Air pollution is well-known to be harmful to our lungs. New research shows it may also raise children’s risk of developing nearsightedness (近视).
The study collected information from nearly 30,000 school-age children in Tianjin. Scientists found that children living in areas with less air pollution had better eyesight. Many factors can lead to nearsightedness, such as screen time, outdoor activities and eating habits. This research specially studied the influence of air quality. The research team used AI technology to analyze data. It found two air pollutants, nitrogen dioxide gas (二氧化氮) and ultra-fine airborne particles (超细悬浮颗粒物), were closely related to children’s eye health. Lower levels of these two pollutants meant better eyesight for children.
Polluted air can hurt children’s eyes in several ways. Tiny particles floating in the air can easily get into our eyes and cause inflammation (炎症). Besides, pollutants we breathe in can enter our blood and travel to all parts of our body, including our eyes. These pollutants can also cause eye problems. Doctors usually encourage children to spend time outside to protect eyesight. However, if the outdoor air is heavily polluted, staying outdoors may become a risk for children’s eyes.
Based on the findings, researchers put forward simple ways to protect children’s eyes. They advise building clean-air zones around schools and putting air purifiers (净化器) in classrooms. If we cut down air pollution, more children will have a better chance to keep good eyesight.
24. What were closely related to children’s eye health according to this research?
A. Eating habits. B. Outdoor activities. C. Two air pollutants.
25. How many ways to hurt children’s eyes are mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four.
26. What can we know from the passage?
A. Staying outdoors is always good for children’s eyes.
B. Researchers advise putting air purifiers around schools.
C. Lower level of nitrogen dioxide gas means better eyesight for children.
27. In which part of a magazine can we probably read the passage?
A. Science study. B. School life. C. Travel guide.

①China is famous for having the best high-speed train network (高速铁路网) in the world. A new train called CR450 breaks speed records!
②CR450 can go very fast, with an average speed of 400 km/h and a top speed of 453 km/h. Before this, the fastest high-speed train in the world is China’s CR400, which runs at 350 km/h on average.
③“The key is not to make the train run fast but to have it stop steadily (平稳地),” Zhao Hongwei from the China Academy of Railway Sciences told CCTV News. It travels a lot faster, but the standard is that CR450 should have the same brake (刹车) distance as CR400, which is 6,500 meters. It can also start braking more quickly, taking just 1. 7 seconds compared to the 2.3 seconds needed for CR400.
④Engineers tested the brakes a lot to make sure they work well. In the tests, the brake disc (制动盘) got really hot, reaching temperatures of up to 700°C. Its colour changed from black to red. Then they recorded the changes.
⑤Besides having a faster speed and better braking system, CR450 is also lighter and uses less energy than CR400, according to CCTV News. This means that CR450 uses less fuel (燃料) or power to run, which is good for the environment. And a lighter train also needs less energy to move, so it can travel farther.
⑥With all these benefits, people are very excited to see this new train and experience its speed. China’s high-speed train network is really wonderful, and CR450 is just another example of its success!
28. What is the average speed of CR450?
A. 350km / h. B. 400km / h. C. 430km / h.
29. What is the key according to Zhao Hongwei?
A. To make the train run fast.
B. To have the train stop steadily.
C. To make the train start braking quickly.
30. What can we know about CR450 compared with CR400?
A. It needs more power to run.
B. It has a shorter brake distance.
C. It is better for the environment.
31. Which is the structure of the passage?
A. B. C.

Remembering vocabulary plays an important part in learning English. Without enough words, we can hardly understand texts or express ourselves. 32
Read and listen
Learning new words through reading or listening is better than just memorizing words. Find what you are most interested in and read news from BBC or VOA. If you have time, try to read short English novels. You can pick up new words naturally in interesting materials.
Use dictionaries
As you all know, a dictionary is necessary when learning new words. However, you may wonder what kind of dictionary is best for you. 33 One dictionary gives definitions (定义) and examples of a word in English and the other gives meanings in Chinese. Good dictionaries help you understand words in real situations.
Use mind maps
34 For example, you can put adjectives describing a person’s personality into one kind. It helps you make connections between these words. As a result, you can remember them more easily.
Use new words
Try to use new words in conversation with a partner. If you can’t find a partner, just choose a topic and talk to yourself. 35 Using words actively helps turn short-term memory into long-term memory.
Vocabulary learning is a long-term journey. Keep practicing these skills every day, and little by little you will build a larger vocabulary.
A. A good dictionary is very important.
B. It also helps when you use them in writing.
C. You can try to use two kinds of dictionaries.
D. Here are some ways to increase your vocabulary.
