When the children first went to live at the white house, they talked about Father a lot and were always asking Mother some questions about him. But as time passed, their questions seemed to make Mother unhappy, so they stopped asking them. But they never forgot him.
Bobbie thought about Father often. She knew her mother was unhappy, and she worried a lot about that. And why was Father away for so long? Was there something that Mother wasn’t telling them?
The answer came on the day she went to the station to fetch the magazines. They were old magazines that people left on trains or in the waiting room. Perks said the children could have them to read, and one day Bobbie went to fetch them!
“I’ll just put some newspapers round the magazines to keep them together,” said Perks.
The magazines were heavy, and Bobbie stopped to rest on the way home. She sat on the grass and dropped them beside her. As she did this, she looked at an old newspaper and read some of the words on the page... and it was like a terrible dream.
She never remembered how she got home. But she went to her room and locked the door. Then she took the newspaper off the magazines and looked at it again. The words seemed to jump at her: FIVE YEARS IN PRISON FOR A SPY!
And the name of the “spy” was the name of her father.
Bobbie was very quiet at tea-time.
“Is anything wrong?” Mother asked her.
“I’m all right,” said Bobbie.
But after tea, Mother went up to Bobbie’s room. “What’s the matter?” She wanted to know.
For an answer, Bobbie took the newspaper from under her bed and showed it to her mother.
“Oh, Bobbie!” cried Mother. “You don’t believe it, do you? You don’t believe Daddy is a spy?”
“No!” said Bobbie.
“He’s good and honest and he’s done nothing wrong,” said Mother. “We have to remember that.”

Want to lose fat? There’s one method scientifically proven to work; eating a little less food than your body needs to fuel itself each day. Do that, and your body starts using its energy reserves—its stored fat—to make up the deficit.
It sounds straightforward. You dutifully keep track of the calories in every meal to make sure your daily intake stays less than your fixed limit, but your weight never changes at all. It’s frustrating and disheartening. But there’s good news: you’re not to blame.
Recent scientific findings suggest it’s almost impossible to count calories with any degree of accuracy, which explains why trying to lose weight by calorie counting is so hard. It’s not bad maths that trips most of us up, though. Generally, unless you diligently log every ingredient before you eat, humans just aren’t very good at recalling exactly what was on their plate, let alone the handful of snacks they ate without thinking. Given all that, it’s no surprise that studies suggest the average person underestimates their daily consumption by around 30 percent (roughly 600-750 calories), or about 10 digestive biscuits.
The very idea of working out calorie amounts is problematic. And that’s before we even consider the effect your individual biology can have. For instance, a 2023 study tested the outcomes of giving people a high-fibre diet, designed to feed their gut microbes With growing microbial communities in their guts, the scientists found that the participants in the study lost a little bit of weight — without eating less or feeling hungry — because they were absorbing fewer calories from their food.
“That means, depending on what you eat and how many microbes are thriving (旺盛繁殖) in your gut, some calories are used by you, while others feed the microbes.” says Professor Rosa Brown, a co-author of the study.
If all this is starting to make you think that calorie monitoring might be off the menu, you’d be right.
18.What does the underlined word “deficit” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Database. B.Shortfall. C.Nutrition. D.Weight.
19.What makes it hard for dieters to count calories?
A.Inaccuracy of intake records. B.Lack of tracking approaches.
C.Absence of scientific evidence. D.Complexity of calculation procedures.
20.What can we learn from the 2023 study?
A.Calorie absorption may vary. B.Eating less means losing weight.
C.Fibre reduces people’s hunger. D.Food calories determine body weight.
21.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Forget the Strict Diet B.Simplify Your Calorie Log
C.Skip the Dietary Math D.Adjust Your Diet Structure

Finally. 30 You need to take notes because you will not remember everything the teacher said. You’ll have to take down the notes so that you can study it after class.
Listening isn’t always easy. However, you’ll be much more successful in your classes if you follow these simple steps.
A.You’ll also need to look at the teacher.
B.Helping with each other is a good way.
C.You don’t need to take too many notes in class.
D.Taking notes also makes you pay attention to the class.

Sky Dancers
They fly up and down, here and there. They move their tails lightly, from side to side. They catch the wind and move quietly high in the sky. What are these things dancing in the wind? They are kites.
Kites have a long history. More than three thousand years ago, people in China made the first kites. They used bamboo—which is light and strong—to build the frames (框架). Then they added silk to make the kite.
The kite became an important symbol (象征) in China. They were used in many ways. For example, people flew kites to celebrate happy moments like birthdays. They also believed kites could help tell the future. Later, they used kites to study the weather. Even some old Chinese stories tell how people in the past used kites to win a fight.
Soon kites came to other parts of Asia. In Japan, kites were also popular because Japanese people, like people in China, believed that kites brought good luck. Like Chinese kites, Japanese kites also took the shape (形状) of large birds, fish and other different animals.
After a while, the kite found its way from Asia to Europe. In the 1600s, young English children learned to make kites. People named the new toy “kite” because it flew like a kite—a special kind of bird.
Today, children and grown-ups all over the world enjoy flying kites. They can be many different shapes, sizes, and colors. Kites today are often made of nylon (尼龙). Their frames may be light steel. Some kites are still made of paper and wood. Whatever they look like, kites are fun for people all over the world. So next time you have a chance, take a break! Go fly a kite!

