Tom was a quiet boy. He always stayed at home and read books, and he never tried anything new. One day, his head teacher announced that the school would hold a robot competition. Tom was really interested in robots, but he was afraid ___18___ speaking in front of others. His best friend Jack said, "Why not have ___19___ try? You are so good at building things."
After thinking for a whole night, Tom decided to join. He spent two weeks ___20___ his robot and testing it again and again. On the big day, his robot broke down in the first minute. He wanted to run off the stage, but he took a deep breath and fixed it in time. In the end, he ___21___ the third prize. From that day on, he became a different boy.
18. A A. of B. with C. for
原文:… he was afraid ___18___ speaking in front of others. | 解析:be afraid of doing sth. with 表示"和……一起",for 表目的,均不符合搭配。
19. A A. a B. an C. the
原文:Why not have ___19___ try?
20. C A. fix B. to fix C. fixing
原文:He spent two weeks ___20___ his robot and testing it again and again. | 解析:spend time (in) doing sth.
21. B A. wins B. won C. has won
原文:In the end, he ___21___ the third prize.
(B)

"When I was ___23___ age, I was as confused as you are," she said with a smile. "I once dreamed of being a pianist. Unluckily, I found I was not talented ___24___. Then I tried designing clothes, and finally I fell in love with hairdressing. You ___25___ be afraid of changing your mind. Try different things, and you will find your own way."
22. B A. and B. but C. so
原文:She was a hairdresser, ___22___ she was not an ordinary one — she had her own shop and worked on TV shows.
23. A A. your B. you C. yours
原文:When I was ___23___ age, I was as confused as you are.
24. A A. enough B. very C. quite
原文:Unluckily, I found I was not talented ___24___.
25. A A. needn't B. had better not C. can't
原文:You ___25___ be afraid of changing your mind. Try different things, and you will find your own way.
III. Choose the proper words in the boxes to complete the following passages. Each word can be used only once.(选择最恰当的选项填入空格。
(A)
A. courage
B. nervous
C. joined in
D. believed
E. successfully
When 14-year-old Leo signed up for the school 800-metre race, everyone was surprised. He was always the boy who hid at the back of the class and never ___26___ any sports meeting. "It is a real challenge for him," his PE teacher said.
On the race day, Leo felt ___27___. His hands were cold and his legs were weak. Standing at the starting line, he almost wanted to give up. But then he thought of his grandpa's words, "Have the ___28___ to try, and you have already won half the battle."
When the race ended, Leo was the last one to cross the line. But to everyone's surprise, he finished the whole course ___29___. All his classmates stood up and cheered loudly for him. That day, Leo learned something more important than a medal.
26. C(joined in) 27. B(nervous) 28. A(courage) 29. E(successfully) 多余项:D(believed)
26. 原文:… never ___26___ any sports meeting.
27. 原文:Leo felt ___27___. His hands were cold and his legs were weak.
28. 原文:Have the ___28___ to try, and you have already won half the battle. | 解析:the 后需名词,have the courage to do sth.
29. 原文:… he finished the whole course ___29___.
(B)
A. service
B. duty
C. career
D. practical
E. officer

30. E(officer) 31. B(duty) 32. D(practical) 33. A(service) 多余项:C(career)
30. 原文:He is a police ___30___ in a nearby station.
31. 原文:At 8 a.m., her father began his ___31___. He answered phone calls, directed traffic…
32. 原文:Book knowledge is important, but ___32___ skills are more important in my job.
33. 原文:… a policeman's job is a public ___33___. It is not always exciting, but it matters a lot to people.

Nina: You are right. And I need to plan well ahead.
Tom: Also, you (38)_______________________________!(用 need 建议对方不必爬得太快)

43. Ella: F (多余项:E)
39. Amy → D 原文:I want to make something with a partner. I'm free on Tuesday, but I cannot stay after 4:30.

