The world lost 6.7 million hectares (公顷) of forest land in 2024, more than double the number of the year before. Forests are disappearing at a surprising speed. Every minute, an area of about 18 football fields is cleared from our planet. The worrying data comes from a study published on May 21, 2025, which was carried out by researchers from the University of Maryland in the US.
Forests play an important role on Earth. They take in carbon dioxide, offer home for thousands of wild plants and animals, and help keep the balance of our climate. However, human-caused activities and global warming are putting these valuable natural treasures in great danger.
About half of the forest loss came from wildfires. These fires are caused by both human activities and climate factors. Local people set fires to clear forest land for farming and raising animals. Once out of control, the fires will spread quickly across large areas, especially during extremely hot days. The year 2024 was recorded as the hottest year so far. Higher temperatures dried out trees and grass, making wildfires much easier to start and harder to put out.
The study paid special attention to South America. Rainforests there, such as the Amazon rainforest, are well-known as “the lungs of the Earth”. They are of great importance to all life on our planet. Unluckily, most of the recent forest loss took place in countries including Brazil and Bolivia. Large areas of rainforest are being destroyed year by year.
“It’s a global red alert (警告),” said Elizabeth Goldman, a co-director of World Resources Institute. “Forests are dying, and the whole world should hear the warning. It is also a call to action for every person who cares about a livable planet. Governments should make stronger rules to stop illegal tree-cutting. Ordinary people can also do small things, such as choosing eco-friendly products and spreading environmental ideas. Protecting forests is protecting our own future.”
4. How much forest was lost in 2023?
A. About 18 million hectares. B. More than 11 million hectares.
C. About 6 million hectares. D. Less than 3.35 million hectares.
5. What can we know from paragraph 2 and 3?
A. All the forest loss is caused by wildfires.
B. Wildfires are one main cause of forest loss.
C. It is easy to put out wildfires on extremely hot days.
D. Local people set fires just for fun.
6. What do Elizabeth Goldman’s words mean?
A. Some countries need to plant more forests.
B. The forests mean a lot to a livable planet.
C. It’s time for us to take action to protect the planet.
D. Forest fires are a serious problem.
7. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. Climate change led to forest fires
B. A serious warning: Our forests are disappearing
C. Humans have done a lot to protect nature
D. About 18 football fields lost every minute

Nowadays, billions of people have smart phones. Charging phones is part of our daily life. But as time goes by, batteries (电池) do not work well. A phone that could last a full day may suddenly need charging (充电) all the time.
The problem is often the way we charge our phones. Today’s smart phones use lithium-ion (锂离子) batteries. They can work for about 500 charge cycles, or two to three years, before their capacity (容量) drops. Unluckily, most phone batteries are hard to replace. When the battery breaks down, many people buy a new phone. This creates lots of waste. To solve the problem, the European Union has passed a law. It asks phone makers to produce phones with easily-removed batteries by 2027.
What can we do right now to keep phone batteries healthy? One common mistake is always charging the phone to 100%. Keeping it fully charged puts much stress on the battery and shortens its life. Experts suggest we keep battery levels between 20% and 80%.
High temperature also hurts batteries. Using the phone while charging makes it hot and speeds up battery wear. If you charge your phone at night, place it on a cool, hard surface. Never cover it with a blanket (毯子), or it will easily overheat. Besides, avoid cheap chargers (充电器), for they may make the phone too hot. It is better to use the factory-made charger.
Small changes in charging habits can make a big difference. They help batteries last longer and cut down waste.
8. How does the writer lead in the topic at the beginning of the passage?
A. By telling a story. B. By asking a question.
C. By giving an example. D. By describing a problem.
9. Why do many people buy a new phone when the battery breaks down?
A. Because the new phones are more popular.
B. Because the batteries are not easy to replace.
C. Because changing the battery will create waste.
D. Because new phones are cheaper than new batteries.
10. Which of the following can stop your phone from overheating (过热)?
① Playing videos on the phone while charging.
② Placing the phone on a desk while charging.
③ Using the charger that came with the phone.
④ Putting the phone under a blanket while charging.
A. ①② B. ②③ C. ①④ D. ③④
11. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To introduce the history of lithium-ion batteries.
B. To encourage people to protect the environment.
C. To teach how to make our phone battery last longer.
D. To show the importance of smart phones in our daily lives.
D
In 2026, there is a new trend (流行趋势) on foreign social media (媒体): Becoming Chinese. This is different from the earlier trends about China.
In the past, people around the world mostly focused on simple Chinese symbols, like Chinese food. Now, people from other countries pay attention to Chinese living habits.
At first, a Chinese-American girl made a video and helped start the trend. Thousands of foreign people learned about some Chinese living habits through it. Later, many of them took up the habit of drinking hot water and practicing baduanjin.
The trend became popular around the New Year. At this time of year, many people want to work on self-improvement, especially on their physical health. This makes health tips from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) popular online. For example, get enough sleep to protect “energy”, avoid walking on cold floors, bring a bottle of hot water, and so on. These simple tips offer people useful ways to reduce the risk of illness, allowing them to rethink their own ways of life.
Now, more foreigners are changing from just observing (观察) Chinese culture from a distance to being closely connected with it. They are interested in and excited about putting Chinese living habits into practice.
Chinese living habits are part of the traditional Chinese way of life. Modern people’s lives are always full of challenges and pressure. More and more people are looking for helpful ways to deal with that. The Chinese way of life — such as order, inner (内心的) peace, and the balance between yin and yang — can bring people some peace of mind.
12. How is the new trend different from earlier ones?
A. It is more popular in America.
B. It focuses on Chinese living habits.
C. It is mainly about Chinese food.
D. It encourages people to move to China.
13. What can we learn from paragraph 3 to paragraph 5?
A. Putting Chinese habits into practice is difficult.
B. Foreign people improve their health with TCM.
C. The trend was only popular over the New Year.
D. Foreigners stopped observing Chinese culture.
14. Why does the traditional Chinese way of life attract people?
A. It plays a role in dealing with stress.
B. It pushes people to give up their own habits.
C. It teaches people to connect with each other.
D. It helps people learn about Chinese history.
15. What is the best title for the passage?
A. How to put TCM tips into practice
B. The life of a Chinese-American girl
C. A new trend: living like Chinese people
D. Why Chinese traditions are popular now

Besides, following group hobbies or joining clubs helps build social connections. 19 Whether it’s a music club, a local sports team, or a reading group, making friends through shared hobbies can bring you great joy.
What’s more, depending on the hobby, you can also experience physical benefits. Activities like playing the piano or painting are excellent for helping your hands and eyes work together better. 20 These physical benefits, in turn, give you better health and a sense of achievement.

The 13-year-old boy has shown interest in insects since long before he started school. I’ve recorded about 60 different kinds of insects just at Tanglang Mountain Country Park near my home.” Zhang said. Now Zhang is able to identify over 1,000 insect species.
With his mother’s help, Zhang posted his first video about insects five years ago. In the video, he put two kinds of stick insects (竹节虫) on his hands and explained what they look like, where they live, and how they protect themselves.
Many people online liked the video, which made him excited to share more insect facts.
