Last summer, I decided to transform it: I bought seeds, soil, and basic tools, eager to start my gardening project. The first few weeks were disheartening. The seeds either failed to grow or were eaten by birds. I watered diligently, adjusted sunlight, and tended to them constantly, yet nothing grew. I was ready to quit, convinced I had no green thumb. One afternoon, my neighbor Mr. Henderson, who tended his roses daily, watched me and said gently: “You’re trying too hard. Plants need care, but also space to grow on their own.” His words made sense. I relaxed: watered less often, let rain do its part, and stopped overthinking. Soon, tiny green buds emerged. By August, my backyard bloomed with color and scent. I’d sit there evenings, tasting tea, amazed by their beauty. Then a storm hit — strong winds knocked over my sunflower stalks (茎秆). Heartbroken, I planned to pull them up, but Mr. Henderson appeared again: “Don’t give up. The strongest plants survive storms — they’ll heal if you give them a chance.” Weeks later, those sunflowers stood taller and stronger, their golden heads turning to the sun. I realized gardening wasn’t just about growing plants. All things have their own rhythm of recovery, what we struggle to control often fails, while what we gently trust finds its way back to light. The world does not always bend to our hurry, and neither do the things we care for. Some winds are meant to strengthen us, not break us. This summer, I’ll plant more seeds, both in the garden and in my heart. Growth takes time, and even life’s hardest moments are our greatest teachers. 19. What does the underlined phrase “green thumb” in paragraph 2 mean? A. The ability to select seeds.   B. A natural talent for gardening. C. The habit of tending flowers.   D. A preference for green plants. 20. How did the author respond to Mr. Henderson’s advice? A. She let nature take its course.   B. She stopped watering the seeds. C. She invited him to teach her.   D. She learned to accept her mistakes. 21. Why does the author mention the sunflowers? A. To show the risks of gardening.   B. To highlight the power of storms. C. To stress the weakness of sunflowers.  D. To illustrate the toughness of plants. 22. Which of the following best describes the author’s personality? A. Curious and organized.   B. Courageous and respectful. C. Reflective and determined.  D. Disciplined and independent. B 20. A 21. D 22. 根据第二段“I watered diligently, adjusted sunlight, and tended to them constantly, yet nothing grew. I was ready to quit, convinced I had no green thumb. (我努力浇水,调节阳光,不断照料它们,但什么也没长出来。我准备放弃,因为我确信自己没有green thumb)”可知,作者辛勤照料却毫无收获,因此准备放弃,并确信自己没有园艺天赋,green thumb在这里指的是“园艺天赋”。 【20题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“I relaxed: watered less often, let rain do its part, and stopped overthinking.(我放宽心了:减少浇水,让雨水发挥作用,不再过度操心)”可知,作者听从了邻居的建议,不再过度干预,这表明作者选择了顺其自然。 根据第四段“Then a storm hit — strong winds knocked over my sunflower stalks (茎秆).(接着,一场风暴袭来——强风刮倒了我的向日葵茎)”以及第五段“Weeks later, those sunflowers stood taller and stronger, their golden heads turning to the sun. I realized gardening wasn’t just about growing plants. (几周后,那些向日葵长得更高更茁壮,金色的花盘向着太阳。我意识到园艺不仅仅是种植植物)”可知,作者借向日葵的例子来阐明植物顽强的生命力,并以此引出“逆境使人更坚强”的人生感悟。 【22题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“His words made sense. I relaxed: watered less often, let rain do its part, and stopped overthinking.(他的话很有道理。我放宽心了:减少浇水,让雨水发挥作用,不再过度操心)”、第五段“I realized gardening wasn’t just about growing plants. (我意识到园艺不仅仅是种植植物)”以及最后一段“This summer, I’ll plant more seeds, both in the garden and in my heart. (今年夏天,我会播下更多种子,种在花园,也种在心里)”可知,作者在园艺过程中遇到挫折时,能够听取他人建议并观察植物的生长,最终从向日葵风雨后的恢复中悟出了深刻的人生哲理,这说明作者善于反思;作者决定今年夏天继续种下更多种子,把困难当成老师,说明作者是有决心的。 C Has your child ever washed up a cup or put out the bins? Have they made their bed, ironed a shirt or helped to lay the table? Only 44% of all 14 and 15-year-olds, according to a survey by Parentkind, help with chores. Some parents in the 21st century may just be too nice. Instead of letting children stay in their rooms playing games all day, bringing them cups of tea, or asking if they want a chat, it would be better to teach them to wash the kitchen floor, hang up the cloths, and take out the trash. Children increasingly aren’t given any responsibilities at home. Only 18% of those aged 16 to 24 have ever had a paid part-time job, compared with 48% of teenagers who had part-time jobs at the turn of the century. Children no longer work hard for their pocket