So she worked on and solved it.
Sidor Clare
Sidor won the $10,000 Marconi/Samueli Award for Innovation, an honor made by Samueli’s generous donation of his 2012 Marconi Society Prize Award. She developed bricks that could one day be made on Mars, so that humans wouldn’t be required to carry building materials with them in order to build there.
Alexis MacAvoy
Alexis won the $10,000 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Award for Health Advancement, which recognized the student whose work and performance showed the most promise in health-related fields and demonstrated an understanding of the many social factors that affect health. She designed a water filter (过滤器) by using carbon to remove heavy metals from water.
Rachel Bergey
Rachel won the $10,000 Lemelson Award for Invention, awarded by The Lemelson Foundation to a young inventor creating promising solutions to real-world problems. She developed a trap made of tinfoil (锡纸) and netting for the spotted lanternfly, an invasive species causing damage to trees.

In a small coastal community in Ecuador known as La Isla, I was handing out clothes and toys to children standing in a long line in their schoolyard. They had gathered there that morning, likely wearing the only clothes they owned. They were quiet and polite, eyes bright with excitement. Watching this, my mind flashed back to a day I would never forget.
I was five years old that Christmas Eve in 1988, growing up in Ecuador, with my parents and elder sister. My father came into my bedroom and gave me a plastic cowboy. I’d never owned a real toy of any kind. My family didn’t have much. My mom stayed home, caring for my sister and me. My dad drove a food delivery truck and was on the road for days at a time.
“I hope you like your toy,” my father said, kneeling down and holding me close. I felt the warmth of his body, as if in giving me this toy he was also giving me a part of himself. Even at age five, I knew that had been a gift.
By sixth grade our family moved to the US, and life got easier.I excelled in high school. Every good grade was a thank‑you to my parents for all they’d done for me. I went on to college, and after graduation, with my degree in hand, I became a pharmacist (药剂师). I was finally able to buy nice gifts for my family, but I could never give in equal measure the love I’d felt from that unexpected gift I'd received as a little boy. I wished every child could know that feeling.
Two years into my career, I made my first trip to La Isla. Two years later, I returned with my nonprofit organization called Toys for Ecuador. My parents, sister and I traveled to towns across rural Ecuador with Christmas presents for children and gift baskets for seniors.
It was a journey that not only fulfilled a childhood wish to share that special feeling of love and generosity, but also reaffirmed (重申) my commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.

6. How did the author repay his parents?
A. By setting up a nonprofit organization.
B. By buying them some unexpected gifts.
C. By improving his academic achievements.
D. By satisfying their wish to make him a pharmacist.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Plastic Cowboy Inspired Toys for Ecuador
B. Toys for Ecuador Gave Children Christmas Gifts
C. Father's Gift Pushed a Boy to Succeed Academically
D. Father's Love Never Left Boyhood Memories Behind
D 5. B 6. C 7. A

C
Mentally replaying a memory can be helpful for recalling key details, such as picturing the moment you last arrived home to remember where you put your keys. This ability is what psychologists call “mental time travel”. Episodic memory, which is a form of long-term memory for events, is an example of mental time travel. While scientists once thought it was unique to humans, evidence of such memory has been found in animals, such as great apes and mice. Scientists have recently found birds called Eurasian Jays can do it, too.
Eurasian Jays have excellent memory: they stash foods such as nuts and larvae (幼虫) for future consumption, so remembering the place, contents and time is crucial for their survival. They also have complex mental abilities such as object permanence and spatial memory. This made researchers curious to know whether Eurasian Jays might revisit memories like we do.
In the experiment, seven birds watched experimenters place food beneath one cup in a line of identical cups. They were rewarded for later picking the correct cup. This training was repeated multiple times so that the birds could remember the correct cup’s position.
Then the birds were given a different memory assessment in which they saw food placed beneath one of several cups with differently colored shapes or patterns. Ten minutes later, they were brought back to these non-identical cups in a different order. If the bird only remembered what it was trained to recall, it would have been fooled by this switch-up. “But instead, the birds were largely able to access visual details that they hadn’t known they would need,” says James Davies, the lead author of the study. The jays correctly chose the cup with the food 70% of the time based on those visual features. This experiment was a powerful indicator of something like episodic memory because the jays didn’t know colors and patterns would be important when they first saw them.
Next, the researchers hope to get a clearer picture of the jays’ memory abilities by testing their limits. Human episodic memory is quite flexible — it can apply to situations that don’t have to do with food or survival — so the researchers suggest exploring whether Eurasian Jays’ memory abilities are sharp in non-food-related situations as well.
8. What is a feature of “mental time travel”?
A. It benefits temporary memory. B. It’s different from episodic memory.
C. It’s common in the animal kingdom. D. It enables mental scene reconstruction.
9. What does the underlined word “stash” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Digest. B. Share. C. Store. D. Consume.
10. What can be inferred from two experiments about Eurasian Jays?
A. They show flexible memory beyond training. B. They are a good master of color and patterns.
C. They choose correctly based on initial memory. D. They rely on their spatial memory to find food.
11. What do researchers want to explore in future studies?
A. Jays’ specific food preferences. B. Jay’s survival skills in the wild.
C. Jays’ social behavior and memory. D. Jays’ memory ability in non-food contexts.
D 9. C 10. A 11. D

