Recently, a low-budget (低预算的) Chinese film named Dear You (also known as Love Letters to Grandma) has become an unexpected box office hit. Filmed almost entirely in the Chaoshan dialect (方言), this moving drama has touched the hearts of millions, especially young viewers.
The story is about a family discovery. A grandson travels to Thailand to find out why his grandfather left China many years ago and never returned. There, he uncovers a touching secret: a Thai-Chinese woman had been secretly writing letters and sending money to his grandmother in his grandfather’s name for 18 years to keep a promise.
In Chinese history, these letters with money sent by Chinese emigrants (侨民) are called Qiaopi (侨批). For families left behind, they were both financial support and an emotional connection.
The film has received high praise for its real social background. It beautifully shows Chaoshan traditions, such as Gongfu tea and the colorful Yingge Dance. However, what really makes audiences cry is the strength of the women in the story. They showed deep-rooted loyalty and love that could transcend (跨越) oceans.
Today, many young people live a fast-paced life and often communicate through text messages. This movie encourages them to slow down and listen to the stories of older generations. As one viewer said, “It reminds us that behind every elderly person, there was once a story of youth, passion, and deep love.”

A. The beautiful scenery. B. The fast-paced lifestyle.
C. The difficulty of learning. D. The spirit of the women.
35. What is the main message the movie wants to tell young people today?
A. To move back to hometowns. B. To perform the dance better.

Two Chinese Mathematicians Make History at the 2026 Fields Medal Ceremony
Known as “the Nobel Prize of mathematics”, the 2026 Fields Medals were announced on July 23 at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Philadelphia. Four young scientists got this world’s top prize for math.
Two winners, Deng Yu and Wang Hong, are Chinese and have caught great attention from media around the world. This is an important moment that has never happened before. For the first time, Chinese mathematicians won this award, ending Western countries’ control of this famous prize for many years. Both finished their college studies at Peking University and then went abroad to continue their research.
Given by the International Mathematical Union every four years, the Fields Medal is only open to scientists under 40. Every winner gets two official prizes: a 14-karat gold medal with a picture of Archimedes and 15,000 Canadian dollars. The prize honors important new discoveries in different areas of mathematics.
Deng Yu works as a professor at the University of Chicago. He showed great talent in math when he was young. He won a gold medal in the International Mathematical Olympiad during high school and studied for his bachelor’s degree at Peking University. His important research made great progress on a key problem in Hilbert’s Sixth Problem. He created strict mathematical models to connect tiny molecular movements and large fluid motion, linking pure mathematics and physics.
At the same time, Wang Hong is 35, the youngest winner. She entered Peking University when she was 16. Now she is a Silver Professor at New York University’s Courant Institute. She solved the three-dimensional Kakeya conjecture, a problem no one could work out for a hundred years. It sits at the crossing of harmonic analysis and geometric measure theory. She said her success came from teamwork. Her mathematical ideas help create new developments in cryptography and computer science.
The fact that they both studied at Peking University for college shows that China’s basic mathematics education has made great progress. Their historic success broadens worldwide top-level mathematical research and encourages young people to study basic science subjects.
36. What can we know about the Fields Medal from Paragraph 3?
A. It is given to old and experienced math experts.
B. It rewards creative and valuable math research results.
C. Winners can only get money as their prize.
D. It is held once every five years.
37. What can we learn about Wang Hong’s success?
A. She finished her research all by herself.
B. Her study at a foreign university was the only key to her success.
C. Teamwork played an important role in her achievement.
D. She solved the century-old problem when she was 16.
38. What can we infer from the two mathematicians’ learning experiences?
A. Studying abroad is unnecessary for math learners.
B. Young people can only succeed by solving old math problems.
C. Math talent is the only secret of great researchers.
D. Basic college education in China can lay a solid foundation for top math research.
39. What influence will their achievements bring?
A. More teenagers may become interested in basic science study.
B. All difficult math problems will be solved soon.
C. China’s math education will become perfect overnight.
D. Western math research will stop developing.
40. What is the main idea of the passage?

There are many inventions that have caused great changes in the world. Here is a short introduction of the maglev train (磁悬浮). The history of the maglev train started in the beginning of the 1900s. The American Robert Goddard and the French Emile Bachelet came up with the idea of frictionless (无摩擦的) trains. But scientists didn’t succeed in making it at that time.
About 60 years later, the Japanese started their research on maglev transportation. After many years of experiments, the Japanese began to build their first line 7km in 1975, and finished it in 1977. Many test runs started in July 1977 with a speed of 517 km/h. In 1990, Japan built the Yamanashi Maglev test line. This test line was 42.8 km long and the first running test was held in 1997.
The Germans also started research on the maglev train in the early 1970s. It took them ten years to make the first track (轨道) model. In 1993, the longest nonstop test running was 1,674 km. That same year the speed reached 450 km/h.
China finished a 30-km-long maglev train line in Shanghai in 2003. This is the first commercial (商业的) maglev train line in the world. Although this project cost over 1 billion dollars, we should feel proud of it.
