Nature speaks for itself, while art amplifies (充实) whatever nature has to say. Artist Luca Gnizio’s latest project, Forsoultree, speaks more than words could. The project started with the accidental discovery of a century-old Holm Oak tree trunk (树干) that had been brought down by nature in a park. When Gnizio was called in, he immediately thought of giving the dead trunk some life.
Over the past decade, Gnizio has made a name for himself, establishing a whole new form of art that harmonizes with nature. In his work, he focuses on three Rs: reduce, reuse and recycle. The Forsoultree takes on various aspects of his artistic approach. The aim of this project was not only to reuse but also to protect and give life. To Gnizio, what most people call waste can be repurposed to give more meaning to life.
He has managed to create new levels of beauty with the trunk, combining it with the natural environment and using it as the central point. Especially, it is the change of parts of the trunk into seats. He has created two unique seats with the trunk still in its primary location. All around the trunk itself are breathtaking views of the park for any lover of the natural space.
If you think sitting on a dead trunk will be boring, what about bathing? Gnizio has carved out a deep basin (盆) with sufficient resting space. An adult can lie on the floor of the basin looking upwards and enjoy the peaceful surrounding nature. Unfortunately, the basin is only for artistic purposes. You may not be able to bathe in it, but you will surely enjoy the views.
“Forsoultree speaks of beauty and respect and reminds us that nothing belongs to us on this earth, where we are simply passing guests,” explained Gnizio. His art offers an opportunity for us to learn more about our environment and also appreciate life as it is.
4. What can be learned about Forsoultree from paragraph 1?
A. It features a man-made landscape. B. It is inspired by a destroyed tree.
C. It involves an intentional discovery. D. It is designed to record ancient trees.
5. What do we know about Gnizio?
A. He is famous for nature paintings. B. He creates innovative eco-friendly art.
C. He believes waste should be sorted. D. He avoids signing names on his project.
6. Why does the author mention the unique seats and a deep basin?
A. To show the trunk’s functionality. B. To present the park’s beauty.
C. To indicate the value of location. D. To recommend sunbathing in the trunk.
7. What does the author stress in the last paragraph?
A. Art comes from life. B. The importance of human ownership.
C. Art creation promotes critical thinking. D. The recognition of respecting environment.

It seems that you can ask artificial intelligence (AI) things, and they’ll give you an answer. So, can they tell jokes? This question was raised when UK comedian Karen Hobbs performed in late June. Instead of the usual jokes she created, Hobbs delivered jokes written by ChatGPT. The process made her nervous.
Hobbs said that when she asked ChatGPT for a joke, what it provided was a man joking about being impatient with his shopping-addicted girlfriend. Even when she asked to change to the woman’s perspective (视角), the joke still featured a shopping-addicted girlfriend, just told from the first-person perspective.
It’s no surprise that many jokes come from a male perspective in online materials, as males dominate the field of comedy. The BBC commented that AI storytelling can only reproduce information that already exists in some form, although it can produce some never-before-seen combinations of ideas.
“One way that AI can tell jokes is to do what any 5-year-old does — repeat a successful joke they have heard or try to make an obvious variation of it,” said Les Carr, a professor of web science.
However, a good joke in real life can always adjust to the audience’s response, which often leads comedians to improvise (即兴创作). This, unfortunately, is beyond the current capabilities of AI. For example, in improvisation, there is no space for pre-arranged plans; the comedian must rely only on their inborn reaction to the audience.
“A well-done comedian can lead the audience through a funny story all the way to the last few words,” Michael Ryan, a student researching AI’s impact on comedy, explained to the BBC. “The whole time the comedian knew exactly where he or she was going with the joke and brought the audience there.”
However, this could all change. Research is already ongoing to give AI a greater understanding of the world around it, which makes the future of AI jokes still uncertain.
8. How does Hobbs feel about the jokes created by ChatGPT?
A. They are interesting. B. They are educational.
C. They are unsatisfying. D. They are entertaining.
9. What can be inferred according to this text?
A. Men are in control of the humor industry.
B. Females are much less humorous than males.
C. Many jokes come from a male perspective online.
D. AI provided a joke for Hobbs from the woman’s perspective.
10. What can artificial intelligence do with jokes?
A. Combine any never-before-seen idea. B. Adapt some existing jokes to a certain extent.
C. Rely on its inborn reactions to the audience. D. Improvise jokes according to the audience’s response.
11. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Can AI be really funny? B. The future of AI jokes.
C. What’s a truly great joke? D. The current capabilities of AI.

Sweden is so good at recycling that, for several years, it has imported (进口) rubbish from other countries so that its recycling plants can function smoothly. Less than 1 percent of Swedish household waste was sent to landfills (垃圾填埋场) last year or any since 2011.
We can only dream of such an effective system in the UK, which is new, but we end up paying expensive transport costs to send rubbish to be recycled overseas rather than paying fines to send it to landfills under the Landfill Tax of 1996.
Why are we sending waste to Sweden? Their system is so far ahead because of a culture of looking after the environment. Sweden was one of the first countries to place a heavy tax on fossil fuels (化石燃料) in 1991 and now sources almost half its electricity from renewables.
“In Sweden people are quite crazy about being out in nature and they have a clear idea of what needs to be done on nature and environmental problems. We worked on communications for a long time to make people not throw things outdoors so that we can recycle and use,” says Anria-Carin Gripwall, director of communications for Avfall Serve, the Swedish Waste Management’s recycling association.
Over time, Sweden has carried out a national recycling policy so that even though private companies undertake most of the business of importing and burning waste, the energy goes into a national heating network to heat homes through the cold Swedish winter. “That’s a key reason that we have this district network, so we can use the heating from the waste plants. In the southern part of Europe they don’t use the heating from the waste; it just goes out of the chimney. Here we use it as a replacement for fossil fuel,” M. Gripwall says.
12. Why has Sweden been importing rubbish from abroad in the past few years?
A. To try out its recycling system. B. To keep its recycling plants running.
C. To stop rubbish ending up in landfills. D. To make greater profits from rubbish.
13. Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “sources” in paragraph 3?
A. Consumes. B. Saves. C. Obtains. D. Improves.
14. How does Sweden handle the heating from the waste plants?
A. By making use of it to heat homes. B. By exchanging it for fossil fuels.
C. By selling it to other countries. D. By sending it out from the chimney.
15. What conclusion can be drawn from the text?
A. Swedish rarely get close to nature.
B. Swedish recycling system has been applied globally.
C. Waste is imported only by the Swedish government.
D. Swedish have a strong environmental awareness.

【答案】4. B 5. B 6. A 7. D

【答案】8. C 9. C 10. B 11. A

Over time Sweden has carried out a national recycling policy so that even though private companies undertake most of the business of importing and burning waste, the energy goes into a national heating network to heat homes through the cold Swedish winter.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. A 15. D
