Four great museums in the world
Acropolis Museum
Devoted to the Parthenon and its surrounding temples, the Acropolis Museum in Athens is consistently rated as one of the best museums in the world. Designed by New York’s Bernard Tschumi, with local Greek architect Michael Photiadis, it is the ideal home for the ancient artefacts (手工艺品) that were found in and around the Acropolis.
State Hermitage Museum
If you looked at every object in St Petersburg’s State Hermitage Museum for one minute each, it would take 11 years to see everything! Highlights include a 200-year-old clock and Impressionist masterpieces, but make sure to take plenty of pictures of the building too.
Instituto Inhotim
The Instituto Inhotim in Brumadinho only opened in 2002, but has already firmly established itself on the international museum circuit. Spreading across 140 hectares (公顷) of Brazilian forest, it’s as much a botanical garden as it is a contemporary art museum. It has filled its gardens with sculptures by Olafur Eliasson and Yayoi Kusama.
Rockbund Art Museum
Situated in the historic Royal Asiatic Society building in Shanghai, the Rockbund Art Museum regularly exhibits great works from China’s contemporary artists, as well as international shows such as the annual Hugo Boss Art Award. Despite being updated by British architect David Chipperfield in 2007, the building still maintains the minimalist style of its original 1930s design.
1. Who designed the museum for the Parthenon artefacts?
A. Olafur’ Eliasson. B. Bernard Tschumi.
C. Yayoi Kusama. D. David Chipperfield.
2. What is special about the Instituto Inhotim?
A. It combines art and nature. B. It has a really long history.
C. It houses a lot of antique clocks. D. It is the venue for many award shows.
3. Which museum features works by Chinese artists?

San Francisco’s Chinatown is a beautiful, tourist-friendly neighborhood. I’d visited Chinatown a few times while growing up in Northern California, but never as an adult who could fully dive into this unique neighborhood until recently. So I decided to go to San Francisco, curious to explore Chinatown’s amazing shops and designs from a new perspective.
My afternoon in Chinatown began at Clay Street. I was traveling with my husband, Ryan, who had never been a tourist in San Francisco before, so it made sense to see where our adventure would take us! We took the downhill path on Clay Street and within a few steps, saw Hang Ah Street.
More of a walkable alley (小巷) than a street, Hang Ah was fairly empty except for a few back doors. We were visiting toward the tail end of the Mid-Autumn Festival, so the alleyway showed us our first view of those special traditional Chinese lanterns that Chinatown has become synonymous with (密不可分的). Hanging from the rooftops, they were a lovely introduction to our adventure.
We continued down Clay Street, not sure where or when to turn left or right, until Waverly Place. We thought Hang Ah was beautiful, but Waverly Place completely stopped us in our tracks. I still remember the look on Ryan’s face; he was completely taken aback, with widened eyes and a camera in hand capturing every moment.
Walking down Waverly, we then heard the sound of wooden instruments coming from what appeared to be a music school. Even though I’d been to Chinatown before, there was something wonderful about this day, this street, this music and of course, the person I was traveling with who made it even more special.
4. What decision did the author make?
A To visit Chinatown. B. To open a Chinese store.
C. To move to Northern California. D. To meet her husband in San Francisco.
5. What impressed the author at Hang Ah Street?
A. The big crowd. B. The colorful rooftops.
C. The unique festival lanterns. D. The doors designed in Chinese style.
6. How did Ryan feel when he saw Waverly Place?
A. Hopeful. B. Excited. C. Confident. D. Relaxed.
7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To share her one-day trip. B. To thank her husband for his support.
C. To describe her experiences in a new city. D. To recollect her childhood days in San Francisco.
A 5. C 6. B 7. A

