The summer before I started high school, my mind was full of worries. I had read countless articles in magazines about how challenging high school could be. The building was huge, the classes were harder, and worst of all, I was going to be a small fish in a very big river.
On the first morning, I stood at the gates of Oakridge High, clutching (紧握) my schedule tightly. My first class was Biology in Room 302. I took a deep breath and stepped inside. The hallway was a sea of students rushing in different directions, laughing and shouting. I felt completely confused and totally lost.
After walking around for what felt like hours, the warning bell rang. Panic set in. I was going to be late on my very first day! Just as I was about to give up and sit on the stairs, a girl with bright blue hair walked past. She noticed my panicked expression and stopped.
“Freshman?” she asked with a kind smile. “Lost?”
I nodded helplessly. “I’m looking for Room 302.”
“Oh, you’re in the wrong wing. Science labs are in the East Building. Follow me, I’m heading that way,” she offered. As we walked, she introduced herself as Maya, a junior. She told me that she had gotten lost twice on her first day. Her words immediately made me feel better.
When I finally got into Room 302, the teacher hadn’t started yet. I sat down, realizing that the “scary” high school I had imagined wasn’t so bad after all. People were willing to help if you just asked. It was a new start, and I was ready for it.

“Red tourism”, a new form of tourism in which people visit locations and memorials (纪念碑) of historical significance to the Communist Party of China, has given a much-needed shot in the arm of the domestic (国内的) tourism industry in summer. And red tourism will be more popular during the National Day Golden Week holiday.
Ticket bookings for red tourism sites in June increased by five times with local and short trips to red tourism sites being the choice of about 88 percent of such tourists. And the search for the term “red tourism” on Mafengwo, a Chinese travel service and social-networking platform, increased by 300 percent during the summer holidays.
Red tourism is not only about the joy of visiting a new place and taking in the wonderful sights. It is also about gaining knowledge about history and being inspired by the stories of the people who gave their lives to the founding of the People’s Republic in 1949 and worked for the well-being of the Chinese people. By rediscovering history and passing on the stories of the Chinese revolution and its heroes to the next generations, people can uplift their spirits.
Red tourism can also be used as an opportunity to develop rural (农村的) areas because most of the revolutionary bases and red tourism sites are in the countryside. It can raise the earnings (收入) of local people, Since red tourism creates jobs and helps increase farmers’ earnings, it can help local development.
Data show that in the first half of 2022, more than 30 percent of all tourists visited red tourism sites in rural areas, which was 10 percent more than the last year. Yet red tourism faces certain developmental problems, mainly because some local government officials have failed to make the best use of red tourism resources for local development.

A. It is a traditional form of tourism. B. It is not popular with the young.
C. It has made tourism full of new life. D. It is about visiting beautiful scenery.
29. What does the underlined word “uplift ”in Paragraph 3 probably mean ?
A. Raise. B. Apply.
C. Confuse. D. Organize.
30. What is the benefit of red tourism for rural areas?
A. Local people can make more money.
B. It can offer job opportunities to visitors.
C. It can help improve farming equipment.
D. Local people can receive much help from society.
31. Where is the passage probably taken from?
A. A storybook. B. A news report.
C. A fashion magazine. D. A travel journal.
D
Do you remember hearing more birdsong in the garden and countryside when you were young? Sadly, what you noticed is correct. Our songbird populations have dropped by 50% in just two generations and many are still under threat (威胁). One organization is trying hard to make sure they don’t fall silent.
SongBird Survival is the only charity (慈善机构) in the UK that works on stopping this drop. Since 2000, it’s been supporting research carried out by experts at top British universities and environmental protection groups looking into the causes of falling bird numbers.
Susan Morgan, chief executive of SongBird Survival, says there are different reasons. “How we farm the land has changed, influencing birds’ living space and how they find food. Climate change is having an influence, and there are new threats, too, such as pollution of waterways and pesticides (杀虫剂). There are lots of birds and problems all mixed together. But we’re working hard to find the main ones and fix them.”
The good news is that there are ways that we can all help support the birds in our gardens. In fact, SongBird Survival is showing this clearly in a special garden at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show. It is made to show the key parts of living space, water and food that are important for bird life.
One of the purposes of this garden is to encourage our children and grandchildren to become songbird champions (捍卫者). It shows how we can solve the problem in our own back gardens.
“We want it to be a space that a family could be in and encourage a lifelong love of birds. I remember my grandad talking to me about birds and putting up a nest box (鸟巢箱) — that kind of thing forms a lasting connection and you get the happiness of birds as well from a young age. We can all do our bit to make sure our ‘friends’ are still here in years to come,” Susan says.
32. What is the main task of SongBird Survival?
A. Studying the singing of songbirds.
B. Organizing bird-watching activities.
C. Building more gardens for songbirds.
D. Stopping the drop in songbird populations.
33. What does Susan mainly talk about in paragraph 3?
A. Changes in farming methods.
B. Causes of songbirds threats.
C. The influence of human activities.
D. The importance of songbirds to humans.
34. What is special about the garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show ?
A. It can attract tourists to the show.
B. It can provide space for different birds.
C. It shows what songbirds’ living environment looks like.
D. It shows how to support songbirds in one’s own gardens.
35.What is the best title for the passage?

