What would you do if you encountered a homeless person on the street? Most people, caught in the rush of daily life, would look away, walk faster, or hold their bags tightly. Some might drop a few coins into a cup, but rarely stop to talk or even make eye contact. Brian Peterson used to be one of them.
One evening, Peterson was completely lost in a book, feeling as if the words were speaking directly to his heart, when the loud and familiar singing from the street outside broke the silence. In the past, he would have closed the window, ignoring it. But tonight, motivated by the book’s message of love and connection, he gathered his courage, went outside and started a conversation. He learned that the man’s name was Matt Faris, a musician from Kentucky who came to California to chase his dream, yet ended up living on the street for a decade.
Inspired by Faris’ story, Peterson, an art school graduate, offered to paint his portrait. This small gesture gave birth to Faces of Santa Ana, a nonprofit organization devoted to painting portraits of unhoused individuals. Using vivid colors, Peterson aimed to capture not just their outward appearance, but their unique personalities, emotions, and untold life stories.
As public interest in the portraits grew, Peterson, the founder of the organization, began selling the large, signed paintings for thousands of dollars. Half of the profits were placed into a love account for each subject, enabling them to improve their situations. Some used the funds for food or medical care, while Faris used his to record an album and continue the musical career.
Over eight years, the project expanded. What began with a simple conversation has grown into Faces of Mankind, a nationwide collective of artists. It turns out that true kindness can turn invisible souls into visible hope.

A. Warm Bonds: Love Around Us B. Joint Efforts Lead to Success
C. Fortune Rises and Falls in Life D. Painters’ Tips for Creative Works

A. By offering financial support. B. By teaching them painting skills.
C. By recording albums for them. D. By raising money from the public.

A. Artists can change society easily.
B. Small kindness can create powerful hope.
C. The poor should fight for their own dreams.
D. Books may completely change one’s life attitude.