money, weeding for their neighbour or babysitting. Money just arrives in their bank account. Besides, there is an understandable belief that Generation Z have had a tough time. Children are told by their parents to focus on their grades and to practise sport. As a result, parents have become kinder fathers and mothers, less prepared to have fights over cleaning or demand their daughter walks to school. However, there is a strong link between those who do the most housework and those who succeed at school. As Jason, the chief executive of Parentkind, points out, “Chores are not punishment; they are the first lessons in teamwork and self-reliance.” These habits evidently develop into responsibility at school and reliability at work. If parents want happier and healthier children, it is essential to not underestimate the value of chores and need to teach their children to take responsibilities for the family. 23. What is the purpose of asking questions in the first paragraph? A. To show the importance of doing chores.   B. To tell readers how to do housework. C. To introduce a worrying phenomenon.    D. To illustrate the role of parents at home. 24. What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A. The amount of chores that kids should do.   B. The reasons why teens do less chores at home. C. The rewards of doing housework for children.  D. The impact of spending much time on the games. 25. Which is the benefit of teens’ doing chores according to the text? A. They will never give up their present jobs.   B. They will become more gentle parents. C. They will make more money in the future.   D. They will be more trusty and dependable. 26. What does the text mainly talk about? A. Chores are significant for children’s development. B. Parents should spend more time with their children. C. Children today do less housework than they used to. D. Children today are too busy to help with housework. C 24. B 25. D 26. 根据第一段“Has your child ever washed up a cup or put out the bins? Have they made their bed, ironed a shirt or helped to lay the table?(你的孩子有没有洗过杯子、倒过垃圾?有没有整理过床铺、熨过衬衫或者帮忙摆放餐具?)”和第二段“Only 18% of those aged 16 to 24 have ever had a paid part-time job, compared with 48% of teenagers who had part-time jobs at the turn of the century.(在16至24岁的群体中,仅有18%曾经做过有薪兼职;而世纪之交时,有48%的青少年打过零工)”可知,开头连续问孩子有没有做过家务,目的是引出话题:现在孩子做家务很少,这是一个令人担忧的现象。 根据第三段“Children increasingly aren’t given any responsibilities at home. ...Children no longer work hard for their pocket money, weeding for their neighbour or babysitting. Money just arrives in their bank account. Besides, there is an understandable belief that Generation Z have had a tough time. Children are told by their parents to focus on their grades and to practise sport. As a result, parents have become kinder fathers and mothers, less prepared to have fights over cleaning or demand their daughter walks to school.(如今的孩子在家越来越不承担任何家务责任。…… 通读全文,再根据最后一段“If parents want happier and healthier children, it is essential to not underestimate the value of chores and need to teach their children to take responsibilities for the family.(如果父母想让孩子更快乐、更健康,就绝不能低估家务的价值,并且要教会孩子为家庭承担责任)”可知,文章开篇通过一系列问题引出话题,接着指出如今孩子在家承担家务少的现象,分析了原因,还阐述了做家务与孩子在学校成功之间的联系,最后强调父母要重视家务的价值并教孩子独立。 D Understanding everyday conversation requires more than just knowing the literal meanings of words; it includes understanding the context in which they are spoken. For example, when it’s raining heavily, saying “lovely weather” is clearly sarcastic (讽刺的). This ability to work out the real meaning from non-literal language is known as pragmatic (语用的) language ability, which includes understanding humor, stress, and voice change. Evelina Fedorenko, an MIT professor, and her coworkers have found that these skills can be grouped based on the types of guesses they require. Their study of 800 people identified three main groups of pragmatic skills: guesses based on social traditions and rules, knowledge of how the physical world works, and explaining differences in voice, which can show stress or emotion. Past research on language understanding has mainly focused on literal meanings and how words fit together. However, Fedorenko notes that context is very important. For example, the phrase “people are leaving” can mean the party is ending if it’s late, or the party isn’t good if it’s early. To explore pragmatic language skills, Fedorenko and Edward Gibson, an MIT professor of brain and cognitive (认知的) sciences, used an “individual