Lucas Longhurst, a former soldier, who sees school buses as vehicles for possibilities, now works with high school students to transform retired school buses into useful spaces to help their communities.
After leaving the military, Longhurst, seeking freedom and adventure, spent six months turning his first school bus into a rolling home. Locals began coming by to look at his bus and word spread that Longhurst had created something unusual and usable. In 2016, Longhurst was hired to build a bus as a mobile clinic to reach underserved communities. That experience planted a seed — he saw how a bus could go beyond mobility and become a lifeline. He wondered how he could expand that vision further.
Then in 2023, Waggener High School students in a low-income area approached him for help. They were members of the school’s Black Student Union (BSU). One of them noticed that every time he came to school, he would see classmates with junk food. “We realized that part of town had only two grocery stores to serve about 60,000 people,” a student said. Therefore, they decided to create a bus program, Grub on Wheels, which would deliver free, fresh foods to underserved areas.
Longhurst met regularly with the students to review designs and determine what he could build. They raised $40,000, and Longhurst personally donated $5,330 to help cover the cost. They cleared out the bus and raised its roof. “We want a lot of space inside the bus for shelving and a sink, and also set up solar panels and generators,” said a student. When completed, the bus will be a space where students will deliver food and clothes for charity drives, host events and also lead workshops.
“It’s more like creating usable art than traditional building,” said Longhurst. “And I wanted to share that inspiration with more people.”
4. What inspired Longhurst to use a bus to help people?
A. His work creating a rolling home. B. The locals’ admiration for his work.
C. His experience building a mobile clinic. D. The students’ request for food delivery.
5. Why was Grub on Wheels launched?
A. To give away healthy food. B. To increase local income.
C. To serve as an art workshop. D. To replace traditional stores.
6. What can be inferred about Grub on Wheels?
A. It was designed by students.
B. It will serve multiple functions.
C. It has already been put into use.
D. It was mainly funded by Longhurst.
7. What can best describe Longhurst?
A. Patient and profit-seeking. B. Creative and public-spirited.
C. Disciplined and book-smart. D. Competitive and solution-focused.

Want to lose fat? There’s one method scientifically proven to work: eating a little less food than your body needs to fuel itself each day. Do that, and your body starts using its energy reserves — its stored fat — to make up the deficit.
It sounds straightforward. You dutifully keep track of the calories in every meal to make sure your daily intake stays less than your fixed limit, but the number on your weight scale never changes at all. It’s frustrating and disheartening. But there’s good news: you’re not to blame.
Recent scientific findings suggest it’s almost impossible to count calories with any degree of accuracy, which explains why trying to lose weight by calorie counting is so hard. It’s not bad maths that trips most of us up, though. Generally, unless you diligently log every ingredient before you eat, humans just aren’t very good at recalling exactly what was on their plate, let alone the handful of snacks they ate without thinking. Given all that, it’s no surprise that studies suggest the average person underestimates their daily consumption by around 30 per cent (roughly 600-750 calories), or about 10 digestive biscuits.
The very idea of working out calorie amounts is problematic. And that’s before we even consider the effect your individual biology can have. For instance, a 2023 study tested the outcomes of giving people a high-fibre diet, designed to feed their gut microbes With growing microbial communities in their guts, the scientists found that the participants in the study lost a little bit of weight — without eating less or feeling hungry — because they were absorbing fewer calories from their food.
“That means, depending on what you eat and how many microbes are thriving (旺盛繁殖) in your gut, some calories are used by you, while others feed the microbes.” says Professor Rosa Brown, a co-author of the study.
If all this is starting to make you think that calorie monitoring might be off the menu, you’d be right.
8. What does the underlined word “deficit” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Database. B. Shortfall. C. Nutrition. D. Weight.
9. What makes it hard for dieters to count calories?
A. Inaccuracy of intake records. B. Lack of tracking approaches.
C. Absence of scientific evidence. D. Complexity of calculation procedures.
10. What can we learn from the 2023 study?
A. Calorie absorption may vary. B. Eating less means losing weight.
C. Fibre reduces people’s hunger. D. Food calories determine body weight.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Forget the Strict Diet B. Simplify Your Calorie Log
C. Skip the Dietary Math D. Adjust Your Diet Structure
D
Imagine you have to design a new society from scratch. You can decide how wealth, power, and opportunities will be distributed. But there is a catch: you do not know what position you will end up in. You could be rich or poor, talented or disabled, a member of any race or religion. This is called the veil (面纱) of ignorance, proposed by philosopher John Rawls in 1971.
Rawls argued that if people reason behind this veil, they would choose two main principles of justice. First, everyone should have the most extensive basic liberties, such as freedom of speech and assembly. Second, social and economic inequalities are allowed only if they benefit the least advantaged members of society and if everyone has a fair chance to compete for better positions.
Why would rational people choose these rules? Rawls believed that the veil of ignorance forces us to be unprejudiced. Since no one wants to end up at the bottom, we would design a society that protects the vulnerable (脆弱的). Even the rich and powerful would agree, because behind the veil they might be born into poverty.
Critics offer several objections. Some say the veil is unrealistic — people do not make decisions without knowing their own identity. Others argue that Rawls’s theory ignores the value of effort and risk-taking. If the least advantaged are always protected, why would anyone work hard or innovate?
Defenders respond that Rawls does not forbid inequality; he merely limits it. A doctor can earn more than a cleaner, but only if that higher salary encourages doctors to work where they are needed, and only if the cleaner still has a decent life.
The veil of ignorance remains one of the most influential ideas in modern political philosophy. It asks a simple but powerful question: if you didn’t know who you would be, what kind of world would you want?
12. What is the primary function of the veil of ignorance?
A. To hide the final outcome of one’s decision.
B. To guarantee equal wealth and power for all.
C. To remove prejudices by hiding one’s position.
D. To ensure the freedom of speech and assembly.
13. What do we know about Rawls’s view on inequalities?
A. They restrict people’s basic rights.
B. They should be ruled out completely.
C. They can exist on certain conditions.
D. They harm the interest of the disadvantaged.
14. What concern do some critics have about Rawls’s theory?
A. It may overrate human rational thinking.
B. It may discourage people from hard work.
C. It may cause less reward for individual efforts.
D. It may bring unfair protection for the advantaged.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards the veil of ignorance?
A. Indifferent. B. Favourable. C. Doubtful. D. Critical.

