When I was in high school, I was a shy boy and didn’t know how to start a talk with others. Once I was a member of a group in my high school, and we needed to prepare for an activity. Some volunteers were busy collating (整理) materials. I really wanted to join them. Although I was nervous, I picked up my courage, went up to them and asked if there was anything that I could help with. However, one of the girls said, “No, thank you. There’s no work for you here.” After hearing her words, I stood there with great embarrassment. At that time, another volunteer saw what happened and said, “Hey, we’ve got some work to do, and we need your help.” While I was working, the volunteer started conversations with me and introduced his classmates to me. With his warm help, I started talking with them happily.
Since then, I have become more outgoing and like to join in activities and make friends. I am grateful to the volunteer who helped me get out of the embarrassment. Young people in China are showing off their style with fun bag charms (包挂). These small decorations hang from backpacks and swing as people walk. They help young people show who they are and create a new way of emotional connection.
There are all kinds of these bag charms. Some are soft, plush toys, while others get ideas from traditional Chinese culture or museum pieces. For example, Xi’an Momo Dolls and Sanxingdui’s Bronze Mask series reimagine traditional elements (元素) into new forms. These “China-chic” designs turn bag charms into cultural bridges between the past and present.
These charms offer more than just a decorative touch; they play a key role in breaking the ice among strangers. A shared charm can help people connect with just a smile. As the Chinese New Year came near, Vicky, who lives in Nanjing, bought clothes not just for her family, but for her charms. “I match charms to my mood and clothes,” she explains. “Sometimes they feel like emotional codes — shared understanding brings quick connections at once.”
The charms have become popular because of the new and better ways of making them in places like Guangdong. Dongguan, known as the “designer toy capital”, has thousands of factories using smart technology to create new designs quickly. Today, these charms are reshaping the international image of “Made in China” by telling stories based on local creativity. These small items are building emotional ties with customers around the world and showing special Eastern beauty.
A Grade-10 student from Nanjing shared her thoughts. “Every time I see the same charm on a stranger’s backpack, it feels like discovering a tiny bridge linking two unknown hearts.” Dr Zhang, a teacher from Guangdong University of Finance & Economics, also put forward his view: “If fashionable small goods rush into teenagers’ daily life endlessly, will the nice glow of such lovely accessories (配饰) finally change into meaningless desire?”
39. What can we learn about Sanxingdui Bronze Mask bag charms?
A. They are real ancient museum works.
B. They mainly spread culture inside museums.
C. They are expensive gifts for museum visitors.
D. They carry ancient cultural elements in new forms.
40. What does the writer want to tell us by saying “Sometimes they feel like emotional codes”?
A. Bag charms hold hidden symbols. B. Teens leave messages on their charms.
C. People buy clothes just for charms. D. The same charm can quickly connect people.
41. What helps charms gain worldwide popularity?
A. Popular Chinese New Year shopping. B. New technology and local creativity.
C. Ancient museum collections’ long history. D. Varieties of soft and lovely plush toys.
42. What is Dr Zhang’s opinion towards bag charms?
A. Positive. B. Supportive. C. Worried. D. Curious.
【答案】39. D 40. D 41. B 42. C
【解析】

【40题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文章第3段“Sometimes they feel like emotional codes — shared understanding brings quick connections at once.”可知,包挂被比作“情感密码”,是因为相同的包挂承载着共同的喜好,能让人们快速建立联系。
【41题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第4段“The charms have become popular because of the new and better ways of making them in places like Guangdong. Dongguan, known as the ‘designer toy capital’, has thousands of factories using smart technology to create new designs quickly. Today, these charms are reshaping the international image of ‘Made in China’ by telling stories based on local creativity.”可知,新的智能制造技术和本土创意助力包挂在全球受到欢迎。
【42题详解】
观点态度题。根据文章第5段“If fashionable small goods rush into teenagers’ daily life endlessly, will the nice glow of such lovely accessories finally change into meaningless desire?”可知,张博士担忧这类时尚小物无节制地涌入青少年生活后,其美好价值最终会演变成无意义的欲望,可见他对这类配饰的过度流行持担忧态度。

Scientists who study happiness have evidence (证据) to show that being kind to others can result in happiness. Acts as simple as buying a cup of coffee for someone can lift a person’s mood, for example. Everyday life is full of chances for such actions, yet people do not always make the most of them.
In studies, behavioural scientist Nicholas Epley and I examined a possible explanation: people who do kind acts underestimate (低估) how much the ones receiving kindness value their behaviour.
In the experiments (实验), about 1,000 people were asked to do some actions to make someone else feel good. We asked both the person performing (执行) the kind act and the one receiving it to answer some questions. The performers were asked to report their own experiences and to guess how the receivers might feel. We wanted to understand how valuable people considered these acts to be, so both the performer and the receiver had to rate how”big” the act seemed. In all cases, we compared the performer’s expectations of the receiver’s mood with the receiver’s actual (实际的) experience.
For one, both performers and receivers experienced more positive moods. For another, the receivers felt much better than the kind performers expected. The receivers also rated these acts as”bigger” than the people performing them did.
At first, we studied acts of kindness done for familiar people, such as friends, classmates or family. But we found that performers underestimated their positive influence on strangers as well. In one experiment, performers in a public park gave away hot chocolate on a cold winter’s day to people that just happened to be nearby. Again, the kind act brought more happiness than the performers expected
These findings suggest that what might seem small could matter a great deal to the person we do it for. Considering these warm actions can improve our own mood and brighten the day of another person, why not choose kindness when we can?
47. What behaviour can lift a person’s mood?
A. Listening to music alone. B. Buying a cup of coffee for someone.
C. Cleaning the street with many friends. D. Travelling to the countryside more often.
48. What did the receivers do in the experiments?
A. They showed kindness to others.
B. They guessed the performers’ feelings.
C. They rated how valuable the performers’ act of kindness was.
D. They compared the performers’ expectations with their actual results.
49. What do the studies and experiments show?
A. Being kind can reduce one’s happiness as expected.
B. Kindness can have far more positive influences than expected.
C. Choosing kindness is more difficult than expected.
D. Showing kindness is more valuable than receiving it.
50. The passage is written to _________.
A. introduce a successful study B. fight against dishonest behaviours
C. call on people to be good performers D. encourage people to show kindness to others
【答案】47. B 48. C 49. B 50. D

Zhou Shuping, a Grade 9 student at our school, is a good example. Here are two stories about him that match the top two qualities (品质) in the survey.
Every weekend, Zhou Shuping goes to a local old people’s home as a volunteer. He spends hours talking with the old people, reading newspapers to them, and helping them clean their rooms. Besides volunteering, Zhou likes to come up with new ideas to solve real-life problems. Last month, he noticed that many students threw rubbish into the wrong bins (垃圾箱) . So he invented an automatic (自动的) rubbish sorting bin. It uses a smart camera to recognize different types of waste and puts them into the right bins.

What makes a good teenager? Recently, our school newspaper did a survey (调查) on this topic among students. The results are shown in the chart (图表) on the right.
He has kept doing this for over three years. “It is our duty to care for the elderly,” he says. “They have done so much for society.”
Because of this invention, he won first prize at the city’s science festival.
Zhou’s story shows us what a good teenager looks like in the new era. He inspires all the youth to play their part in making a better world.
