The Stories of Sahara, 1967, by Sanmao The book narrates the author’s simple but adventurous life in the Sahara Desert, which seems a desolate and dull place. Lotus, 2006 by Annbaby This novel set in Xizang, tells three people’s stories, each with their unique characteristics. Whose book could be the most suitable for your trip to Germany? A. Jack Kerouac’s. B. Milan Kundera’s. C. Sanmao’s. D. Annbaby’s. 3. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text? A. To advertise four travel guidebooks. B. To introduce four novels about travelling. C. To arouse readers’interest in reading books. D. To recommend four books you can take on your trip. B I work with Volunteers for Wildlife, a rescue and education organization at Bailey Arboretum in Locust Valley. Trying to help injured, displaced or sick creatures can be heartbreaking; survival is never certain. However, when it works, it is simply beautiful. I got a rescue call from a woman in Muttontown. She had found a young owl(猫头鹰) on the ground. When I arrived, I saw a 2-to 3-week-old owl. It had already been placed in a carrier for safety. I examined the chick(雏鸟) and it seemed fine. If I could locate the nest, I might have been able to put it back, but no luck. My next work was to construct a nest and anchor it in a tree. The homeowner was very helpful. A wire basket was found. I put some pine branches into the basket to make this nest safe and comfortable. I placed the chick in the nest, and it quickly calmed down. Now all that was needed were the parents, but they were absent. I gave the homeowner a recording of the hunger screams of owl chicks. These advertise the presence of chicks to adults; they might also encourage our chick to start calling as well. I gave the owner as much information as possible and headed home to see what news the night might bring. A nervous night to be sure, but sometimes the spirits of nature smile on us all! The homeowner called to say that the parents had responded to the recordings. I drove over and saw the chick in the nest looking healthy and active. And it was accompanied in the nest by the greatest sight of all — LUNCH! The parents had done their duty and would probably continue to do so. 4. What is unavoidable in the author’s rescue work according to paragraph 1? A. Efforts made in vain. B. Getting injured in his work. C. Feeling uncertain about his future. D. Creatures forced out of their homes. 5. Why was the author called to Muttontown? A. To rescue a woman. B. To take care of a woman. C. To look at a baby owl. D. To cure a young owl. 6. What made the chick calm down? A. A new nest. B. Some food. C. A recording. D. Its parents. 7. How would the author feel about the outcome of the event? A. It’s unexpected. B. It’s beautiful. C. It’s humorous. D. It’s discouraging. C Getting hugged by someone you care about can be a wonderfully encouraging experience. Research has shown that hugs can strengthen our social connections, improve our emotional state and reduce feelings of loneliness and sadness. They can even help to lower stress levels and improve our health. Unluckily, not everyone has the chance to receive hugs whenever they need them. So, how can this problem be solved? One idea that scientists have suggested is developing social robots that can hug people. These robots could probably offer lonely people the positive benefits of getting hugged without the need to know a person who hug them. However, creating a hug robot that is well received by people and leads to positive feelings and reduced stress is no simple task. For example, if the robot is too large or has a design like something intimidating, people may feel uneasy about hugging it. Therefore, it is important for researchers to carry out further studies to ensure that hug robots are designed in a way that supports acceptance and comfort. A recent study published in International Journal of Social Robotics focused on the development of Moffully-Ⅱ, a newly developed hug robot. It looks like a large, human-shaped teddy bear and stands at two meters tall. During a hug, it is able to move its arms and perform different gestures (手势). Copying the actions that humans usually do during hugs, such as tapping someone on the back, is necessary for making the hug feel real. During the study, volunteers who received hugs from Moffully-Ⅱ showed a preference for hugs with gestures over those without gestures. They sensed the robot as friendlier and safer when it performed gestures, and they found the hugs to be more enjoyable in general. While some people may feel uncomfortable with the idea of hugging a robot instead of a human, hug robots show possibilities for improving the well-being of those who are short of hugs. This includes persons in nursing homes who may benefit from the comforting effects of hugs, even if they are provided by a robot. 8. What is one of the possible benefits of receiving hugs? A. Increasing loneliness. B. Lowering emotional state. C. Controlling social connections. D. Reducing stress and improving health. 9. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “intimidating” in paragraph 3? A. terrible B. cool C. friendly D. convenient 10. What can we learn about Moffully-Ⅱ according to the study? A. It is as small as a common teddy bear. B. Volunteers liked its hugs with gestures better. C. It can talk to volunteers while hugging them. D. Most volunteers felt uneasy when hugging it. 11. What is the best title for the passage? A. Are You Ready to Hug a Robot? B. Is It Strange for Robots to Give Hugs? C. Are Robots Good at Giving Comforting Hugs? D. Do Robot Hugs Feel the Same as Human Hugs? D There used to be four common life phases (阶段): childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age. Now, there are at least six: childhood, adolescence, odyssey, adulthood, active retirement and old age. Of the new ones, the least understood is odyssey, the decade of wandering that frequently occurs between adolescence and adulthood. During this decade, 20-somethings go to school and take breaks from school. They live with friends and they live at home. They fall in and out of love. They try one career and then try another. Their parents grow increasingly anxious. They understand that there’s bound to be a transition phase between student life and adult life. But when they look at their own grown children, they see the things are being delayed. They see that people in this age group are delaying marriage. They’re delaying having children. They’re delaying lifelong employment. Actually, this transitional period is a sensible response to new conditions. Young people grow up in tightly scheduled childhoods, but then graduate into a world characterized by uncertainty, diversity and searching. Old success methods don’t apply, new rules have not been formed and everything seems to give way to a less long-lasting type of itself. Marriage gives way to just living together. Having children gives way to keeping pets. The job market is changeable. The odyssey years are not about being lazy. There are fierce competitive pressures as vast numbers of people are chasing relatively few opportunities. Moreover, surveys show that people living through these years have highly traditional desires (they rate parenthood more highly than their own parents did). Actually, what we’re seeing is the creation of a new life phase, just as adolescence came into being a century ago. And as the new generational structure forms, social and economic entrepreneurs (企业家) will create new customs and rules. Someday people will look back and wonder at the vast social changes brought by the rising social group. 12. What is a feature of people in the odyssey phase? A. They welcome changes. B. They dislike living alone. C. They are in an unsettled state. D. They have the most job opportunities. 13. What leads to the appearance of odyssey? A. Outdated traditions. B. An uncertain adult world. C. Lack of success in childhoods. D. Newly made rules and approaches. 14. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about concerning the odyssey years? A. Its nature. B. Its effects. C. Its importance. D. Its development. 15. What is the author’s attitude towards the odyssey phase? A. Critical. B. Encouraging. C. Understanding. D. Doubtful. Green exercise is a term used to describe any type of physical exercise that takes place in a natural environment, rather than in a health club or gym.____16____Instead, it relies on the use of natural means of taking part in activities that improve strength and endurance with as little reliance on equipment as possible.  ____17____For example, some consider a truly natural exercise experience requires that the individual wear clothing only made from natural fibres. Books, brain food, can keep you company on your travel.(旅行就像阅读一样,是从繁忙的世界中解脱出来的一段清新的旅程。 D。 B I work with Volunteers for Wildlife, a rescue and education organization at Bailey Arboretum in Locust Valley. A 5. C 6. A 7. Trying to help injured, displaced or sick creatures can be heartbreaking; survival is never certain. 故选A。 She had found a young owl(猫头鹰) on the ground. When I arrived, I saw a 2-to 3-week-old owl可知,有人给作者打电话是因为有只小猫头鹰掉在地上了,作者赶过去看看情况。 I placed the chick in the nest, and it quickly calmed down可知,在作者把小猫头鹰放在窝里之后,它很快就安静下来,所以是窝让小猫头鹰安静下来的。故选A。 However, when it works, it is simply beautiful. B。 C Getting hugged by someone you care about can be a wonderfully encouraging experience. D 9. A 10. B 11. 根据第一段“Research has shown that hugs can strengthen our social connections, improve our emotional state and reduce feelings of loneliness and sadness. They can even help to lower stress levels and improve our health.(研究表明,拥抱可以加强我们的社会联系,改善情绪状态,减少孤独感和悲伤感。 根据第三段“For example, if the robot is too large or has a design like something intimidating, people may feel uneasy about hugging it.(例如,如果机器人体型太大或者设计得intimidating,人们拥抱它时会感到不安。)” 根据第五段“During the study, volunteers who received hugs from Moffully-Ⅱ showed a preference for hugs with gestures over those without gestures.(在这项研究中,被Moffully-Ⅱ拥抱的志愿者更喜欢带有手势的拥抱,而不是没有手势的拥抱。)” 