根据第一段“Mentally replaying a memory can be helpful for recalling key details, such as picturing the moment you last arrived home to remember where you put your keys. This ability is what psychologists call “mental time travel”. Episodic memory, which is a form of long-term memory for events, is an example of mental time travel.(在脑海中回放一段记忆对回忆关键细节很有帮助,比如想象你最后一次回家的那一刻,记住你把钥匙放在哪里了。
根据倒数第二段““But instead, the birds were largely able to access visual details that they hadn’t known they would need,” says James Davies, the lead author of the study. The jays correctly chose the cup with the food 70% of the time based on those visual features. This experiment was a powerful indicator of something like episodic memory because the jays didn’t know colors and patterns would be important when they first saw them.(该研究的主要作者詹姆斯·戴维斯说:“相反,鸟类在很大程度上能够获得它们不知道自己需要的视觉细节。”根据这些视觉特征,有70%的情况下,松鸦正确地选择了盛有食物的杯子。这个实验是一个类似情景记忆的强有力的指标,因为松鸦在第一次看到它们时并不知道颜色和图案会很重要)”可知,欧亚松鸦表现出超出训练的灵活记忆。故选A。
根据最后一段“Next, the researchers hope to get a clearer picture of the jays’ memory abilities by testing their limits. Human episodic memory is quite flexible — it can apply to situations that don’t have to do with food or survival — so the researchers suggest exploring whether Eurasian Jays’ memory abilities are sharp in non-food-related situations as well.(接下来,研究人员希望通过测试它们的极限来更清楚地了解松鸦的记忆能力。人类的情景记忆是相当灵活的——它可以适用于与食物或生存无关的情况——所以研究人员建议探索欧亚松鸦的记忆能力是否在与食物无关的情况下也很敏锐)”可知,在未来的研究中,研究人员想要探索欧亚松鸦在非食物情境下的记忆能力。故选D。
D
A parasocial relationship (PSR)is generally defined as a relationship in which one member of the relationship isn’t aware of the other — for example, a fan loves a celebrity, but the celebrity doesn’t know they exist.
The term “parasocial relationships” first appeared in the 1950s, when psychologists tried to understand how television viewers reacted to TV personalities speaking to them directly out of the screen. Later in the 70s and 80s, scholars began to assume that forming parasocial relationships was driven by loneliness. However, not-lonely people are just as likely to form a connection with that person on the screen. As fandoms(粉丝圈)became more visible throughout the latter half of the 20th century, parasocial relationships became associated with youth and immaturity.
It’s true that adolescents particularly tend to develop intense parasocial relationships because it can be a chance to practice real adult feelings on someone at a safe distance. But digital interaction complicates these natural relationships. Since the rise of social media, the phenomenon of parasocial relationships has been hugely amplified(放大). The traditional arrangement of PSRs, where the fan has no actual contact with a celebrity, is visibly changed by our new means of communication — a celebrity might see a fan’s message or even reply.
When fans are gaining access to the celebrity through social media posts, it increases the feeling of closeness. People think they really have more of a relationship than they do. Online fandoms, especially large ones full of adolescents with strong emotions can generate bad behavior among adults. Behavior that might have been limited to one person or a few people might be, thanks to social media, given the chance to spread. “There’s a sort of echo chamber effect(回声室效应)where people convince themselves, ‘everyone agrees with me and therefore we are all right in our approach,’” says Gayle Stever, the author of Parasocial Experiences.
Parasocial relationships are natural and not inherently (固有地)unhealthy. But as Stever says, “Anything that can be true about a regular social relationship can be true about a parasocialrel ationship.”
12. Which aspect of parasocial relationships does paragraph 2 talk about?
A. Their features. B. Their development.
C. Their forms. D. Their influence.
13. How has social media changed parasocial relationships?
A. Most online users are adolescents.
B. Fans can meet celebrities in person.
C. PSRs become more common among fans.
D. Fans can interact with celebrities online.
14. Why does Stever mention the echo chamber effect in her book?
A. To explain how behavior spreads in online fandoms.
B. To prove that fans are easily persuaded by others.
C. To illustrate the reasons why fans’ actions are right.
D. To stress the fact that Stever’s book is important.
15. What is the writer’s attitude towards parasocial relationships?
A. Approving. B. Negative. C. Unclear. D. Objective.
B 13. D 14. A 15. D

