Drama Club (after-school activity)
Friday, 24 October Sunny
I got up at 6:30 this morning and had a quick breakfast. Then I went to school on foot with my classmate Wang Tao, and we talked happily about the new day on the way. I went to bed early last night, so I was full of energy all day.

After school, I took part in the Drama Club. Our group will put on a play next month, and I am making a poster for it. When I got home, I cleaned up my desk, packed my schoolbag for Monday and wrote this diary about my daily life.

Once there was a man with four sons. He wanted his sons to learn not to judge a thing too quickly. So he asked them, one by one, to go and look at a pear tree far away. The first son went in winter, the second in spring, the third in summer, and the youngest in autumn.
When they all came home, the man asked them to tell what they had seen. The first son said the tree was ugly and dry. The second said it was green with new leaves and full of promise. The third said it was covered with flowers, the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. The last son said it was full of big, sweet fruit.
The sons could not agree. Each believed that only his own answer was true. The man told his sons that they were all right, because each of them saw only one season of the tree’s life. He said you cannot judge a tree, or a person, by one season alone. You can only know a life well when all its seasons are over.
If you give up in winter, you will miss the promise of spring, the beauty of summer and the fruit of autumn. Don’t let the pain of one season take away the joy of all the rest. Don’t judge life by one hard season — better days will come.

C. The Lesson of Four Seasons D. The Four Seasons of a Year
C
About 500 years ago, South American fishermen noticed something strange. Usually, the water along the coast is cool and full of fish. But around Christmas, the water sometimes becomes warm. So fishermen called this warm water “El Nino”. In Spanish it means “the Christ Child”.
What causes it? Normally, winds blow warm surface water from east to west, away from South America. Sometimes these winds become weak. Then the warm water flows (流动) back east, towards South America again. This changes where the rain falls.
The change brings trouble. Fish do not like warm water, so they swim away to cooler places, and the sea birds that eat them follow. In some places there is much more rain than usual, and floods destroy (摧毁) houses and roads. In other places, such as parts of Africa, there is almost no rain for months. Food crops die, and people may not have enough food.
We cannot stop El Nino — it is an event of nature. But we can still protect the earth by cutting air pollution. The most important job for scientists is to predict (预测) when El Nino will bring dangerous weather. Then people can prepare for storms, floods and droughts. Satellite pictures and new technology help a lot. Still, it is hard to say exactly when or where El Nino will cause damage.
21. What is “El Nino”?
A. A strong wind across the Pacific Ocean.
B. Warm water along the coast at Christmas.
C. A Spanish festival celebrated in December.
D. A fish that swims away from warm water.
22. According to Paragraph 2, why does “El Nino” happen?
A. Because weak winds let warm water flow back.
B. Because too much rain makes the water warm.
C. Because fishermen catch too many fish every year.
D. Because air pollution makes the earth warmer.
23. What trouble can El Nino bring to places like parts of Africa?
A. Too much rain and floods.
B. Strong winds and storms.
C. Little or no rain for months, causing crops to die.
D. Fish swimming toward the coast in large numbers.
24. What can we infer (推断) from the last paragraph?
A. El Nino will soon disappear from the earth.
B. Scientists still need to work harder to predict El Nino.
C. People can do nothing when El Nino brings dangerous weather.
D. Fish and sea birds will never come back to the warm water again.
25. What’s the structure of the passage?
A. ①—②—(③④) B. ①—②—③—④
C. ①—(②③)—④ D. ①—(②③④)

由下文“singing in public really troubled me a lot”可知,“我”并不想唱歌,但又不想让奶奶难过,didn’t want to upset her“不想让她难过”符合语境。
由下文Molly说“I feel nervous about singing in public too.”
由空后Emily的提议“How about the three of us singing together?”
由“we could not get it out of our heads”可知,这几天里他们反复练习这首歌,practise the song“练习歌曲”。
由下文“Molly’s legs were shaking. Emily’s hands were wet.”
but表转折:尽管Emily手心出汗,她仍然鼓励(encouraged)大家“We can become braver and stronger when we are together.”
一开始唱歌,紧张感就“消失”了,与下文“the song just seemed to sing itself”呼应。go away“消失”;build up“增强”,come back“回来”,show up“露面”均不符。
由“Some of the elderly even joined us.”
