Failure isn’t the end, unless you let it be. Don’t believe me? Here are four people who lived through failure before going on to become names known around the world.

The man who blessed us with the sweet milk chocolate treat we all love wasn’t a hit the first time around. He once worked for a local candy factory. One fateful night, he ran into an old friend who was a children’s literature editor. The friend agreed to publish Geisel’s work. Better known today as Dr. Seuss, Geisel was never again called a failure after his first book became a hit.

At a summer camp in a Southern California suburb, the grandmas were in charge. Every week, they taught a group of 8-to-14-year- olds life skills like how to cook and sew (缝制). “Loneliness is something that seniors are challenged with, and they love having younger people around them,” said Zainab Hussain, a program manager at Olive Community Services, a nonprofit that hosted the camp to bring teens and elderly adults together.
In the camp, a small room was filled with energy as the kids chatted and chewed on snacks. Some grandmas were around and watched, content to just be around the youngsters.
Haqiqah Abdul Rahim, one of the grandmas serving as the instructor for sewing, said many kids don’t learn these skills at school, so they’re filling in a gap. She stood in front of the room at the start of the activity, holding up various tools and explaining what they were. Rahim also didn’t get to spend a lot of time with her grandchildren because they didn’t live close. “It is heartwarming to be able to interact with those who love being around you,” Rahim said.
The summer camp was held in partnership with the Golden Connections Club, started by14-year-old high school student Leena Albinali. She lived with her grandma but realized other students didn't have the same opportunity to spend as much time with their grandparents. She also learned about ageism (年龄歧视) and other challenges faced by senior adults in one of her classes.
“They treat us like we’re their grandchildren,” Albinali said.“ We share what we know about artificial intelligence and its impact on our lives, and the elders share their life stories and advice. One of the most important things they’ve shared with me is to live in the moment, something that’s taken on new meaning for me — The people we have right now are not going to be with us forever.”
4. What is the purpose of the summer camp?
A. To teach kids life skills. B. To help seniors fight loneliness.
C. To connect generations. D. To educate kids to respect seniors.
5. How does Rahim find her job of teaching sewing in the camp?
A. It makes up for the lessons at school.
B. It offers career options to kids in future.
C. It inspires kids’ interest in her profession.
D. It reminds her to contact her grandchildren.
6. What inspired Albinali to set up Golden Connections Club?
A. Her school’s support. B. Her own experience.
C. Seniors’ common voice. D. Ageism her grandma got.
7. What message does Albinali want to convey in the last paragraph?
A. The shared challenges facing generations.
B. The curiosity of seniors about technology.
C. The wisdom of the seniors’ life experience.
D. The enriching exchange across generations.

