第一节(共15小题,每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Before my first hike to the Rocky Mountains, I was a homebody. I had friends to hang out with, several hobbies, and I felt comfortable spending weeks or even months in my hometown without going anywhere. I thought there was no difference between seeing something on TV and seeing something with one’s own eyes.
The situation changed one day when Adam, my best friend, came to my room. He succeeded in persuading me to join him on his trip to the Rocky Mountains.
This was my first time in the mountains, so I was turning my head in all directions. Unluckily, the weather was foggy most of the time, and the higher we climbed the mountains, the less we could see. But I still enjoyed the hike. I walked fast, and because of that I ran out of energy long before we got to the top. Adam knew how to save energy.
When we finally got to the top, nothing had really changed. The same fog was covering everything. I felt disappointed, as I expected to see the view from above and take some photos. We spent a couple of hours on the top, and decided to turn back. Then the wind suddenly cleared the clouds and the sun came out. It wasn’t until then that I knew how beautiful the mountains looked. And for some moments I couldn’t believe my eyes.
This experience inspired me to break through my limitations and accept new challenges. I realized that I wouldn’t be able to live a life without visiting the mountains at least twice a year.
21. What a person did the author use to be before his first hike to the Rocky Mountains?
A. One enjoyed hiking in the mountains.
B. One felt comfortable in his hometown.
C. One liked persuading others.
D. One was good at talking with others.
22. What made the author unhappy during his first hike?
A. Feeling tired during the hike.
B. Not taking a camera with him.
C. Having to climb for a long time.
D. The heavy fog covering everything.
23. How did the author most probably feel after the hike?
A. Disappointed. B. Comfortable. C. Encouraged. D. Confused.

Babies can cry because they are feeling ill or are in pain, but they will also often cry if they are feeling hungry or sleepy. This can make it very difficult for parents, especially first-timers, to know why their little ones are crying.
Now, a group of researchers based at Northern Illinois University in the USA has employed artificial intelligence to create a method to distinguish between normal signals and abnormal ones, such as those resulting from an underlying illness. The method could be useful for parents at home as well as doctors, who could use it to identify cries among sick children, the researchers say. While each baby’s cry is unique, they share some features. The team developed an algorithm, based on an existing automatic speech-recognition system, to detect and recognise the features of infant cries. The algorithm incorporated a technique called compressed sensing — a process that is able to reconstruct a signal based on a very small amount of data, especially in environments with high levels of background noise. The algorithm analyses the waveforms of the infants’ cries, looking for features in their loudness, pitch and timbre common to a database of recorded baby cries previously categorised by experienced nurses and caregivers. For example, the ‘neh’ sound is generally related to being hungry, because when a baby is hungry, their tongue is typically pushed to the roof of the mouth, which leads to the ‘neh’ sound. Similarly, the ‘eh’ sound means that a baby needs to burp. Generally speaking, this happens after feeding. “Like a special language, there is lots of health-related information in various cry sounds. The differences between sound signals actually carry the information. These differences are represented by different features of the cry signals. To recognise and use the information, we have to figure out the features and then obtain the information in it,” explained the study co-author Prof Lichuan Liu.
The team hopes that the method could be widened out to assist with other areas of medicine in which decision-making relies heavily on experience. “The ultimate goals are healthier babies and less pressure on parents and care givers,” said Liu. “We are looking into cooperations with hospitals and medical research centres and hopefully we could have some products for clinical practice.”
24. What is the idea behind the algorithm developed by the team?
A. The cries of the children are all different.
B. Babies’ cries have something in common.
C. Some babies cry while hungry but others don’t.
D. Sick babies cry more often than healthy ones.
25. It can be inferred from the passage that compressed sensing is of great help when ________
A. an algorithm is not mature enough B. there is no sufficient data available
C. a signal must be reconstructed in no time D. speech-recognition technology does not work
26. According to the research team, what is the final aim of the method?
A. To make decision-making rely less on experience.
B. To call for more medical research centres to join them.
C. To help care for babies in a scientific and effective way.
D. To obtain as much information as possible from babies’ cries.
27. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A. Advancing medical practice
B. Unlocking the language of human tears
C. AI created to translate the cries of babies
D. Healthy beginnings: promoting health for babies

