When I was very young, people in our village lived by planting fruit trees. My grandmother always took me to the orchard (果园) on the hill. At that time, they had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill to halfway up the hill. Even though we worked so hard, the production level of fruit was still low because it was short of water there.
One day, two young men led a group of workers to our village. They came and learned about the difficulties we faced. “Who are they?” I asked. “They are good men from our government,” my grandma replied. Later, canals and other projects began to be built in my village.
Shortly afterwards, I moved to another city for my junior high school. The only reason I ever came back to my hometown was my grandmother.
One day, my family and I made time to return. We were surprised because everything had changed. The canal ran past every orchard so villagers didn’t have to go up and down the hill anymore. The river was now so clean that fish swam happily in it. When we arrived home, my grandma took out some fresh pears and apples. She told us that after the water conservation project (水利工程) was completed,a policy (政策) was made to encourage more people to increase the fruit production with clean water in the river.
Thank those good men who have devoted themselves to the development of our countryside.
Nowadays, people work hard to live in a big city. However, we should not forget our hometowns.
23. In the past, what troubled the villagers most?
A. They suffered from natural disasters.
B. It was not convenient to go up the hill.
C. They could only grow fruit trees.
D. There wasn’t enough water in the orchard.
24. The good men came and offered help probably because of _______.
A. the villagers’ suggestions B. the government’s support
C. a school’s practical activity D. a company’s engineering plan
25. Why did the writer leave his/her hometown?
A. For better education. B. For his/her grandmother.
C. For better work. D. For a convenient life.
26. What can we infer from the text?
A. The grandmother doesn’t like to live in the city.
B. The village is a place of interest for tourists now.
C. There will be more fruit production in the village.
D. More people like to work in the countryside nowadays.

Tu Youyou, a famous Chinese pharmacologist (药理学家), is best known for discovering artemisinin (青蒿素), a life-saving medicine for malaria (疟疾). Born in 1930 in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, she was a quiet and hard-working student who loved reading books. In 1951, she studied at Peking University Medical School.
In the 1960s, malaria was a serious disease that killed many people around the world. Scientists everywhere had tried and failed to find a cure. In 1969, Tu Youyou was asked to lead a team to discover a drug for this illness. Her team reviewed old Chinese medicine books and talked to experienced doctors. They studied over 2,000 ancient recipes and finally found a useful clue in a book from the 4th century. It said that sweet wormwood could treat fevers.
However, the usual way of heating the plant destroyed its active part. To solve this problem, Tu Youyou designed a new method using a low-temperature ether extraction. It was a challenging process, and the team faced many difficulties, but they never gave up. To make sure it was safe, Tu even volunteered to test the extract on herself. Finally, in 1972, they succeeded in making artemisinin, which has since saved millions of lives.
For her great achievement, Tu Youyou was awarded the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. She once said, “Every scientist dreams of doing something that can help the world.” Her hard work, courage, and dedication have made her a national hero and an inspiration to us all.
27. What made Tu Youyou’s team turn to ancient books for help?
A. They were interested in Chinese history.
B. Scientists around the world had failed to find a cure for malaria.
C. Peking University asked them to study traditional medicine.
D. They found a 4th-century book about sweet wormwood.
28. Why did Tu Youyou use a low-temperature method to process sweet wormwood?
A. Because the book from the 4th century told her to do so.
B. Because she wanted to be different from other scientists.
C. Because the high-temperature way made the active part fail.
D. Because low temperature was easier for her small team to manage.
29. What can we infer from the fact that Tu Youyou tested the drug on herself?
A. She couldn’t find any volunteers to help her.
B. She was very confident it would work perfectly.
C. The hospital didn’t have enough money for animals.
D. She had a strong sense of responsibility and courage.
30. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A. To explain why malaria is a dangerous disease.
B. To describe how ancient Chinese medicine works.