When handball was introduced to Sri Lankan schools in 2010, I wanted to bring it to my school, St Anthony’s, in the remote village of Wasalakotte in central Sri Lanka. Handball is a fascinating game which combines speed, strength, technical precision, skill and teamwork. As a new sport, I saw the potential in it as a golden opportunity for our school as we had never earned a place in traditional sports.
The boys were immediately interested and 40 students signed up to play. Training started early in the morning before class and continued after school until it was dark. After three months of tireless training we were able to compete at the all-island school handball tournament.
Our boys played remarkably well and reached the semifinals. And that was when the real game started. Students, parents, and teachers from Colombo schools joined forces against us, saying they wouldn’t allow the cup to be taken out of Colombo. They considered it a shame to lose a match against boys from a rural village school, who couldn’t even speak English due to lack of staff and opportunities. Some Colombo students wore leaves and danced and sang Vedda songs to laugh at our boys. Even the referees (裁判) favoured the Colombo schools, resulting in our team being robbed of the victory they deserved.
A few weeks after the defeat, I met the national handball coach to discuss our treatment by the referees. He apologized and offered to send a Korean professional handball coach to our school. Coach Vonho arrived as promised and turned our handball team from good to great in just two weeks.
The following year, nobody could stop our team from winning the all-island schools handball championship. Our team of 14 boys played so well that teachers from other schools advised their players to watch our matches. And I was greatly honored to have shown the boys that dreams can be fulfilled.
8. Why did the author introduce handball to his school?
A. To replace traditional sports. B. To achieve sports recognition.
C. To follow a new national policy. D. To develop students’ athletic potential.
9. What can be learned about the boys from paragraph 3?
A. They deserved to lose the game. B. They lacked opportunities to practice.
C. They considered it a shame to lose the match. D. They suffered prejudice and unfair treatment.
10. Which of the following best describes the author?
A. Professional. B. Strict. C. Determined. D. Grateful.
11. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Respect Without Reason B. Pride After Prejudice
C. Colombo: The protector of Tradition D. Vonho: The Builder of Champions
D
Over the last seven years, most states have banned texting by drivers, and public service campaigns have tried a wide range of methods to persuade people to put down their phones when they are behind the wheel.
Yet the problem, by just about any measure, appears to be getting worse. Americans are still texting while driving, as well as using social networks and taking photos. Road accidents, which had fallen for years, are now rising sharply.
That is partly because people are driving more, but Mark Rosekind, the chief of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, said distracted(分心)driving was "only increasing, unfortunately."
"Big change requires big ideas." he said in a speech last month, referring broadly to the need to improve road safety. So to try to change a distinctly modern behavior, lawmakers and public health experts are reaching back to an old approach: They want to treat distracted driving like drunk driving.
An idea from lawmakers in New York is to give police officers a new device called the Textalyzer. It would work like this: An officer arriving at the scene of a crash could ask for the phones of the drivers and use the Textalyzer to check in the operating system for recent activity. The technology could determine whether a driver had just texted, emailed or done anything else that is not allowed under New York's hands-free driving laws.
"We need something on the books that can change people's behavior,” said Félix W. Ortiz, who pushed for the state's 2001 ban on hand-held devices by drivers. If the Textalyzer bill becomes law, he said, "people are going to be more afraid to put their hands on the cell phone."
12. Which of the following best describes the ban on drivers' texting in the US?
A. Ineffective. B. Unnecessary.
C. Inconsistent. D. Unfair.
13. What can the Textalyzer help a police officer find out?
A. Where a driver came from. B. Whether a driver used their phone.
C. How fast a driver was going. D. When a driver arrived at the scene.
14. What does the underlined word "something" in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Advice. B. Data. C. Tests. D. Laws.
15. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. To Drive or Not to Drive? Think Before You Start
B. Texting and Driving? Watch Out for the Textalyzer
C. New York Banning Hand-Held Devices by Drivers.
D. The Next Generation Cell Phone: The Textalyzer.

Arthur was a good boy doing his best to grow into a good man. Arthur’s best friend was Kyle. If you couldn’t find Arthur, all you had to do was look for Kyle.
A few years ago, Arthur’s father was a successful businessman. But things went very wrong when his dad’s business failed. The two boys met when Arthur had to leave his expensive private school, which his family could no longer afford, and go to a public school. Arthur’s mom worked at the local bakery (面包烘房) and brought home boxes of baked goods. Just like Arthur’s, Kyle’s family struggled. They lived on a farm where they could not work any longer because Kyle’s dad was too sick, and his grandmother was too old. Kyle’s mom worked in the laundry (洗衣店) and still managed to grow vegetables for the family. The two families helped each other. Arthur gave Kyle’s family the extra delicious baked goods, and Kyle’s mom gave him baskets of carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, and fruit from the farm.
Things took a turn for the worse when Kyle’s 84-year-old grandmother was seriously ill and had to go to the hospital. Kyle and his family were understandably upset, but worse of all were the hospital bills. Fortunately, she survived.
One afternoon, Arthur found poor Kyle in tears. “What’s the matter, Kyle?” he asked. His friend wiped his tears. “Nothing, nothing at all!” he said. Arthur had his doubts, but he didn’t press Kyle. “Well, then,” he said. “I have good news for you! My Aunt sent me $50, and my mom said I could spend it on anything I wanted!”
“WOW! Does that mean, ...”
Arthur smiled. “YES!” he shouted. “That means I’m buying the robot!” “When are you going to buy it?” “Maybe this weekend,” Arthur said. “Now, how about you tell me what’s wrong?”
“Grandma is turning eighty-five next week, and I wanted to get her a new album (相册) for the old family photos. She loves paging through it, remembering and telling stories. I asked my dad, but he said it was too expensive.” Arthur didn’t say a word. He sat down next to his friend and ...