41. Cindy → B 原文:I enjoy drawing, but speaking in front of people makes me nervous.
42. David → C 原文:My paper model keeps falling over. I want to find out what is wrong and improve it…
43. Ella → F 原文:I want to try an outdoor activity. I'm free on Friday, but I cannot bring any special equipment. No special equipment is needed",故选 F。
B. Choose the best answer.(根据以下内容,选择最恰当的答案)(共7分)
The Work Behind a School Lunch
Before our class visited the school kitchen, I thought a cook's job was mainly to make food taste good. Ms Lin, our school cook, showed us another side of her work.
At ten in the morning, she was already busy. Ms Lin checked a list beside the door. It showed how many meals each class needed. She also checked the names of students who could not eat certain foods. "A good lunch must reach the right person," she explained. "Taste is only part of the job."
Then we watched two workers prepare lunch boxes. One put meals into the boxes; the other checked the label(标签) before placing them on class carts. Ms Lin called this worker the last link in the lunch chain. "If this step goes wrong, careful work earlier may not be enough," she said.
That day, one class moved to a different room for a special lesson. Their monitor told the kitchen about the change. Ms Lin wrote the new room number on the class cart and asked a worker to check it. The meals arrived before the lesson ended.
At lunch, Ms Lin noticed that many students left carrots on their plates. She did not immediately remove carrots from the menu(菜单). The next day, she asked several students about the problem. Some said the pieces were too large and hard. She cut the carrots smaller and cooked them longer. Later that week, less carrot was left.
As we left, a student asked, "Do you feel proud when everyone says the food is delicious?" Ms Lin smiled. "Yes. But I also feel proud when everyone gets a suitable meal on time." I looked at the lunch carts again. They carried much more than food.
44. B Before visiting the kitchen, the writer thought a cook's job was to ________.
A. check the students' names. B. make food taste good.
C. carry lunch boxes to classes. D. make sure students eat carrots.
原文:Before our class visited the school kitchen, I thought a cook's job was mainly to make food taste good. | 解析:题干问"参观前"的看法,原文第一句直接给出"mainly to make food taste good"。
45. A The underlined word "link" in Paragraph 3 probably means ________.
A. a part of a chain. B. a special kind of food.
C. a student in the class. D. a box for carrying meals.
原文:Ms Lin called this worker the last link in the lunch chain. "If this step goes wrong, careful work earlier may not be enough."
46. D The underlined word "Their" in Paragraph 4 refers to ________.
A. The students'. B. The workers'. C. The kitchen's. D. One class's.
原文:That day, one class moved to a different room for a special lesson. Their monitor told the kitchen about the change.
47. B Ms Lin ________ when she found many students left carrots on their plates.
A. removed carrots from the menu at once.
B. asked the students about the reason.
C. told the students to eat all the food.
D. changed the menu to another vegetable.
原文:She did not immediately remove carrots from the menu. The next day, she asked several students about the problem. | 解析:原文明确"did not immediately remove",排除 A;紧接着"asked several students about the problem",即先了解原因,故选 B。
48. C What can we infer from the sentence "They carried much more than food." at the end?
A. The lunch carts were very heavy for the workers.
B. The lunch carts carried books and schoolbags, too.
C. The lunch carts showed the school's care for students.
D. The lunch carts carried more food than the students needed.
原文:Ms Lin… "I also feel proud when everyone gets a suitable meal on time."… They carried much more than food.
C. Choose the best answer and complete the passage.(选择最恰当的答案补全全文)(共7分)
Tips to make yourselves mentally stronger
Many people make New Year's plans, but few can keep them. According to a recent survey, some people aim to stay fit and healthy, while others want to lose weight. ___49___, only about 8% of people keep their goals while most people quit halfway. Here are ___50___ that will help you grow mentally (在精神上) stronger.
Spend at least 15 minutes a day in ___51___ thinking.
A few minutes of quiet time gives you a chance to think about your progress and what you want to do better tomorrow. Set aside a few minutes every day to recharge your batteries and give ___52___ energy.
Do at least one challenging thing every week.
Whether you choose to take a photography class or join a speech club, do something that forces you to step outside your comfort zone. Break your limits and face ___53___ bravely. Don't avoid hard things.
Become more aware of your feelings.
Your emotions play a huge role in every decision you make. Don't bottle up your feelings such as sadness or anger. It's important to express them and ___54___ them properly. Sharing how you feel can lead to better understanding and solutions. Become better connected to your feelings.
Give up one bad habit
Giving up bad habits that take away mental strength, like feeling sorry for yourself, will make your healthy habits work much better. Letting go of a bad habit can help you work smarter, not harder. So ___55___, saying you'll eat more vegetables, decide to stop eating that bag of chips at lunch every day.
49. B A. Besides B. However C. Therefore D. Otherwise