Climate change will be the fastest-growing cause of species loss in the Americas by midcentury, according to a new set of reports. The reports, released last week by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, included a complete set of biodiversity assessments for four major regions around the world, with contributions from more than 500 experts.
“Land degradation (退化), the loss of many species and climate change are three different faces of the same central challenge: the increasingly dangerous result of our choices on the health of our natural environment,” said a leader of an international organization. “We cannot afford to deal with any one of these three threats separately — they each deserve the highest attention and must be addressed together.”
The advantage of linked stressors is that addressing one can help the other. Working to protect natural landscapes can play a significant role in the fight against climate change, the report suggests. Restoring natural lands in the first place could deliver more than a third of the action needed by 2030 to keep global warming to below 2 degrees Celsius, the authors note. And that is a big step in preserving the world’s biodiversity, as well, according to the four reports released last week. While each report focused on a different region of the world — Africa, Europe, the Asia-Pacific region and the Americas — each one highlighted the growing threat of climate change, among a variety of other human-caused threats to global wildlife.
Situation in Africa is particularly serious, the reports suggest. Some birds and animals face population loss up to 50 percent if immediate action isn’t taken. Other global regions are facing major risks, as well. In the Americas, about 31 percent of all native species are believed to have been lost since European settlers first arrived. The report suggests that this number could climb as high as 40 percent by 2050.
28. Which of the following brings about the biggest threat to the world’s wildlife?
A. Climate change. B. Land degradation. C. Species loss. D. Ecosystem breakdown.
29. What can we infer from the last sentence in paragraph 2?
A. Lots of money is needed to deal with the threats.
B. Our attitude towards nature is not right.
C. All the problems are equally serious.
D. It is hard to make a choice.
30. Which part of the world is facing the worst species loss?
A. Europe. B. Africa.
C. The Asia-Pacific region. D. The Americas.
31. From which is this text probably taken?
A. An official report. B. A tour guidebook. C. A fashion magazine. D. A science newspaper.
D
Business innovation is an organization’s process for introducing new ideas, workflows methodologies, services or products. Like IT innovation, which calls for using technology in new ways to create a more efficient and agile organization, business innovation should enable the achievement of goals across the entire organization, with sights set on accomplishing core business aims and initiatives. Innovation often begins with idea generation, whereas ideas are narrowed down during brainstorming sessions, after which leaders consider the business viability, feasibility and desirability of each idea. Business innovation should improve one existing products, services or processes; or it should solve a problem; or it should reach new customers. Recent examples of business innovation include the introduction of the Dyson vacuum cleaner, whose creator and namesake James Dyson declared in advertisements that he set out to build a better product by applying industrial cyclone technologies to the household appliance.
The purpose of the business innovation process is to create value for the organization. That value can come from creating new revenue opportunities or driving more revenue through existing channels: from creating efficiencies that save time, money or both; or from improvements to productivity or performance. In short, innovation should lead to higher profits. Additionally, the results of an organization’s innovation process should yield a competitive advantage: it should help the organization to grow and reach — or, better still, exceed — strategic objectives.
Innovation and invention are closely linked, but the two terms are hardly interchangeable. An invention is an entirely new creation. The process of business innovation can produce an invention, but the term is broader in scope and includes the application of an existing concept or practice in a new way, or applying new technology to an existing product or process to improve upon it. To better understand the difference, consider this: The telephone is an invention, but the smartphone is an innovation.
Business innovation can also be classified as either revolutionary or evolutionary. Revolutionary business innovation yields a drastic change in a product, service, process, etc. which often destroys or supplants an existing business model. This is also known as radical innovation. Evolutionary or incremental innovation involves smaller, more continuous improvements that, while important, are not drastic enough to shift a company or market into a new paradigm. Disruptive innovation is a category that emphasizes the destructive aspect of revolutionary innovation: this term applies to business innovation that leads to the creation of a new market that displaces an existing one or, similarly, a significant upheaval in a category of products or services.
Business innovation, like most business initiatives, has both benefits and risks. Organizations should recognize on the negative side that the business innovation process can be a costly undertaking that does not always produce a return on investment (ROI); that ideas considered likely to succeed could still fail; and that stakeholders could fight the changes required to be successful. On the other hand, organizations need to weigh those risks against the benefits of business innovation.
32. What is the fundamental purpose of business innovation?
A. To generate a vast number of creative ideas through brainstorming.
B. To make more profits by replacing existing business models.
C. To facilitate the invention of entirely new products and services.
D. To enhance the company’s overall value and competitive position.
33. According to the passage, which of the following options is an example of innovation?
A. The development of a ride-hailing APP.
B. The discovery of penicillin.
C. The creation of the first electric light bulb.
D. The scientific formulation of the theory of General Relativity.
34. Based on the passage, which of the following statements is true?
A. Revolutionary innovation is risky while evolutionary innovation is safe.
B. Disruptive innovation is a separate category contrary to revolutionary innovation.
C. Evolutionary innovation focuses on the creation of new products.
D. The difference between revolutionary and evolutionary innovation lies in the scale of impact.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards business innovation?
A. Critically skeptical. B. Guardedly optimistic.
C. Unreservedly enthusiastic. D. Academically detached.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
Good study habits are essential for academic success. However, many students struggle to develop effective study routines, often falling into counterproductive patterns. 36
One of the most common mistakes is passive rereading. Many students believe that simply reading their notes or textbooks multiple times will help them remember information. However, research shows that this approach is one of the least effective study methods. 37 Instead, active recall — where students test themselves on the material without looking at it — has been proven to significantly improve retention.
Another crucial habit is managing your study environment. Your surroundings have a direct impact on concentration and productivity. 38 This means finding a quiet, well-lit space free from distractions like phones, social media, and background television. Some students find that a change of scenery — such as moving from a bedroom desk to a library — can refresh their focus.
Planning and scheduling also make a tremendous difference. Successful students plan their study sessions in advance rather than waiting until the night before an exam. 39 Breaking large tasks into smaller, manageable chunks makes them less overwhelming and helps maintain motivation throughout longer study periods.
Finally, take care of your physical health. 40 Research consistently shows that sleep deprivation reduces memory consolidation and cognitive performance. Eating balanced meals and staying hydrated also contribute to mental clarity. Students who neglect these basic needs often find that their study efforts yield disappointing results.
A. Instead, they should create a timeline that spreads revision over several days or weeks.
B. If you can’t focus in your current location, try moving to a different quiet space.
C. It doesn’t matter where you study as long as you do it for several hours every day.
D. By recognizing and adjusting these habits, students can make their study time much more effective.
E. Reading the same information repeatedly gives the brain the illusion of mastery without real understanding.
F. A quiet environment and comfortable temperature are essential for effective learning.
G. Lack of sleep, poor nutrition, and lack of exercise can seriously harm memory and focus.

