?
A. To make it fit different users. B. To cut down the testing cost.
C. To speed up the system’s work. D. To collect more images of drivers.
14. What does the author want to show by mentioning the data in paragraph 4?
A. The work of the organization. B. Causes of car accidents.
C. The danger of drunk driving. D. Ways to improve traffic safety.
15. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To advise drivers to follow traffic rules.
B. To promote cars made by Mitsubishi Electric.
C. To discuss limitations of anti-drunk driving methods.
D. To introduce an AI system for drunk-driving prevention.

Jack is a 10-year-old boy with leg muscle development problems. He walks on his tiptoes and often loses balance. Besides, he has a speech delay, so he talks slowly and is sometimes hard to understand. Nevertheless, this little boy completely changed my view on life.
Three years ago, I was terribly self-centered and cared little about others. After school one day, my father asked me to watch a short video. In the video, I saw disabled children playing baseball. I learned about the Challenger program, which offers them baseball team chances with the help of volunteer buddies (伙伴). Buddies assist kids with vision, walking or mental problems and give them a sense of belonging they lack in life.
After watching the video, my dad, president of our town’s baseball league, decided to introduce this program and asked me to work as a volunteer buddy. I soon became interested in helping special-needs children.
On the first Sunday, I waited with other volunteers. Soon the players arrived. Then Jack came with his mother. My dad told shy Jack that I would be his buddy for the season. However, Jack hid behind his mom and looked upset.

【答案】8. D 9. D 10. A 11. B

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Apparently, Jack didn’t like to play with me. At first, I felt a little embarrassed and discouraged, wondering if I was wasting my time on a kid who showed no interest in me. However, I reminded myself that my duty was to help him and bring him joy. So I spared no effort to get along with Jack, patiently guiding him to play baseball and adapt to his physical conditions. Most importantly, I treated him sincerely and tried all ways to cheer him up.
To my great joy, my efforts paid off and Jack was beginning to accept me. As weeks went by, a unique and warm bond gradually formed between us. Sunday soon became Jack’s favorite day, for he could enjoy baseball games with me on the field. I also gained great happiness from his sincere smiles. It was Jack who made me realize the true meaning of life: devoting ourselves to helping and caring for others. This precious volunteer experience has become the most rewarding part of my life, which I always treasure.
