What makes a learning conversation useful to the person asking for help?

Textbook: pp. 22–24. 45 minutes. You will ask follow-up questions and agree on a small learning action.

Read the interview below. Underline one question that helps Ella understand Binbin. Bring a real learning difficulty; “English is hard” needs a little more detail.

Ella: Hi, this is Ella’s podcast. Today’s guest is Binbin. He’s going to give us some ideas for learning English.

Binbin: Hi, Ella. Thanks for having me! For learning English, I think first you need to become an active learner.

Ella: What do you mean by that?

Binbin: Well, because I want to speak English well, I practise English all the time.

Ella: Oh, you must spend a lot of time studying!

Binbin: Well, it doesn’t mean you have to study all the time. You need to spend time using the language. For example, I speak English with friends. I repeat the dialogues from the films I like. I read English books, and sometimes I write my diary in English.

Ella: Wow! I guess you really enjoy learning.

Binbin: Yes, it’s true! But you see, I started out at zero and came across problems. I mean you just have to take things step by step. Start simple and build up.

Ella: That’s so true.

Textbook 3a, p. 24. Why does Ella invite Binbin? What misunderstanding does he correct? Tell a partner in one sentence for each question.

Find the line “What do you mean by that?” What does Binbin explain after it? In pairs, choose a follow-up question for each statement and explain your choice.

 

Question help: Can you give an example? / Which part is difficult? / How does that help? / What have you tried? Do not ask every question; listen and choose.

C Compare active learning 比较主动学习 8 minutes

For 3b, connect a tip to something Binbin actually does. Find evidence for at least three tips. Then read the four learners in 3c.

Jenny uses maths while shopping. Frank takes evening classes for an HSK examination. Tony writes a play based on history. Cathy puts off her project until the last day.

Which descriptions show learners taking action? Which gives the clearest evidence of using knowledge? Which learner would you question further before judging the quality of the learning?

Use “The description shows …” and “We still need to know …” to keep evidence separate from assumptions.

D Rehearse and change roles 试说与角色互换 8 minutes

Role-play part of 3a with the textbook audio or a partner. Stress the words that correct Ella’s misunderstanding. Then close the text and discuss a difficulty from 2d. The listener asks a follow-up before giving advice.

Begin if needed: “I want to improve …, but … .” / “Do you mean …?” / “You could try … because … .” / “I’ll start by … .”
