Period Five Writing ●Ⅰ 阅读理解(每小题2.5分,满分10分) [2026·广东揭阳联考高二期中考试] Since Glacier (冰川) National Park’s creation, it has represented the spiritual treasure of Americans with its breathtaking landscapes. But today, climate warming threatens the very emblem of the park, leaving it facing a future in which its name could be cruel ironies Deep within Glacier National Park, visitors are now met with an amazing sight: a peaceful lake of pale blue water lying among towering peaks. Beautiful as it is, the very presence of this lake is not desired by people. Just a few decades ago, this landscape was entirely frozen. Now the glacier itself is reduced to taking up a small area, sheltered from the Sun at the edge of the lake created through its own melting (融化). The park has already lost 60 percent of its namesake glaciers since the 1850s, and scientists predict their complete disappearance by the century’s end. Families from all over the US and abroad flood to these natural wonders to create memories that will last. Conserving the national park is one of the rare issues that bring political opponents together in the US. With tens of millions of visitors to these sites every year, it is also an economic necessity. The US government recently announced considerable funds to help. This has issued a challenge to the identity of the National Park Service, a US agency brought into existence by a 1916 law that called for the preservation of those treasured sites for the enjoyment of future generations. “But it’s now pretty clear that it’s not achievable in many places,” admits John Gross, an ecologist with the National Park Service climate change response programme.“It’s certainly possible that the park could lose the iconic feature for which it has been named.” The climate crisis has thus brought about a shift in the organization’s philosophy: it’s acceptable to change a park’s natural state to stop its further worsening. ( )1.What does the underlined word “emblem” in Paragraph 1 mean? A.Symbol. B.Location. C.Recovery. D.Construction. ( )2.Why is the new lake in the park mentioned? A.To highlight the economic value of the park. B.To serve as evidence of the warming climate. C.To explain the process of glacier formation. D.To describe a new popular tourist attraction. ( )3.What can be learned about the National Park Service? A.It mainly allows for economic benefits. B.It shows confidence in restoring the park. C.It is forced to adjust its protection principle. D.It is taking measures to limit visitor numbers. ( )4.Which can be the best title for the text? A.A new idea for park conservation B.A park is economically on thin ice C.A political agreement on renaming a park D.A park might be at risk of redefining itself ●Ⅱ 阅读七选五(每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) When I was standing on a hill at Cliveden Gardens on a sunny winter day, its dark-green lake surrounded by centuries-old trees took my breath away. 1. It’s just a local park near London that I’d never heard of during my eight years of living in the UK. As I admired the peaceful garden, it taught me a lesson about the British culture of understatement (低调).  “The English landscape is more beautiful because its beauty is understated,” my friend Will said to me later as we walked through an exhibition at Tate Britain. He pointed to a painting of a peaceful countryside. “This is the landscape I grew up with,” he said. Unlike grand waterfalls or wild forests, this scenery doesn’t shout about its beauty. 2.       I wonder if Chinese tourists will explore beyond London. 3. Indeed, Oxford and Cambridge and the beloved Lake District National Park are some iconic symbols of Britain. But it would be a pity if they miss out on the lesser-known parts of the English landscape.  4. I remember a straight-A classmate once telling me he “survived exams” and another friend from Oxford introducing himself as “studying in the countryside”. This modesty also has its mirror in Chinese culture. I remember my parents telling me to work hard but not to exaggerate my achievements. Chinese culture is full of proverbs such as “real gold will shine sooner or later”, to encourage long-term devotion to one’s chosen area of expertise.  Experiencing both cultures, I’ve realized that the English and Chinese both express achievements with understatement. 5. It reflects the unspoken charm in both British and Chinese traditions. And it’s an off-the-beaten-path attraction well worth exploration.  