The Tan family, from Hunan, was new to the block and Mrs. Tan loved to cook. Her family enjoyed her stinky tofu (臭豆腐), so she cooked it twice a week.
One afternoon, they heard a knock on the door. It was from the community workers. They had received a complaint (投诉) from the Tans’ neighbors, the Lees, about the smell of the stinky tofu.
Mrs. Tan said sorry and decided that she would close the kitchen window the next time. That was what she did the following week. However, the community worker came to them again for the same problem.
“I have closed the kitchen WINDOWS!” she said in anger. Actually I can’t stand the habit of eating durians (榴莲). The smell of the durians is too strong for me.
The community worker then decided to call for a meeting with the durians at the beginning. Both Mrs. Tan and Mrs Lee had a scowl on the faces. They even didn’t look at each other. The community worker explained the disagreement. He suggested that the Tans can eat stinky tofu twice a month. Similarity, the Lees should try to cut durians weeks. Mrs Tan agreed and even invited Mrs Lee to taste her sticky tofu.
After a month, the community worker met up with both families to see if they got any progress. Mrs Lee was full of praise, “Your tofu tastes so good! You are a good cook, Mrs Lee. Shall I bring some durians for you next time. You might love them”. “Perhaps.” said Mrs Tan politely. From then on they learned to accept their likes and dislikes.

Did you know that most adults can’t remember much about their childhood? Researchers used to think it was because children don’t have a fully developed memory. But recent studies show that a few things can influence how much of our childhood we remember.
There are two kinds of long-term memory. As a young child, most of our memories are unconscious (无意识的). An unconscious memory happens naturally and helps us do the things we learned before without thinking about them, like riding a bike or singing the words of a song. But as we grow up, we start collecting more and more conscious memories, such as memorizing facts for a test. When you think of a conscious memory, you are actively bringing it into your mind.
Once we’ve formed a memory, the best way to remember it is to talk about it. This retelling of an event reinforces our memory. You can tell someone what happened, write about it in a diary, or even record yourself retelling the experience. Besides, the way parents speak to their child can also make a big difference. Parents should encourage a young child to talk about an event and pay attention to the details (细节), which means the child has to give answers to open-ended (开放式的) questions. In contrast (相反), questions with yes-or-no answers make children less likely to remember the events.
Some childhood memories are experiences we do many times without thinking about them, while others become stronger when we actively bring them into our minds. The more time we take to think about and share our memories, the more likely they are to stay with us.
28.How does the writer start the topic?
A. By asking questions. B. By listing numbers. C. By making comparisons.
29. Which of the following is an example of unconscious memories?
A. Planning a birthday party.
B. Riding a bike without thinking.
C. Memorizing facts for an important test.
30. What can help a young child remember an event better according to Paragraph 3?
A. Answering questions with yes-or-no answers.
B. Talking about the details of the event.
C. Saying nothing about the event.
31. What is the passage mainly about?
A. When people have a fully developed memory.
B. Why childhood memories matter to people’s future life.
C. What influences how much people remember from childhood.

Sun worked closely with her coach and teammates during her recovery. They shared ideas and supported each other. It was not easy at first. She sometimes felt worried, but she never gave up. “The only thing I could do was stay calm and prepare more,” she said.
