Chen Ning Yang, a world-famous physicist and Nobel Prize winner, passed away in Beijing on October 18 at the age of 103. He made revolutionary contributions to our understanding of physics and particles(粒子).
Sub-heading 1:
Yang was born on September 22, 1922, in Hefei, China. He grew up near Tsinghua University, where his father was a mathematics professor. In 1946, Yang went to the University of Chicago for further study. He was attracted by its active research environment and the chance to learn from famous scientists like Enrico Fermi.
Fermi had a great influence on Yang. Yang told the New Yorker in 1962 that Fermi taught him "that physics should not be an expert's subject; physics is to be built from the ground up, brick by brick, layer by layer. We learned that abstractions(抽象概念)come after detailed foundation work, not before."
At Chicago, Yang first worked in an experimental lab. However, he soon realized he was not good at experimental work. "I was clumsy in the laboratory, and all my fellow graduate students laughed at me," Yang told the Simons Foundation in 2011, "but they liked me as a person, especially because I could solve theoretical(理论的)problems." This experience helped him decide to focus on theoretical physics.
Sub-heading 2:
Prof. Edward Teller encouraged Yang to turn one of his research ideas into a Ph.D. paper, which explored the concepts of symmetry(对称性). "That became one of the main themes, or perhaps the main theme of my later work," Yang said.
In 1954, Yang worked with Robert Mills to develop the "Yang-Mills theory". This theory is very important and is a key part of the Standard Model of particle physics.
Two years later, Yang collaborated with another University of Chicago alumnus, Tsung-Dao Lee. Together, they conducted groundbreaking research on the "parity laws", which challenged a fundamental belief related to the left-right symmetry in physics. This work was so significant that they were awarded the 1957 Nobel Prize in Physics.
Sub-heading 3:
Yang was a brilliant researcher who also made important contributions to other fields like statistical physics. Besides the Nobel Prize, he received many other honors, including the U.S. National Medal of Science.
Throughout his life, Yang remained deeply devoted to China. He worked hard to promote scientific and educational development in the country. He helped build academic exchanges between China and the U.S., and helped establish the Institute for Advanced Study at Tsinghua University. After returning to China from the United States in 2003, he nurtured(培养)young scholars at Tsinghua University. In 2015, he gave up his U.S. citizenship and restored his Chinese nationality.
26.Please add a proper sub-heading to each part.
① Love for China ② Building Physics Step by Step ③ Studying Symmetry
A. ①②③ B. ①③② C. ②①③ D. ②③①
27.What can we learn from Professor Fermi's words?
A. Physics is a subject only experts can study. B. It is much better to focus on big ideas first.
C. A deep and solid basis is of great importance. D. Working with partners can help us improve.
28.What lesson can we learn from Yang's experience in the laboratory?
A. We should try our best to stay away from things we are not good at.
B. Theoretical problems are more valuable than experimental work.
C. Recognizing our weaknesses can help us find our true strengths.
D. It is fun and interesting to make people laugh in the laboratory.

Some people think curiosity means asking endless questions. Others think curiosity is about discovering completely-new things. Believe it or not, we all have natural curiosity because it is not a special gift that only some people have. Sometimes the key to keeping it alive is by staying open to wonder.
Are you someone who loves to explore new places? Start by exploring your own neighborhood differently. Don't just walk the same path every day. Take a different street and look at things you never noticed before. You don't need to travel far to discover something new. Curiosity means seeing the familiar with fresh eyes.
Are you someone who enjoys reading stories? Try keeping a "wonder journal" where you write down questions that pop into your mind. When you read about ancient Egypt, you might wonder, "How did they build the pyramids without modern tools?" Writing down your questions is the first step. The next step is trying to find answers, but remember—sometimes, the search is more exciting than the answer itself.
Are you someone who likes making things? Curiosity and creativity work hand in hand. When you see something interesting, ask yourself, "How does this work?" Take apart an old toy to see its inside parts. Mix different colors to create a new shade. Each small experiment keeps your curiosity alive and teaches you something new.
Are you someone who feels comfortable asking "why"? Many people stop asking questions as they grow older because they worry others might think their questions are silly. But the most important discoveries in science came from people who weren't afraid to ask simple questions like "Why do apples fall down instead of up?" Every expert was once a beginner who asked basic questions.
By practicing curiosity in small ways every day, we keep our minds active and open. Curious people often find life more interesting because they see learning opportunities everywhere. The world becomes a more exciting place when we remember to ask "why," "how," and "what if".
31.What is the writer's opinion on curiosity?