根据第二段第一句“The term ‘parasocial relationships’ first appeared in the 1950s, when psychologists tried to understand how television viewers reacted to TV personalities speaking to them directly out of the screen.(拟社会关系一词最早出现在20世纪50年代,当时心理学家试图了解电视观众是如何对电视人物直接从屏幕上与他们交谈做出反应的。)”可知,第二段首先讲述拟社会关系的起源,然后从文中“Later in the 70s and 80s, scholars began to assume that forming parasocial relationships was driven by loneliness. However, not-lonely people are just as likely to form a connection with that person on the screen. As fandoms(粉丝圈)became more visible throughout the latter half of the 20th century, parasocial relationships became associated with youth and immaturity.(在70年代和80年代后期,学者们开始认为形成反社会关系是由孤独驱使的。然而,不孤独的人同样有可能在屏幕上与那个人建立联系。随着粉丝圈在20世纪后半叶变得更加明显,拟社会关系与年轻和不成熟联系在一起。)”可知,接着讲述其随时间的推移而发展的情况。由此可知,第二段主要讲拟社会关系的发展。故选B项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Since the rise of social media, the phenomenon of parasocial relationships has been hugely amplified(放大).The traditional arrangement of PSRs, where the fan has no actual contact with a celebrity, is visibly changed by our new means of communication—a celebrity might see a fan’s message or even reply.(自从社交媒体兴起以来,超社会关系现象被极大地放大了。传统的拟社会关系,即粉丝与名人没有实际接触,由于我们新的沟通方式而发生了明显的变化——名人可能会看到粉丝的信息,甚至回复。)”可知,社交媒体改变了拟社会关系,粉丝可以在线与名人互动。故选D项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“When fans are gaining access to the celebrity through social media posts, it increases the feeling of closeness. People think they really have more of a relationship than they do. Online fandoms, especially large ones full of adolescents with strong emotions can generate bad behavior among adults. Behavior that might have been limited to one person or a few people might be, thanks to social media, given the chance to spread.(当粉丝通过社交媒体帖子接触到这位名人时,会增加亲密感。人们认为他们真的有比他们更多的关系。网络粉丝,尤其是那些充满强烈情绪的青少年的大型粉丝群,会在成年人中产生不良行为。由于社交媒体,可能仅限于一个人或几个人的行为可能会有机会传播。)”可知,这部分内容提到了社交媒体使粉丝行为传播地更快,另外根据本段最后一句“‘There’s a sort of echo chamber effect where people convince themselves, ‘everyone agrees with me and therefore we are all right in our approach,’ says Gayle Stever, the author of Parasocial Experiences.(拟社会经历一书的作者盖尔·斯特弗说:“有一种回声室效应,人们说服自己,‘每个人都同意我的看法,所以我们的方法是正确的。’)”可知,斯特弗在书中提到回声室效应是为了解释在线粉丝群体中行为是如何传播的。故选A项。
根据最后一段“Parasocial relationships are natural and not inherently unhealthy. But as Stever says, ‘Anything that can be true about a regular social relationship can be true about a parasocial relationship.’(拟社会关系是自然的,并非天生不健康。但正如Stever所说,“任何关于常规社会关系的事实都可能是关于拟社会关系的。”)”可知,作者对拟社会关系持客观态度,认为其并不固有地不健康,但也要认识到其可能带来的问题。故选D项。

