Whether you’re visiting from afar, or are seeking to explore the country you call home, these spots are must-sees. Kluane National Park Home to Canada’s tallest peak (高峰), this giant national park in the western Yukon can be seen from the sky, aboard a helicopter or an airplane equipped with skis. Or, even better, hike it using the park’s vast network of paths — you could walk for days without seeing another person. Long Beach, Tofino Named “the best surf town in North America” by Outside magazine, Tofino, a beautiful beach town located on the wild west coast of Vancouver Island, has, despite its relatively remote location, been drawing surfers, nature-lovers and those with wandering souls for years. Located just south of town, Long Beach is an almost mystical place, a broad and long beach of great waves and breathtaking beauty. 1. Where can you find a land of mountains, lakes and wildlife? A. Kluane National Park.  B. Banff and Lake Louise. C. Gros Morne National Park.  D. Long Beach, Tofino. 2. What is special about Gros Morne National Park? A. It has large hiking paths.  B. It is away from the coast. C. It packs species variety.  D. It has various landforms. 3. What can you do in the best surf town in North America? A. Engage in water sports.  B. Read Outside magazine. C. Draw pictures for surfers.  D. Wander in a unique park. B It’s funny how some memories disappear slowly, yet others stay with you forever. I don’t remember every detail of that night, but I do remember the fear in my mother’s voice. It was a cold December evening when the fire broke out. I was doing my homework in the living room while my little brother, Ben, played with his toy cars on the floor. We didn’t notice anything at first — not until the smoke alarm rang through the house. Mom ran in from the kitchen, her face pale. “Get outside, now!” she shouted. We rushed to the front door, but the hallway was already filled with thick, black smoke. It was impossible to see more than a metre ahead. Mom grabbed Ben and told me to hold her hand. I couldn’t breathe. Every cough felt like my chest was burning. We crawled along the floor, where the air was slightly clearer, until we finally reached the front door and fell into the freezing night air. We lost almost everything — furniture, photographs, my books, Ben’s toys. But we were alive. That was what mattered. The Red Cross gave us blankets, warm clothes and a place to stay for a few nights. Friends and strangers donated what they could. I learned that kindness often appears when you least expect it. The weeks that followed were hard. We moved into a small flat while our house was rebuilt. I had to change schools, make new friends, and adjust to a life with far fewer possessions. Sometimes I felt angry and sad. But Mom always said, “We still have each other. That’s more than enough.” Gradually, I realized that I would rather lose everything again than lose the people I love. Now, a year later, we are finally back. The house looks different, but it feels like ours again. We still don’t have all the things we lost, but we have new memories to make. And every clear night, we look up at the stars and remember that even after the darkest moments, light always finds a way back. 4. What can we learn about the author from the first two paragraphs? A. His toy car was burnt.  B. His house caught fire. C. He feared Mom’s voice.  D. He hit the smoke alarm. 5. What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A. Mom saved Ben on her own.  B. The fire burned the author’s chest. C. Thick smoke damaged the hallway.  D. The family struggled to escape the fire. 6. What can be inferred about the author after the fire? A. He valued family more.  B. He donated his old books. C. He wanted a bigger house.  D. He refused new memories. 7. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Light After the Darkest Night  B. Memories of Burned Furniture C. Kindness from Warm Strangers  D. A Night Full of Heavy Smoke C We all know exercise is good for us, but not everyone has the time, motivation, or mobility for regular workouts. Researchers are looking for activities that offer the most benefit with the least time and effort. A new study in BMJ Open Sport & Exercise Medicine, led by Canterbury Christ Church University, found that isometric (等长的) exercise training (IET) can reduce blood pressure with just a couple of workouts a week. IET involves holding a position for a few minutes, such as wall squats (蹲), planks, or hand grip exercises. These are simple, quick, and require no equipment, and suit people who can’t manage longer workouts. The study selected 100 adults averaging 37 years old, who were not meeting minimum exercise guidelines and had normal to high-normal systolic blood pressure. For four weeks, 80 participants did wall squats three times weekly while the other 20 acted as a control group. For the four weeks after that, the exercise participants were asked to keep up the three weekly workouts, or drop down to two, one, or none. After four weeks, the exercise group’s systolic blood pressure dropped by an average of 9.45 mmHg compared to controls. Those who continued three workouts weekly for eight weeks saw an average drop of 13.73 mmHg. Those who reduced to one or two workouts had a drop of about 6.5–7 mmHg, while those who stopped after four weeks returned to previous levels. Researchers recommend three workouts per week for optimal blood pressure reductions. Systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial pressure all improved significantly after four weeks. The exercises may relax and widen blood vessels and calm the nervous system, but longer-term studies are needed. The team suggests extending IET beyond two months may lead to structural changes, making benefits last longer. This is another reminder that you don’t always need a lot of activity to improve your health. 