In medical school and throughout his career as a neonatologist, William Cashore was often asked to read and correct others’ work. Little did they know that he was a spelling champion, with a trophy (奖品) at home to prove it. Cashore won the Scripps National Spelling Bee in 1954 at age 14. Now 84, he’s the oldest living champion of the contest, which dates back to 1925. As contestants from this year’s competition headed home, he reflected on his experience and the effect it had on him.
Cashore credits his parents for helping him prepare for his trip to Washington, D.C., for the spelling bee. His mother was an elementary school teacher and his father was a lab technician with a talent for taking words apart and putting them back together.
When the field narrowed to two competitors, the other boy misspelled “uncinate”, which means bent like a hook. Cashore spelled it correctly, then clinched the title with the word “transept”, an architectural term for the transverse part of a cross-shaped church.
Cashore, who was given $500 and an encyclopedia set, enjoyed a brief turn as a celebrity. He didn’t brag about his accomplishment after returning to Pennsylvania, but the experience quietly shaped him in multiple ways. “It gave me much more self-confidence and also gave me a sense that it’s very important to try to get things as correct as possible, he said. “I’ve always been that way, and I still feel that way. If people are careless about spelling and writing, you wonder if they’re careless about their thinking.”
“Preparing for a spelling bee today requires more concentration and technique than it did decades ago,” Cashore said. “The vocabulary of the words are far, far more technical. The English language, in the meantime, has imported a great many words from foreign languages which were not part of the English language when I was in eighth grade,” he added.
4. What can we learn about Cashore from the first two paragraphs?
A. He is the best ever spelling champion.
B. He prepared alone for the spelling bee.
C. He used his spelling ability to help others.
D. He preferred to show off his spelling talent.
5. What does the word “clinched” underlined in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Won. B. Declined. C. Removed. D. Gave.
6. How did the spelling bee competition affect Cashore?
A. It helped him start his career. B. It strengthened his confidence.
C. It limited his way of thinking. D. It brought him lasting popularity.
7. What should we do to prepare for today’s spelling bee according to Cashore?
A. Learn multiple languages. B. Go abroad for language study.
C. Be a remarkable technician. D. Try to improve relevant skills.

AI fakery (伪造) is quickly becoming one of the biggest problems confronting us online. Deceptive pictures, videos and audio are increasing as a result of the rise and misuse of generative artificial intelligence tools.
With AI deepfakes cropping up almost every day, it’s getting harder to tell what’s real from what’s not. Video and image generators like DALL-E, make it easy for people without any technical skills to create deepfakes — just type a request and the system spits it out.
These fake images might seem harmless. But they can be used to carry out fraud and identity theft. Here is how to avoid being cheated by deepfakes.
Face-swapping is one of the most common deepfake methods. Experts advise looking closely at the edges of the face. Does the facial skin tone match the rest of the head or the body? Are the edges of the face sharp enough? If you suspect video of a person speaking has been doctored, look at their mouth. Do their lip movements match the audio perfectly?
Sometimes the context matters. Take a beat to consider whether what you’re seeing is reasonable. The Poynter journalism website advises that if you see a public figure doing something that seems “exaggerated, unrealistic or not in character”, it could be a deepfake.
Another approach is to use AI to fight AI. Microsoft has developed an authenticator tool that can analyze photos or videos to give a confidence score on whether it’s been manipulated (操控). Chipmaker Intel’s Fake Catcher uses algorithms (算法) to analyze an image’s pixels (像素) to determine if it’s real or fake.
All this being said, artificial intelligence has been advancing with breakneck speed and AI models are being trained on Internet data to produce increasingly higher-quality content with fewer flaws. That means there’s no guarantee that this advice will still be valid even a year from now.
Experts say it might even be dangerous to put the burden on ordinary people to become digital Sherlocks because it could give them a false sense of confidence as it becomes increasingly difficult, even for trained eyes, to spot deepfakes.
8. What is the concern regarding AI fakery?
A. The decline in artistic creativity. B. The difficulty in identifying truth.
C. The ease of technical skill acquisition. D. The rise in AI-generated entertainment.
9. Which image is likely generated by AI deepfake technology?
A. An image with consistent skin tones. B. An image with proper public figure action.
C. An image with unclear edges around the face. D. An image with perfect lip movement with audio.
10. Which of the following is the method for an AI tool to detect fake media?
A. Training AI models on Internet data. B. Applying machine learning algorithms.
C. Evaluating the likelihood of media manipulation. D. Producing higher-quality content with fewer flaws.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards the public’s ability to detect deepfakes?
A. Optimistic. B. Pessimistic. C. Neutral. D. Dismissive.
D
For years, smartphones and computers have threatened to make handwriting outdated. As a reporter who now works primarily on a keyboard, I’m worried that even my carefully developed handwriting — once modeled after my engineer mother’s perfect block letters — is fading. This concern reflects a broader societal shift:emails replaced letters, smartphones replaced paper notes and calendars, and US schools have increasingly prioritized typing over writing. More recently, AI has further reduced the need for humans to write anything down, making handwriting seem truly set to disappear.
Yet this decline may carry drawbacks that are often ignored. Research by Karen Ray at the University of Newcastle suggests that children who grow up holding devices rather than pencils often show lower overall motor proficiency than previous standards, potentially leaving them less prepared to learn handwriting when they enter kindergarten. Actually, handwriting really matters because most experts agree that it offers significant cognitive benefits. According to psychologist Robert Wiley, writing by hand helps students learn to read and improves memory more effectively than typing. Beyond the classroom, STEM professionals still need basic handwriting skills for problem-solving and lab notes.
Beyond these concerns, overreliance on keyboards can also lead to “character amnesia (提笔忘 字)” — a phenomenon where people gradually forget how to physically form letters they rarely write. Surprisingly, this very dependence on digital tools may now cause a handwriting comeback. To fight cheating with ChatGPT, university professors are reportedly bringing back handwritten exams, driving up sales of traditional “blue books”.
However, this return raises serious fairness concerns. As author Anne Trubek notes, judging students by their handwriting risks punishing those with poor handwriting regardless of their actual cognitive ability or the quality of their arguments.
Ultimately, as AI increasingly offloads critical thinking from humans, handwriting may evolve from an endangered skill into one of the few remaining ways to prove authentic human comprehension. Like students showing their work in math class to prove they understand what calculators do, putting pen to paper is becoming a vital demonstration of genuine understanding.
12. How does the author introduce the topic in Paragraph 1?
A. By analyzing social changes.
B. By comparing old and new habits.
C. By sharing a personal experience.
D. B y predicting the end of handwriting.
13. What is mainly discussed in paragraph 2?
A. Experts’ disagreement on handwriting.
B. The cognitive benefits of writing by hand.
C. T he motor skills of device-heavy children.
D. T he hidden costs of handwriting’s decline.
14. Why are handwritten exams reportedly being brought back?
A. To address character amnesia.
B. To improve students’ handwriting.
C. To promote the sales of “blue books”.
D. To limit students’ reliance on AI tools in assessments.
15. What is the best title for the passage?
A. An old skill gaining new value in the Al age
B. A debated method to fight against AI cheating
C. Digital progress pushing handwriting into decline
D. Cognitive edges of handwriting versus typing and AI?