【答案】One possible version
The popularity of pre-made dishes is on the rise, mainly due to the fast pace of modern life. They offer great convenience, saving people valuable time on shopping and cooking. From my perspective, this trend is a double-edged sword.
On one hand, it makes life easier for many busy families. On the other hand, we can’t ignore the concerns about nutrition and food safety. Therefore, I suggest that producers should be more transparent about ingredients, and that we as consumers should maintain a balanced diet, not over-relying on such products.
All in all, while pre-made dishes bring undeniable convenience, a mindful approach is essential to ensure they serve as an alternative rather than a daily food.

Every day after school, Lucas and Noah pressed their noses against Mr. Henderson’s shop window. They stared at the red bicycle that stood proudly in the center of the display. For months, they had saved every spare coin, yet the price still seemed far beyond their reach.
When the first snow of winter covered their town, the brothers saw an opportunity. They grabbed their shovels (铲子), determined to turn the snowfall into savings through hard work.
They started in their own neighborhood. But many residents had already cleared their walkways, and those who hadn’t only offered a few coins for short paths. After several tiring hours, they had earned just seven dollars — far less than they hoped.
Refusing to give up, they headed to Maple Street, where the houses were bigger and the driveways deeper in snow. Noah knocked on the door of a beautiful Victorian house. Mrs. Williams answered, looking like she was in a hurry. When Noah asked if she needed her driveway shoveled, she agreed at once. She took a twenty-dollar bill from her purse and placed it into Noah’s hand.
“I have to rush out,” she said with an encouraging smile. “I’ll leave it in your capable hands.”
The boys stared at the bill, amazed. Twenty dollars — more than they had made the entire day! Laughing in disbelief, they set to work with fresh energy. The initial excitement carried them through the first hour of work. But as the afternoon darkened and the temperature dropped, the work became harder. Their hands grew numb (麻木), their muscles ached, and the long driveway seemed endless.
Halfway through, Lucas threw down his shovel in frustration (沮丧). “Let’s just go. She’ll never know we didn’t finish.”
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;

Noah’s aching hands seemed to agree with his brother’s words. For a moment, he stood frozen, torn between exhaustion and responsibility. Walking away meant warmth and rest, yet Mrs. Williams’ trusting smile appeared in his mind, reminding him of the confidence she had placed in them. He held the shovel tightly, bent down, and continued clearing the snow. Lucas watched him quietly and soon joined him without hesitation. Side by side, they worked through the bitter cold. In the fading light, the driveway slowly took shape under their steady effort.
As they cleared the final shovel of snow, Mrs. Williams’ car returned. She looked at the perfectly shoveled driveway with pleasant surprise and expressed genuine appreciation, saying that she had known they would keep their promise. A quiet warmth spread inside the boys. On the way home, Noah touched the twenty-dollar bill in his pocket. Their dream of the red bicycle felt a little closer, yet he realized that what they earned that day was far more valuable than money. The lesson about honesty would stay with them long after the snow melted.

B
4. What reminded the author of his childhood story?
A. The Christmas celebration.
B. The children’s happy school life.
C. The preparation of Christmas gifts.
D. The scene of children’s receiving gifts.
5. Which words can best describe the author’s father?
A. Grateful and generous.
B. Hard‑working and caring.
C. Outgoing and romantic.
D. Ambitious and passionate.
6. How did the author repay his parents?
A. By setting up a nonprofit organization.
B. By buying them some unexpected gifts.
C. By improving his academic achievements.
D. By satisfying their wish to make him a pharmacist.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Plastic Cowboy Inspired Toys for Ecuador
B. Toys for Ecuador Gave Children Christmas Gifts
C. Father's Gift Pushed a Boy to Succeed Academically
D. Father's Love Never Left Boyhood Memories Behind

A. Approving. B. Negative. C. Unclear. D. Objective.
