Dear Diary,
I’ve had enough. My parents are always comparing me with other children. In their opinion, my cousin Bella gets better grades than me. Our neighbor Leo is good at doing housework, while I am lazy. Oscar plays the piano wonderfully. However, when they talk about me, they seem to think I don’t have any talents. This really upsets me.
Lucas
Do you have a similar problem? Don’t worry. These tips might help you.
Almost every student has been through this. You are not alone, so don’t be too hard on yourself. Sometimes the way parents show their care feels hurtful, but behind their words is often an expectation. For example, when they say something like “Bella studies so hard”, what they try to get across is their hope that you can be more self-disciplined(自律的). If you can understand what they truly mean, it may help you feel less upset.
Try to talk to your parents in a calm way. You could say, “Mum, comparing me to others makes me feel sad.” Let them know that your hard work is important, not just the result. Compare yourself to your past self. For example, you can share with them what you’ve done better than before. Over time, they will turn their focus from other kids back to you.
Just because your parents compare you with others doesn’t mean you’re not good enough. No one is perfect — even the kids your parents often talk about. Try to notice what you’re good at, and focus on how you grow and improve. Each day, write down one thing you did well. Little by little, your confidence will grow. Slowly, you’ll find yourself becoming better.
4. Why does Lucas feel upset?
A. He is bad at studying and doing housework.
B. His parents always compare him with other kids.
C. His cousins and neighbors don’t like him.
D. He has no talents at all in his daily life.
5. What does the writer think of parents’ comparing kids?
A. Parents just want their kids to be perfect.
B. Parents’ words are always hurtful and meaningless.
C. It usually shows parents’ expectation and care.
D. Parents never understand their kids’ feelings.
6. What is the writer’s advice on talking with parents?
A. Argue with parents when feeling sad.
B. Tell parents your true feelings calmly.
C. Never talk about your problems with parents.
D. Show parents your perfect exam results only.
7. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Lucas is really a lazy and talentless boy.
B. Parents’ caring ways may hurt their kids sometimes.
C. We should never care about our study results.
D. Other excellent kids have no shortcomings.

There are more than 8 billion people on Earth. By 2050, there will be nearly 10 billion. But for many animals, the future is not so sure. Scientists say about 30% of known species (物种) may disappear by 2050. Now, some people have an idea to help: they want to save their genes (基因). That way, even if an animal dies out, scientists might bring it back one day.
A company called Colossal Biosciences is working on this. It is collecting millions of samples from over 10,000 animal species. The samples will be kept at the Museum of the Future in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The project will first focus on the world’s 100 most endangered species. These include the snow leopard, the savanna elephant, the great white shark, and the white rhino.
Colossal hopes to open the special lab in 2027. Matt James works for the company. He says they’re going to collect 10,000 species in the end. They plan to add several hundred new species every year.
The lab will not just keep samples. It will also be a place for scientists to work. Visitors to the museum will be able to watch scientists work. Scientists worldwide can use the information from the lab too.
There are other projects like this, such as one at the San Diego Zoo. But Colossal’s project will be the biggest. The company is working with 75 groups to collect samples from wild animals. Scientists will study the samples at the lab and save the information in a digital library. The samples will then be kept in very cold freezers (冷冻箱). The temperature can go as low as -196℃.
Ben Lamm runs Colossal. He says we are losing species very fast and must act now. The world needs a good backup plan This lab could be that plan.
12. What may happen to about 30% of known species by 2050?
A. They will grow fast.
B. They may disappear.
C. They will get new genes.
D. They will live in new places.
13. Where will the animal samples be kept?
A. At the San Diego Zoo.
B. In a library in America.
C. At the Museum of the Future in Dubai.
D. In a local lab of Colossal Company.
14. Which advantage does Colossal’s lab have?
A. It is the biggest project of its kind.
B. It only accepts local scientists.
C. It can warm animal samples quickly.
D. It opens to visitors every day for free.
15. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

I will never forget the summer day when I learned to ride a bike at the age of eight. It was more than just learning a new skill. ____16____
At eight, I thought riding a bike was exciting but scary. Back then, I was still using training wheels (辅助轮). ____17____ One day during the summer break, my father said to me, “Training wheels are for babies. It’s time to ride without them.”
My father took the training wheels off. That gave me mixed (复杂的) feelings. Part of me wanted to show I was old enough to ride a bike. So I said I was ready. ____18____ To a young child, losing the training wheels felt like a huge change.
To my surprise, once I began, my fear of falling gave way to excitement. My father was patient. He held the back of my seat and ran alongside, teaching me how to pedal (踩踏板) and turn. We practised near my grandfather’s house for hours. Of course, there were hard moments—I fell a few times. ____19____
Even now, whenever fear holds me back from something new, I think back to that day. This experience taught me an important lesson: what feels scary at first can turn into something wonderful, and all it takes is one brave step. ____20____ It’s also a guide to my whole life, teaching me to embrace (拥抱) change and believe in myself.
A. But part of me was scared.
B. This childhood memory is not just about a bike.
C. They helped keep my balance.
D. But soon, with growing confidence, I could ride to the corner without falling.
E. I really miss those days.
F. To this day, that memory still guides me.
F 17. C 18. A 19. D 20. B
前文提到学骑车不只是学新技能,F项“To this day, that memory still guides me.”
前文提到作者当时还在用辅助轮,C项“They helped keep my balance.”
与前文“Part of me wanted to show…”构成“Part of me…But part of me…”
前文提到练习时摔倒了好几次,D项“But soon, with growing confidence, I could ride to the corner without falling.”
后文出现“It’s also a guide to my whole life”的递进表述,B项“This childhood memory is not just about a bike.”的not just和后文的also形成呼应,衔接连贯。