During my college years in Bangalore in the early 1980s, there was no internet, popular television or social media. My friends and I enjoyed simple, real world pleasures: interesting books, endless casual chats and, my personal favourite, wonderful movies every Saturday. Busy with crowded cafés and hurrying crowds of citizens, Bangalore was always lively, and local cinemas were its greatest attraction.
One bright weekend, my close friend Sumi and I planned to head for a well-known theatre on Brigade Road. We climbed into a noisy rickshaw (人力车), which rattled and wound its way through heavy traffic. Brigade Road was in complete chaos, packed with speeding bikes, honking cars and busy passers-by.
When we finally arrived near the theatre, I stepped carelessly onto the uneven roadside and suddenly slipped. Sharp burning pain shot through my right ankle. I cried out loud, instantly drawing the attention of surrounding strangers. Curious locals gathered around to stare out of pure curiosity, yet nobody reached out a hand to offer help.
Sumi hurried about desperately, waving her arms to stop a rickshaw. Unfortunately, every available vehicle had already gone past. She grew upset and helpless, too nervous to turn up and ask unfamiliar strangers for assistance.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Just then, a soft-spoken polite young man walked past.

C 5. A 6. B 7. B

B 9. A 10. A 11. C
根据第一段“eating a little less food than your body needs to fuel itself each day. Do that, and your body starts using its energy reserves — its stored fat — to make up the … (每天摄入比身体所需略少的食物。这样做,你的身体就会开始使用其能量储备——储存的脂肪——来弥补……。)”可知,前文提到了(每天摄入比身体所需略少的食物,还提到了你的身体就会开始使用其能量储备,可推理出划线词的含义为“不足”,与B项“Shortfall(不足,短缺)”意思相近。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Recent scientific findings suggest it’s almost impossible to count calories with any degree of accuracy, which explains why trying to lose weight by calorie counting is so hard. It’s not bad maths that trips most of us up, though. Generally, unless you diligently log every ingredient before you eat, humans just aren’t very good at recalling exactly what was on their plate, let alone the handful of snacks they ate without thinking. (近期的科学研究表明,想要精准计算卡路里几乎是不可能的,这也解释了为什么靠计算卡路里减肥如此困难。不过,困扰大多数人的并不是计算失误。一般来说,除非你在进食前认真记录每一样食材,否则人们很难准确回忆起自己盘中究竟吃了什么,更不用说那些不知不觉吃下的少量零食。)”以及“studies suggest the average person underestimates their daily consumption by around 30 per cent (研究表明普通人每天低估约30%的摄入量)”可知,让节食者难以计算卡路里的原因是摄入记录的不准确。
根据第四段“With growing microbial communities in their guts, the scientists found that the participants in the study lost a little bit of weight — without eating less or feeling hungry — because they were absorbing fewer calories from their food. (随着肠道微生物群落的生长,研究人员发现参与者在没有少吃、也没有感到饥饿的情况下减了一点重,因为他们从食物中吸收的卡路里变少了。)”以及第五段“depending on what you eat and how many microbes are thriving in your gut, some calories are used by you, while others feed the microbes. (取决于你吃什么以及肠道中有多少微生物在旺盛繁殖,有些卡路里被你吸收,有些则喂养了微生物。)”可知,卡路里的吸收因人而异(受肠道菌群影响)。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“It sounds straightforward. You dutifully keep track of the calories in every meal to make sure your daily intake stays less than your fixed limit, but the number on your weight scale never changes at all. It’s frustrating and disheartening. But there’s good news: you’re not to blame. (这听起来简单明了。你认真记录每一餐的卡路里,确保每日摄入量低于设定的上限,可是体重秤上的数字却丝毫不变。这让人倍感沮丧、灰心丧气。不过有个好消息:这并不是你的问题。)”以及最后一段“If all this is starting to make you think that calorie monitoring might be off the menu, you’d be right. (如果这一切让你觉得卡路里监测可能行不通,你是对的。)”可知,本文说的是通过卡路里赤字减肥法却不见效的挫败感,原因是人类回忆饮食不准确,并通过研究证明卡路里吸收受生物学因素影响,末段劝读者别再纠结于卡路里的数字计算,C项“Skip the Dietary Math (跳过饮食数学计算)”最契合主旨。
B. Favourable. C. Doubtful. D. Critical.
C 13. C 14. B 15. B

