In January 2026, she left her big company job and became a village officer in Zhutian Village, Lichuan, Hubei. The village is in the mountains, about 1,100 meters above sea level. It is cool in summer, with fresh air and beautiful views, making it a good place to escape the summer heat. Many villagers rent out rooms to visitors in summer. But in recent years, the number of visitors dropped, which worried the villagers a lot. To solve the problem, Wang Shuai started an account called “Tsinghua Xiao Wang in Zhutian”. She posted short videos about the village’s views and local food. She also helped put more than 70 homestays online. As a result, nearly 100 visitors came to the village. The villagers were very happy. Besides tourism, Wang helped bring tap water to some homes and put up 66 new streetlights. She also opened a study room for children. In the study room, children can read books and do their homework after school. Wang Shuai works hard and communicates with villagers every day. She walks door to door to ask what each family needs most. Some days she comes back with nothing but tired feet. Other days she comes back with problems she doesn’t know how to solve. But she keeps going. She has learned that villagers don’t trust words—they trust actions, so she starts doing small things first. Gradually, the villagers get to trust her. When some people asked if it was a waste for a PhD to work in a village, Wang told the reporter, “What book-smart people lack most is understanding real life and real people.” 31. It shows up in simple things like using paper to make “planes” instead of just writing on it. The term was first used in 1975 by a company. Human Resources (HR) offered a 9-dot puzzle to the interviewees who were asked to connect all the dots with only 4 lines. This task actually requires some lateral thinking (横向思维,也可称水平思维), so HR encouraged the interviewees to “think outside the box”. In this case, they needed to look beyond the box and create something else. To draw those 4 lines, you have to first use up all the ways within the box. Only then can you realize that the problem is the box itself. You need to understand the problem, then solve it. ▲ If not, you wouldn’t find the answer. Take Tu Youyou as an example. When she tried to find a medicine for a terrible disease, the usual ways didn’t work, so she looked beyond modern medicine and turned to ancient Chinese books. There she extracted artemisinin (青蒿素) from a useful plant. It has saved many lives. In 2015, she won the Nobel Prize for this great discovery. Whatever you do, think twice: first in the box, then outside the box. Outside-the-box thinking often breaks the routines and may sound strange. But without thinking outside the box, these people, like Thomas Edison, Isaac Newton, wouldn’t have changed the world in the way they did. Just allow yourself to start thinking outside the box. You’ll be glad you did. 36. How does the writer begin the passage? A. By giving an example. B. By offering a definition. C. By showing an experiment. D. By making a comparison. 37. Which is the right answer to solving the 9-dot puzzle according to the passage? A. B. C. D. 38. Which of the following can be put in ▲ ? A. So it is important to challenge ourselves in daily life. B. Many people are afraid of leaving their comfort zone. C. To think outside the box, you must look beyond a narrow view. D. Taking risks can help you grow faster and get more opportunities. 39. Which of the following shows “thinking outside the box”? A. Tom used an old cup to hold some water. B. Mary threw empty bottles into the trash bin. C. Lily turned a used plastic bottle into a watering pot. D. Jack bought a new pen when his old one was broken. 40. What’s the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage? A. To teach us some smart learning methods. B. To encourage readers to think creatively. C. To introduce some interesting stories. D. To show the benefits of taking risks. B 37. D 38. C 39. C 40. 根据第一段“Thinking outside the box is often used to describe different, or creative thinking.” 根据第二段“connect all the dots with only 4 lines. This task actually requires some lateral thinking, so HR encouraged the interviewees to “think outside the box”. In this case, they needed to look beyond the box and create something else.” 根据空格后“If not, you wouldn’t find the answer. Take Tu Youyou as an example...she looked beyond modern medicine and turned to ancient Chinese books.” 根据第一段“Thinking outside the box is often used to describe different, or creative thinking. It shows up in simple things like using paper to make “planes” instead of just writing on it.” 根据最后一段“Just allow yourself to start thinking outside the box. You’ll be glad you did.” convenient leaves live on appeared in part home guidance The ginkgo (银杏) is one of the oldest trees in the world. B Wang Shuai is a young woman with a PhD in nuclear science from Tsinghua University. What was Wang Shuai before she became a village officer? A. A company worker. B. A university teacher. C. A reporter. D. A doctor. 32. What does the problem refer to? A. By putting up some new streetlights. B. By cutting the price of the homestays. C. By opening a new study room for children. D. By showing the village and its food online. 34. Helping Children in the Village C Thinking outside the box is often used to describe different, or creative thinking. D. To show the benefits of taking risks. convenient leaves live on appeared in part home guidance The ginkgo (银杏) is one of the oldest trees in the world.