根据第二段“One idea that scientists have suggested is developing social robots that can hug people.(科学家提出的一个设想是研发能够拥抱人类的社交机器人。)”以及最后一段“While some people may feel uncomfortable with the idea of hugging a robot instead of a human, hug robots show possibilities for improving the well-being of those who are short of hugs.(虽然有些人可能对拥抱机器人而不是人类这个想法感到不适应,但拥抱机器人为缺少拥抱的人改善幸福感提供了可能。)” A选项“Are You Ready to Hug a Robot?(你准备好拥抱机器人了吗?)” D There used to be four common life phases (阶段): childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age. D. Doubtful. C 13. B 14. A 15. 根据第二段“During this decade, 20-somethings go to school and take breaks from school. 根据第三段“Young people grow up in tightly scheduled childhoods, but then graduate into a world characterized by uncertainty, diversity and searching.(年轻人在紧凑的日程中长大,随后进入一个充满不确定、多样性和探索的世界)”可知,一个不确定的成人世界导致了奥德赛的出现。 根据第四段“The odyssey years are not about being lazy. There are fierce competitive pressures as vast numbers of people are chasing relatively few opportunities. Moreover, surveys show that people living through these years have highly traditional desires (they rate parenthood more highly than their own parents did). Actually, what we’re seeing is the creation of a new life phase, just as adolescence came into being a century ago.(奥德赛时代并非懒惰的表现。 根据最后一段“And as the new generational structure forms, social and economic entrepreneurs (企业家) will create new customs and rules. Someday people will look back and wonder at the vast social changes brought by the rising social group.(随着新一代结构的形成,社会和经济领域的创业者将创造新的习俗与规则。 Green exercise is a term used to describe any type of physical exercise that takes place in a natural environment, rather than in a health club or gym.____16____Instead, it relies on the use of natural means of taking part in activities that improve strength and endurance with as little reliance on equipment as possible.  ____17____For example, some consider a truly natural exercise experience requires that the individual wear clothing only made from natural fibres. Others consider barefoot (赤脚的) running or walking would be greener and thus be more desirable than running or walking with shoes.  A slightly different approach to green exercise puts more stress on fresh air, sunshine, and involvement with the natural world, rather than the equipment or clothing. ____18____. Similarly, climbing a mountain using standard equipment and protective clothing would also be considered green exercise.  Many consider green exercise helps to reconnect human beings with the natural world. The interaction with nature helps to lower people’s blood pressure, refresh their mind, and actually improve their self-esteem (自尊). ____19____Not everyone believes that green exercise is more beneficial than working out in a health club or gym. ____20____Meanwhile, the use of fitness devices may result in more challenging workouts, which help strengthen the heart and lungs in ways that more simplistic exercise in a natural setting would be difficult to manage. A. All forms of green exercise are good for you. B. A green gym uses as little equipment as possible. C. Spirits are also believed to be positively affected. D. Opinions on what truly green exercise means differ. E. So riding a bicycle in a forest can be called a type of green exercise. F. Besides, it usually doesn’t use fitness equipment that is normally found in a gym. G. Some point out that many health clubs are constructed to take advantage of natural light. F 17. D 18. E 19. C 20. 【16题详解】 根据上文“Green exercise is a term used to describe any type of physical exercise that takes place in a natural environment, rather than in a health club or gym.(绿色运动是一个术语,用于描述在自然环境中进行的任何类型的体育锻炼,而不是在健身俱乐部或健身房中)”可知,文章开头介绍绿色运动不同于在健身房的锻炼,空格处承上启下,以及后文的“Instead,”表明空格处的意义与后文相反。 【17题详解】 根据下文“For example, some consider a truly natural exercise experience requires that the individual wear clothing only made from natural fibres. Others consider barefoot (赤脚的) running or walking would be greener and thus be more desirable than running or walking with shoes. 【18题详解】 根据下文“Similarly, climbing a mountain using standard equipment and protective clothing would also be considered green exercise.(同样,使用标准设备和防护服爬山也将被视为绿色运动)”可知,此处介绍了什么样的锻炼会被视为绿色运动,由“Similarly”可知,空格处也是在介绍绿色运动的类型,而E项中“can be called a type of green exercise”与后文中的“also be considered a green exercise”结构一致,都是在介绍绿色运动的类型,所以E项“因此,在森林里骑自行车可以被称为一种绿色运动”符合语境。 【20题详解】 根据上文“Not everyone believes that green exercise is more beneficial than working out in a health club or gym.(并非所有人都认为绿色运动比在健身俱乐部或健身房锻炼更有益)”可知,该段在介绍另一种观点,指出使用健身器材锻炼也有好处,以及下文“Meanwhile, the use of fitness devices may result in more challenging workouts, which help strengthen the heart and lungs in ways that more simplistic exercise in a natural setting would be difficult to manage.(与此同时,健身设备的使用可能会导致更具挑战性的锻炼,这有助于增强心脏和肺部,而在自然环境中进行更简单的锻炼则很难管理)”说明使用健身器材有利于增强心肺功能。 My least favorite part was participating in sport meets, for I loved running by myself. When faced with running against fellow athletes, I was ____21____.