根据第二段的“Second, social and economic inequalities are allowed only if they benefit the least advantaged members of society and if everyone has a fair chance to compete for better positions.(第二,社会和经济不平等只有在有利于社会中最弱势成员,且每个人都有公平竞争更好职位的机会时才被允许)”及第五段“Defenders respond that Rawls does not forbid inequality; he merely limits it.(辩护者回应称,罗尔斯并不禁止不平等,他只是限制它)”可知,罗尔斯认为不平等可以在特定条件下存在。
根据第四段的“Others argue that Rawls’s theory ignores the value of effort and risk‑taking. If the least advantaged are always protected, why would anyone work hard or innovate?(部分批评者提出质疑:该理论倾向于保护社会处境最弱势的群体,由此带来一种潜在隐患 —— 人们奋斗创新的动力可能会被削弱)”可知,批评者担忧该理论会因为过度保护弱势群体而削弱人们努力工作和创新的动力。
根据最后一段“The veil of ignorance remains one of the most influential ideas in modern political philosophy. It asks a simple but powerful question(无知之幕仍然是现代政治哲学中最具影响力的思想之一。它提出了一个简单但有力的问题)”及前文对罗尔斯理论的客观介绍(包括辩护者的回应)可知,作者认为该理论具有深远影响且发人深省,整体持肯定和赞赏的态度。

Yung recalled a collaboration with artist Ke Jun, who performed the experimental Kunqu Flee by Night. Ke portrayed Lin Chong, ____39____ classic character from the novel Water Margin. In the first half, Ke performed in traditional costume and makeup. As he changed into modern attire, a pre-recorded video was projected on stage, showing him ____40____ (systematic) removing his facial makeup. This “unmasking” moment pushed him ____41____ (face) his true identity and achieve a spiritual connection with the character’s struggle for survival.
Co-organizer Liu Xiaoyi emphasizes that artists must recognize that art should extend ____42____ mere entertainment. He argues that looking beneath the surface ____43____ (transform) cultural exchanges from simple transactions (交易) into deep connections. Success in experimental theater is measured by the boldness of creative risks and the extent to ____44____ a performance can challenge the audience’s preconceptions. 47.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Just then, a soft-spoken polite young man walked past.

After the doctor checked my sprained ankle, I was asked to stay in the hospital.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Just then, a soft-spoken polite young man walked past. Seeing me sitting on the ground with a swollen ankle, he stopped at once and asked about my injury. He calmly comforted the anxious Sumi and helped me stand up gently. Then he managed to stop a rickshaw, supporting me to get in. He told the driver the nearest hospital and insisted on accompanying us there, refusing our repeated thanks. His calm kindness stood in sharp contrast to the onlookers who just watched.
After the doctor checked my sprained ankle, I was asked to stay in the hospital. As we waited for treatment, the young man stayed with us until my family was informed. Later he left without leaving his name. That day we missed the movie, but I received a priceless lesson. While many people merely stare at others’ trouble, some strangers are willing to give a hand. This unforgettable experience has kept reminding me to pass on kindness whenever I can.