8. Why is IET recommended for some people? A. It works better than regular workouts.  B. It is time-saving and equipment-free. C. It suits people with low blood pressure.  D. It helps build long-time workout habits. 9. How do the researchers conduct the study? A. By grouping the participants.  B. By surveying adults’ exercise habits. C. By comparing different exercise types.  D. By changing participants’ daily lifestyles. 10. What does the underlined word “optimal” in paragraph 5 most probably mean? A. Fixed.  B. Quick.  C. Simple.  D. Best. 11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To advise giving up long workouts.  B. To prove benefits of daily exercise. C. To introduce a beneficial exercise.  D. To warn people of blood pressure risks. D Switzerland’s glaciers (冰川) lost more than 5% of their ice in 2026, marking another year of rapid drop. The loss reflects a wider global trend: Glaciers around the world have been shrinking (缩小) at increasingly rapid rates, a phenomenon scientists link directly to global warming. Matthias Huss leads GLAMOS, Switzerland’s glacier monitoring network. The organization released the report together with the Swiss Academy of Sciences. Every summer, Huss travels high into mountains to measure ice fields. His long-term studies have recorded continuous ice loss, reaching a record 6% in 2022. “They are completely without ice,” he said. “It’s a moon landscape that is dry and dead. There are some little pieces, some ice blocks still lying around and melting there on the hot rocks.” Alpine plants now grow in former glacier zones. The 5.5% ice loss in 2026 is a little lower than the 2022 record simply because more winter snow covered the ice. However, Switzerland’s largest glaciers, Rhône and Aletsch, suffered record ice loss this year. Called Europe’s water towers, glaciers store winter snow and supply meltwater to major rivers including the Rhine and Danube, supporting food production and transport. This summer, low river levels stopped goods transport and forced some nuclear power plants to close temporarily. In the past 50 years, 1,200 small glaciers have disappeared. Once glaciers disappear, European farmers will face severe drought. Glaciers and alpine permafrost hold mountains stable (稳固的). Their loss raises risks of landslides and floods. Last year, a glacier broke and destroyed Blatten village. Villagers were moved away but now still live in temporary housing. A similar disaster near Nepal’s border caused floods killing at least 1,400 people. Huss thinks climate change can cause such disasters. He rejects climate deniers. “Look at them, it’s not a lie. The evidence is clear, and it’s been clear for decades. And I think many people have understood that it’s time to act now.” Without action, all Swiss glaciers may disappear by 2100. 12. What do we know about Switzerland’s glaciers in 2026? A. Some big glaciers suffered less.  B. 6% of ice disappeared that year. C. They lost the most ice in history.  D. They kept getting smaller rapidly. 13. What does glacier loss imply? A. It helps farmers grow plants.  B. It prevents natural disasters. C. It does harm to human life.  D. It cuts down local rainfall. 14. What is Matthias Huss’s attitude toward climate change? A. Doubtful.  B. Concerned.  C. Uncaring.  D. Confused. 15. What is the main idea of the text? A. Glacier loss harms humans.  B. Glaciers supply water to rivers. C. Glaciers keep shrinking rapidly.  D. Disasters strike European areas. How to Increase Your Self-Confidence If you’re struggling with being confident, you’re not alone. ____16____, and that’s what we’re here for. He got hit in the eye while practising table tennis and realised the sport was not suitable for him. The following week, Stan limped (瘸着走) out of the kitchen. He had tripped over a hurdle and hurt his ankle, so hurdling was out of the question for him. Another week passed. When Dad got back from shopping, Stan’s arm was in a sling (悬带). A Night Full of Heavy Smoke 【答案】4. B 5. D 6. A 7. 根据第二段中“It was a cold December evening when the fire broke out. I was doing my homework in the living room while my little brother, Ben, played with his toy cars on the floor. We didn’t notice anything at first — not until the smoke alarm rang through the house.(那是十二月一个寒冷的夜晚,火灾突发。我正在客厅写作业,弟弟本在地上玩玩具汽车。起初我们什么都没察觉 —— 直到烟雾报警器在屋里响起。)”可知,作者家着火了。 【5题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第三段“We rushed to the front door, but the hallway was already filled with thick, black smoke. It was impossible to see more than a metre ahead. Mom grabbed Ben and told me to hold her hand. I couldn’t breathe. Every cough felt like my chest was burning. We crawled along the floor, where the air was slightly clearer, until we finally reached the front door and fell into the freezing night air.