For a long time,sixteen-year-old Luo Chen believed that being independent meant doing everything
alone. He liked solving his own problems and rarely asked anyone for advice. His view began to change
when he joined the sehool radio team.
During his first week,Luo was asked to prepare a five-minute programme about teenage life.He
wanted the programme to sound perfect,so he wrote the whole seript ()by himself. He also chose the
music and recorded every part alone.
On the day before the programme was to be played, the teacher listened to it.The information was
good, but the programme sounded flat. There were no different voices,no interviews and few real
examples.
·2026学年第一学期期中九年级英语学科学情调研卷2
"You have worked very hard,"the teacher said,"but a good radio programme is usually the result of
teamwork."Luo was disappointed. He had thought asking for help would show that he was not capable
enough. However,he decided to try a different way.He invited two classmates to join him.One
interviewed students about how they dealt with study pressure. The other chose music and helped edit the
recording.
The new programme was much livelier. It included several different opinions, and many students sent
messages to the radio team after hearing it.
That experience changed Luo's understanding of independence. He still believes teenagers should
learn to make decisions and solve problems by themselves. But he now knows that independence does not
mean refusing help."Sometimes,"he said,"being responsible means knowing what you can do alone and
when you should work with others."
Since then,Luo has become one of the most active members of the radio team.He often helps younger
students prepare their first programme. If they are worried about making mistakes,he tells them about his
own first recording.
For Luo,growing up is not about proving that you need nobody. It is about becoming strong enough to
make good choices-including the choice to cooperate.
19.What did Luo Chen think independence meant at first?
A.Making programmes for others.
B.Doing everything by himself.
C.Following his teacher's advice
D.Helping younger students.
20.Why was Luo's first programme not very successful?
A.It was too long.
B.The music was too loud.
C.The topic was not about teenagers.
D.It lacked different voices and real examples.
21.What does the word "flat"probably mean in Paragraph 4?
A.Not lively or interesting.
B.Easy to understand.
C.Very well organized.
D.Full of useful advice
22.What is the best title for the passage?
A.The Best School Radio Programme
B.A New Meaning of Independence
C.How to Become a Radio Host
D.Why Teenagers Need More Free Time

Leaf carving is an ancient form of folk art in China.Artists use natural fallen leaves to create
wonderful works. This art is special because artists follow the leaves'natural shapes and vein lines (
to work.
I first watched leaf carving in the studio of Chen Lining,a famous artist in Jiaozuo,Henan. He sat
quietly with a brush and a small knife, absorbed in a big leaf. The common fallen leaf seemed to get a new
life in his hands.
Chen Lining told us that making a leaf carving has simple steps:choosing leaves, carving,
polishing()and pressing.First, pick right leaves. The best leaves have clear veins,a wide surface and
even small holes. These natural marks are perfect for carving. After choosing leaves, wash them carefully
and put them in water to keep them soft.Dry leaves break easily,so this step is very important.
The hardest part is carving.Artists watch the natural vein lines closely and use a small knife to cut out
beautiful patterns (little by little. This work needs a steady (hand and a long-term focus. One
small mistake can break the whole leaf. When carving is finished, workers polish the leaf and press it flat.
Finally,a common fallen leaf turns into a wonderful art piece. With careful hands and good skills, they

make lovely and fantastic pafterns on thin leaves.
Leaf carving tells us that small and common fallen leaves can become special and beautiful artworks.
It is a perfect way to mix nature and art together. We just need creative ideas and love for nature.
23.Which question does the first paragraph answer?
A.What is leaf carving?

C.When did leaf carving first appear?
D.What tools do artists use for leaf carving?
24.How do artists carve a leaf?
A.They color the leaf with brushes first
B.They follow vein lines and cut patterns with a knife
C.They press the leaves flat before they cut the fallen leaves.
D.They choose dry leaves with large holes to make carving easier.
25.What can we infer from the passage?
A.It is easy to pick leaves for carving.
B.The leaf won't break while carving.
C.A lot of practice is needed for leaf carving.
D.Artists can finish a leaf carving in a few minutes.
26.What does the writer want to tell us by introducing the leaf carving?
A.We should study different kinds of leaves.
B.We should protect the art of leaf carving.
C.Making leaf carving is an easy and fun hobby.
D.Creativity and love for nature can create beautiful art.

When a small photo shop in Heping Street closed, its owner,Mr Gao,found several boxes that had not
been opened for years.Inside were hundreds of old photographs taken by his father between the 1970s and
the 1990s.Mr Gao had seen some of the pictures before, but he had never looked at the whole collection
carefully. There were photos of narrow streets, outdoor markets, school gates, bicycles and family
celebrations. Some places had completely disappeared, while others were still easy to recognize.
Instead of keeping the photographs at home,Mr Gao contacted a local community centre.Together,
they began a project called"Our Street in Time".
Volunteers first placed the photographs in order by date. They interviewed older residents (so
that they could recognize people and places in the pictures.Younger volunteers then visited the same
locations and took new photographs from similar positions.
The pairs of"then and now"pictures became the heart of the exhibition.
Visitors were especially interested in details that once seemed ordinary. One photograph showed
people waiting beside a public telephone.Another showed a small repair shop where three different
businesses now stood.
The exhibition did more than show physical changes. The interviews also recorded memories:where
children played, what foods families bought, and how neighbors helped one another.
Mr Gao said this was the part he valued most."Buildings change,"he explained,"but memories help
us understand what those places meant to people."
After the exhibition, the community centre created a digital collection so that the photographs and
recorded stories could be preserved together.Local students also began interviewing their own
grandparents.
The project proved that history does not always begin with a famous event.Sometimes it begins with a
photograph that someone was careful enough to keep.