differences” approach, studying many people as they perform various tasks. This method helps determine whether the same brain processes are responsible for different tasks. The researchers created 20 tasks, including understanding humor, sarcasm, and voice changes that influence the meaning of the sentence. Among the first 400 people who took part in the research, the researchers found that the tasks fell into three groups: social context, general world knowledge, and voice. Testing another 400 people supported these groups. Future work aims to use brain imaging to link these pragmatic parts to specific brain regions. This research could also help study people with autism (自闭症), who may struggle with social signals, and compare pragmatic language use across different cultures. 27. Why is pragmatic language ability in conversation important? A. It improves reading speed greatly.    B. It helps memorize more vocabulary. C. It focuses on correct grammar rules.   D. It allows understanding beyond words. 28. What did Fedorenko’s study find about pragmatic skills? A. Sarcasm is the hardest to understand.   B. Brain processes are exactly the same. C. They can be grouped into three types.   D. People with autism lack language skills. 29. How did the researchers conduct their study? A. By testing participants with diverse tasks.  B. By tracking people’s daily conversations. C. By collecting brain images from patients.  D. By comparing languages across cultures. 30. What practical use may this research have? A. Curing cognitive difficulties in brain disease. B. Standardizing language rules across diverse cultures. C. Replacing existing brain imaging scanning technology. D. Aiding individuals with social communication barriers. D 28. C 29. A 30. 根据第一段第一句“Understanding everyday conversation requires more than just knowing the literal meanings of words; it includes understanding the context in which they are spoken. (理解日常对话需要的不仅仅是知道单词的字面意思;它还包括理解这些话被说出的语境。)”及第三句“This ability to work out the real meaning from non-literal language is known as pragmatic (语用的) language ability, which includes understanding humor, stress, and voice change. (这种从非字面语言中推断出真实含义的能力被称为语用语言能力,它包括理解幽默、重音和声音变化。)”可知,日常对话的理解不能只停留在单词的字面意思上,还需要结合语境,而从非字面语言中推断真实含义的能力正是语用语言能力,这种能力包括理解幽默、重音和声音变化,说明语用语言能力能帮助人们理解字面之外的含义。 【28题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段内容“Evelina Fedorenko, an MIT professor, and her coworkers have found that these skills can be grouped based on the types of guesses they require. Their study of 800 people identified three main groups of pragmatic skills: guesses based on social traditions and rules, knowledge of how the physical world works, and explaining differences in voice, which can show stress or emotion. (埃维莉娜·费多连科是麻省理工学院的一位教授,她和同事们发现,这些技能可以根据它们所需猜测的类型来分组。他们对800人的研究确定了三大类语用技能:基于社会传统和规则的猜测、关于物理世界如何运作的知识,以及解释声音差异的能力,这些声音差异可以表现出压力或情绪。)”可知,语用技能可以被划分为社会传统和规则猜测、物理世界运作知识、解释声音差异这三大类。 【29题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段第一句“To explore pragmatic language skills, Fedorenko and Edward Gibson, an MIT professor of brain and cognitive (认知的) sciences, used an “individual differences” approach, studying many people as they perform various tasks. (为了探究语用语言技能,费多连科和麻省理工学院脑与认知科学教授爱德华·吉布森采用了一种“个体差异”研究方法,研究许多人在执行各种任务时的表现。)”可知,研究人员通过让参与者执行多种不同的任务来进行这项研究。 【30题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段最后一句“This research could also help study people with autism (自闭症), who may struggle with social signals, and compare pragmatic language use across different cultures. There may be times when you may feel that enveloping your message in a generous coat of “nice” will make communication with others better. ____31____ Sugarcoating your words — whatever your reasons are — not only does not push meaningful relationships forward but may actually endanger healthy interactions. While, at best, sugarcoating can be an attempt at kindness, at worst, it could be viewed as a form of manipulation — trying to communicate in a way that controls the other person’s experience, instead of allowing them to have their own real reaction. ____32____ “For many people, love may have felt conditional when they were young,” says psychologist Carolyn Hextall. “As a result, they made an unconscious decision: being pleasing, agreeable, or undemanding was the safest way to be accepted and connected.” ____33____ For example, they may notice that they would rather agree with others, stay quiet, or soften their true feelings in