My father loved lists. Over 25 years, he recorded 539 books he read and 322 episodes of Booknotes on C-SPAN, which he watched every Sunday night. He also kept grocery lists for his mini-fridge — Pepsi, coffee, heavy cream — and daily tasks. These notes filled small notebooks, always near his reading chair. He wrote them until December 31, 2004, when cancer stopped him. After his death, I gathered the notebooks into a box. For years, I couldn’t bear to open them.
Born in 1927 in Lowell, Massachusetts, my father was the son of a leather factory worker and grandson of an Irish immigrant who cleaned horse manure from the streets. Despite his humble beginnings, he was brilliant. After a summer in the leather factory, he graduated high school at 16 and went on to Boston College. He served in World War II and later earned degrees in physics. Then he worked at MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory, moved his family from Lowell to Boston, and sent his kids to private colleges. It seemed he had left Lowell behind — but not so. Deep down, he saw himself simply as a working-class Lowell kid who had just read a lot of books.
He didn’t travel much, and didn’t feel the need. When I asked if he regretted not seeing the world, he defended himself: “I’ve sailed the Atlantic in stormy winds, climbed the Himalayas, and stared down wild animals.” Then he added, “I read.” Books were his world. From them, he learned to survive landslides, shark attacks, and even gorilla attacks. He had what he called “a rich inner life” — and it was true.
Shortly before his death, he opened a small purple notebook and began one last list. It described details from 1930s Lowell — things lost in time. Twenty years later, I found it. In his flowing handwriting, Dad reached back to Lowell — a time long gone, now captured only in memory. Lost and only in memory — that was how I was experiencing Dad now. Squinting my eyes, I saw not just the city he loved, but the quiet, extraordinary man I called Dad.
4. Why are the details of the father’s lists mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A. To imply his fear of forgetting. B. To show his love for literature and cuisine.
C. To reveal his reliance on control. D. To reflect his ordered and thoughtful life.
5. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. He stayed humble and rooted. B. He struggled with his identity.
C. His success originated from his roots. D. He felt torn about his background.
6. What does the father’s quote in Paragraph 3 mainly reveal?
A. His dream of global travel. B. His pride in inner journeys.
C. His desire for real adventure. D. His escape from physical world.
7. What is the main theme of the passage?
A. Pursuit and action. B. Loss and regret.
C. Ambition and escape. D. Memory and identity.

A new study gives all of us some extra motivation when it comes to getting outside and exercising: every day you manage to fit in an additional one-hour walk, you could be boosting your lifespan by an extra six hours. That’s the approximate benefit if you’ re currently in the 25 percent least active people in the US, according to fitness tracker data analyzed by a team led by researchers from Griffith University in Australia.
If you’ re in the top 25 percent, an extra walk isn’t as much of a boost—you’ve already received most of the health benefits from exercise— but the study also highlights and quantifies some of the key benefits of an active life.“If all individuals were as active as the top 25 percent of the population, Americans over the age of 40 could live an extra 5.3 years on average,” write the researchers in their published paper. “It can be any type of exercise to reach that top quartile (四分位数) but would roughly be the equivalent of just about three hours of walking per day.”
The team analyzed wearable activity data from the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES) in the US, which recruits 5,000 volunteers a year. To calculate how changes in activity levels can influence mortality (死亡) risk, researchers referenced the NHANES results against a life-table model (where mortality rates are tracked at specific age points) and previous research into exercise and lifespan. In this particular study, data on 824 participants were excluded because they didn’t wear the trackers for long enough.
Suggesting that exercise leads to a longer life is nothing new, but quantifying and simplifying the benefits can grab attention— whether it’s five minutes a day to reduce blood pressure or nine seconds a week to grow muscle. Now there’s a new target to aim for: an extra hour’s walk a day. If you find that too discouraging a prospect, remember that any amount of exercise makes a difference to health and well- being.