根据首段“San Francisco’s Chinatown is a beautiful, tourist-friendly neighborhood. I’d visited Chinatown a few times while growing up in Northern California, but never as an adult who could fully dive into this unique neighborhood until recently. So I decided to go to San Francisco, curious to explore Chinatown’s amazing shops and designs from a new perspective.(旧金山的唐人街是一个美丽且适合游客游览的街区。我在北加州长大的过程中去过唐人街几次,但成年后直到最近才真正能够深入体验这个独特的街区。所以我决定前往旧金山,好奇地想从一个全新的视角探索唐人街那些令人惊叹的店铺和设计)”可知,作者成长于北加利福尼亚时曾去过几次唐人街,但成年后才得以深入探索这个独特社区,于是决定前往旧金山,以新视角探索唐人街的店铺和设计。故选A。
根据第三段“More of a walkable alley than a street, Hang Ah was fairly empty except for a few back doors. We were visiting toward the tail end of the Mid-Autumn Festival, so the alleyway showed us our first view of those special traditional Chinese lanterns that Chinatown has become synonymous with. Hanging from the rooftops, they were a lovely introduction to our adventure.(与其说是一条街道,不如说是一条适于步行的小巷,杭阿巷颇为空旷,只有几扇后门。我们到访时正值中秋节的尾声,小巷里悬挂着那些与唐人街密不可分的特殊传统中式灯笼,这是我们首次看到它们。灯笼从屋檐垂下,为我们接下来的旅程献上了一场可爱的开场)”可知,作者拜访时正值中秋节尾声,杭阿巷里悬挂在屋顶的传统中国灯笼,是唐人街的标志性元素,给作者留下了深刻印象。故选C。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“We continued down Clay Street, not sure where or when to turn left or right, until Waverly Place. We thought Hang Ah was beautiful, but Waverly Place completely stopped us in our tracks. I still remember the look on Ryan’s face; he was completely taken aback, with widened eyes and a camera in hand capturing every moment.(我们沿着克莱街继续前行,不确定该在何处、何时左转或右转,一直走到韦弗利街。
故选A。
C
In his book “Second Act”, Henry Oliver explores the potential of those later years for something more than wisdom or the giving of valuable advice.
Combining biographical (传记的) descriptions with scientific research, Mr. Oliver tries to understand the nature of the late bloomer (大器晚成者) and the potential for achievement later in life. We find out how the architect Frank Lloyd Wright began with the Pennsylvania house known as Fallingwater in his late 60s. And there’s Ray Kroc, who started with one McDonald’s restaurant in California when he was in his 50s and turned it into a global business.
Mr. Oliver’s appealing descriptions of individuals flesh out such data-driven studies: Taken together they form a collective illustration of how late-in-life periods of creative flowering are generated. One important factor: The subjects here have certainly not been inactive before their successes.
The title of “Second Act” itself proves to be underselling what the book has to offer: Mr. Oliver is really offering a guide to the broader principles that make a strong career. There is an importance to slow and steady progress, to showing up and doing the work. A chapter on aging explores how an important requirement of a successful career is simply to be consistent: to improve, to try new things, and to keep creating output. Achievement, he suggests, “isn’t reliant just on our mental ability staying high but on whether we choose to keep using and adapting the capacity we have.”
So too, when we think about our careers — and our lives more broadly — we must adopt a humble attitude: We cannot predict the shape and path of our careers, so we must make space in our lives for chance encounters, various kinds of luck, and nonlinearity (非线性) to work for us, rather than against us. This shows the idea of the “chaos theory of careers,” according to which small influences can have an outsize and unexpected impact, and so we must be ready to make use of them.
8. What do the examples of Wright and Kroc illustrate?
A. The books’ impact. B. The book’s theme.
C. The celebrities’ advice. D. The wisdom Oliver earned.
9. What does the phrase “flesh out” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Add details to. B. Present a list of.
C. Draw inspiration from. D. Outline the structure of.
10. What does the author suggest readers do in the last paragraph?
A. Ignore small influences in life. B. Predict a career path accurately.
C. Choose careers based on interest. D. Be open to unexpected opportunities.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. More Chances with Time B. Show up at Any Age
C. Better Late Than Never D. The Older, the Cleverer
B 9. A 10. D 11. C
根据第二段“Combining biographical (传记) descriptions with scientific research, Mr. Oliver tries to understand the nature of the late bloomer (大器晚成者) and the potential for achievement later in life. We find out how the architect Frank Lloyd Wright began with the Pennsylvania house known as Fallingwater in his late 60s. And there’s Ray Kroc, who started with one McDonald’s restaurant in California when he was in his 50s and turned it into a global business.(Oliver先生将传记描述与科学研究相结合,试图了解大器晚成者的本质以及晚年取得成就的潜力。我们了解到建筑师Frank Lloyd Wright在60多岁时以宾夕法尼亚州的流水别墅开始了他的职业生涯。还有Ray Kroc,他在50多岁时在加利福尼亚开了一家麦当劳餐厅,并将其发展成了一家全球性企业。)”可知,Wright和Kroc的例子是为了说明大器晚成者以及晚年取得成就的潜力,这正是这本书的主题。故选B项。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“Mr. Oliver’s appealing descriptions of individuals flesh out such data-driven studies: Taken together they form a collective illustration of how late-in-life periods of creative flowering are generated.(Oliver先生对个人的吸引人的描述flesh了这些以数据驱动的研究:它们共同构成了晚年创造性繁荣时期如何产生的集体说明。)” A项“Add details to.(添加细节)”符合语境。故选A项。
根据最后一段中的“So too, when we think about our careers — and our lives more broadly — we must adopt a humble attitude: We cannot predict the shape and path of our careers, so we must make space in our lives for chance encounters, various kinds of luck, and nonlinearity (非线性) to work for us, rather than against us.(同样,当我们考虑我们的职业生涯——以及更广泛的生活时——我们必须采取谦逊的态度:我们无法预测职业生涯的形状和路径,所以我们必须在生活中为偶然的相遇、各种运气和非线性留下空间,让它们为我们工作,而不是反对我们。)”
根据第一段“In his book “Second Act”, Henry Oliver explores the potential of those later years for something more than wisdom or the giving of valuable advice.(在他的《Second Act》一书中,Henry Oliver探讨了晚年除了智慧或提供宝贵建议之外的潜力。)” C项“Better Late Than Never(迟做总比不做好)”符合文章主旨。故选C项。
D
Human noise pollution is increasing and affecting ecosystems worldwide. Most of the research on the effects of noise on wild animals has looked at how a population or species is affected, says Grace Blackburn, a PhD. candidate. However, individual differences may enable some animals to perform better than others.
In a new study, Blackburn and her coworkers focused on how differences in cognitive (认知的) ability influence individual responses to noise in a population of Australian magpies (喜鹊). These birds have been studied consistently since 2013.
First, the researchers followed 75 wild magpies for 20-minute periods, noting all their behaviors and the presence of any human-made noise. Next, they conducted playback experiments in which they broadcast magpie alarm calls with and without the noise of planes in the background to see how the noise affected individuals’ anti-predator (反捕食者) responses. The final step was administering (实施) a cognitive test to the magpies. The researchers used an associative learning task in which the magpies had to associate a specific color with a food reward. “The smarter the bird, the quicker they learn this association,” says Blackburn.
From their observations, the researchers saw that loud human-made noises (such as planes) resulted in changes in the magpies’ behavior. In the presence of noise pollution, the birds searched for food less, were less efficient at finding food, sang less and spent more time being on guard.
However, Blackburn found that cognition influenced how magpies responded to plane noise. Birds that performed better in the associative learning task were able to maintain their normal responses to alarm calls, even when those calls were played with noise.
“This is the first time that cognition has been linked to the ability of an animal to deal with humanmade noise,” Blackburn says. As the human population continues to grow and expand, understanding the role of cognition in how animals deal with environmental changes could prove useful in helping protect not only Australian magpies but other affected wildlife.
12. How did the researchers measure the magpies’ intelligence?
A. By uncovering their population expansion secrets.
B. By testing their color-food association skills.
C. By assessing their strategies when fighting predators.
D. By observing their reactions to alarm calls.
13. In what way were the magpies affected by plane noise?
A. They lost their hearing. B. They made louder sounds.
C. They worked together to seek food. D. They watched for threats more closely.
14. What can be inferred about the smarter magpies?
A. They could handle the noise better. B. They could identify different planes.
C. They had more defensive habits. D. They preferred to sing with others.
15. How does the author find applying cognition study to animal protection?
A. Objective. B. Ineffective. C. Significant. D. Challenging.
B 13. D 14. A 15. C

