In the new town square near the Pinglu Canal (运河) in Lingshan County, there stands a tall camphor tree (樟树) with a history of nearly 220 years. Every evening, local villagers sit under its green leaves to chat and enjoy the cool wind.
“The old tree is like our family member. It has grown up with us,” said a villager named Ling Changhe. When workers built the Pinglu Canal, people once faced a difficult choice. At first, the project team planned to move the old tree to a city park. However, villagers didn’t want it to be moved away.
After listening to people’s voices, the team worked with the local government to think of a better plan. Finally, they decided to transplant the old tree to the new town square, so it could stay with the villagers.
As an old saying goes, trees may easily die after being moved. Old trees are just like elderly people. Moving them may greatly affect their growth. Before the transplanting, workers carefully treated the tree’s roots and watched its condition for months. They did not move it until new roots and fresh buds (芽) grew out.
On the moving day, workers used 2 large machines to lift the tree. It was 12.3 metres tall and weighed over 50 tons. They kept working from early morning till daybreak the next day.
Special experts gave guidance all the time. They made strict rules to protect old trees and the local environment. So far, 36 old trees have been successfully transplanted. Agarwood (沉香) is a valuable gift from nature which is called “the diamond (钻石) in wood”. It plays an important role in Chinese traditional culture. It has a pleasant smell. In ancient times, people used it for religious (宗教的) activities. With it, they also created a peaceful environment and made nice hand-made objects.
In the past, agarwood was hard to get. Wild agarwood trees produced resin (树脂) only when they were hurt. The resin slowly mixed with wood and formed agarwood. For hundreds of years, it was mostly used by temples (寺庙), rich people and collectors. Common people could not enjoy this special treasure.
Now, great changes have taken place. Dr. Dai Hao and his team have studied agarwood for over 20 years. They have developed new technology to help trees produce agarwood in man-made ways. Now people can grow agarwood trees and get agarwood more easily.
Today, many farmers in Hainan plant agarwood trees. Some villagers even turned their yards into agarwood bases. More than just selling wood from trees, the local agarwood industry has two parts. One is making new products from agarwood. It brings farmers more money than ordinary farm plants and helps villagers live a better life. The other is welcoming visitors. Visitors can learn about agarwood skills and children can try these hand-made activities.
With the help of modern science, the growing of agarwood trees becomes a popular industry. It carries our traditional culture and brings beauty and benefits to common families. It shows us that traditional Chinese culture is still alive.

A. girl picked a small seed on the way home. It looked dry and pale. Most of her friends said it was dead and nothing would grow from it. But she still put it into a pot with soil and watered it carefully every few days. Weeks passed. Nothing came out of the soil. She almost wanted to throw the pot away. A farmer had two boxes of apples. The apples in one box shone bright red with smooth skin, looking perfect at first sight, while the apples in the other were covered with small dark marks on their surface. Most buyers believed fruit with a beautiful look would surely taste better, so they reached for the shiny red apples right away. Yet when they took a bite, the pretty apples turned out sour. Those marked apples, however, tasted sweet and juicy. The dark marks were left by strong sunlight, and it was the sunshine that helped the apples build up more sugar inside.
