Years ago I worked at a factory in a small county. Every day I got up very early and often did much extra work at night. I was so tired and exhausted. My whole life was hopeless. Then one day I read the following article from a magazine.
A woman went to live with her husband in a camp in the Mojave Desert during the war. She simply hated the place. The heat was almost unbearable, even under a big tree. The wind blew all the time, and there was sand everywhere, Finally, in desperation she wrote her parents in Ohio that she couldn’t stand it another minute and was coming home.
Quickly came the reply by airmail from her father—just two lines:

The daughter did some real thinking, not only with the mind but also with her heart. She decided to hold on to her place.
She made friends with the local people, learned to love the country, and eventually wrote a book about it.
The desert hadn’t changed, but her attitude (态度) had. Because she listened with her heart to the words her father sent, a whole new world opened up to her.

It depends.
Maybe you have just left messages too often without much valuable information. For example, the questions are those like “how are you?”, “what are you doing?” too often. You know, people may feel bored after answering such kinds of questions time after time.
Another possible reason may be that you’ve sent something unpleasant to your friend or in your friend circle. I just blocked one of my middle school classmates yesterday because she was trying to sell fake goods in the friend circle, and I hate it quite much.
Some people don’t like a certain person’s friend circle so they no longer want to see it and they don’t want to see their “Moments” on WeChat. Maybe they publish very private pictures or thoughts they don’t want to share with him or her.
So why you are blocked may depend on his or her mood or preference (喜好), and the reasons a person gets blocked are various from person to person. So I advise you to write an email or make a phone call to that person if he or she really means a lot to you to see why he or she is dissatisfied with you, and to find out how you can make up for the case.

C. Ask another friend for the reason. D. Communicate to find out the reason.
11. What does the writer probably think?
A. If someone blocks you, it must be because they hate you.
B. How you talk and what you share can influence your friendship.
C. It is OK to sell fake things to friends in your friend circle.

If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started learning a language?
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages leads to changes in grey matter (脑灰质). This is the area of the brain that processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.
The study also found the effect is greater the younger people learn a second language. A team led by Dr Andrea Michelle, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learned a second language before the age of five, and also with some later learners.
Scans showed that grey matter density (密度) was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference was.
“Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists. This means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.
Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales has researched the link between bilingualism and math skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible (灵活的),” he said. “You are actually going beyond (超出) just language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”
A study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and thirty-four found similar results. Their reading, writing and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you open a door to another world,” explained the scientists.
12. If people learn other languages, what will be changed?
A. White matter. B. Grey matter. C. Exercise. D. Muscles.
13. What does the underlined word“bilinguals” mean in the passage?
A. People who love doing exercise. B. People who study brain science.
C. People who speak two languages. D. People who are good at learning.
14. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?
A. Learning languages can make you smarter.
B. Learning a new language can change your brain.
C. Starting to learn young gives a better result.
D. People who speak two languages have less grey matter.
15. What does the writer want to tell us in the last two paragraphs?
A. To suggest that Italian is the best language to learn.
B. To show that language learning is similar to learning math.
C. To say that learning a language early helps you in more ways.
D. To tell people the best age for learning a new language.

五、阅读表达(共5小题, 每小题2分, 满分10分)
阅读下面短文, 回答短文后面的各个小题。
Being Polite in Different Cultures
When you talk to people from different countries, you might find that ideas about politeness can vary. What is considered polite in one culture might be normal or even impolite in another.
For example, in many English-speaking countries, people often use “please” , “thank you”, and “sorry”. Making a request without “please” can sound too direct. Also, saying “thank you” to a bus driver when getting off the bus is a common practice.
However, in some other cultures, saying “thank you” too much, especially among close friends or family, might feel strange. It could make the other person think you are trying to create distance. Instead, people might show their thanks through actions or kind words, not just the words “thank you” themselves.
Another difference is about saying “no”. In places like the United States, people might say “I’m not sure or That might be difficult” to say no politely. But in Germany or the Netherlands, people can be more direct. A direct “no” is not always considered rude there; it is often seen as being clear and honest.
Understanding these differences is very important for good communication across cultures. The best way is to watch how local people act and try to learn from them.
