The Hanyi Festival, also known as Winter Clothing Festival, Ancestor Worship Festival (祭祖节), is an important traditional day of remembrance in China. It comes on the first day of the tenth lunar month every year, and it fell on November 20 in 2025. Together with Qingming Festival and Zhongyuan Festival, it is one of China’s three major “ghost (鬼) festivals”. On this day, people show love and remember their family members who passed away through serious and warm activities.
Its history goes back to the Zhou Dynasty. The Book of Songs (《诗经》) has a line “ninth month, winter clothing is granted” to remind people to prepare for cold weather early. Ancient people usually gave winter clothes to family members who had passed away. During this day, Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang held small ceremonies (仪式) at the court and gave warm red bean porridge to keep this tradition alive.
An old story makes the festival more meaningful. Lady Meng Jiang walked a long way to bring winter clothes to her husband who was building the Great Wall. When she found he had died, she burned the clothes to send her love to him. This story inspired (激励) people to burn paper clothes for their ancestors (祖先).
In the past, families made paper jackets and trousers with colored paper, decorated them and took them to graves (坟墓) with incense (香) and offerings (供品). Today, many people choose eco-friendly (环保的) ways such as online memorials, giving flowers or using natural things. Some regions have special foods on this day, like red bean rice and glutinous rice cakes that bring good luck.
More than a ceremony, the Hanyi Festival reflects (反映) Chinese values of honoring ancestors and remembering where we come from. It helps people keep a strong connection with the past and teaches us to treasure loved ones and carry on our traditions.

Longtaitou Festival
Longtaitou, also called the Dragon-Head-Raising Festival, is a traditional Chinese festival. It falls on the second day of the second lunar month every year. The name “Longtaitou” means “the dragon raises its head”. In Chinese culture, the dragon is a god of rain. This festival marks the start of spring and the farming season.
Longtaitou has a long history. It began in ancient China, when most people were farmers. At that time, farming was the most important part of people’s lives. Rain was very important for crops. So people saw the dragon as a symbol of rain. They believed that on this day, the dragon woke up from its winter sleep and brought rain and new life. An old saying goes, “On the second day of the second month, the dragon lifts its head.”
This festival has deep cultural meaning. It celebrates the rebirth of life and the connection between humans and nature. It also reminds people of their close ties with the land and farming traditions.
There are many interesting customs across China. One popular custom is getting a haircut. People believe that cutting hair in the first lunar month brings bad luck, so they wait until this day to do it. A haircut on Longtaitou is thought to bring good luck for the whole year. Food traditions are also special. People eat dragon-named food. For example, noodles are called “dragon’s beard”, dumplings are “dragon’s ears”, spring rolls are “dragon’s scales”, and popcorn is “dragon seeds”.
Today, Chinese people still celebrate this festival with joy. Some old customs have changed, but many are kept. The festival mixes old traditions with new ideas. It shows the vitality (活力) of Chinese culture.

I’m glad that you’ll make a video about Chinese traditional festivals. My favorite festival is the Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year. It usually comes in January or February.
During the festival, families get together to have a big dinner. We eat dumplings and delicious food, and children can get lucky money from elders. It is special because it means family reunion and a new start for everyone. People visit relatives and say “Happy New Year”.
I think it is a good chance to show Chinese culture. I hope your video will be very popular.
Yours,

A.A day for building the Great Wall.

19.文章第三段:“The Yi people used to celebrate the festival as a way to drive away all the bad things and ask for a good harvest.”表格中空格后有and asking, and连接并列成分,前后形式需要保持一致,asking是动名词,所以drive away也要变为动名词形式,位于句首首字母大写,因此应填“Driving away”。

Dear Tyler,
I’m glad that you’ll make a video about Chinese traditional festivals.