8. What does the new study find?
A. Walking can cure some diseases effectively.
B. Perhaps daily walking can extend our lifespan.
C. Increasing exercise mostly benefits active people.
D. The less active people must exercise an hour a day.
9. How much daily walking is roughly needed to reach the top 25% active group?
A. Nine seconds. B. One hour. C. Three hours. D. Five hours.
10. What is the function of Paragraph 3?
A. Giving the examples. B. Analyzing the data.
C. Predicting the effect. D. Explaining the method.
11. Why does the author mention “nine seconds a week to grow muscle” in the last paragraph?
A. To compare three different types of exercise.
B. To emphasize the flexibility in setting exercise goals.
C. To demonstrate the precision of modern exercise research.
D. To highlight the advantage of walking over strength training.
D
Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai’s eruption in January 2022 was among the most violent volcanic eruptions of modern times. New research reveals that the outbreak, located off Tonga in the South Pacific, was also a rather polite one, as the underwater volcano’s explosion came with a chemical reaction that removed some of its own methane (甲烷) emissions.
Scientists examined satellite images and found an unexpectedly high concentration of formaldehyde, a gas that temporarily forms when methane breaks down in the atmosphere. The finding, published in May in the journal Nature Communications, suggests that a methane cleanup process was taking place in the stratosphere (平流层) in the wake of the eruption. Though further research is necessary to truly understand the chemistry at play, this natural mechanism could inspire artificial global warming interventions.
The chemical process driving the cleanup is not new. Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai shot salty ocean water into the air, ultimately releasing enough water vapor into the stratosphere to fill more than 58,000 Olympic-size swimming pools. When sunlight hit this cloud, it could have caused reactions that produced chlorine (氯), and the chlorine could have broken down the methane in a process that resulted in formaldehyde.
As human-generated emissions of greenhouse gases, including methane, continue to warm the planet, the idea is that this natural cleanup process could inspire an artificial intervention to remove even more methane. But some researchers are wary of the implications.
Pete Edwards, an atmospheric chemist at the University of York in England who was not involved in the study, notes that the impact of such a strategy would be difficult to predict. The volcano’s methane-removing chemistry occurred in the stratosphere, and any intervention by humans would be in the troposphere (the layer of the Earth’s atmosphere below the stratosphere). Meanwhile, atmospheric scientist Folkert Boersma adds, “We all know what to do. It’s not shooting chlorine into the stratosphere; it’s just making sure that we reduce emissions.”
12. Why is the eruption described as “polite”?
A. It cleaned up part of its own emissions.
B. It lasted for only a short time.
C. It caused little damage to the islands.
D. It produced a huge amount of water vapour.
13. What can we learn about the methane cleanup?
A. It happens only in the troposphere.
B. It depends on water vapour from the sea.
C. It removes all the methane above the volcano.
D. It was started by human intervention.
14. What does the underlined phrase “wary of” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Cautious about. B. Favorable to. C. Uninterested in. D. Confident of.
15. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text?
A. To argue that volcanoes can slow global warming.
B. To report a natural process that may inform climate solutions.
C. To warn that methane is the most dangerous greenhouse gas.
D. To compare two methods of removing greenhouse gases.

根据第二段“Our Cambridge museum is a great place to bring primary school groups, especially those studying the Ancient Greeks or Romans. We can also support both the Classics and the Art curriculum (课程) at secondary level: students studying the ancient world will benefit from student tours, while those studying art can improve their drawing skills.(我们的剑桥博物馆是带小学小组的好地方,尤其是那些学习古希腊或罗马的学生。我们还可以支持中学阶段的古典文学和艺术课程:学习古代世界的学生将从学生旅游中受益,而学习艺术的学生可以提高他们的绘画技能)”可知,博物馆明确提到其教育服务是为不同年龄段的学生量身定制的,帮助他们学习古代希腊或罗马文化、古典学和艺术等内容。由此推知,博物馆的主要目的是支持学校的课程学习,而不是单纯地促进旅行本身。故选C。
【2题详解】
细节理解题。根据Planning Your Visit部分的第二段中的“To book an in-person or virtual visit, please use our online booking request form. (如需亲自或虚拟参观,请使用我们的在线预订申请表)”和“Please note: we ask that all school trips are booked at least seven days in advance. (请注意:我们要求所有学校旅行至少提前七天预订)”可知,学校参观博物馆前必须提前一周填写预订申请表。故选B。

【导语】本文是一篇夹叙夹议文。文章通过作者回忆父亲生前记录的各类清单,展现父亲对生活的认真态度,同时借父亲虽离开故乡却始终心怀故土,以及父亲对阅读和内心世界的热爱,探讨了记忆与身份认同的主题。
【4题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中“My father loved lists.
