Shanya Gill,a middle schooler from San Jose,California, won the top award in the Thermo Fisher
Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge(TFS JIC)for designing a fire detection system that is superior to
existing ones,as stated in the press release.
Shanya's inspiration came after a fire destroyed a restaurant in her neighborhood during the
summer of 2022,reported The Washington Post."I had never really experienced something like that
第4页共12页
before,"she told The Washington Post about the early moming fire at Holder's Country Inn,which
started in the kitchen. They had smoke detectors, and yet it still burned down,"she added.
After she studied fire statistics,Shanya spent over a year developing a fire detection system that
she believes could have prevented the fire.Unlike traditional smoke detectors that sense active fires
from the smoke in the air,Shanya's thermal imaging device is designed to stop fires from occurring.
With a thermal camera and a Raspberry Pi,a tiny computer, the device detects when a heat source
has been left unattended for ten minutes and sends a text message warning.Creating the prototype was
difficult and the hardest part was the programming."I had two designs, and my first design completely
failed,"she said. The final device outperforms smoke detectors in speed and accuracy.Shanya wants to
bring the costs down to make it even more common than hardwired smoke detectors.
"Shanya saw a problem, went after it and tried to solve it,and that's what we need to encourage in
all young people,"said Maya Ajmera, president and CEO of Society for Science. She also highlighted
the significance of supporting individuals, especially girls and kids of color,in STEM(science,
technology, engineering and maths)fields,as research indicates that many young people drop out of
these areas.
24.What motivated Shanya to develop her fire detection system?
A.Her experience of a destructive fire
B.Her desire to win the science award.
C.Her interest in computer programming.
D.Her goal to improve STEM education for girls.
25.What is an advantage of Shanya's invention?
A.It consists of two parts that are easier to conduct.
B.It can send out a warning against a potential fire.
C.It can detect active fires from the smoke in the air.
D.It functions when a fire breaks out within 10 minutes.
26.Which of the following can best describe Shanya's inventing work?
A.Thrilling.
B.Rough
C.Supported.
D.Smooth.
27.What's the best title for this article?
A.Shanya Gill inspires the discriminated
B.Middle schooler stands out in TFSJIC
C.TFSJIC ends with glory and promise

A new Antarctic lab carved into an icy cave that functions like a bank vault for glacier landscapes
that might soon disappear has opened at Concordia Station, run by French and Italian researchers.
Named the Ice Memory Sanctuary,it will hold ice cores drilled from melting glaciers around the world,
joined by more cores from other places. To recover the record of past climates contained within a glacier
or ice sheet, scientists drill holes through layers of ice to the bedrock, dislodging cylinders that range
from 300 to 500 feet long. Then, they are shipped to Antarctica.
Glaciers function like climate archives, trapping the gases, aerosols, and pollutants from ancient
atmospheres between layers ofice.Because glacier melt can't be stopped without dramatic action taken
to stop climate change, the Ice Memory Sanctuary is a last resort for scientists hoping to preserve this
knowledge.
"Fifty or 100 years from now, scientists will have analytical capabilities we cannot even imagine
today,"says Thomas Stocker,IMF chair and professor emeritus of climate and environmental physics
at the University of Bern,Switzerland.
Stocker thinks scientists could one day learn unprecedented insights into how air moves around the
planet and how water moves among the oceans, atmosphere, and land.On a hotter planet, these cycles
can dramatically change.Precise measurements of the chemical signals in ice could help scientists
understand how Earth's climate systems work and could test their climate models,he explains.
28.What do we know about the Ice Memory Sanctuary?
A.It is a station based in European Alps.
B.It is a bank vault in the shape of a cave.
C.It is a cave cold enough to preserve samples
D.It is a lab founded by Anne-Catherine Ohlmann.
29.What does the underlined word"dislodging"in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Preserving.
B.Polishing.
C.Removing.
D.Stuffing.
30.Why is the Ice Memory Sanctuary crucial for scientists?
A.Because it provides irreplaceable climate clues.
B.Because it warns humans to protect the Earth.
C.Because it purifies the chemicals and pollutants.
D.Because it slows down the melting speed of glaciers.
高三英语试题第6页共12页
31.Which of the following does Thomas Stocker most probably agree with?
A.Scientists'capabilities are severely underestimated.
B.Air and water movement is the hardest to understand.
C.Future climate research will center around chemicals.
D.A long-term perspective is quite necessary in science