(我们冲向前门,可走廊已经布满浓密的黑烟。前方一米开外就看不清东西。妈妈一把抱住本,叫我拉住她的手。我喘不上气,每一次咳嗽都像胸口在灼烧。我们贴着空气稍微清新一点的地面匍匐前进,终于摸到前门,跌进冰冷的夜色里。)”可知,本段主要讲一家人艰难逃离火灾。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。根据第五段中“Gradually, I realized that I would rather lose everything again than lose the people I love.(渐渐地,我意识到我宁愿再次失去一切,也不愿失去我爱的人。)” 根据最后一段中“And every clear night, we look up at the stars and remember that even after the darkest moments, light always finds a way back.(每一个晴朗的夜晚,我们仰望星空,记住即使在最黑暗的时刻过后,光明总会回来。)” C We all know exercise is good for us, but not everyone has the time, motivation, or mobility for regular workouts. B 9. A 10. D 11. 根据文章第二段中“These are simple, quick, and require no equipment, and suit people who can’t manage longer workouts.(这些运动简单、快捷、不需要设备,适合无法进行较长时间锻炼的人)”可知,等长运动训练(IET)省时且不需要任何器材,因此被推荐给部分人群。 根据文章第三段中“For four weeks, 80 participants did wall squats three times weekly while the other 20 acted as a control group.(在四周的时间里,80名参与者每周做三次靠墙静蹲,而另外20名作为对照组)”可知,研究人员是通过将参与者分为实验组和对照组(即分组的方式)来进行这项研究的。 根据第四段中“Those who continued three workouts weekly for eight weeks saw an average drop of 13.73 mmHg. Those who reduced to one or two workouts had a drop of about 6.5–7 mmHg, while those who stopped after four weeks returned to previous levels.(每周坚持三次锻炼八周的人平均下降了13.73毫米汞柱。 D Switzerland’s glaciers (冰川) lost more than 5% of their ice in 2026, marking another year of rapid drop. D 13. C 14. B 15. 根据第一段“Switzerland’s glaciers (冰川) lost more than 5% of their ice in 2026, marking another year of rapid drop.(瑞士冰川在2026年失去了超过5%的冰,标志着又一个快速下降的年份)”可知,瑞士冰川在2026年继续快速缩小。 根据第四段“This summer, low river levels stopped goods transport and forced some nuclear power plants to close temporarily. In the past 50 years, 1,200 small glaciers have disappeared. Once glaciers disappear, European farmers will face severe drought.(今年夏天,河水水位过低导致货物运输中断,迫使一些核电站暂时关闭。过去50年中,已有1200个小型冰川消失。一旦冰川消融,欧洲农民将面临严重的干旱)”可知,冰川流失导致河流枯竭、影响货物运输、迫使核电站关闭、引发农业干旱;根据第五段“Glaciers and alpine permafrost hold mountains stable (稳固的). Their loss raises risks of landslides and floods. Last year, a glacier broke and destroyed Blatten village. Villagers were moved away but now still live in temporary housing. A similar disaster near Nepal’s border caused floods killing at least 1,400 people.(冰川和高山永久冻土使山体保持稳定,其消失会增加滑坡和洪水的风险。去年,一座冰川崩塌摧毁了布拉滕村,村民被迫撤离,如今仍居住在临时住所中。尼泊尔边境附近曾发生类似灾难,引发洪水,造成至少1400人死亡)”可知,冰川流失增加山体滑坡和洪水风险、摧毁村庄甚至致人死亡等。由此可知,冰川流失对人类生活和生命财产造成了严重危害。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Huss thinks climate change can cause such disasters. He rejects climate deniers. “Look at them, it’s not a lie. The evidence is clear, and it’s been clear for decades. And I think many people have understood that it’s time to act now.” Without action, all Swiss glaciers may disappear by 2100.(Huss认为气候变化会引发这类灾害,他反对否认气候变化的人。 How to Increase Your Self-Confidence If you’re struggling with being confident, you’re not alone. ____16____, and that’s what we’re here for. He shook his head. “Not right now. I’ll go when I’m old enough.” “That’s an ambitious goal,” Mom commented. “You will make it if you put your mind to it,” Dad encouraged him. “I believe I can,” Stan said confidently. “I’ve studied how athletes become top players. It calls for constant practice and strong determination. If I keep practising until I reach perfection, I won’t fail.” “Sounds like a practical plan,” Mom said, nodding. “Which sport will you take up?” “I haven’t decided yet,” Stan answered excitedly. A week later, Emma returned home from her piano lesson and found Stan on the couch with an ice pack on his face. Stan told his father that throwing the discus (铁饼) was far beyond his ability. He sank into silence, confused about where his real strengths lay. Paragraph 1: Dad noticed Stan’s low spirits. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Gradually, Stan found what suited him. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Dad noticed Stan’s low spirits. He sat down beside Stan gently and told him that top athletes did not succeed overnight. It was normal to try different sports and fail at first. He suggested Stan stop rushing to choose a sport and pay more attention to what made him feel joyful instead of what he thought would win him an Olympic medal. Hearing this, Stan lifted his head slowly. He thought about all the activities he had tried and wondered what he truly enjoyed doing. Gradually, Stan found what suited him. He discovered he loved running long distances. Every morning, he practised jogging steadily without feeling tired or upset. He kept training patiently and made small progress day by day. He still held his Olympic dream in heart. He learned that the best goal was not to be perfect right away, but to keep trying at something that fit him. Stan finally understood that true determination meant sticking to the right thing for himself. 词汇激活 行为类 ①抬起头:lift one’s head/raise one’s head ②坚持:stick to/‌persist in/‌persevere in 情绪类 ①愉快的:joyful/delighted ②决心:determination/resolve 【点睛】【高分句型1】He suggested Stan stop rushing to choose a sport and pay more attention to what made him feel joyful instead of what he thought would win him an Olympic medal.