Albert Einstein owed his brilliant mind to having a child-like sense of humour. Indeed, many studies link humour and intelligence. Researchers in Austria discovered that funny people, particularly those who enjoy dark humour, have higher IQs than their less funny fellows. They argue that it takes both cognitive (认知) and emotional ability to process and produce humour. Their analysis shows that funny people have higher intelligence, and they score lower in mood disturbance and aggressiveness.
In psychology, we use the term “positive humour style” to refer to people who use humour to enhance relationships and reduce conflict. This type of humour is associated with relationship satisfaction, extroversion (外向性) and high self-respect. Having a humorous outlook on life also helps people better manage stress and challenges.
Funny people amuse others and laugh more themselves. Such laughter causes brain changes, which may explain the humour-intelligence connection. Neuropsychological studies have found that experiencing positive emotional states, such as joy, fun and happiness, increases the production of dopamine (多巴胺) in the brain. Dopamine not only makes us feel great, it also opens up the learning centres of the brain, which enables and sustains more neural connections. As a result, we become more flexible and creative in our thinking, and better at solving problems. It also boosts our working memory.
Evidence suggests that humour actually bolster feelings of confidence, competence and status, making funny people very influential. Humour gets people to listen, helps communicate messages and aids learning. Many leaders use it to enhance group work and organisational culture. Studies of positive organisations suggest the more fun we have at work, the more productive we are, and the less likely we are to suffer burn-out.
Educational research also supports that humour is an effective aid to learning. Studies have demonstrated that lessons that are delivered with humour are more enjoyable for students, and also enhance students’ comprehension and recall of the topic.
28. What do Austrian researchers find?
A. Humorous people are always sensitive.
B. Funny people usually own sharper minds.
C. Dark humour is most popular among people.
D. People lacking humour tend to be aggressive.
29. What effect does dopamine have on our brain?
A. It weakens our ability to remember information.
B. It stops people from experiencing happy feelings.
C. It improves our ways to think and solve problems.
D. It helps produce more neural connections in the brain.
30. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “bolster”?
A. Clarify. B. Unite. C. Strengthen. D. Distribute.
31. What is the advantage of humorous lessons for students?
A. They encourage students to find fun in life.
B. They help students form good learning habits.
C. They offer students more after-school activities.
D. They improve students’ understanding and memory.
D
Modern urban living exposes people to increasing artificial light at night known as light pollution. While bright streetlights and building lights make cities safer and more convenient, scientists have found that constant nighttime light can greatly affect all living things.
According to the latest data, the area covered by artificial light on the Earth’s surface grows by nearly 2.5% every year, and over 80% of the world’s population now lives in light pollution — a figure that rises to 99% in Europe and North America.
Yet people’s awareness remains surprisingly low. For humans, irregular artificial light breaks the body’s natural biological clock, which adjusts itself according to the sunrise and sunset. Darkness at night signals the body to produce melatonin, a key chemical inside the human body that improves sleep quality. When bright light breaks this process, people may suffer from sleeplessness, daytime tiredness and poor concentration. Long-term exposure also raises risks of metabolic disorders and mood problems. Worse still, many can’t link sleep problems to unnecessary nighttime lighting nearby.
The impacts of artificial light go far beyond humans. Many species rely on natural light cycles to guide migration (迁徙), breeding and feeding. Migratory birds often mistake bright city lights for starlight, losing their way and causing crashes with buildings. Sea turtles face similar trouble: newly born turtles depend on moonlight to find the ocean, yet bright coastal lights make them move inland, causing high death rates. Even insects, the base of many food chains, are attracted to artificial lights largely, wearing themselves out and reducing food sources for birds and other animals.
Combined efforts from cities and individuals can reduce harm from light pollution and benefit both humans and wildlife. Cities can use warm, weak streetlights and turn off unnecessary decorative lights at night. People can also help with soft bedroom lights and avoiding screen use before bedtime. Small joint efforts can effectively reduce light pollution and protect both humans and nature.
32. What do the numbers in paragraph 2 show?
A. The seriousness of light pollution.
B. The benefits of urban artificial light.
C. The world’s most brightly lit regions.
D. People’s growing awareness of light pollution.
33. Why does the author mention melatonin in paragraph 3?
A. To introduce a way to treat sleeplessness.
B. To explain why humans need enough sleep.
C. To compare human bodies with animal ones.
D. To show how light pollution affects human bodies.
34. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. Common risks faced by wild animals in cities.
B. Different living habits of various wild species.
C. The importance of natural light for food chains.
D. The influences of light pollution on wild animals.
35. What may the author agree with regarding artificial light?
A. It makes the night sky much darker.
B. Its advantages outweigh disadvantages.
C. It sometimes offers protection to wildlife.
D. Combined efforts can reduce its harmful effects.

