Education in Ancient Greece
tablet and stylus
From the ages of seven to fifteen, boys in most ancient Greek city states went to school, where they learnt to read and write. In school, boys mostly wrote on a tablet (a wooden frame filled with beeswax 蜂蜡) using a stylus. When they wanted to start again, they held the wax near to the fire so it melted away (融化) what they had written. They also learnt about music and how to play an instrument, such as a lyre. In addition, boys were taught maths and physical skills.
The Olmecs passed their cacao knowledge to the Ancient Maya of Mexico and Central America, who made chocolate into a spicy drink used in ceremonies. Cacao (可可) started to become very valued. Later the Aztecs used cacao for trade and the cacao seeds as a form of money. In 1502, Christopher Columbus was the first European explorer to come into contact with cacao beans when he and his crew captured a trade ship. He supposed the beans were a type of almond (杏仁) and brought them back to Europe.

A famous story from New Book of Tang tells of Yang Yuhuan. She loved lychees (荔枝), a fruit that grew in faraway southern China and would easily go bad during transportation. To make her happy, Emperor Xuanzong ordered the riders to bring lychees to Chang’an. When the lychees finally arrived, they were still fresh. This makes people surprised at how fast the ancient postal (邮政的) system was!
In fact, China’s postal system started over 3,000 years ago in the Zhou Dynasty. Workers called “Xingfu” carried government orders and army messages. At that time, many places had institutions (机构) similar to post stations, but with different names. When the Qin State unified China, it made them use the same name—“You”, which is still used in China’s postal industry today.
While the postal system was well-developed during the Qin and Han dynasties, only the government could use it. Ordinary people had to depend on friends or family to send letters and other things.
During the Sui and Tang dynasties, the postal system took shape, centered around the capital and reaching all parts of the country. The poet Cen Shen wrote, “One post station after another, the post riders flow like stars, setting off from Xianyang in the morning and reaching the top of Mount Longshan in the evening.” This highly developed system allowed Yang to get her fresh lychees.
In the Ming Dynasty, “security escort agencies(镖局)” appeared. People paid them to protect their money and safety during travel.
However, in the mid-19th century, China had to open its doors to the West. This led to big changes in the postal industry. Finally, in 1913, the ancient postal system officially came to an end.
4.Why does the text begin with a story?
A.To introduce the topic. B.To explain a book.
C.To mention an emperor. D.To describe lychees.
5.What is the correct order of the following events?
①The postal system was mainly around the capital.
②Only the government could use the postal system.
③Many places had institutions similar to post stations.
A.①→②→③ B.①→③→② C.②→①→③ D.③→②→①

Have you noticed that the picture of Zhu Yuanzhang, the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty, looks different in today’s history textbooks? For many years, students saw him with a “shoehorn face”, which means he had a chin (下巴) that stuck out and a very long face. Now, the picture has changed to make him look more calm and handsome.
This change isn’t brand-new. The new picture has been in high school textbooks since 2019, and it was added to Grade 7 textbooks in 2024.
In history, Zhu is pictured with two different appearances. One is called the zhengxing portrait (肖像), showing him with a round face and calm expression. The other is the yixing portrait, showing a sticking-out chin, long face and many dark spots. Historians believe the zhengxing portrait is closer to how Zhu really looked. This idea is supported by family features, as his son, Zhu Di, also had a round face.
Why are there two types of portraits? Professor Jin Wen explains that the yixing portrait became popular because of ancient beliefs. People thought that if a ruler looked unusual, it was a sign from heaven, making them trust the ruler more. In fact, Zhu himself also encouraged this unusual image. Some studies suggest he did this to protect himself by not showing his real look.
Today, not only textbooks but also the portraits at the Ming Xiaoling Museum in Nanjing show the zhengxing portrait. Many visitors support this change. It is not only about making the emperor look better, but it also helps young people think more critically about history. They can have their own understanding and judgement.Meanwhile, using the correct pictures shows respect for historical characters and helps teach history correctly, said Professor Lin Wei from Zhejiang University.
7.Which of the following is TRUE according to paragraphs 1 and 2?
A.Zhu Yuanzhang was the second emperor of the Ming Dynasty.
B.The new picture has been in high school textbooks since 2019.
C.The change of Zhu Yuanzhang’s picture is a completely new thing.
D.Zhu Yuanzhang is the first emperor of the Qing Dynasty.
8.How is the passage organized?
A.Introduction→ Facts of two portraits→ Reasons→ Influence of the change.
B.Opinion→ Examples→ Conclusions.
C.Problem→ Ways to solve the problem.
D.Comparison between two different periods.
9.What does the underlined word “critically” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Understand quickly and use freely.
B.Follow blindly and accept fully.
C.Judge independently and never believe easily.
D.Learn carefully and remember for long.
10.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Zhu Yuanzhang liked the yixing portrait because it looked like his true appearance.
B.We should learn to think independently when we study history.
C.Most visitors in Ming Xiaoling Museum dislike the zhengxing portrait.
D.All old portraits of ancient rulers are not real.