17.What can we infer from the passage?

B.Perks wrote the news about Father in the old newspaper.
C.Mother kept the truth from the children in order not to hurt them.
D.Bobbie believed that her father was a spy after reading the newspaper.
第一段提到:“they talked about Father a lot and were always asking Mother some questions about him. But as time passed, their questions seemed to make Mother unhappy...”,说明让母亲不开心的问题是关于父亲的。 只有B项“Where is our father, Mum?”(爸爸在哪里,妈妈?)
文章后半部分Bobbie在报纸上看到的标题是:“FIVE YEARS IN PRISON FOR A SPY!”,且名字是她父亲的。
第九段母亲问:“Is anything wrong?”,之后母亲上楼去Bobbie的房间问:“What’s the matter?”。 (To ask Bobbie what was wrong with her)。
第一段提到“ But as time passed, their questions seemed to make Mother unhappy”母亲之前对父亲的事避而不谈,末段提到“He’s good and honest and he’s done nothing wrong”,在看到报纸后极力维护父亲的形象,暗示她为了保护孩子不受伤害或维持希望而隐瞒了父亲入狱的真相。
C
【答案】18.B 19.A 20.A 21.C
根据第一段“eating a little less food than your body needs to fuel itself each day. Do that, and your body starts using its energy reserves”可知deficit表示“差额、缺口”,对应shortfall。
根据第三段“Recent scientific findings suggest it’s almost impossible to count calories with any degree of accuracy...the average person underestimates their daily consumption”可知人们记录摄入的热量并不准确。
根据第四、五段“depending on what you eat and how many microbes are thriving in your gut, some calories are used by you, while others feed the microbes”可知人体吸收的热量是有差异的。
根据全文尤其是最后一段“If all this is starting to make you think that calorie monitoring might be off the menu, you’d be right.”

Something big is coming to Shenzhen. In November 2026, the city will host the 33rd APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting. This is a very important event for the Asia-Pacific region.
APEC stands for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation It has 21 member economies. China hosted APEC twice before—in Shanghai in 2001 and in Beijing in 2014. Now it is Shenzhen’s turn. Shenzhen will become the third Chinese city to host this meeting.
Shenzhen is a young and modern city. It is home to big tech companies like Huawei and Tencent. It is also a leader in new energy and digital technology. The APEC theme for 2026 is “Building an Asia-Pacific Community to Prosper Together.” Shenzhen’s spirit of innovation and openness fits this theme well. Also, Shenzhen is a city of immigrants (移民). People from all over China and the world come here to work and live. This makes Shenzhen a truly international city, ready to welcome guests from APEC economies.
Shenzhen is working hard to prepare for the big event. The city has many plans to welcome guests. For example, bus lines have put on new APEC-themed designs. Volunteers are learning how to help international visitors. Some walls in Longhua District are being painted with colorful street art by both local people and foreigners living in Shenzhen. A 3D floor painting called “Seeing the Future” was created near Shenzhen North Station by artists from different countries. A volunteer from Turkey named Esma Toprak said, “I am very happy to help introduce Shenzhen to visitors. I have lived here for 11 years. This event is a chance to show the world how beautiful Shenzhen is.”
22.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Shenzhen is the first Chinese city to host the APEC Leaders’ Meeting.

C.Only foreigners living in Shenzhen are painting the walls in Longhua District.
D.Esma Toprak has lived in Shenzhen for only 3 years.
23.Why are colorful wall paintings mentioned in the passage?
A.To show Shenzhen is ready to welcome APEC guests.
B.To tell readers that Longhua is a poor area.
C.To prove that only foreigners can paint walls.
D.To explain why Shenzhen is a fishing village.
24.What does Esma Toprak’s words suggest about Shenzhen?
A.Shenzhen still needs more time to finish all preparations for the APEC meeting.
B.Foreigners living in Shenzhen are willing to show Shenzhen’s beauty only to APEC guests.
C.Shenzhen has a welcoming and attractive environment for foreigners.
D.Shenzhen looks wonderful for visitors but is boring for long-term foreign residents.
25.What is the author’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To explain the history of APEC in detail.
B.To show that Shenzhen has more advantages than Shanghai and Beijing for hosting APEC.
C.To advise readers to become volunteers for APEC.
D.To introduce why Shenzhen was chosen and how it is preparing for APEC 2026.
【答案】22.B 23.A 24.C 25.D
第三段“The APEC theme for 2026 is ‘Building an Asia-Pacific Community to Prosper Together.’”
第四段“For example, bus lines have put on new APEC-themed designs. Volunteers are learning how to help international visitors. Some walls in Longhua District are being painted with colorful street art by both local people and foreigners living in Shenzhen.”
最后一段“A volunteer from Turkey named Esma Toprak said, ‘I am very happy to help introduce Shenzhen to visitors...This event is a chance to show the world how beautiful Shenzhen is.’”