根据第四段“From their observations, the researchers saw that loud human-made noises (such as planes) resulted in changes in the magpies’ behavior. In the presence of noise pollution, the birds searched for food less, were less efficient at finding food, sang less and spent more time being on guard.(从他们的观察中,研究人员发现,人类制造的巨大噪音(比如飞机声)会导致喜鹊行为的改变。在存在噪音污染的情况下,这些鸟儿寻找食物的次数减少,寻找食物的效率降低,鸣叫减少,并且花更多时间保持警惕)”可知,噪音环境下喜鹊觅食减少、效率降低、鸣叫减少,且花更多时间保持警戒。故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“However, Blackburn found that cognition influenced how magpies responded to plane noise. Birds that performed better in the associative learning task were able to maintain their normal responses to alarm calls, even when those calls were played with noise.(然而,布莱克本发现认知会影响喜鹊对飞机噪音的反应。在联想学习任务中表现更好的鸟类,即使警报声与噪音同时播放,它们也能够保持对警报声的正常反应)”可知,认知能力强的喜鹊在有噪音时仍能保持对警报声的正常反应,说明它们能更好地应对噪音。故选A。
根据末段中的“As the human population continues to grow and expand, understanding the role of cognition in how animals deal with environmental changes could prove useful in helping protect not only Australian magpies but other affected wildlife.(随着人类人口持续增长和扩张,了解动物在应对环境变化时认知所起的作用,可能不仅有助于保护澳洲喜鹊,也有助于保护其他受影响的野生动物)”可知,作者指出该研究有助于保护喜鹊及其他受影响的野生动物,可见其认为该应用具有重要意义。