A. They deserved to lose the game. B. They lacked opportunities to practice.
C. They considered it a shame to lose the match. D. They suffered prejudice and unfair treatment.
10. Which of the following best describes the author?
A. Professional. B. Strict. C. Determined. D. Grateful.

【答案】12. A 13. B 14. D 15. B
根据第一段中“Over the last seven years, most states have banned texting by drivers, and public service campaigns have tried a wide range of methods to persuade people to put down their phones when they are behind the wheel.”(在过去的七年里,大多数州都禁止司机发短信,公共服务活动也尝试了各种各样的方法来说服人们在开车时放下手机。)以及第二段中“Yet the problem, by just about any measure, appears to be getting worse.”(然而,无论以何种标准衡量,这个问题似乎都在恶化。)可知,大多数州使用了各种各样的方法说服司机们在开车的时候放下手机,可是情况却越来越糟糕。所以各种方法是无效的。A选项ineffective意为“无效的”,与此相符。故选A。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“The technology could determine whether a driver had just texted, emailed or done anything else that is not allowed under New York's hands-free driving laws.”(这项技术可以确定司机是否发了短信、发了邮件,或者做了纽约免提驾驶法不允许的其他事情。)可知,Textalyzer能够确定的是司机是否使用了手机发短信、邮件以及其他驾驶法不允许的行为。B 选项意为“是否司机使用了手机。”与此相符,故选B。
【14题详解】
词义猜测题。根据句中的“We need something on the books that can change people's behavior.”(我们需要一些能改变人们行为的东西,)可知,something是能够改变人们的行为的事情。根据下文的“If the Textalyzer bill becomes law, he said, "people are going to be more afraid to put their hands on the cell phone.”(他说,如果Textalyzer法案成为法律,“人们会更害怕拿起手机。)可知,人们的行为会改变的条件是当Textalyzer法案成为法律。受到法律的约束和惩罚,司机们才不会在开车的时候使用手机。故something指代的是法律。故选D。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。纵观全文,第一段和第二段阐述的是“虽然大多数州已经尝试了各种各样的方法来说服人们在开车时放下手机。可是问题却越来越严重”。第三段中“That is partly because people are driving more.”(部分原因是开车的人越来越多)可知,解释了该行为产生的部分原因。 Texting and Driving? Watch Out for the Textalyzer(发短信还是在开车?防范短信监控器。)适合文章的标题。故选B。

【答案】One possible version:
That night, Arthur asked his mom to join his secret plan. And she happily agreed. On Kyle’s grandmother’s birthday, Arthur and his mom knocked on Kyle’s door. Arthur was carrying a big present-wrapped box and some beautiful flowers, and his mom had a HUGE beautiful birthday cake! When Kyle and his family saw them, they couldn’t believe their eyes! “Kyle,” Arthur said. “Quick, ask your grandma to blow out the candles and open the present box!” When the grandmother walked out of her room with difficulty, she was amazed!
The grandmother opened the present. It was a beautiful photo album with the grandmother’s name on the cover. Kyle knew then that Arthur had spent every cent of the money his aunt had sent him on his grandmother’s gift. The grandmother started crying. “Thank you, Arthur and Kyle, how did you know this is what I wanted most?” Kyle started hugging his grandmother and thanked Arthur, saying, “you did really want that robot!” Kyle’s granny was a wise woman. She guessed what happened.
