The Fall of the Roman Empire
The Western Roman Empire is known as one of the longest lasting empires. Historians believe that the empire collapsed in 476 A.D., when its last ruler, Romulus Augustulus, was ____31____.
The question of why the Western Roman Empire ended has fascinated historians for generations, ____32____ a debate that is nowhere near reaching an agreement. In 1984, German historian Alexander Demandt drew up a list of more than two hundred factors that have been cited to explain Rome’s fall — a fall ____33____ blamed on internal corruption (腐败).
Other scholars have pointed to more specific reasons. Some have focused on the evolution of the Roman economy, which struggled to expand by the third century A.D. because of ____34____ on enslaved (受奴役的) people for labor. Ongoing military conflicts and civil wars that broke out from the third century on played a part too, weakening central authority and causing the empire to break apart, leaving it more ____35____ to external threats.
In recent years, however, a (n) ____36____ theory has emerged, highlighting the impact of climatic changes and disease outbreaks. In a work published in 2017, classics professor Kyle Harper argues that the rise and fall of Rome was shaped not only by emperors, generals, soldiers and slaves, but also by viruses, volcanoes and solar cycles. It is a story in which humanity and the environment cannot be ____37____.
Harper and other scholars have drawn on climate and widespread-disease data, which have opened up new ____38____ of research into the study of the past. The data suggest that the ____39____ conditions of the empire in the first century B.C. favored agricultural, economic, and population growth. But they became more variable with a trend toward cooling and drought, which impacted agricultural productivity. This crisis was compounded by another ____40____ natural phenomenon: epidemics (时疫). From the latter half of the second century on, epidemics emerged that affected the whole Roman Empire with unmatched intensity.

“Sometimes, people say things they don’t mean out of anger,” explains Travis Atkinson, a licensed clinical social worker. “99% of the time, they are the ____41____ of an intense emotion: anger, which is brought about by stress from work, frustrations in life, and even hunger.”
This is based, in part, on the theory of emotional hijacking, which suggests that intense emotions — like anger — can temporarily affect our ability to think ____42____ and make sensible decisions. The amygdala — the brain’s “integrative center for emotions, emotional behavior, and motivation” — is involved too.
More ____43____, a process called “amygdala hijack” comes into play: when the amygdala becomes overactivated it sets off the fight-or-flight response, leading to narrowed focus. This in turn causes a(n) ____44____ of good judgment, leading to a flash of anger. It results in ____45____ that are driven more by emotional intensity than by genuine thoughts or beliefs.
This indicates that the ____46____ of the person’s outburst might not even be at the root of their anger. Perhaps, they were angry about the way their boss treated them at work. They may not have been able to fight back then, but the anger they’ve held on to since can ____47____ at the slightest disagreement with the friend they were catching up with at dinner. Letting out anger can help people feel emotionally ____48____, many psychologists argue.
Others, however, believe an outburst can actually intensify our emotions and end up being ____49____. “You have the sense of immediate improvement, but it’s only a(n) ____50____,” says Jeffrey Lohr, a professor of psychology at the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville. “But the point is, it might be the search for that short-lived relief — even if it brings further harm — that drives a person to ____51____ angrily.” Lohr doesn’t see angry outbursts as a healthy way to release anger, yet he also warns against bottling up ____52____ feelings. His ____53____: releasing anger without using hurtful words.
But managing emotions isn’t easy, and not everyone can control their feelings well. Sometimes ____54____ slip out before we even realize what we’re saying. We only ____55____ it when the other person looks hurt or after we understand what we’ve said.