根据第二段中“Despite his humble beginnings, he was brilliant. After a summer in the leather factory, he graduated high school at 16 and went on to Boston College. He served in World War II and later earned degrees in physics. Then he worked at MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory, moved his family from Lowell to Boston, and sent his kids to private colleges. (尽管他出身卑微,但他很聪明。在皮革厂度过一个夏天后,他16岁高中毕业,随后进入波士顿学院。他参加了第二次世界大战,后来获得了物理学学位。然后,他在麻省理工学院的林肯实验室工作,把家从洛厄尔搬到了波士顿,并送孩子上私立大学)”和“Deep down, he saw himself simply as a working-class Lowell kid who had just read a lot of books. (在他的内心深处,他只是把自己看作是一个读了很多书的洛厄尔工人阶级的孩子)”可知,父亲虽然取得了成功,但他内心深处仍然认为自己是一个来自洛厄尔的工人阶级的孩子。由此可推知,尽管父亲取得了世俗意义上的成功,但他内心依然保持谦逊,并深深认同自己的出身根源。故划线句子的意思是“他仍然保持谦逊并深深认同自己的出身”。故选A项。
根据第三段中“When I asked if he regretted not seeing the world, he defended himself: “I’ve sailed the Atlantic in stormy winds, climbed the Himalayas, and stared down wild animals.” Then he added, “I read.” Books were his world. From them, he learned to survive landslides, shark attacks, and even gorilla attacks. He had what he called “a rich inner life” — and it was true.
通读全文,尤其是最后一段中“In his flowing handwriting, Dad reached back to Lowell — a time long gone, now captured only in memory. Lost and only in memory — that was how I was experiencing Dad now. (父亲用他流畅的笔迹,回到了洛厄尔——那段早已逝去的时光,如今只能在记忆中捕捉。失去,只在记忆中——这就是我现在对父亲的感受)”可知,文章通过作者回忆父亲生前记录的各类清单,展现父亲对生活的认真态度,同时借父亲虽离开故乡却始终心怀故土,以及父亲对阅读和内心世界的热爱,探讨了记忆与身份认同的主题。故选D项。
C
B 9. C 10. D 11. B

根据文章第一段的关键信息“every day you manage to fit in an additional one-hour walk, you could be boosting your lifespan by an extra six hours (如果你每天能额外挤出一小时散步,你可能会让自己的寿命延长六个小时)”可知,新研究发现每天散步可能有助于延长寿命。
根据文章第二段中“‘It can be any type of exercise to reach that top quartile (四分位数) but would roughly be the equivalent of just about three hours of walking per day.’(要达到最活跃的四分之一人群的水平,可以是任何类型的锻炼,但大致相当于每天散步三小时。)”
根据文章第三段中“The team analyzed wearable activity data from the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES) in the US, which recruits 5,000 volunteers a year. To calculate how changes in activity levels can influence mortality (死亡) risk, researchers referenced the NHANES results against a life-table model (where mortality rates are tracked at specific age points) and previous research into exercise and lifespan.(该研究团队分析了来自美国国家健康和营养调查(NHANES)的可穿戴设备活动数据,该调查每年招募5000名志愿者。为了计算活动水平的变化如何影响死亡风险,研究人员将NHANES的结果与生命表模型(在特定年龄点追踪死亡率)以及之前关于运动和寿命的研究进行了对照。)”可知,第三段详细解释了研究团队是如何进行研究的,包括数据来源、研究方法和参考的模型等。因此,第三段的作用是解释研究方法。故选D。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段的关键信息“Suggesting that exercise leads to a longer life is nothing new, but quantifying and simplifying the benefits can grab attention— whether it’s five minutes a day to reduce blood pressure or nine seconds a week to grow muscle. Now there’s a new target to aim for: an extra hour’s walk a day. If you find that too discouraging a prospect, remember that any amount of exercise makes a difference to health and well-being.”(虽然运动能延长寿命的说法并不新鲜,但量化和简化这些益处能引起人们的注意——无论是每天五分钟降血压,还是每周九秒增肌。 B“To emphasize the flexibility in setting exercise goals.(为了强调设定锻炼目标的灵活性)”符合题意。故选B。