their workplaces because they fear the consequence of voicing their own thoughts. Opposed to sugarcoating, saltcoating goes in the opposite direction. ____34____ But it often crosses the line from being honest to being rude. People who use saltcoating often ignore others’ feelings, speaking their minds without any consideration, which easily leads to misunderstandings and conflicts. To avoid these, Carolyn suggests stopping using global, absolute expressions such as “you always cancel plans without asking me first” or “you never listen to me”. ____35____ Instead, be specific in your feedback, and use “I” statements, which clearly communicate your experience without assigning any blame. For example, you might say: “When you said you’d meet me and then canceled, I felt upset and hurt.” This centers your emotional experience, and helps the other person understand the impact of their behavior. A. This is why sugarcoating is so common. B. Often, sugarcoating is deeply rooted in people. C. It can be presented as being straight and direct. D. Such statements tend to make people guarded quickly. E. But a nice wrapper does not necessarily make a gift better. F. As they grow older, this early pattern may still stay with them. G. These two approaches are two extremes that are better off avoided. E 32. B 33. F 34. C 35. 【31题详解】 上文“There may be times when you may feel that enveloping your message in a generous coat of “nice” will make communication with others better. (有时候你可能觉得用大量好听的话包装自己想说的内容会让和别人的沟通更顺畅)”提出人们的一种想法,下文“Sugarcoating your words — whatever your reasons are — not only does not push meaningful relationships forward but may actually endanger healthy interactions. (粉饰话语,无论出于什么原因,不仅无法推动有意义的关系发展,还可能危害良性交流)”转折指出这种做法的弊端,E选项“But a nice wrapper does not necessarily make a gift better. (但是好看的包装不一定会让礼物更好)”承接上文比喻,形成转折,引出下文观点,符合语境。 【32题详解】 下文““For many people, love may have felt conditional when they were young,” says psychologist Carolyn Hextall. (心理学家Carolyn Hextall说:“对很多人而言,在小时候感受到的爱是有条件的。”)”解释人们粉饰话语的根源,B选项“Often, sugarcoating is deeply rooted in people. (通常来说,粉饰话语这种行为在人们心中根深蒂固)”总起本段,引出后面的原因分析,符合语境。 【33题详解】 上文“As a result, they made an unconscious decision: being pleasing, agreeable, or undemanding was the safest way to be accepted and connected. (结果,他们无意识认定:讨好别人、随和、不提出要求是获得接纳、建立联结最稳妥的方式)”讲述童年形成的想法,下文“For example, they may notice that they would rather agree with others, stay quiet, or soften their true feelings in their workplaces because they fear the consequence of voicing their own thoughts. (例如,他们会发现在职场中自己宁愿附和他人、保持沉默或者弱化真实感受,因为他们害怕表达自己想法的后果)”举例说明人们长大之后的表现,F选项“As they grow older, this early pattern may still stay with them. (随着慢慢长大,这种早年形成的模式可能依然伴随着他们)”承接上文童年经历,引出下文成年后的例子,符合语境。 【34题详解】 上文“Opposed to sugarcoating, saltcoating goes in the opposite direction. (和粉饰话语相反,直白尖锐式表达走向另一个极端)”介绍直白尖锐式表达,下文“But it often crosses the line from being honest to being rude. (但是它常常越过底线,从坦诚变成无礼)”转折说明直白尖锐式表达的问题,C选项“It can be presented as being straight and direct. (它会表现得坦率直白)”中It指代直白尖锐式表达,先介绍直白尖锐式表达的表面特点,和下文构成转折关系,符合语境。 【35题详解】 上文“To avoid these, Carolyn suggests stopping using global, absolute expressions such as “you always cancel plans without asking me first” or “you never listen to me”. (为了避免这些问题,Carolyn建议不要使用笼统、绝对化的表达,比如“你总是不先问我就取消计划”或者“你从来不听我说话”)”提到不要使用这类绝对表述,下文“Instead, be specific in your feedback, and use “I” statements, which clearly communicate your experience without assigning any blame. (相反,反馈要具体,使用以“我”开头的表述,清楚地传达你的经历,而不归咎于任何人)”给出替代方案,D选项“Such statements tend to make people guarded quickly. (这类话语很容易让人立刻产生戒备心理)”说明上文这类绝对表达的坏处,衔接上下文,符合语境。 第四部分  语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白的最佳选项。 Imran Nuri grew up with high expectations from his parents. C Has your child ever washed up a cup or put out the bins? D Understanding everyday conversation requires more than just knowing the literal meanings of words; it includes understanding the context in which they are spoken. Imran Nuri grew up with high expectations from his parents. I hadn't, until one day my five-year-old son asked me whether there was ham in a hamburger. There isn't. This made me realize that there's no egg in eggplant either. Neither is there pine nor apple in pineapple. This got me thinking how English can be a crazy language to learn. However, this craziness is not without reason. In fact, English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race. That is why when I wind up my watch, it starts, but when I wind up this passage, it ends.
