The Everleigh Centre, a new children's facility that cost £600,000 to build, opened this week in Penhill,Swindon, an area once known as one of the region's most disadvantaged. This new centre is expected to make a big difference for families since they no longer need to travel far to find educational help for their children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities(SEND).
Koral Averies, a local mother whose daughter Eva has autism(自闭症)and sensory issues, expressed her happiness about the new facility. She said, “The centre offers amazing facilities, and it's a safe place for children to grow and learn. However, I believe there's still a great need for more similar services.”
In January, a report illustrated that the demand(需求)for SEND services had risen at a greater rate in Swindon than the national average, with particular concern about the lack of resources in the south and east areas of Swindon.
The Everleigh Centre is housed in a repurposed nursery and offers various services, including a brightly lit ball pit, a sensory zone, an outdoor swing for children in wheelchairs, and a special space for parents to relax. The centre was officially opened on October 8 by Adorabelle Amaral-Shaikh, the education cabinet member, and Neil Hopkins, the deputy mayor of Swindon.
Ms Amaral-Shaikh explained that Penhill was chosen for the centre due to its central location for children with special needs. She added, “It's not just about providing a school place, but about creating an environment that meets each child's specific needs.”
To improve services, Ms Amaral-Shaikh mentioned that the local government had received a£3.4 million grant for SEND support. She also welcomed feedback(反馈)from families on how to make the services even better.

Over the past 20 years, more and more research has pointed to quality social relationships as being a major determinant of both physical and mental(身心的)health over time. In one well-known study, researchers found that feeling lonely for a long time can be even more dangerous than smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
The reasons behind this connection are still not entirely clear. And first and foremost is the problem of correlation(关联)versus causation. Most studies on social connections and health are observational, meaning they can only show that two things happen together, not necessarily that one causes the other. For example, people with health problems may have poorer social relationships, but it's also possible that new variables at play influence both social relationships and physical health.
Despite this, it's likely that social relationships can help protect and improve physical health. One idea being studied is the effect of social connections on inflammation(炎症).New research, published in Brain, Behavior, and Immunity, shows a strong connection between social relationships and biological markers like inflammation and, in fact, the aging process itself.
In this study, characteristics of more than 2,000 middle-aged adults in the United States were observed. The researchers used a measure called Cumulative Social Advantage(CSA), which looks at a person’s level of social support in areas like family, communities, and emotional support. It turns out that there was a significant correlation between CSA and biological aging: The higher the social advantage, the slower the aging, and the lower the inflammation.
Although this is still a correlational study and can’t prove cause and effect, it points to the idea that strong social relationships might lead to better physical health. People with good social connections might have lower blood pressure, stronger immune systems, and better overall health.
This study further supports the idea that building and maintaining friendships is just as important as eating well and exercising for a healthy life.
28. What can be inferred about lonely individuals according to the text?
A. They may experience higher health risks. B. They tend to do workouts regularly.

