Our school held a science week last month. At the "Invention Hall", two exhibits stood side by side: the first telephone and a smart phone. The chart below shows the main differences between them.
The First Telephone (1876)
The Smart Phone (Today)
• Made of wood and metal
• Made of glass and metal
• Heavy — you needed two hands to hold it
• Light — it fits in a pocket
• One job: talking to a person far away
• Many jobs: calls, maps, photos, payment
• So expensive that few families had one
• Common in almost every family
• Fixed to a wall; it could not be moved
• Can be carried anywhere
1.Which of the following is TRUE about the first telephone?
A.It was made of glass and metal.
B.It was fixed to a wall.
C.It could be carried anywhere.
2.What does the chart show about the smart phone?
A.It can do more jobs and is easier to carry.
B.It is more expensive than the first telephone.
C.It can only be used at home.
3.What is the chart mainly about?
A.How the telephone has changed over time.
B.How to make a telephone at home.
C.Why people use phones every day.
B
In 1978, workers were building a factory in Hubei when they found something unusual under the ground. It was a large tomb (墓) more than 2,400 years old. Inside it, among gold and silver, they found a set of bronze bells
The bells are known as the Zenghouyi Chime Bells. There are 65 bells in all, and they hang on a wooden frame in three rows. The biggest one is about 1.5 metres tall and weighs over 200 kilos. The smallest is about the size of a hand.
What makes them special is their sound. Most bells in the world make only one note (音). But each Zenghouyi bell can make two — one on the front and one on the side. This means the whole set can play a wide range of music, from soft and slow to loud and fast.
The bells also carry more than 3,700 Chinese characters. They tell us about music in the Warring States period, and about the ideas of the people who made them. Before this discovery, few people believed that Chinese musicians of that time could already play such difficult music on bells.
Today the bells are kept in the Hubei Provincial Museum. Visitors can hear recordings of the music they once made — music which was silent for more than two thousand years.
For many Chinese people, the bells are not just old metal. They are a voice from the past, telling us how clever and how musical our ancestors (祖先) were.
4.When were the Zenghouyi Chime Bells found?
A.In 1978.
B.Over 2,400 years ago.
C.In the Warring States period.
5.What is special about each bell?
A.It is made of gold.
B.It can make two different notes.
C.It is the same size as a hand.
6.Why is this discovery important?
A.It shows that people of that time could already play difficult music.
B.It is the largest tomb ever found in China.
C.It was the first time that people saw bronze in China.
7.What does the writer compare the bells to in the last paragraph?
A.A voice from the past.
B.A modern concert.
C.A wooden frame.

About 400 kilometres above the Earth, a small "city" is moving around our planet at 28,000 kilometres an hour. It is Tiangong, China's space station.
Tiangong is made up of three main parts: the Tianhe core module (核心舱) and two lab modules, Wentian and Mengtian. Together they are about as big as a large flat. Spacecraft carrying astronauts and supplies (物资) also dock (对接) with it from time to time.
Life in Tiangong is very different. Water is not poured but squeezed (挤) from a bag. Food is fixed to the table so that it does not float away. Astronauts sleep in small bags tied to the wall. "At first I could not tell which way was up," one astronaut said.
The station is also a laboratory. More than 100 experiments have been done there. Astronauts have grown rice and vegetables, and they have given science lessons to students on Earth. Millions of children have watched these lessons and asked questions.
Tiangong is not only a home for Chinese astronauts. Scientists from other countries have been invited to work there. "Space belongs to all of us," a Chinese scientist said. "The more we share, the more we learn."
The station is planned to work for at least ten years. In that time, more discoveries will be made, and more young people will look up at the night sky and dream.
8.How fast does Tiangong travel?
A.400 kilometres an hour.
B.28,000 kilometres an hour.
C.3,700 kilometres an hour.
9.What do we learn about daily life in Tiangong?
A.Astronauts eat at a normal table.
B.Food must be fixed so that it does not float away.
C.Water is poured into cups as usual.
10.What have astronauts done on the station?
A.They have grown plants and given lessons.
B.They have built a new station.
C.They have travelled to the Moon.
11.What do the Chinese scientist's words suggest?
A.China will build more stations on its own.
B.Sharing in space helps everyone learn more.
C.Other countries should stop space research.
D
Many students think that sport takes time away from study. A new study suggests the opposite.
Researchers in Canada followed 800 students in Grade 9 for one school year. Half of them had a 30-minute run or ball game before their first class. The other half had a normal morning.
At the end of the year, the active group did better in tests of memory and attention. They also missed fewer school days. "Exercise sends more oxygen (氧气) to the brain," said Dr. Marie Laval. "It also helps students feel less worried before an exam."
But the study found something else, too. Students who played on a team improved more than those who exercised alone. The reason, according to the researchers, is that team sport teaches young people to wait, to share and to help — skills that are useful in class as well.
Not every school can give students 30 minutes before class. Still, there are simple ways to start: walk or cycle to school, take a short walk between two classes, or join a school team.
"A healthy body and a clear mind go together," Dr. Laval said. "Sport is not the enemy of study. It is part of it."
12.What did the active group do in the study?
A.They had extra maths lessons.
B.They exercised for 30 minutes before class.
C.They went to bed earlier every night.
13.What did the study find about the active group?
A.They did better in memory and attention tests.
B.They spent less time on homework.
C.They never felt worried before exams.
14.Why did team players improve more than students who exercised alone?
A.They exercised for a longer time.
B.Team sport teaches skills that also help in class.
C.They had better sports equipment.
15.What is Dr. Laval's opinion about sport and study?
A.Sport and study cannot both be done well.
B.Sport is part of a good study life.
C.Students should stop sport before exams.