原文:… some people aim to stay fit and healthy, while others want to lose weight. ___49___, only about 8% of people keep their goals while most people quit halfway.
50. C A. problems B. reasons C. tips D. examples
原文:Here are ___50___ that will help you grow mentally stronger. Tips to make yourselves mentally stronger",故选 tips。
51. B A. active B. quiet C. quick D. hard
原文:Spend at least 15 minutes a day in ___51___ thinking. A few minutes of quiet time gives you a chance to think about your progress",说明是"安静地思考",选 quiet。
52. A A. yourself B. yourselves C. himself D. ourselves
原文:Set aside a few minutes every day to recharge your batteries and give ___52___ energy.
53. D A. success B. failure C. chances D. challenges
原文:Break your limits and face ___53___ bravely. Don't avoid hard things. Do at least one challenging thing"提示面对的是"挑战",challenges 与 face 搭配,选 D。
54. A A. manage B. hide C. create D. forget
原文:It's important to express them and ___54___ them properly.
55. C A. because of B. as for C. instead of D. thanks to
原文:So ___55___, saying you'll eat more vegetables, decide to stop eating that bag of chips at lunch every day.
D. Read the passage and complete the tasks.(根据短文内容完成任务)(第56-61题,每题2分,共16分)
One day, while his father was watching his son practice running in the playground, the boy fell down for the third time during his sprint(冲刺).
Son: (getting up, knee bleeding) Ouch...
Father: That's enough, son. You've fallen three times today. Maybe you're just not built for running. Let's go home.
Son: But Dad, the race is next week. I can't give up now.
Father: Look at you — your knee is bleeding, your shoes are worn out, and you still can't finish one lap without falling. Why don't you just drop out? I'll talk to your coach.
Son: (quietly) I don't want to drop out.
Following his father's words, the son quietly sat down on the bench to catch his breath. They drove home in silence, his father thinking that his son would finally listen to reason. But the next morning, when his father woke up, he found the boy's bed empty.
He looked out the window. Under the morning sun, the boy was running on the track again, alone. He ran one lap, then two. On the third lap, he stumbled but caught himself and kept going.
His father went outside and stood by the track. When the boy finished, he walked over, breathing heavily.
Father: Why are you out here so early? It's barely six o'clock.
Son: Dad, I fell yesterday because I was looking at my feet while running. I figured it out last night — I'll keep my eyes forward and relax my shoulders, so I won't trip.
Father: But why didn't you listen to me and quit?
Son: Because my PE teacher told us, "A strong mind is more important than strong legs." My body was tired, but my mind wasn't. I just needed to find the problem and fix it.
His father looked at his son's determined eyes and smiled. He realized that the boy had something far more valuable than speed — he had a strong mind that wouldn't break when things got hard.
Since then, his father has supported his son's decision and cheered him on.
Task 1 Answer the questions.
56. How many times did the boy fall down during his sprint while his father was watching?
Three times. / He fell down three times. 原文:the boy fell down for the third time during his sprint;父亲说"You've fallen three times today." 解析:问次数,用"基数词 + times"作答即可;"for the third time"是序数词,不能直接照抄。
57. What was wrong with the boy's knee after he fell down?
His knee was bleeding. / It was bleeding. 原文:(getting up, knee bleeding) Ouch…
58. Where was the boy when the father got up for a glass of water?
He was running on the track (in the playground). 原文:He looked out the window. Under the morning sun, the boy was running on the track again, alone.
59. According to the son, what did he figure out was the reason he fell during the day, and how did he plan to fix it?
He figured out that he fell because he was looking at his feet while running. He planned to keep his eyes forward and relax his shoulders. 原文:I fell yesterday because I was looking at my feet while running… I'll keep my eyes forward and relax my shoulders, so I won't trip.
60. What does the underlined sentence "A strong mind is more important than strong legs" mean in the story?
It means that a strong will matters more than physical ability. If you don't give up and keep trying, you can do better even when your body is tired. 原文:My body was tired, but my mind wasn't. I just needed to find the problem and fix it. … he had a strong mind that wouldn't break when things got hard.
Task 2
61. The story ends with "Since then, Father ________________." Please complete the sentence based on the story, and explain why you think so. (Answer in 2–3 sentences.)
Since then, Father has supported his son and encouraged him to keep running. Because he saw the boy's determined eyes and smiled, and he realized that his son had something far more valuable than speed — a strong mind. So he no longer asked him to give up. 原文:His father looked at his son's determined eyes and smiled. He realized that the boy had something far more valuable than speed — he had a strong mind that wouldn't break when things got hard.

Today I tried something new — I joined the school cooking club in the school kitchen. At first I could not even cut the vegetables well, and I burnt my first dish. I felt so upset that I wanted to give up. But my partner Lily helped me and told me to try again. We practised together and finally made a delicious soup. I have learnt that failure is part of learning. Next time I will not be afraid of trying new things.