A. To argue that smoking is worse than loneliness.

C. To explain how loneliness directly affects aging.
D. To suggest that health problems cause loneliness.

A new study shows that the average size of trees in the Amazon rainforest has been increasing as carbon dioxide (CO2) levels have risen, meaning these larger trees play a more important role in determining whether the forest can remain a carbon sink that stores CO2
Until now, how forests will react to a changing climate(气候)is an open question. For example, one hypothesis(假说)is that larger trees will fall in number because they are more subject to climate-related events.Understanding this is important for models of the future climate, as forests play a major role in taking up huge amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere, locking it away to slow global(全球的)warming.
Adriane Esquivel-Muelbert, a researcher from the University of Cambridge, and her coworkers, have been measuring the size of trees in 188 plots with an average area of 12,000 square metres across the Amazon basin for up to 30 years. During that time, CO2 levels in the atmosphere have risen by nearly a fifth.
“What we're following is a given area in the forest and the average tree size there is bigger, meaning that the trees can store more carbon in that space than they could in the past,” says Esquivel-Muelbert.
Normally, the average size of trees in a healthy forest would remain the same, as young trees take the place of fallen big trees and grow. However, the researchers believe that the increase in CO2 has allowed larger trees to grow more quickly. This means that large trees now play a key role in carbon storage, and losing them would have a marked impact on the forest's ability to lock up CO2.
“The important finding is that CO2 has been increasing tree growth, and in many ways that is reassuring, because wood is a significant carbon sink,” says Peter Etchells at Durham University, UK. “However, we need to continue studying how trees react to both CO2and other environmental changes to better understand the future of our forests.”
32. How do rising CO2 levels affect the trees in the Amazon according to the new study?
A. They grow more rapidly. B.They remain the same size.
C. They see a fall in number. D. They cause global warming.
33. What might happen if large trees were lost from the Amazon rainforest?
A. Carbon storage would rise markedly. B.Climate-related events would end.
C.Young trees would be badly impacted. D. The forest would pack less CO2.
34. What does the underlined word “reassuring” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Plain. B.Informal. C.Comforting. D. Confusing.
35. What does Peter Etchells suggest?
A. Applying the result into practice. B. Carrying out further research.
C. Updating the local environment. D.Planting trees in the Amazon.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“He never smiles anymore,” my husband whispered one evening, watching the dark window of his father's living room across the street.
He was right. My father-in-law had once been the heart of every family gathering-the man who told endless jokes and danced with his wife on Sunday evenings. But ever since she died several weeks ago, he simply hadn't been himself.
Something inside him shut down. He stopped answering our calls, stopped coming to dinner, and stopped buying balloons for our three-year-old son Tommy, who used to get one every week just for fun. The cheerful man we all loved seemed to have disappeared(消失)with her.
My husband and I tried everything—knocking with warm meals, inviting him for walks, sitting beside him in heavy silence. But nothing reached him. He would nod politely, take the food without tasting it, and retreat into his chair by the window, staring at nothing. We were losing him, and we didn't know how to bring him back.
One Saturday, when we were visiting him again, Tommy, being the outgoing little boy he was, walked over to Grandpa and climbed onto his lap(大腿). Grandpa sitting in the chair looked down at the small figure on his knees, unsure what to do.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Before Grandpa could react(反应),Tommy took his grandpa’s glasses out of his shirt pocket.
The next day, Grandpa rang our doorbell, holding a balloon for his grandson.

One possible version:
Dear Peter,
I'm glad to hear that you're planning to start running regularly. As people often say,any exercise is better than none,so I totally
support your decision
To start scientifically, you should warm up before each run and cool down afterwards.Besides, you'd better wear proper running
shoes and increase your distance gradually;otherwise, you may get hurt.At first three runs a week is enough. Also, listen to your
body and rest when necessary. As you keep going, you'll feel stronger and more energetic.
Progress takes time,so please stick with it.I'm sure you'll enjoy the benefits.
Yours,
Li Hua

One possible version:
Before Grandpa could react ()Tommy took his grandpa's glasses out of his shirt pocket.Tommy placed them on his own
face,upside down,precariously perched on his short,pudgy nose.He looked at Grandpa and giggled,making Grandpa smile,too.
Soon they were walking around the room,Tommy leading Grandpa. That small smile was like sunlight breaking through clouds after
a long storm. My husband squeezed my hand.We exchanged a look of disbelief and hope. The ice had cracked. The door Grandpa had
locked so tightly was now slightly opened by his three-year-old grandson. And surprisingly,at the time we said goodbye,Grandpa
promised Tommy a balloon the next day.
The next day,Grandpa rang our doorbell, holding a balloon for his grandson.Tommy ran to the door with a shriek of joy,
wrapping his tiny arms around Grandpa's legs.Grandpa bent down, handed him the balloon, and for the first time in weeks, pulled the
boy into a real hug.Grandpa started staying for dinner again. While my husband and I were busy in the kitchen,I could hear them
laughing in the living room. The sound of it was so warm, familiar and alive.Grandpa was still missing Grandma. But somehow,
across the street and back,he had found his way home.