The saying “laughter is the best medicine” has been around for centuries, but only in recent decades has science begun to explain the reasons behind laughter’s magical effect.
Laughter begins in the brain as a result of humor, surprise, or the joy of human connection. 36 This makes laughter a full-brain activity of emotion and movement.
37 These chemicals provide a sense of reward and pleasure, reduce physical discomfort and create a sense of delight, and deepen feelings of trust and connection with people around you.
Laughter also sets your body into “rest and digest” mode. In this process, the stressful fight-or-flight response is limited. Your muscles are loosened, and your breath is deepened.
38
Beyond being an expression of humor, laughter benefits your body and mind in many ways.
Laughter reduces stress. Modern life is full of things that stress you out: deadlines, academic worries, social pressure, etc. 39 Heart health is another area where laughter works its magic. When you laugh, blood vessels expand, reducing blood pressure. One study showed that watching a comedy increased blood flow in participants by 22%. The conclusion is clear: joy helps the heart. Over time, regular laughter may reduce the risk of heart attacks.
If laughter is medicine, then the solution is simple: make space for joy. This may involve spending more time with friends who make you laugh, watching comedies instead of endless newsfeeds, or practicing laughter yoga to release tension. 40 So the next time you feel like laughing, laugh out loud! Your body and mind will thank you.
A. Yet heavy stress makes it hard for us to keep peaceful.
B. That explains why laughter brings you a sense of ease.
C. Laughter triggers chemicals to create positive feelings inside us.
D. That comes from the humour contained in comedies and cartoons.
E. Amusing memories and humorous tales can also bring us benefits.
F. But a short period of laughing can aid us in recovering from pressure.
G. As we laugh, different areas of our brain get activated at the same time.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Every summer, the couple, Ella and Ken, stayed in a charming countryside cottage with their two sons Jim and Dick, aged seven and eleven.
The two brothers maintained a harmonious relationship, unlike many siblings who often fell out over trivial matters. They shared every little detail of their school life, as well as their favourite toys and books. Yet one task always caused disagreement — house cleaning. On a bright Saturday morning, Mom called out from the kitchen, “Jim! Dick! Time to tidy up your room!” Deep sighs echoed throughout the house. Tidying their bedroom ranked as the last thing they desired to do.
Jim and Dick stepped into their disordered room, wearing gloomy expressions. Toys lay scattered across the floor; clothes piled high on chairs and beds, and books were left untidily on the shelves.
Mom entered the room and gasped at the mess, “Oh my goodness! How did it get into such a state? We should sort it out together.”
Jim and Dick exchanged a glance. Obviously, they were reluctant to undertake this tiring task. Soon afterwards, they argued with one another over when and how they should carry out the cleaning work.
Noticing that the kids were unwilling, Mom explained, “A tidy room creates a pleasant atmosphere and makes daily life more organized. Learning to arrange our belongings and keep things neat is a vital life skill.” The boys fell silent, seemingly lost in reflection.
Their father overheard their conversation and came over to offer help. A brilliant idea flashed through his mind. He said, “I know cleaning sounds tedious. What if we turn it into a thrilling competition? As you sort out the room, the one who uncovers the most fascinating item may decide our dessert this evening.” Burning with enthusiasm, the boys agreed to their father’s suggestion.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Curious about what they would find, they each quickly took action. __________________________________

应用文写作参考范文:
Dear Robert,
Delighted to know you’re going to launch an English short video presentation in our class, I’m writing to put forward my suggestion.
I strongly recommend school life as the theme. Since it is something we are familiar with, we can shoot videos effortlessly. Meanwhile, it enables us to record our precious moments on campus and share our experiences.
I’m willing to take charge of collecting videos from classmates. Being well-organized, I promise I can finish the task properly.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,

读后续写参考范文:
Curious about what they would find, they each quickly took action. Jim began to gather scattered toys and put them into the box, while Dick folded the messy clothes and arranged the books on the shelves. At first, they raced against each other quietly, eager to win the competition. But soon they noticed it went faster if they passed things to one another. They stopped focusing only on winning and kept cleaning side by side.
Their room gradually became less messy. Piles on the chairs disappeared, the floor was cleared, and the shelves looked neat and orderly. Mom and Dad watched them with satisfaction. Though they did not find any surprising special item, the boys finished the cleaning task nicely. Dad told them both deserved the dessert. The two brothers laughed, realizing that working together made housework much easier than arguing.

M: We can take the train. It will be faster. I’ll book the tickets tomorrow afternoon.

【原文】M: As a young child, I always enjoyed physical challenges more than mental ones. I liked to run and build swings. At that stage, I hadn’t yet learned to climb or swim, but I would have loved to try those two. One day, we had a physical education class at school. We did the long jump and handstands, but it was when I tried to do a forward roll, the disaster struck. Somehow, I twisted my neck in an extremely painful way. I screamed loudly, and the teachers were very concerned. An ambulance was called, and I was taken to a hospital. The doctors fitted me with a collar, and I was told to avoid exercise and stay away from school for eight weeks. At first, I was very bored. Having to keep still all day was no fun. So I started to read. I looked at books on the shelf at home. I wasn’t interested in love stories. I avoided those, but crime and adventure did appeal to me. During those eight weeks, I developed a lifelong love of reading. When my collar was removed, the doctors told me not to exercise for another four weeks. Instead of being disappointed, I was happy to devote more time to my new love — reading.