____19____. Lining up your most mentally taxing tasks with your natural peaks (顶峰) of focus is key to concentration, says Mark. Her research has found that, on average, these high points occur around 10 a.m. in the morning and around 2 — 3 p.m. in the afternoon. ____20____, depending on whether you’re more of a morning person or a night person. “If a person is an early type, their peak focus would be earlier — before 10 a.m.,” explains Mark. “And if they’re a late type, their peak focus will be later.”
A. There are differences around these times
B. Don’t expect to always be focused and productive
C. One solution to this is to pay attention to your body clock
D. Because of this, there isn’t even scientific agreement on how to measure focus
E. With the ever-present pull of our emails and social media, it’s easy to see why
F. However, even when we’ve done all that, there’s still the enemy within to deal with

Last week in biology class, the teacher had the students pair up to care for a plant or a small animal for a month. Alex and Sam became partners. They picked out a little hamster (仓鼠) with soft brown fur and shiny black eyes. They named it Peanut and set up a cage for it on the bookshelf next to their desks.
They took turns feeding Peanut, cleaning the cage and giving it water. Alex liked watching Peanut run on the wheel in the cage. Sam liked holding it gently. Peanut soon became the class star. Everyone passing by would stop and say hi. Some even brought vegetable pieces and Peanut would eat them greedily.
One morning, it was Alex’s turn to clean the cage. He took Peanut out and set it on a chair while he cleaned the plastic base. When he finished and looked back, Peanut was gone. Alex’s heart sank. He got down on his hands and knees and searched under the desks, his face pale with worry. At that moment, Sam rushed over, face red, blaming Alex for being careless. Alex felt awful but also angry. “Hey, remember yesterday you left the cage door unlocked? So don’t just blame me.” Sam shook his head. “I didn’t lose him today — you did!” They said no more and searched under every chair, behind the bookshelf, and inside desks. But Peanut was nowhere to be seen. Then the bell rang. They had to stop. Sam walked back to his seat, head down. Alex stood there for a second, then did the same. The empty cage sitting on the bookshelf was like a wall standing between them, right in their hearts.
After school, without a word, they both stayed behind. They searched everywhere again but found nothing. Alex was about to give up when he heard a tiny scratching (抓挠) sound. It came from the corner near the bookshelf.