From live speech translation in video calls to auto-dubbing on TikTok,real-time translation
powered by artificial intelligence(Al)is now embedded in everyday life. All this raises a vital question.
If machines can do this faster and more accurately than humans,is investing years in learning another
language still worth it?
Our recent study examined cognitive performance in 94 adults aged 18 to 83,using both
visuospatial and auditory tasks across working memory, attention and inhibition.Put simply,we looked
at how people process and respond to information they see or mentally map out in space(visuospatial)
and information they hear(auditory).Examples include remembering sounds, focusing on visual
patterns,or ignoring distractions.
Our study measured multilingualism as a spectrum, not a category. This allowed us to capture
diverse language backgrounds and experiences.Multilingual participants spoke a range of languages
with varying levels of proficiency and daily use, reflecting the linguistic diversity common within
multicultural communities.
Across most tasks, multilinguals and monolinguals performed similarly. However, one pattern was
striking.Individuals with richer, more diverse multilingual experience showed markedly better
performance in visuospatial working memory. These effects were most pronounced in older people.
This suggests that multilingual experience doesn't broadly enhance cognition, like some headlines
claim.Instead,it may help preserve specific functions over time.Separate population-level research
has also linked multilingualism to later onset of Alzheimer's disease and better overall ageing outcomes,
though the mechanisms continue to be debated.
Overall, however,it appears that sustained use of multiple languages represents a form of mental
activity with effects that accumulate across a lifetime.
AI translation excels at speed and accessibility. For many practical purposes,it works remarkably
well.AI will continue to change how we engage with language learning. It can personalize instruction,
minimize bariers and provide feedback at scale. But it can't replace the cognitive work that comes
高三英语试题第7页共12页
from learning a language. This work builds and preserves the mental sharpness that sustains us across
a lifetime. And this difference still matters.
32.Why does the author mention "live speech translation"and"auto-dubbing"in paragraph 1?
A.To choose one as the topic.
B.To invite further reflection.
C.To recommend translation apps.
D.To praise technological advances
33.What do we know about the recent study?
A.It adopts a conventional method
B.Its participants cover different age groups
C.Its process is very time-consuming.
D.Its results match most previous claims.
34.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A.AI translation excels in a wide range of aspects.
B.AI will not shake the value of language learning.
C.AI era greatly changes how people use a language.
D.AI has a long way to go before doing cognitive work.
35.Where is the article most probably taken from?
A.A science magazine.
B.Alocal news update.
C.A technological brochure.
D.An English-learning guide.

Perfectionism is not necessarily about being "perfect"or about doing something perfectly.Even
researchers in the field may not agree on the "perfect"definition of perfectionism. However, research
often centers round the following definition:36 It involves basing one's self-worth almost
entirely on how well these high standards are pursued and achieved.
Often perfectionists may not recognize that perfectionism is indeed at the root of their problems.
Perfectionists often present with anxiety, depression, procrastination, social anxiety, and eating
difficulties.37 Moreover, note that there is a difference between a healthy pursuit of
excellence and unhelpful perfectionism.Setting goals and having high standards help us achieve things
in life. However, when goals and tasks are only achievable at great cost, perfectionism becomes a
高三英语试题第8页共12页
problem.
38 A thought diary can help you become aware of negative thoughts and how they make
you feel and behave. It enables you to investigate how useful these thoughts are and regain balance.
Secondly, reflect on whether you put unreasonable expectations on yourself.A good question to ask
yourself is,what would you say to a friend with these expectations?39 Finally, try to think
about the amount of importance you place on different areas of your life that contribute to your self-
worth. Not just academic or work achievements but things like hobbies and being a good friend.
Changing perfectionism is not easy,as one has to weigh the advantages and disadvantages.A
person who has unhelpful perfectionism has to first realize that it is a problem.40 Workshops,
counselling and CBT(Cognitive Behavioral Therapy)can also help a person begin to address the
underlying beliefs and thinking styles that maintain perfectionism.
A.Perfectionism features doing things perfectly.
B.It can be helpful to gain a different perspective.
C.Strict perfectionist attitudes actually affect the chances of success.
D.To help get rid of perfectionism, experts offer various useful tips.
E.Behaviors associated with perfectionism are over-checking,repeated revision and so on.
F.Self-help books and websites can help identify which areas of perfectionism apply to them.
G.Perfectionism is going to extreme lengths to meet self-set,very demanding standards despite
negative consequences.

