Last August, 14-year-old Wang Fan went to a small village in Gansu with his parents, who were taking photos of old bridges for a book. Wang Fan soon felt bored. There was no internet in the village, and he had nothing to do but walk around.
On the third day, he met an old man called Grandpa Liu, who was making a kite out of bamboo and paper. Wang Fan stopped and watched. The old man cut the bamboo into thin pieces, heated them over a small fire to bend them into shape, and then tied the pieces into a frame. Less than an hour later, a kite shaped like a bird was finished.
“It is not difficult,” Grandpa Liu said, “but it takes practice. My grandfather taught me, and his grandfather taught him. People have flown kites in China for more than two thousand years.”
Wang Fan asked if he could try. The old man handed him the knife. The first piece he cut broke; the second was too thick; the third caught fire and turned black. He wanted to give it up. But the old man laughed and said, “The wind doesn’t care how many times you fail. It only lifts you once.”
Two hours later, a very ugly kite — one wing was longer than the other — was ready. They took it up the hill. It fell twice. The third time, however, it rose and stayed there, higher and higher. Wang Fan jumped up and down and shouted with joy.
On the way home, Wang Fan did not look for a signal for his phone. He took the ugly kite with him and put it on the wall of his bedroom. Whenever he meets a problem he cannot solve, he looks up at it and remembers the old man’s words. Sometimes the best learning happens where there is no internet.

Most of us think forgetting is a failure. We try hard to remember everything and feel sad when we cannot. Scientists now say the opposite is true: a healthy brain has to forget. Forgetting is not a fault in our memory system; it is one of its most useful features.
In a famous study, researchers asked two groups of students to learn the same word lists. One group was told to remember everything forever. The other was told that they would be tested the next day and would have to pick out what mattered most. The second