33.Which of the following can help people stay curious?
A. Tom stops asking questions because his friends laugh at him.
B. David watches his favorite movie for the tenth time this month.
C. Lisa writes down interesting questions she thinks of and tries to find answers.
D. Amy always takes the same route to school without looking around.
34.What can we learn from the underlined sentence "the search is more exciting than the answer itself"?
A. We don't need to find answers to our questions.
B. The process of looking for answers is great fun.
C. Answers are always difficult and boring to get.
D. We should only care about the final answers.
35.Which of the following shows the structure of the passage? (P=paragraph)

Have you ever wondered why the letters on a keyboard are not arranged in alphabetical order? The layout(布局)we use every day, known as QWERTY, takes its name from the first six letters on the top left of the keyboard. 36
The story dates back to the late 19th century, when the first manual typewriter, whose keyboard resembled that of a piano, came into being. 37 However, it was soon discovered that as typing speeds increased, certain keys failed to return to their positions in time and thus jammed(卡住)frequently. 38 To address this problem, the QWERTY layout was developed, deliberately(故意地)placing the most frequently used letters far apart so that the keys were less likely to stick.
Yet the layout's survival was far from guaranteed. 39 With the arrival of computers, office typists were expected to operate the new machines, which meant retraining thousands of people on a large scale. 40 Designing keyboards based on the familiar typewriter layout proved far more economical, and the QWERTY arrangement has remained dominant ever since.
选项
A. But training so many people required time and money that companies were unwilling to spend.
B. In the 1940s, however, a new challenge arose that once again threatened to replace it.
C. Contrary to(相反)popular belief, these early machines did arrange the letters in ABC order.
D. Tracing the origins of this unusual arrangement requires a journey back more than a century.
E. Some typists became so frustrated that they often struck the keys hard enough to break the machine.
F. As a result, manufacturers decided to slow down the typing speed rather than improve the machines.

阅读以下短文,根据短文内容回答五个问题。要求所写答案语法正确、信息完整。
Drones: A Double-Edged Sword in the Sky
Have you ever seen a small flying machine with four rotors in the park? That's a drone! In the past, drones were only used by the army. But today, with the help of artificial intelligence (AI), they are changing our lives in many ways.
In agriculture, drones hover above fields and transmit(输送)detailed images to farmers' phones. By analyzing these images, AI can predict which plants will become sick even before any signs appear, allowing farmers to take action in advance. In emergency rescue, time means life. After an earthquake, drones rush into areas too dangerous for rescue workers and search for survivors through heat sensors. In Rwanda, a country in Africa, drones deliver blood to remote hospitals within minutes — something that once took hours by road.
Yet every coin has two sides. The same cameras that guide drones can also invade people's privacy if no rules are set. Besides, as drones share the sky with airplanes, a single mistake could lead to a serious accident. In 2018, a drone flew too close to a passenger plane near an airport in England. The airport had to close, and about 1,000 passengers could not take their flights on time. Some experts even warn that we should not let AI make all the decisions, for machines do not understand the value of human life.
Drones are neither angels nor devils. It is not the technology itself but how we use and regulate it that really matters. Perhaps the real question is not what drones can do, but what we should allow them to do.
46.How can AI help farmers even before plants show signs of illness?
47.Why do people in Africa use drones to deliver blood?
48.In the third paragraph, why does the writer mention the airplane in 2018?
49.According to the last paragraph, what does the writer think really matters about drones?
50.What does the underlined phrase "a double-edged sword" in the title probably mean?

Chopsticks are simple and helpful. Chopsticks have been a big part of Chinese food culture for a long time. Let's read and learn more about them.
The 56 (one)pair of chopsticks was invented over 5,000 years ago. It is said that Dayu, an ancient Chinese leader, invented them. At that time, there was a flood in China. Yu was very worried and wanted to control the flood. So he ate his meals as 57 (quick)as possible to save more time. But the meat in the pot was too hot to eat with his hands. Then he used two branches to help him hold the meat.
Most Chinese people today use wooden and bamboo chopsticks because they are cheap and convenient to carry around. In fact, the bamboo chopsticks are better than wooden ones because wood may take in some of the oil from the food. It will be 58 (health)if you don't clean it up. Chopsticks are a symbol of Chinese culture. More and more foreigners try to use chopsticks. However, they may have problems 59 (eat)food with only two sticks. Then people invented a creative eating tool: "chork". It has a fork(叉子)on one end and a pair of chopsticks on the 60 . When it breaks into two, it works as chopsticks. In this way, they can deal with the problem smartly.