B. Building gardens for Flower Shows
C. Protecting songbirds from falling silent
D. Forming lasting connections with families

Jamie had a heart full of love for cats. Every afternoon after school, he would walk through the neighborhood with a paper bag of food, softly calling to the stray (流浪的) cats. They would come out from behind cars and under trees, their eyes lighting up at the sound of his voice. He had names for each one — Whiskers, Patch, Shadow, Luna — and knew their favorite treats.
One day, Officer Gruff, the stern-faced (面容严厉的) animal control officer, posted a notice on the community board: “Stray Cat Control Plan Begins Next Week.” Jamie felt very sad. He couldn’t imagine the streets without the cats. That night, he couldn’t sleep. He lay in bed, thinking, “I have to do something.”
With quiet determination, Jamie started bringing the cats home, one by one. He cleared out space in his room, setting up small boxes with old clothes and placing bowls of food and water in the corners. He even opened the window just enough for them to go in and out when needed. His room was filled with soft meows, playful pouncing (猛扑), and warmth. He kept everything tidy and quiet so his parents wouldn’t find out.
But secrets don’t stay hidden for long. One afternoon, while Jamie was feeding Luna by the roadside, Officer Gruff pulled up in his car. Jamie stepped out and had a serious look. “I’ll take away all the stray cats soon,” he warned. Jamie stood up and said in a shaky but determined voice, “I won’t let you do that. These cats are my friends.” The officer shook his head and walked away.
That night, Jamie made a decision. He printed flyers (传单) and dropped them in mailboxes, inviting everyone to a neighborhood meeting in the park. On the day of the meeting, the park slowly filled with interested neighbors — parents, children, and even Officer Gruff, who stood quietly at the back with his arms crossed.

Knowing you are planning to travel to my hometown, I’m writing to offer you some suggestions.
There are many places worth visiting. You can wander around the old town to enjoy its special scenery. Besides, the local museum is a good choice to learn about our history. You must try delicious local snacks, especially rice noodles.
Remember to wear comfortable shoes for long walks. It’s better to take a map or use navigation. Hope you will have an unforgettable trip here.
Yours,

At the meeting, Jamie said, “The cats don’t hurt anyone. We can help them together.” He told people how lovely and friendly these stray cats were. He also shared his idea that neighbors could take turns feeding and caring for them. Many listeners nodded in agreement. Some offered to take one cat home. Others promised to prepare food and build warm shelters for the cats. Warm discussion spread across the crowd. Even some kids volunteered to help look after the cats.
Moved by Jamie’s words and the support from the community, Officer Gruff had a change of heart. He decided to call off the stray cat control plan. Instead, he promised to work with neighbors to protect these cats. From then on, the stray cats still walked freely in the community, well-cared for by kind-hearted people. Jamie felt extremely proud. His courage and love for cats made a real difference.