A 13. B 14. A 15. B

根据第一段中“New research reveals that the outbreak, located off Tonga in the South Pacific, was also a rather polite one, as the underwater volcano’s explosion came with a chemical reaction that removed some of its own methane (甲烷) emissions.(新的研究表明,位于南太平洋汤加附近的这次爆发也是一次相当礼貌的爆发,因为水下火山的爆发伴随着一种化学反应,这种反应消除了其自身的一些甲烷排放)”可知,这次喷发被称为“polite”是因为它清除了自身的一部分排放物。
根据第三段中“Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai shot salty ocean water into the air, ultimately releasing enough water vapor into the stratosphere to fill more than 58,000 Olympic-size swimming pools. When sunlight hit this cloud, it could have caused reactions that produced chlorine (氯), and the chlorine could have broken down the methane in a process that resulted in formaldehyde.(洪阿汤加火山将含盐的海水喷入空中,最终向平流层释放了足以填满超过58000个奥运会标准泳池的水蒸气。当阳光照射这片云时,可能引发反应产生氯,而氯能够分解甲烷,这一过程生成了甲醛)”可知,甲烷清除过程依赖于来自海洋的水蒸气。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段的“As human-generated emissions of greenhouse gases, including methane, continue to warm the planet, the idea is that this natural cleanup process could inspire an artificial intervention to remove even more methane. But some researchers are wary of the implications.(随着包括甲烷在内的人为温室气体排放持续使地球变暖,这一想法是这种自然清理过程可能启发人工干预以清除更多甲烷。但一些研究人员对这种做法的影响是wary of)”并结合第五段“Pete Edwards, an atmospheric chemist at the University of York in England who was not involved in the study, notes that the impact of such a strategy would be difficult to predict. It’s not shooting chlorine into the stratosphere; it’s just making sure that we reduce emissions.”(英国约克大学的大气化学家皮特·爱德华兹(未参与该研究)指出,这种策略的影响将难以预测。
根据第二段的“The finding, published in May in the journal Nature Communications, suggests that a methane cleanup process was taking place in the stratosphere (平流层) in the wake of the eruption. Though further research is necessary to truly understand the chemistry at play, this natural mechanism could inspire artificial global warming interventions.(这一发现发表于5月的《自然·通讯》期刊,表明在火山喷发后,平流层中正在发生一个甲烷清除过程。尽管要真正理解其中起作用的化学机制还需进一步研究,但这种自然机制可能启发人工干预全球变暖)”及全文内容可知,作者写本文的目的是报道一种可能为气候问题解决方案提供启示的自然过程。

Growth in My Eyes
Opinions on growth vary. Some argue that fitting in lays the foundation for growth, while others insist that staying true to oneself matters more. I stand by the latter view.
Last term, faced with classmates’ advice to choose an easy topic for the English speech contest, I stuck to wildlife protection, which I was passionate about. Despite repeated doubts, I kept practicing diligently and won first prize. Looking back, I not only gained public speaking skills but tasted the true meaning of growth.
Ultimately, only by holding on to our inner beliefs can we achieve real progress and go further in life.