In 1896, most people believed that human beings would never fly. Wilbur and Orville Wright, two brothers from Ohio, thought differently. 16
The brothers read every book and article about flight they could find. 17 They also spent hours watching birds and studied how their wings worked.
In 1900, they started testing gliders (滑翔机) at Kitty Hawk. 18 They built a kite first, and then a full-size glider. They learned by failing: a wing did not lift, a machine did not turn, so they went back and tried again.
On the morning of December 17, 1903, their plane, Flyer, lifted off the ground and flew for 12 seconds. 19 People around the world began to believe that flying was possible.
The brothers became famous, but they did not think of themselves as heroes. 20 They believed that "the secret of flying is not in the wings, but in the mind."
A.They made four flights that day, and the last one lasted almost a minute.
B.To them, success was simply the result of trying one more time.
C.They opened a factory and sold their planes to the government.
D.The wind there was strong, and the soft sand made landing safer.
E.But books alone were not enough.
F.They were sure that one day people would fly.

Every year, countries spend billions of dollars on space programmes. Some people ask: is it worth it? Why not use the money to build schools and hospitals?
It is a fair question. But the answer is not as simple as it looks.
First, space research has given us many things we use every day. Satellite navigation (导航) helps us find our way. Weather satellites warn us before a storm arrives. Some of the machines in hospitals were first built for space travel. When we look for ways to live in space, we also find better ways to live on Earth.
Second, space brings people together. A space station is not built by one person but by thousands of people from many countries. When astronauts from different countries work side by side, they show us that human beings can do great things when they cooperate.
Third, looking up at the stars changes the way we think. From space, the Earth has no borders (边界). It is just one small, blue and beautiful planet. Many astronauts say that this view made them care more about our home.
Of course, space programmes should be honest about their cost, and money should never be taken away from children's education or from the poor. But we do not have to choose between the stars and the ground. A country can build a good school and a good space programme at the same time.
In the end, exploring space is not about leaving the Earth. It is about understanding it better — and understanding ourselves.
41.What question do some people ask about space programmes?
42.What daily things have come from space research? (List at least two.)
43.Why does the writer say that space "brings people together"?
44.What should space programmes be careful about?
45.Do you think your school should spend money on space activities? Why or why not?

Dear Chris,
I'm glad to hear that you are interested in Chinese festivals. My favourite one is the Dragon Boat Festival, which falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month.
On that day, families get together and make zongzi — rice wrapped in bamboo leaves. Many towns hold dragon boat races, and people shout and cheer along the river.
I like this festival because it is full of life, and because it reminds us of Qu Yuan, a poet who loved his country deeply. When I eat zongzi with my family, I feel I am part of a long story.
I hope you can come and enjoy it with us one day.
Yours,
Li Hua