My husband and I were once in Nepal (尼泊尔) to see sunrise over the Himalayas.
One morning we awoke to total darkness at 5 o’clock. As we rushed through a town with cameras in hand, I noticed the calm, gentle way the Nepalese people greeted the morning. One man boiled a huge pot of milk tea, and other villagers gathered around his fire, cupping their hands around small glasses of the steaming sweet mixture. It was fascinating, but not to be left behind, we joined the stream of tourists moving quickly up to the lookout point.
The top was crowded when we arrived, but after 10 minutes of cold waiting, the assembled group gave up. “The cloud cover is too heavy,” one said. Then one by one they rushed down the hill to the next item on their sightseeing list. I was disappointed as well, but suddenly I noticed a small Nepalese boy absently playing with a stick and shooting quick glances at the clouds. He must know something we don’t, I thought. I decided to wait with him.
The boy and I didn’t have to wait long. Moments later, a tiny stream of golden light burned through one thick cloud, then another. Rose-colored fog warmed the backs of the clouds, and suddenly the morning sun stole a glance around the side of the mountain, miles above where I’d expected it to be.
Nothing I’d seen before prepared me for the moment the clouds withdrew with bowed heads, and the magnificent Himalayas were revealed before, around, and above me. I sat in astonishment, not breathing, not daring to look away, certain that God had placed me here at the backdoor of Earth to show me what Heaven really looks like. I certainly got the message. Never again will I rush a sunrise. I now know Nature will supply her fruits to me only when I am truly ready to receive them.

When we perceive other people, we seldom describe a person in cold and objective words. “She was 5 feet 8 inches tall, had fair hair, and wore a colored skirt.” More often, we try to get inside the other person to pinpoint his or her attitudes, emotions, motivations, abilities, ideas and characters. Furthermore, we sometimes behave as if we can accomplish this difficult job very quickly — perhaps with a two-second glance.
We try to obtain information about others in many ways. Social scientist Berger suggests several methods for reducing uncertainties about others: watching, without being noticed, a person interacting with others, particularly with others who are known to you so you can compare the observed person’s behavior with the known others’ behavior; observing a person in a situation where social behavior is relatively unrestrained or where a wide variety of behavioral responses are called for; deliberately structuring the physical or social environment so as to observe the person’s responses to specific stimuli; asking people who have had or have frequent contact with the person about him or her; and using various strategies in face-to-face interaction to uncover information about another person: questions, self-disclosure (自我表露), and so on.
Getting to know someone is a never-ending task, largely because people are constantly changing and the methods we use to obtain information are often imprecise. You may have known someone for ten years and still know very little about him. If we accept the idea that we won’t ever fully know another person, it enables us to deal more easily with those things that get in the way of accurate knowledge such as secrets and inconsistent (前后不一致的) behavior.
63. The word “pinpoint” in paragraph one is closest in meaning to ________ .
A. appreciate B. obtain C. identify D. explain
64. What do we learn from the first paragraph?
A. People like to be described in cold, objective words.
B. It is impossible to get inside a person.
C. It is difficult to describe a person in words.
D. Getting to know a person is usually no easy job.
65. It can be inferred from Berger’s suggestions that ________.
A. people reveal their true self on every occasion
B. the best way to know a person is by making comparisons
C. in most cases we should avoid contacting the observed person directly
D. face-to-face interaction is the best way to uncover information about a person
66. The author’s purpose in writing the passage is to________.
A. warn readers of the negative side of people’s characters
B. give advice on proper behavior for social occasions
C. provide ways of how to describe people
D. discuss the various aspects of getting to know people