C. Neutral. D. Dismissive.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. C 11. B

Improve your attention span
May I have your attention, please? I’ll try and be quick, as I probably only have about 47 seconds before your mind starts wandering (走神). That, according to psychologist Dr Gloria Mark, is now our average attention span (注意力持续时间), based on her latest study of people’s use of screens in the workplace. Of course, this figure has its limits. As other psychologists have argued your concentration can vary so much, the very idea of an “average" attention span is almost meaningless. ____16____.
Nevertheless, it’s likely your attention span is decreasing. As one recent survey suggests, nearly half the population nowadays feels as if theirs is worse than it was. ____17____.
Of course, we can silence our phone notifications (通知) and put on noise-canceling headphones. ____18____. Unknowingly, you’re “interrupting” yourself all day long, according to Mark. Even while reading this, you may have gotten the sudden desire to look something up online, check your emails or do something else. “It’s something we do without realizing,” said Mark.
F. However, even when we’ve done all that, there’s still the enemy within to deal with
G. While we don’t all have the same attention span, truly paying attention to something is universal
【答案】16. D 17. E 18. F 19. C 20. A
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了现代人注意力时长缩短的现象,分析了外部和内部的原因,并提出根据个人生物钟安排任务以提高专注力的解决方案。
【16题详解】
前文“That, according to psychologist Dr Gloria Mark, is now our average attention span (注意力持续时间), based on her latest study of people’s use of screens in the workplace. Of course, this figure has its limits. As other psychologists have argued your concentration can vary so much, the very idea of an “average" attention span is almost meaningless.
前文“Nevertheless, it’s likely your attention span is decreasing. As one recent survey suggests, nearly half the population nowadays feels as if theirs is worse than it was. (然而,很可能你的注意力持续时间正在减少。最近的一项调查显示,如今近一半的人感觉他们的注意力持续时间比以前更糟了。)”指出调查显示近半数人感觉注意力变差,因此E项“With the ever-present pull of our emails and social media, it’s easy to see why (由于电子邮件和社交媒体的持续干扰,这种现象很容易理解)”符合语境,解释注意力变差的原因,承接前文。故选E。
【18题详解】
前文“Of course, we can silence our phone notifications (通知) and put on noise-canceling headphones. (当然,我们可以将手机通知静音,戴上降噪耳机。)”提到关闭通知等外部措施,后文“Unknowingly, you’re “interrupting” yourself all day long, according to Mark. (Mark说,在不知不觉中,你一整天都在“打断”自己。)”提到自我打断的问题,此处需转折指出内部干扰仍存在,因此F项“However, even when we’ve done all that, there’s still the enemy within to deal with (然而,即使做了这些,我们仍需应对内在的敌人)”符合语境,和前文构成转折,引出后文的内部问题。故选F。
【19题详解】
后文“Lining up your most mentally taxing tasks with your natural peaks (顶峰) of focus is key to concentration, says Mark. (Mark说,把最耗费脑力的任务和你最容易集中注意力的时间排在一起是集中注意力的关键。)”建议根据生物钟安排任务,此处需提出关注生物钟的解决办法,因此C项“One solution to this is to pay attention to your body clock (一个解决方法是关注你的生物钟)”符合语境,提出生物钟方案,引出后文。故选C。
【20题详解】
前文“Her research has found that, on average, these high points occur around 10 a.m. in the morning and around 2 — 3 p.m. in the afternoon. (她的研究发现,平均而言,这些高峰出现在上午10点左右和下午2点至3点左右。)”给出平均高峰时间,后文“depending on whether you’re more of a morning person or a night person. “If a person is an early type, their peak focus would be earlier — before 10 a.m.,” explains Mark. “And if they’re a late type, their peak focus will be later.” (这取决于你是早起的人还是晚睡的人。Mark解释说:“如果一个人是早起型的人,他们的注意力会更早——在上午10点之前。如果他们是晚睡型的人,他们的注意力高峰将在晚些时候。”)”具体解释早起型人和晚睡型人的个体差异,此处需补充说明高峰的时间差异,因此A项“There are differences around these times (这些时间存在个体差异)”符合语境,承接前文,后文是对其展开说明。故选A。

It’s my great honour to share my ideas here. Nowadays, many students use electric dictionary pens for English study. As a useful tool, it helps us look up new words quickly and clear reading barriers. However, some students scan questions to get answers directly.
Every coin has two sides. It can improve our learning efficiency, yet depending too much on ready answers will reduce our independent thinking ability. In my opinion, we should use it wisely.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;

Picking Peanut up, Alex and Sam looked at each other, both with a guilty look.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】范文
Immediately, Alex rushed to the bookshelf. Bending down, he gently moved aside the piled books one by one, his heart pounding with anxiety. There, curling in the narrow space behind the shelf, was Peanut, trembling faintly, its tiny paws still holding a piece of vegetable. Alex let out a long sigh of relief and gently scooped up the little creature into his palms, rubbing his face against its soft fur. At that moment, Sam hurried over, eyes wide with astonishment, and the tense atmosphere between them instantly melted away.
Picking Peanut up, Alex and Sam looked at each other, both with a guilty look. Alex was the first to break the silence, apologizing sincerely for his carelessness. Sam, his face flushed with shame, also apologized for losing his temper and blaming Alex without thinking twice. They carefully placed Peanut back in its cage and secured the door firmly. This small accident taught them a valuable lesson: staying calm and working together. Not only did they regain their lovely little pet, but they also learned to be more responsible and forgiving. Their friendship became deeper and more precious through this experience.