You are already paying more for food due to global warming, and rising temperature will drive food prices much higher in the next decade.
According to a study done 41 the European Central Bank, they find that, by 2035, higher temperature alone will be pushing up worldwide food prices by between 0.9 and 3.2 percent every single year. This will 42 between 0.3 and 1.2 percent to overall inflation.
“There is often a sense of shock and surprise at the importance of these 43 ,” says Maximilian Kotz at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany, referring to his discussions with economists while doing the study.
44 extreme weather is increasingly affecting production and if farmers don’t adapt, the 45 will come ever more serious as the world continues to heat up.
To find out how this is 46 food prices, Kotz and his colleagues compared data on the monthly prices of a range of good and services in 121 countries between 1996 and 2021, 47 the weather conditions those countries were exposed to.
The researchers looked for 48 between food prices and factors such as the average monthly temperature, the temperature variability and measures of drought and extreme rainfall. They found a strong link between the average temperature and the food prices a month or so later. In 49 that were north of 40 degrees — the latitude of New York City, Madrid and Beijing — warmer-than-average temperatures during winter led to 50 food prices. But in summer and at all times in the rest of the world, above-average temperatures increased food prices.
What’s more, the effects on prices are 51 . “Once the prices have increased on the basis of one of these shocks, they stay higher for at least the rest of the year,” says Kotz.
They study didn’t look at why prices rose, but the likely 52 is that extreme heat is reducing yields, he says. His team went further by investing how food prices could change based on average temperature rises in climate model 53 . In the team’s worst-case emissions scenario, global food inflation due to climate change will exceed 4 per cent per year by 2060. 54 , many other factors could change by then, so the team regards its predictions for 2035 as more reliable. “We need to be aware of the fact that climate change brings huge new 55 for food and nutrition security.” Says Matin Qaim at the University of Bonn in Germany.

Young people spending hours staring at screens means half the world may need glasses within 30 years. Phone devices and computer screens are 56 (blame) for the rising risk of short-sightedness among children and young adults, say scientists.
Researchers have found high levels of looking at a phone or tablet 57 (link) with around a 30 percent higher risk of short-sightedness, also known as myopia. Researchers fear that this could mean that by 2050, half the world or five billion people could be short-sighted.
In 2019, the World Health Organization recommended children 58 two should not have any screen time and children aged four to five should have no more than one hour a day of sedentary screen time. 59 in the same year, a Census Wide survey of 2,000 British 60 (family) found children were spending an average of 23 hours a week staring at screens.
Numerous studies have also suggested that the number has 61 (vast) increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Around half the global population is expected to have myopia by 2050. This research comes at a time 62 children have been spending more time than ever 63 (look) at screens for long periods, due to class suspension, and it’s clear 64 urgent research is needed to further understand how 65 (expose) to digital devices can affect our eyes and vision,” said Professor Bourne of Ophthalmology at Anglia Ruskin University.