You certainly don’t need to avoid flipped properties. A flipped property does have some strong selling points. A lot of its features and fixtures have been replaced or improved. Certainly, you’ll save on the time and trouble of doing the renovation yourself. But there are some things to watch out for if you’re considering buying one.
____68____For example, Alice recently toured a flipped house whose kitchen drawer was blocked by the refrigerator and the dishwasher wasn’t installed correctly -things that would prevent people from being able to function in there. Addressing issues like these can become costly, especially if you haven’t factored them into your budget.
Don’t neglect your right to a professional inspection. ____69____So getting an expert to go take a thorough look at the property is crucial, to make sure everything is up to code. It’s going to be really important to do your sewer(下水道)and separate roof inspections. Flipped houses may seem up-to-date on the surface, but shiny new finishes can sometimes mask substandard work.
Finally, flipped properties are rarely advertised as such. Therefore, it is crucial to work with aknowledgeable real estate agent. ____70____When he tours a house that he suspects is being flipped, he’ll check who owned the home previously, and will reach out to other agents in his network to see if anyone has experience buying from them.
A. The key is to look for places where improvements were done poorly.
B. An experienced agent is probably going to have a better eye than the buyer.
C. Is buying one of these quick-turnaround properties a good idea?
D. Set aside money for any problems that may crop up or ask the seller to cover them.
E. How do you know if the previous owner has moved out of the house?
F. Flippers sometimes skip getting permits for the work they do.
IV. Summary Writing
71. Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
How to Make a Good Video Resumé (简历)?
Video resumés have been around for a long time. With a well-made video resumé, you can present yourself creatively and allow a hiring manager to assess your personality, thus giving you an opportunity for interview. But how to make a good video resumé?
First, start by introducing yourself and addressing the company you are applying to. For example, “Hello InVideo, I’m John Doe”. Not only does this get their attention but it makes them feel prioritized. The next thing is to address what profession you’re in or desire to be in. If you’re a filmmaker, you can simply state that or be creative with words and say you’re a visual storyteller.
Then, talk about your passion for what you do and support it by referring to your past experiences and work. For example, building on the filmmaker’s introduction, you could talk about how meeting people from around the world and sharing their stories deeply motivates you, and then you can share an experience that supports it. You can also focus on life experiences that have led you to cultivate skills-like taking a year off to travel abroad, volunteering at a shelter, or a hobby that you actively pursue. You can also speak about your special achievements and awards that will add value to your profile or you can get someone to speak on behalf of you as social proof.
At the end of the video, leave the ball in their court. However, you also need to give them a reason to call you for an interview. For example, you could end the video with this — “I have a lot more to me than I could fit in this short video and I hope you give me a chance to tell you about it over an interview”.

Today, it’s my 19th birthday and I’m 10,000 kilometres from home. I’ve just arrived in South Africa, and I’ll be doing voluntary work at a hospital here for the next year.
When I passed my final exams last year, I decided to take a “gap year”, travelling and working before I take up my university studies. I wanted to do something to help people, so I arranged to come to this children’s hospital near Cape Town. There are six volunteers here at the moment. We have no medical training, but that isn’t important — our role will be to organise activities for the children, to bring some fun and laughter into their lives while they’re going through a hard time in hospital. I know it won’t be easy. I’ll be working for six hours a day from Monday to Friday and the work will take imagination, patience and lots of energy. But it will also be rewarding and I hope that by the end of my time here I will have helped to make life happier for some of the children.
When I get back to the UK, I think I will have had a fantastic adventure. I will have been living independently and experiencing life in a place very different from the world I know. I hope I will have made new friends, and I know I will have learnt a lot.
Questions
11.What will the speaker be doing during the next year?
12.What will the speaker do in the hospital?
13.What will the speaker have got when going back to the UK?

C. Pushing westward the boundary of the Grand Canyon. D. Enlarging the parking space for visitors.
A 15. D 16. B
Situated in the north-western part of Arizona, the Grand Canyon is one of the natural wonders of the world. Contrary to popular belief, the Grand Canyon is not the longest, deepest or widest canyon in the world. But it is accessible, and with little vegetation to hide it, it feels big. But however vast it seems, it is not big enough to support the millions of people who visit it every year.
When one section of the Grand Canyon was declared a national park in 1919, three years after the creation of the National Park Service, visitor numbers were 44,000. Today, with five million visitors a year, the Park Service is finding it difficult to keep the Canyon accessible to the public and to safeguard it for future generations.
The pressures on the Grand Canyon National Park forced the Park Service to draw up a management plan. One of the first problems it faced was that of the large number of visitors' cars which needed parking space. The Park Service got around the problem by allowing visitors to take advantage of free buses, which take them on a number of routes around the park.
Some of the other problems faced by the park are the result of things happening outside its boundaries. Take air pollution. On summer days, when there are south-westerly winds, the pollution blown in from Southern California can restrict the views over the Canyon.
Those who once thought that the Grand Canyon was just an amazing hole in the ground soon learn that however big it is, its popularity is in danger of destroying the very qualities that made it one of the seven natural wonders in the world.
Questions
14. What is the passage mainly about?
15. How many visitors come to the Grand Canyon every year now?
16. What was done to solve the shortage of parking space in the Grand Canyon?