A Suggestion for a Better School Life
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
This time,Mira wasn't asking the AI to polish her essays.Instead, she typed a question that had
been pressing on her heart for weeks:"Why won't Grandma eat properly?"
It was early January. After finishing her exams,Mira had returned to her hometown to spend some
quiet days with her grandmother. The old woman had once been a legend-she'd worked as a tailor,
高三英语试题第11页共12页
made dresses for half the village and saved enough to open her own shop.
Time had taken its toll. Now her eyesight had dimmed, her fingers trembled, but she was still that
legendary woman who lived on her own terms.Whenever someone ladled(用勺子舀)soup into her
bowl, she would push it away, murmuring,"I don't need it.Save it for yourselves."Every meal played
out the same way.It broke Mira's heart.
Actually, the family was doing well. There was plenty of food, plenty oflove. So why did eating-
a simple,everyday act-seem like a burden to her?
She tried reasoning with her,but the more she talked, the more Grandma resisted.Until one day,in
a moment of frustration, she blurted out,"Grandma, you make me so sad when you act like this."The
old woman froze,then sighed."I'm over seventy.I won't be around much longer.It doesn't matter how
I eat."
The words cut deep.Mira thought about taking her to a psychologist but knew she'd refuse. So she
turned to an old companion, the AI.
The response came quickly.Grandma was refusing food because she felt like she no longer had a
place in the family. The AI offered suggestions:Help her feel secure and needed.

A Suggestion for a Better School Life
To improve our school life, I’d like to put forward two practical suggestions.
For one thing, the school ought to set aside regular free‑reading periods. Through reading current‑affairs articles, we can broaden our horizons and keep up with the times amid heavy schoolwork. For another, the canteen should offer more healthy fast‑food choices. Given our tight schedule, quick‑serve food can guarantee high dining efficiency while keeping us nourished.
I sincerely hope my ideas will be taken into account.(词数:84)

Possible version one:
With Al’s assistance, Mira began her plan. First, she worked with AI to create customized recipes for Grandma, accounting for her age-related digestive issues and past preferences to make nutritious, easy-to-swallow dishes. Meanwhile, following AI’s suggestion to make Grandma feel valued, the family started to shower her with more attention—sitting with her at meals, chatting warmly, expressing appreciation and encouraging her to eat. As days passed, Grandma began to sense the genuine care and importance the family placed on her. Gradually, the once-stubborn resistance to food faded away.
As meals became less of a battle, Mira decided to relight the sparkle in grandmother’s eyes. “It’s time to make her feel needed,” Mira thought, appealing to Grandma's pride as the village’s best tailor and asking her to make a special outfit for a school event. Grandma’s eyes lit up immediately, a spark of the old force she once had returning. Mira and Grandma spent hours crafting together Grandma patiently guiding her through measuring. cutting, and sewing, sharing stories of her tailor days. This interaction restored Grandma's self - worth, strengthened their bond, and gave her a new lease on life. Her appetite improved with renewed energy from skill recognition, leaving Mira amazed at AI's role as an outstanding virtual psychologist.
Possible version two:
With Al’s assistance, Mira began her plan. Together with her mother, she initiated small, intentional changes: transforming the daily menu into elaborately colorful, inviting meals according to Al-generated recipes tailored for the elderly. When dinner time arrived, instead of helping Grandma as usual, Mira began inviting Grandma to help her in little ways - whether it was stirring the pot or placing a plate. The old lady, surprised initially, gracefully responded to Mira's invitation, with a hint of contented smile crossing her face. Days passing by, the tension that had once hung over Mira's family's dinner table was nowhere to be found. And in its place came natural interactions between Grandma and others. To everyone's relief, Grandma's appetite for food began to return.
As meals became less of a battle, Mira decided to relight the sparkle in grandmother’s eyes. After a conversation with Al, Mira decided to make a new apron with her grandma. To her delight, just a quick explanation of her idea was enough to light up her grandma’s eyes with excitement. Without hesitation, the two dove into measuring and cutting fabric. Despite Grandma's diminished eyesight and unstable hands, their collaboration flowed effortlessly. Two hours later, Mira was in her freshly crafted apron. “Not bad. But I could have made a better one twenty years ago,” commented the lady in a playful tone. “Sure, our best tailor ever!” Mira responded, laughing together with her grannie, a deep sense of gratitude rising in her heart - for her reliable companion, the Al that effectively helped her reignite her grandma's hope and passion for life.
