I began studying the violin when I was nine. The next year, I began studying with Natalie Ghent, who was my teacher until I left high school.
Once, Mrs. Ghent held a concert at a school art festival. I played near the end of the concert. I told myself over and over again, “Don’t make mistakes”. But after I played for a while, I forgot the music. I tried my best to remember it but I couldn’t. I had to stop and look at others. When the whole thing was finished I cried sadly.
Mrs. Ghent came to comfort (安慰) me. Then she told me about a coming concert at another hall, and she hoped I would go there with her. The concert was great because it was held by the famous musician Mischa Elman. I agreed happily.
Mischa Elman’s performance was wonderful. But what I remembered most was Mrs. Ghent’s words: “I have read his book before. He had similar experiences as you when he was young. The key to his success is never fearing to make mistakes. It was the point of the lesson that everybody makes mistakes; even the best players do the same.”
Now, when I meet my students who are timid or afraid of making mistakes, I will tell them that if they don’t make a mistake, they will never play beautiful music.

Many Chinese mothers are afraid that their children will fall behind their classmates, so these mothers are becoming “tiger mothers”. They believe the harder their children study, the happier life they will have in the future. Is it true? Lulu and her sister Sophia may have a say.
Lulu and Sophia have a “tiger mothers”. She pushed them a lot when they were young. For example, they were not allowed to get grades lower than A. They had to practice the piano or violin for several hours a day. There were no games or TV.
The tiger mother, Amy, is a Chinese-American professor at Yale Law School in the USA. Several years ago, she wrote a book named Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother and shared her strict parenting style(育儿方式) in it.
Many people don’t like Amy’s style of parenting. They once worried that her daughters would not be happy. However, the two girls have grown up and they are thankful to their mother. Sophia has just graduated from Yale University. She is hardworking, friendly and helpful. Not long ago she shared some useful studying tips online. Lulu is also a warm, smart and popular girl in her friends’ eyes. She said tiger mothers believed that a child could succeed by being pushed to go all out.
Still not everyone agrees with the tiger mother’s parenting style. In fact, there isn’t a parenting style that fits everyone. What’s the best parenting style for you? Maybe you should work it out together with your parents.

The first thing people notice about other people is the way they look. And how you look makes an impression on people. So you can use this knowledge to your advantage.
If you look neat and clean, people will feel you’re the kind of person who makes an effort. A nice appearance shows that you value yourself and what other people think of you.
Showing a nice appearance doesn’t mean you have to spend a lot of money on clothes or accessories. Someone can look messy in an expensive suit if they don’t brush their hair or clean their clothes. Someone else can appear great in an old shirt that has been cleaned and pressed. Showing that you take care of your appearance is more important than what you wear or how expensive your haircut is.
In addition to (除了) taking care of your appearance, it’s also important to consider if your appearance is appropriate (适当的) for the situation. You may look lovely in your party clothes or feel confident in your business suit, but these would look out of place in a more casual setting, such as at a picnic or at the cinema. It’s important to be comfortable in what you’re wearing, but you should also fit in with what other people will be wearing. Wear what suits both you and the situation best: jeans and T-shirts are fine for friends and the movies; a nice shirt and a suit are more appropriate for work; party clothes should be saved for parties.
Think about what the majority of people will be wearing in the situation and wear something that fits in and makes you feel comfortable.
27. The underlined word “accessories” means “________” in Chinese.
28. Showing a nice appearance means ________.
A. that you have to spend a lot of money on clothes
B. that you should often change your clothes
C. making your hair nice and clean
D. making others understand that you take care of your appearance
29. Paragraph 4 mainly tells us ________.
A. to take care of our appearance
B. to make our appearance suitable for the situation
C. to make ourselves feel comfortable.
D. to wear what others wear
30. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. Clothes and Jobs B. Do not Judge People by Their Appearance
C. Show a Nice Appearance D. How to Feel Comfortable

11. It’s necessary for us to listen to our teacher’s advice.
It’s+adj.+for sb. to do sth.(对某人来说,做某事是……的。),句中It是形式主语,用来避免句子头重脚轻,划线部分to listen to our teacher’s advice是动词不定式短语,作句子真正的主语,故选B。
12. If you did something wrong, you should say sorry.
13. This activity is so effective for us to improve our English.

14. I think that the best way is to read aloud.
【答案】A
本题中that引导宾语从句,作think的宾语;the best way是从句主语;is是系动词;to read aloud是不定式作表语,说明主语the best way的内容。故选A。
15. They haven’t seen each other for ages.
【答案】A

A. to take care of our appearance
B. to make our appearance suitable for the situation
C. to make ourselves feel comfortable.