While England’s Stonehenge is known for its mysterious stone circle, there is an even older place in Türkiye, called Göbekli Tepe. It is thought to be the world’s oldest temple, built around 12,000 years ago—about 6,000 years before Stonehenge.
Göbekli Tepe was discovered in the 1960s. It is made up of several big round spaces built with huge T-shaped stone blocks. Many of these blocks are cut with pictures of animals such as foxes, snakes, lions, and wild pigs. Unlike Stonehenge, these stones were not moved from far away; they were shaped directly from the nearby hills.
What amazes experts most is that Göbekli Tepe was built by hunter-gatherers (狩猎采集者)—people who did not yet farm or live in cities. This changes the old idea that large places to honor ancestors were only built after farming began. Göbekli Tepe makes us rethink history. Maybe building such places brought people together, which later led to farming.
The purpose of Göbekli Tepe remains unknown, just like Stonehenge. Some think it was an important place, used for special events, burials, or watching the sky. Others believe it was a meeting place for different groups to trade and tell stories.
Today, Göbekli Tepe is a protected World Heritage Site. It helps us rethink human history and shows that ancient people were more skilled and organized than we once believed. The site reminds us that human societies could achieve great things through cooperation long before the rise of cities or kingdoms.
11.What makes Göbekli Tepe special compared to Stonehenge?
A.It is a temple from England. B.It was built 6,000 years ago.
C.It is older than Stonehenge. D.It was built with huge stones.
12.What was a possible use of Göbekli Tepe according to the passage?
A.A hunting ground. B.A tourist site for visitors.
C.A palace for a king. D.A religious meeting place.
13.When was Göbekli Tepe discovered?
A.Around 12,000 years ago. B.In the 1960s.
C.6,000 years before Stonehenge. D.Long after farming began.
14.Which of the following is TRUE?
A.Hunter-gatherers were able to work together to finish big projects.
B.People have known the exact use of Göbekli Tepe for many years.
C.The stone blocks of Göbekli Tepe were transported from faraway places.
D.Large religious buildings could only appear after cities came into being.

① What comes to mind when you think of archaeologists? Are they as cool as the characters in some movies? Let’s discover the world of archaeologists.
② Find places. Historical treasures are often hidden underground. To find the right place for digging, archaeologists do surveys to search for signs of ancient sites (遗址), such as broken pieces of ancient tools. It’s hard work. They have to walk across the field in all kinds of weather. Besides, it takes a lot of experience and knowledge to tell an ordinary(普通的) rock from a stone tool.
③ Do research. Archaeologists spend a lot of time in the lab studying the discoveries. With modern technology, it is easier than ever to solve these mysteries. First, they find out the age of the things discovered. They also check human or animal bones to learn how they died and what they ate.
④ Repair and clean. Ancient objects can be damaged in different ways. Bowls and cups are often in pieces, and metal tools are usually covered with rust (铁锈). Before repairing them, archaeologists use X-rays to check the damage. They must be patient and careful so as not to damage their value.
⑤ Though the job can be very tiring or require working long hours in the lab, most archaeologists are proud of their work. It’s their hard work that has brought the lost treasures back to life.
15.What do archaeologists have to do when finding places?
A.They have to repair broken tools.
B.They have to study bones in the lab.
C.They have to ask local people for help.
D.They have to work in different weather conditions.
16.What will archaeologists do before repairing ancient objects?
A. They will find out how old the objects are.
B. They will use X-rays to check the damage.
C. They will clean the rust with modern machines.
D. They will study the bones of ancient animals.
17.Which is the right structure of the text? (①= Paragraph 1, ②= Paragraph 2, …)
A. B. C. D.

“Museum fever” swept across China during the National Day holiday in 2025. More than 120 million people visited museums and cultural places. 35% of them were teens. AI and digital tools have turned museums into interactive (互动式) playgrounds. Here, young visitors can touch history and feel new ideas by using them.
At Xi’an Museum, a digital art show called West Expo Treasures welcomed many young visitors. By waving a hand, they could make ancient bells ring and see a golden dragon “fly” out of the exhibits (展品). Here, teens spend about 47 minutes on average—twice as long as at normal exhibits.
Many museums became popular because teens can learn through play. Shanghai Museum is one of them. At Shanghai Museum’s “Archaeology Palace”, 56,000 teens tried digging for fossils (化石) and used microscopes (显微镜) to look at old objects. 92% said they learned more than in history class.
In Hangzhou’s Huatan Village, college students helped build a VR museum. There, 28 local teens used AI to design 120 exhibits in Song Dynasty style. The museum got 3,000 visits in 5 days.
These showed that “museum fever” is a cultural awakening. Technology showed teens more than exhibits—it showed them a deep sense of cultural belonging and pride. Powered by these experiences, Chinese youth are now ready to carry their culture into the future.

1.句意:任何人都会对岩石上艺术作品和雕刻的数量感到惊讶。

根据前文“before human beings knew how to read or write”可知,岩画出现在文字产生之前,before“在……之前”符合历史发展逻辑。with“随着”、by“通过”、after“在……之后”均与事实相反。
8.句意:在过去的几年里,张和他的团队一直在寻找岩画。
后文引用张先生的话“Sometimes, we spend a whole day and end up finding nothing”(有时我们花了一整天却一无所获),说明他们的工作性质是勘探和寻找,searching for“寻找”符合语境。setting up“建立”、discussing with“与……讨论”、worrying about“担心”均不符合野外考古工作的描述。

A.To introduce the topic. B.To explain a book.
C.To mention an emperor. D.To describe lychees.
5.What is the correct order of the following events?
①The postal system was mainly around the capital.