A.I’ve been impressed by British humour all the time. B.They tend to prefer places with a strong reputation. C.But the more I looked, the more I saw its quiet elegance. D.Cliveden isn’t a famous holiday place where visitors flock. E.Rather, its beauty is reserved for the local community only. F.This mix makes me appreciate the unusual beauty of Cliveden. G.Over the years, I’ve been familiarizing myself with British modesty. Recently, my work has been incredibly overwhelming—the constant deadlines, endless meetings, and high expectations are really wearing me down, making me lost in life. It’s hard to quiet my mind to focus on anything else. I knew I needed to find a way to manage these emotions before things got worse. I decided to go hiking in a forest near my city to escape from all those that stressed me. I packed my backpack carefully, making sure I had everything I needed—water, some snacks, and sunscreen to protect my skin from the sun. With everything prepared, I set off, ready for a little adventure. The forest was more beautiful than I had imagined. Tall, ancient trees stretched high above me, their leaves forming a green roof that let in patches of sunlight. Colourful wildflowers dotted the ground, and the air smelled fresh and earthy. Birds sang sweetly from the branches, and the sound of rustling leaves made the forest feel alive. The peacefulness of nature calmed me down. I followed a narrow, winding path with fewer hikers, enjoying every moment. The deeper I went, the more magical everything seemed. I was so busy looking at the trees and listening to the birds that I didn’t pay attention to where I was going. Suddenly, I stopped. The trees around me looked strange—different from the ones I had passed earlier. My heart skipped a beat. Obviously, I was lost in nature, just like I was in my life. The sun was beginning to set, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink. I knew I had to find my way back before it got dark. I tried to remember which direction I had come from, but the forest was like a giant maze (迷宫). Every path I took seemed to lead me in circles. The trees all looked the same. Paragraph 1: As it was becoming dark, I realized how serious my situation was.                   Paragraph 2: Just as I was feeling hopeless, I spotted a faint (微弱的) light in the distance. 根据第一段中“…it has represented the spiritual treasure of Americans with its breathtaking landscapes.” 故选 A 项。 根据第二段中的“Just a few decades ago, this landscape was entirely frozen. Now the glacier itself is reduced to taking up a small area, sheltered from the Sun at the edge of the lake created through its own melting 根据最后一段中“The climate crisis has thus brought about a shift in the organization’s philosophy: it’s acceptable to change a park’s natural state to stop its further worsening.” 1.D 根据上文“When I was standing on a hill at Cliveden Gardens on a sunny winter day, its dark-green lake surrounded by centuries-old trees took my breath away.”和下文“It’s just a local park near London that I’d never heard of during my eight years of living in the UK.” 2.C 根据上文“He pointed to a painting of a peaceful countryside. ‘This is the landscape I grew up with,’ he said. Unlike grand waterfalls or wild forests, this scenery doesn’t shout about its beauty.” 3.B 根据上文“I wonder if Chinese tourists will explore beyond London.”以及后文“Indeed, Oxford and Cambridge and the beloved Lake District National Park are some iconic symbols of Britain. But it would be a pity if they miss out on the lesser-known parts of the English landscape.” 4.G 根据下文“I remember a straight-A classmate once telling me he ‘survived exams’ and another friend from Oxford introducing himself as ‘studying in the countryside’. This modesty also has its mirror in Chinese culture.” 5.F 根据上文“Experiencing both cultures, I’ve realized that the English and Chinese both express achievements with understatement.”以及下文“It reflects the unspoken charm in both British and Chinese traditions. And it’s an off-the-beaten-path attraction well worth exploration.” Ⅲ. One possible version: Dear Peter, Knowing that you’re interested in traditional Chinese culture, I’m writing to recommend you to go to Chinese Tea Culture Theme Park located in the suburban area of Beijing. Walking in the park, you will be impressed with different “tea” characters written by many famous scholars. The history of tea growing in China and the special ways of cooking different tea, such as Longjing tea, and Pu’er tea are also shown on the cultural wall in the park. It is said that tea growing in China has a history of up to 5,000 years. Equally attractive are the unique teahouses in the park, where visitors can taste various tea. I sincerely invite you to come here and I am convinced that the tea culture will surely appeal to you. One possible version: As it was becoming dark, I realized how serious my situation was. The forest, once a place of beauty, now felt like a prison. Shadows grew large, and every sound made me jump. I tried to retrace my steps, but everything looked the same. Panic welled up as I thought about the long, cold night ahead. What if there were wild animals? My hands shook as I felt around in my backpack, looking for anything that could help. Desperation filled me as the light faded. Just as I was feeling hopeless, I spotted a faint(微弱的) light in the distance. A glimmer of hope surged through me. I stumbled towards it, branches catching at my clothes. To my relief, it was a group of fellow hikers who had set up camp for the night. After listening to my difficult situation, they shared their food and offered me a place to sleep. Their kindness not only saved me from a dangerous night but also made me realize that help is often closer than we think, both in the forest and in life’s challenges.