Leo’s fingers trembled as he held the permission slip for the state music competition. For weeks, he’d practiced his guitar piece until his fingertips ached, imagining the spotlight warming his face. But now, the paper felt heavy with unspoken words.
“My parents can’t know,” he whispered to his best friend Maya at lunch. “They said focus on academics, not this ‘distraction’.”
Maya frowned. “But you’re amazing! This is your chance.”
“I’ll figure it out,” Leo said, though uncertainty worried him. He needed a parent’s signature and the $50 entry fee — both seemed too difficult to obtain.
That afternoon in music class, Mr. Davies announced the competition details. “The winner receives a $1,000 scholarship and performs with the state symphony.” Leo’s heart leaped then sank. The scholarship could convince his parents music wasn’t just a hobby, but the obstacles felt too difficult to overcome.
Over the next month, Leo became a master of deception. He kept all this from his parents. And he took extra shifts at the local cafe every weekend, strumming his guitar for tips during quiet hours. He forged (伪造) the permission slip, his hand shaking at the dishonesty. Each day, the weight of his secret grew heavier.
The morning of the competition arrived, cloudy and grim. Leo’s guitar case felt like lead as he walked to school. He’d barely slept, haunted by nightmares of discovery and failure. As he entered the auditorium, his breath caught — there, in the third row, sat his parents, fixing their eyes on him.
Mr. Davies approached, smiling. “I called them, Leo! Surprise!”
But Leo felt no joy, only a wave of panic rose from the bottom of his heart.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150左右;
(2)开头已给出。
Leo dragged his feet toward his parents, his head hung low, ready to bear their anger.
When it was Leo’s turn to perform, he walked onto the stage with a light heart.

M: Hey, I get enough of it from friends, and now from you!
W: Maybe you could wear a hairpiece. Some hairpieces are quite natural.
M: Oh no. I’m afraid it will slip off my head easily.
W: Well, have you ever thought about seeking medical advice? There are new advances in medicine that can slow hair loss and help generate new growth, though it’s somewhat expensive.
M: Ah, I still don’t believe medical treatment can prevent permanent hair loss.
W: Well, maybe you should just learn to live with your hair thinning.
M: I know appearances shouldn’t matter, but I just can’t give up hope.

As far as I am concerned, studying in a group prevails over solitary learning, as it is more conducive to academic excellence and personal development.
Group study stimulates the collision of diverse ideas, facilitating a deeper understanding of complex subjects. Additionally, when confronted with challenging problems, group members can pool their wisdom and resources, providing alternative perspectives and innovative solutions. Moreover, this collaborative approach cultivates crucial interpersonal skills, such as communication and teamwork, which are indispensable in both academic and professional settings.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
I firmly believe that group study is far more effective than studying alone.
Firstly, discussing topics with peers allows us to exchange different perspectives, helping everyone understand difficult concepts more deeply. Secondly, when we explain ideas to each other, it strengthens our own knowledge while identifying gaps in our understanding.
Most importantly, group work develops essential teamwork skills like communication and compromise. These abilities are critical for future success, as real-world problems are rarely solved in isolation. Studying together turns learning into an active, social experience rather than a lonely task.
67. One possible version:
Leo dragged his feet toward his parents, his head hung low, ready to bear their anger. Before he could mumble an apology, his mother reached out and gently hugged him. “We’ve noticed that you’ve been coming home late and looking exhausted these days,” she said, with no anger in her voice. His father sighed, leaning forward slightly, “Mr. Davies told us everything. We’re sorry we never let you talk about your love for music.” Leo froze, tears welling up in his eyes. He choked out his pent-up (被压抑的) thoughts, telling them how much music meant to him, how he’d dreamed of this competition but feared their disapproval. As he spoke, the heavy weight in his chest lifted little by little, the guilt of dishonesty fading with each word.
When it was Leo’s turn to perform, he walked onto the stage with a light heart. He glanced at his parents, who sat straight, their eyes filled with pride and encouragement. Plucking the guitar strings gently, he poured all his emotions into the music: the anxiety of hiding his secret, the joy of being understood, and the passion for the melody he loved. When the last note faded, the auditorium erupted in applause. His parents stood up, clapping loudly, smiles spreading across their faces. Later, though he didn’t win the scholarship, Leo felt like a winner. He realized that avoiding communication only brought fear and guilt; it was opening up to his family that truly solved his troubles, bridging the gap between their expectations and his dreams.
