① Leo got 300 yuan from his grandparents on his birthday. He spent 260 yuan on a pair of sports shoes which he wanted. “Why not wait a few days before deciding?” His mother asked. “Think about what you really need before spending money.” But Leo didn’t agree. He felt happy to get the shoes because he believed money was for buying things people wanted.
② Just one week later, his school held a charity sale. Students could bring books, toys and other things to sell. The money raised would go to help children in poor areas. Leo decided to take part.
③ He chose a storybook he had read many times and a model car he had not played with for months. Soon he hesitated. “The model car is my favourite. Should I really give it away?” he thought. Then he pictured the kids in poor areas. Many of them had few books or toys. He wondered whether these things he no longer used could bring them joy. In the end, he put both of them into his bag.
④ At the sale, the storybook and the model car sold quickly. A boy who bought the storybook told Leo he loved adventure stories. Leo watched him walk away with a big smile. Helping others was even more rewarding than he had imagined.
⑤ Later, Leo told his mother about the sale. He looked at his new sports shoes, but he no longer saw money simply as a way to get what he wanted. The sale showed him another way to use it — helping others with what he had. His mother smiled. “It sounds like you’ve learned something important.” Leo decided to manage money more wisely. Getting what he wanted made him happy, but giving what he had made him happier.
4. What’s the mother’s opinion about spending money?
A. Money is for buying things people want.
B. People should give their money to the charity.
C. People should spend money on what they need.
D. Money should be given to help poor children.

A. Creative. B. Touching. C. Meaningful. D. Hard-working.
7. What can Leo learn from this experience?
A. Money is a good friend to us all. B. Money is a good servant but a bad master.
C. A penny saved is a penny earned. D. Money brings us more joy when we share it.

① Wenzhou is an old city by the sea. People say it was a busy port (港口) a thousand years ago, but for a long time no one could prove it. In 2021, the Shuomen Ancient Port Site was found in Lucheng District. The news spread fast and drew many people’s attention. However, few people knew how it was discovered.
② Actually, the site was found by chance. Workers were building a road when their machines hit some old stone steps. Soon, archaeologists were called in to take over. They put in a great deal of effort and dug for months. Little by little, the city’s past came out of the ground. Later, the site was named one of the country’s top ten finds of the year.
③ The discovery at the site provides a missing piece of China’s ancient port history. Old records said that ships from far away often stopped here. Two towers on Jiangxin Island helped the ships find the way home. That was all we knew about the port until the site was found. From it, archaeologists dug out ten stone steps, three wooden ships and over 5,000 objects. Many of them were new to experts. In 2025, the new finds were added to middle school history books.
④ The discovery has also made the site serve the city in a new way. By 2026, a historical park has been built around the old stones by the government so that people can walk and learn history where it happened. So far, over 1.5 million people have visited it. Besides, experts are still studying the new finds. The mud on the ships may tell us how far they once sailed and how people travelled by sea long ago.
⑤ What people left behind still matters today. The site is more than old stones. It brings the past into everyday life and keeps the city’s story alive for the people in the future.
8. Who first found the Shuomen Ancient Port Site?
A. Park visitors. B. Road workers. C. Archaeologists. D. Experts on ships.
9. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 show?
A. The site makes the old port famous again. B. The site now plays a role in people’s lives.
C. The site shows how people lived long ago. D. The site still holds many secrets for experts.
10. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
11. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. New finds need much luck and take months of digging.
B. New finds take great effort and bring us many surprises.
C. The discovery shows the early port and changes our ideas.
D. The discovery proves the city’s past and gives it a new life.
D
① Shanya Gill, a 12-year-old girl from the US, has always been interested in science. She enjoys inventing things to solve everyday problems. Recently, her most impressive (印象深刻的) achievement is a small smart device (装置) called HeatWatch. It can find dangerous heat and warn people about a possible fire before it starts.
② Shanya got the idea after a serious event in her neighbourhood. A restaurant near her house caught fire, causing great damage. The fire spread quickly and thick smoke filled the air. Seeing the owner’s deep sadness, Shanya felt a strong sense of responsibility. She realised that traditional smoke alarms only ring when thick smoke appears, which is far too late. To protect her community, she decided to build a faster one.
③ However, Shanya faced many challenges. She bought a special heat-sensing camera and a small computer with her own pocket money. She learnt how to program them online for months. Sometimes, the codes (代码) didn’t work, but she never gave up. To reduce false alarms, she worked hard to tell a real fire apart from someone cooking. After failing many times, she finally succeeded.
④ It is such a tiny and light device that it can fit in a matchbox. It only costs about 50 dollars to make. You can just turn it on and it will start working. When it finds a dangerous heat source, it sounds an alarm first. If nobody takes action to stop it, the system will send a message to a mobile phone at once. In this way, it gives people enough time to check the condition.
⑤ Shanya’s hard work paid off. She won the 2023 Top Youth Science Award and received $25,000. Now, she hopes to make the device cheaper so that more families can use it. She also encourages other teenagers to follow their dreams. “Young people can be problem solvers today,” Shanya says. “With creativity and action, we can make a big difference.”
12. Why does the writer mention the restaurant fire in Paragraph 2?
A. To show the danger of fire. B. To introduce a famous restaurant.
C. To describe the owner’s sadness. D. To give reasons for Shanya’s action.
13. What problem did Shanya face during her research?
A. She had no money to buy tools. B. She couldn’t find a good camera.
C. She had trouble writing computer code. D. She didn’t get support from her parents.
14. According to Paragraph 4, what does the writer think of the device?
A. It is useful but heavy. B. It is expensive but smart.
C. It is small and beautiful. D. It is cheap and convenient.
15. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Dreamer of Science B. Smart Device, Easy Cooking
C. Young Wisdom against Fire D. Simple Design, Quick Learning