Fixed to a wall; it could not be moved"(固定在墙上、不能移动)与 B 项完全对应。
2.A 【考点】图表信息归纳 【解析】智能手机一栏列出"Many jobs: calls, maps, photos, payment"和"Light — it fits in a pocket",即功能更多、更便于携带,故选 A。B 项与"Common in almost every family"矛盾;C 项与"Can be carried anywhere"矛盾。
In 1978, workers were building a factory in Hubei when they found something unusual under the ground.",出土时间为 1978 年。
5.B 【考点】细节理解 【解析】第三段"each Zenghouyi bell can make two — one on the front and one on the side",每只钟的正、侧两面各发一个音,故选 B。A 项材料为青铜(bronze),gold and silver 只是墓中陪葬品;C 项只有最小的钟"about the size of a hand"。
Before this discovery, few people believed that Chinese musicians of that time could already play such difficult music on bells.",说明该发现改变了人们的认识,证明当时的乐师已能演奏难度很高的音乐,故选 A。
They are a voice from the past, telling us how clever and how musical our ancestors were.",作者把编钟比作"来自过去的声音",故选 A。
8.B 【考点】细节理解 【解析】第一段"moving around our planet at 28,000 kilometres an hour",速度为每小时 28 000 千米。
Food is fixed to the table so that it does not float away.",故选 B。 Water is not poured but squeezed from a bag"相反。
Astronauts have grown rice and vegetables, and they have given science lessons to students on Earth.",故选 A。
Space belongs to all of us... The more we share, the more we learn.",强调共享使所有人受益,故选 B。
Half of them had a 30-minute run or ball game before their first class.",实验组在第一节课前运动 30 分钟,故选 B。
The active group did better in tests of memory and attention.",故选 A。
The reason... is that team sport teaches young people to wait, to share and to help — skills that are useful in class as well.",故选 B。
Sport is not the enemy of study. It is part of it.",运动是学习生活的一部分,故选 B。
They were sure that one day people would fly."(他们坚信人类终将飞上天空)正好承接"想法不同",并引出后文的行动。
They also spent hours watching birds",由"读书"转向"观察",需要一句承上启下:"But books alone were not enough."(但仅有书本还不够)。
They made four flights that day, and the last one lasted almost a minute."
20.B 【解析】空前"they did not think of themselves as heroes",空后"the secret of flying is not in the wings, but in the mind",B 项"To them, success was simply the result of trying one more time."
Nobody spoke. Then I heard my own voice",班里最慢的人突然报名,同学的反应应是"惊讶"(in surprise),故选 B。anger(愤怒)、silence(沉默)均不合语境。
22.A 【解析】"heart was beating fast"说明紧张,站在起跑线上手应是"发抖的"(shaking),故选 A。
23.C 【解析】"one runner after another passed me",交棒时我们已落到"最后"(last),故选 C。
Well done! You did not !",是对"没有放弃"的肯定,give up 符合语境;come back(回来)、run away(跑开)均不合。
25.C 【解析】"Our team did not win.",所以心情是"失望的"(disappointed),故选 C。
27.A 【解析】"I began to every morning. I am still not fast."
I will the best I can"为固定表达 try one's best(尽最大努力),故选 try。
29.A 【解析】" I finish first or last"与句末 or 构成 whether... or...(无论……
That... is what sport really ."
31.is held 【考点】一般现在时被动语态 【解析】every October 表示经常性动作,主语 It(Culture Week)与 hold 是被动关系,故用 is held。
32.was performed 【考点】一般过去时被动语态 【解析】last month 表示过去,music show 与 perform 是被动关系,主语单数,故 was performed。
Both the boys and the girls 作主语,谓语用复数;全段叙述上个月的活动,用一般过去时,故 were。
36.supposed 【考点】固定搭配 be supposed to do 【解析】be supposed to do 意为"应该做某事",故填 supposed。
37.was set 【考点】一般过去时被动语态 【解析】A "Festival Street" 与 set up 是被动关系,活动发生在过去,主语单数,故 was set。
39.will be invited 【考点】一般将来时被动语态 【解析】Next year 表示将来,more countries 与 invite 是被动关系,故 will be invited。
41.They ask whether it is worth spending so much money on space programmes. Some people ask: is it worth it? Why not use the money to build schools and hospitals?"。
42.Satellite navigation, weather satellites and some machines in hospitals. 【
43.Because a space station is built by thousands of people from many countries, and astronauts from different countries work side by side.
44.They should be honest about their cost and should not take money away from education or from the poor. 【
45.Yes, I think so. Because space activities can make us interested in science and help us dream bigger.(言之有理即可) 【解析】开放性试题:先明确表态,再给 1—2 条理由(激发科学兴趣、开阔视野、培养合作精神等),观点与理由须一致、语句正确;只表态不说明理由不得满分。
【亮点句式】…, which falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month.(非限制性定语从句);It reminds us of Qu Yuan, a poet who loved his country deeply.(同位语+定语从句);Families get together and make zongzi — rice wrapped in bamboo leaves.(破折号解释);Not only do we watch the races, but we also feel part of a long story.(倒装+not only... but also...)。