W: I’ve seen that one. You’re not sure what it's advertising to begin with, are you? A graceful silver vehicle moving through an unusual landscape... it could be a spacecraft of the future. All very stylish. The trouble is, it’s a bit of a let-down when you realise it’s just another car advert!
M: Yes, the beginning is a bit misleading...It’s funny, isn’t it, sometimes the most effective ads are the really simple ones — you know, like a football manager sitting down at the breakfast table with his family, enjoying particular cookies...
W: He eats them, so it must be good. And that actress from Friends advertising shampoo-Jennifer Aniston, wasn’t it? You know, seeing famous people on screen can be a huge influence on us. We see them as...well, as role models.
M: Definitely. The ads they put on TV before the World Cup or the Olympics always use super stars, don’t they?
W: Yeah, remember the one that had a whole team of top footballers from around the world! The special effects were incredible — the budget must have been huge... all for one advert!
M: But the company probably earned millions of dollars in increased sales, so for them it was worth it!

Harper and other scholars have drawn on climate and widespread-disease data, which have opened up new ____38____ of research into the study of the past.

The amygdala — the brain’s ‘integrative center for emotions, emotional behavior, and motivation’ — is involved too.”

(A)
My husband and I were once in Nepal (尼泊尔) to see sunrise over the Himalayas.

There are so many idioms based on music or instruments that are used in everyday speech! Here are some examples, which might help you to hit the right note when talking in English!
Let it go
Song: Let it go (2013) on Disney’s Frozen soundtrack
Meaning: If you “let go” of a bad feeling or memory, you stop thinking about it or being upset by it; literally, if you “let go” of something, you stop holding onto it with your hands.
Example: “I know you are upset that she left you, but you have to let it go and get on with your life.”
Turn the page
Song: Turn the page (1973) on the album Back in ’72 by Bob Seger
Meaning: If you “turn the page”, you forget about the past and start your life again after a bad period. Literally, if you “turn the page” while reading, you go to the next page in a book and start reading that one.

Example: “During the dinner, I didn’t want to rock the boat, so I kept quiet about the terrible money situation.”
Let your hair down
Song: Let your hair down (2014) on the album Don’t Kill the Magic by Magic

Example: “Come on, this is a party! Let your hair down and have some fun!”
Poker face
Song: Poker face (2008) on the album The Fame by Lady Gaga
Meaning: If you have a “poke face”, you have a neutral expression on your face that doesn’t show an emotion, and which doesn’t let other people know that what you are thinking or feeling. Literally, during a game of poker, players often have a “poker face” (a neutral expression), so they do not give other players any information about which cards they might have.

C. provide ways of how to describe people
D. discuss the various aspects of getting to know people
C 64. D 65. C 66. D
根据第一段中的“More often, we try to get inside the other person to pinpoint his or her attitudes, emotions, motivations, abilities, ideas and characters.(更多时候,我们试图走进对方内心,去pinpoint他 / 她的态度、情绪、动机、能力、想法和性格。)”
根据第一段“Furthermore, we sometimes behave as if we can accomplish this difficult job very quickly - perhaps with a two-second glance.(此外,我们有时表现得好像能很快完成这项困难的工作——也许只需瞥两秒。)”
根据第二段中的“Social scientist Berger suggests several methods for reducing uncertainties about others: watching, without being noticed, a person interacting with others, particularly with others who are known to you so you can compare the observed person’s behavior with the known others’ behavior; observing a person in a situation where social behavior is relatively unrestrained or where a wide variety of behavioral responses are called for; deliberately structuring the physical or social environment so as to observe the person’s responses to specific stimuli; asking people who have had or have frequent contact with the person about him or her; and using various strategies in face-to-face interaction to uncover information about another person: questions, self-disclosure (自我表露), and so on.
根据第三段中的“Getting to know someone is a never-ending task, largely because people are constantly changing and the methods we use to obtain information are often imprecise.(了解一个人是永无止境的任务,很大程度上是因为人一直在变化,而且我们获取信息的方法往往不够精确。)”