Lynn was sad as she tried to remove a stain (污渍) from her new T-shirt. Her sister April had ruined her Saturday morning. Lynn had pushed April onto a table, spilling juice all over the floor. Her mother blamed April without listening, and April, unfairly grounded, took revenge (报复) by spilling coffee on Lynn’s T-shirt. Lynn thought April should be punished, remembering how April had poured glue on her seat in class the week before. Lynn couldn’t have been happier to see her sister suffer.
This chain of revenge had been going on forever between the two girls ever since there had been too much stress in eighth grade. And then their mom was always on her phone and taking business trips. Sometimes she seemed to have disappeared off the face of the Earth, hardly having time to stay with her family.
Lynn thought about the past. She remembered how peaceful she and April had been in third grade and how their family used to spend time together. She felt sad. She gave up cleaning her T-shirt and decided it was time to stop fighting with her sister.
So, Lynn changed into a new T-shirt, took a deep breath and entered her sister’s room. April looked confused for a second wondering why her sister was here. “Do you want to conquer the world?” Lynn asked. She didn’t actually mean to conquer the world, but when the two girls were little, they challenged themselves to climb a pretty high rock at the back of their house inside a small wood. And when they got to the top, they would’ve “conquered the world”. The sisters hadn’t actually managed to do that yet, and they stopped trying since it looked a bit stupid for teenagers to climb a rock. After that, they basically forgot about the whole thing.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
April looked puzzled for a second, and then laughed.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
And the method they used worked!
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
April looked puzzled for a second and then laughed. "You still remember that silly rock?" she said, anger fading in her eyes. Lynn nodded shyly. "I miss our friendship, not fights," she whispered. April softened, staring at the stained T-shirt guiltily. "Sorry about your shirt," she mumbled. Lynn shook her head. "Let’s finish what we started," she said, grabbing April’s hand. They walked to the backyard, chatting about old memories. Climbing the rock was tough, but they pulled, pushed and cheered each other on. Their laughter echoed, replacing long-held tension.
And the method they used worked! The revenge chain broke. Whenever annoyed, they’d recall the rock adventure. Their mom noticed the change, putting down her phone and planning a family trip. Lynn and April learned to listen and forgive instead of blaming. The stained T-shirt reminded them of silly fights, but more of the day they reconnected. They didn’t just conquer the rock—they conquered anger and rediscovered sisterly joy.

A. To visit Chinatown.

From their observations the researchers saw that loud human-made noises (such as planes) resulted in changes in the magpies’ behavior.
15 How does the author find applying cognition study to animal protection?
A. Objective. B. Ineffective. C. Significant. D. Challenging.

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

April looked puzzled for a second, and then laughed.