For years,it has been said that newspapers are at death's door. Each of the past few years has
seen many newspapers say goodbye to their readers. But why is the situation so terrible for
newspapers?
Newspapers have a long history. The first newspaper was printed in 1 1600s.The industry
witnessed 2 most successful periods in the early 20th century.
With the appearance of radio and TV,however, newspaper circulation began to fall.By the mid
20th century, radio and TV had become so popular that people no longer had to rely on newspapers
for news. This was especially true for breaking news.
Afternoon newspapers were the first to suffer.People coming home from work increasingly
turned on the TV,rather than open a newspaper. But generally, newspapers still managed to survive..
3 they couldn't compete with TV in terms of delivering the latest news, they could provide in-
depth reports that TV news could not.
But newspapers suffered 4 heavier blow at the beginning of 1990.With the appearance of
the internet,5 information became free. Many newspaper readers realized that they could 6
read news online for free. There seemed to be little reason any longer for them 7 for a
newspaper subscription(订阅).
So what does the future hold? Will newspapers die, just like cassettes and typewriters?Maybe
not. Now,many newspapers 8.Some are going digital. Some are going even 9 by taking
the industry to places it has never been to.After all, people still want the news. And many agree that
newspapers are an important source of in-depth news and ideas. If newspapers were to entirely
disappear, there would be 10 to take their place.

and particles(粒子).
Sub-heading 1:
Yang was born on September 22,1922,in Hefei,China. He grew up near Tsinghua University,
where his father was a mathematics professor. In 1946,Yang went to the University of Chicago for
further study. He was attracted by its active research environment and the chance to learn from
famous scientists like Enrico Fermi.
Fermi had a great influence on Yang.Yang told the New Yorker in 1962 that Fermi taught him
"that physics should not be an expert's subject, physics is to be built from the ground up,brick by
bick, layer by layer. We learned that abstractions(抽象慨念)come after detailed foundation work
not before."
At Chicago,Yang first worked in an experimental lab. However,he soon realized he was not
good at experimental work."I was clumsy in the laboratory, and all my fellow graduate students
laughed at me,"Yang told the Simons Foundation in 2011,"but they liked me as a person, especially
because I could solve theoretical (problems. This experience helped him decide to focus
on theoretical physics.
Sub-heading 2:
Prof.Edward Teller encouraged Yang to turn one of his research ideas into a Ph.D.paper,
which explored the concepts of symmetry ()."That became one of the main themes,or
perhaps the main theme of my later work,"Yang said.
In 1954,Yang worked with Robert Mills to develop the "Yang-Mills theory".This theory is
very important and is a key part of the Standard Model of particle physics.
Two years later,Yang collaborated with another University of Chicago alumnus,Tsung-Dao
Lee.Together, they conducted groundbreaking research on the "parity laws",which challenged a
fundamental beliefrelated to the left-right symmetry in physics. This work was so significant that
they were awarded the 1957 Nobel Prize in Physics.
Sub-heading 3:
Yang was a brilliant researcher who also made important contributions to other fields like
statistical physics.Besides the Nobel Prize,he received many other honors, including the U.S.
National Medal of Science.
Throughout his life,Yang remained deeply devoted to China. He worked hard to promote
scientific and educational development in the country. He helped build academic exchanges between
China and the U.S.,and helped establish the Institute for Advanced Study at Tsinghua University.
After returning to China from the United States in 2003,he nurtured (young scholars at
Tsinghua University. In 2015,he gave up his U.S.citizenship and restored his Chinese nationality.

Drones:A Double-Edged Sword in the Sky
Have you ever seen a small flying machine with four rotors in the park? That's a drone! In the
past, drones were only used by the army. But today, with the help of artificial intelligence (AD,they
are changing our lives in many ways.
In agriculture, drones hover above fields and transmit (detailed images to farmers'
phones.By analyzing these images,AI can predict which plants will become sick even before any
signs appear, allowing farmers to take action in advance. In emergency rescue, time means life. After
an earthquake, drones rush into areas too dangerous for rescue workers and search for survivors
through heat sensors. In Rwanda,a country in Africa, drones deliver blood to remote hospitals within
minutes-something that once took hours by road.
Yet every coin has two sides. The same cameras that guide drones can also invade people's
privacy if no rules are set.Besides,as drones share the sky with airplanes,a single mistake could
lead to a serious accident. In 2018,a drone flew too close to a passenger plane near an airport in
England. The airport had to close, and about 1,000 passengers could not take their flights on time.
Some experts even warn that we should not let AI make all the decisions, for machines do not
understand the value of human life.
Drones are neither angels nor devils. It is not the technology itself but how we use and regulate
it that really matters.Perhaps the real question is not what drones can do,but what we should allow
them to do.