根据上文“House flipping is hardly new. For someone who is working in the real estate market, a flipped or recently renovated (翻新的)home can be very appealing. But how about you, the home-hunter?(房屋翻新并不是什么新鲜事。对于在房地产市场工作的人来说,翻新过或最近装修过的房子非常有吸引力。那你呢,购房者?)”可知,上文讲述的是翻新过的房子对于在房地产市场工作的人来说有吸引力。选项C“Is buying one of these quick-turnaround properties a good idea?(购买这些快速周转的房产是个好主意吗?)”
根据下文“For example, Alice recently toured a flipped house whose kitchen drawer was blocked by the refrigerator and the dishwasher wasn’t installed correctly -things that would prevent people from being able to function in there. Addressing issues like these can become costly, especially if you haven’t factored them into your budget.(例如,Alice最近参观了一个翻新的房子,厨房的抽屉被冰箱堵住了,洗碗机也没有安装好——这些都会妨碍人们在里面工作。解决这些问题可能会付出高昂的代价,尤其是如果你没有把它们考虑到你的预算中。)”可知,在参观这种翻新过的房子时,我们要注意那些翻新得不太好的地方。选项A“The key is to look for places where improvements were done poorly.(关键是要找出那些改善得不好的地方。)” 故选A。
根据空后内容“So getting an expert to go take a thorough look at the property is crucial, to make sure everything is up to code.(因此,请一位专家去仔细检查一下这处房产是至关重要的,以确保一切符合规定。)” F“Flippers sometimes skip getting permits for the work they do.(翻新者有时会跳过他们所做工作的许可证。)”
根据空前“Therefore, it is crucial to work with acknowledgeable real estate agent.(因此,与知识渊博的房地产经纪人合作是至关重要的。)” 而下文“When he tours a house that he suspects is being flipped, he’ll check who owned the home previously, and will reach out to other agents in his network to see if anyone has experience buying from them(当他参观他怀疑正在被翻新的房屋时,他会检查以前房主是谁,并会联系他网络中的其他经纪人,看看是否有人从他们那里购买过房屋的经验。)” B“An experienced agent is probably going to have a better eye than the buyer.(一个有经验的经纪人可能会比买方看得更清楚。)”

Finally invite for an interview, emphasizing that you have more to share.

[高分句型2]Conclude by inviting an interview, emphasizing there’s more to share.
V. Translation
Directions: Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.
_______________________________________________________________
Government officials strongly appeal to citizens to practice garbage classification.
(It)(汉译英)
_______________________________________________________________
It was not until the final results came out that we realized how far our previous thoughts were from reality.
It was not until the final results came out;“我们才意识到之前的想法是多么偏离实际”是主句,“我们才意识到”译为we realized;“之前的想法是多么偏离实际”是宾语从句,how作连接副词,表示“多么”,从句要用陈述语序;“之前的想法”指“我们之前的想法”,要补译our,译为复数名词our previous thoughts,“偏离实际”对应的英语表达是be far from reality,be动词要用were;how表示“多么”时可以直接修饰形容词,将far提到how之后,整合为how far our previous thoughts were from reality。
_______________________________________________________________
We plan to cooperate with more communities and launch various activities to raise public awareness of wildlife protection.
We plan to cooperate with more communities and launch various activities;“以此提高公众保护野生动物的意识”作目的状语,翻译时可不用加逗号与前面内容隔开,译为to raise public awareness of wildlife protection。
_______________________________________________________________
Despite numerous difficulties, he made up his mind to stick to practising oral English, firmly convinced that consistent efforts would eventually make him stand out in the speech contest.
【详解】表示“尽管重重困难”可用介词短语despite numerous difficulties作状语;表示“下定决心做某事”为动词短语made up one’s mind to do sth,此处为代词his;表示“坚持练习英语口语”为动词短语stick to practising oral English;表示“坚信持续的努力终将使他在演讲比赛中脱颖而出”为主语的伴随状态,用convinced that...作伴随状语,表示“坚定地”为副词firmly;从句中,“持续的努力”表达为consistent efforts;“终将使他在演讲比赛中脱颖而出”表达为would eventually make him stand out in the speech contest,故整体伴随部分译为firmly convinced that consistent efforts would eventually make him stand out in the speech contest。
